I have loved the song Ue O Muite Arukō since I was a child. I am 74 now, and consider it part of my past. Rest well Kyo Sakamoto, your smile, your happiness and your music live on in the hearts of so many people
This song is so beautiful and you will recognize it right away after the first tones👌👌👍😉🙂🙃 Even though the song is 63yrs old now it is still beautiful👌👍👍🇳🇱
I taught Japanese language at a high school in Hawaii for a semester while the real teacher went on a sabbatical. I established a ritual of starting each class by singing this song together. In the beginning, there was a little trepidation and resistance as the students searched for relevance. The students quickly took a liking to this tune for its melody and uplifting message. Once when I pressed to forego the ritual to jump start a busy class agenda, the students demanded, "sensei, we must sing the song together first". Hope those students will forever remember this beautiful song.
I am 69. This song was huge in America when it was first released and I was young. I still cry when I hear it. Both because of the songs power, and knowing he died at Tenerife
Thank you for the nice story. I love this song as I remember my young days in Mexico. Why many people like this song? because this includes various emotion such as loneliness, suffer, disappointment, breakup, feeling of helplessness and etc.
As a Jamaican who tries to put off learning Japanese, I have a renewed sense of desire to learn after watching this reggae infused version of this song renamed "Sukiyaki" for us "lazy" English speakers
I’m an expatriate. The news reports broke my heart. The people welcomed me and encouraged me to stay 6 years. I made a lot of friends during my time there. Lovely people,
There is a part of me that only exist when I hear this song. Today I am 75 years old and I wonder what they look like today and if they still believe that we will always be more together than we ever will be apart. I don't speak Japanese I do know how I feel.
What a great homage to Bob Marley and Kyu Sakamoto. The talent of the Japanese people here is formidable. I have only just discovered this video twelve years after it was filmed.
4 years later I still cry listening to this song. I felt in love with Japan when I was a child, then I became a japanologist and I made a 20-day tour just few months before the disaster. My body went back in Italy, but my spirit stands there.
So beautiful. After the earthquake, the tsunami and the Fukushima disaster, they came together to share their love for life with two, beautiful songs. Love and music can help us to get through the darkest times.
Ue wo Muite Arukou Ue o muite arukou (I look up when I walk) Namida ga kobore naiyou ni (So the tears won't fall) Omoidasu haru no hi (Remembering those happy spring days) Hitoribotchi no yoru (But tonight I'm all alone) Ue o muite arukou (I look up when I walk) Nijinda hoshi o kazoete (Counting the stars with tearful eyes) Omoidasu natsu no hi (Remembering those happy summer days) Hitoribotchi no yoru (But tonight I'm all alone) Shiawase wa kumo no ue ni (Happiness lies beyond the clouds) Shiawase wa sora no ue ni (Happiness lies above the sky) Ue o muite arukou (I look up when I walk) Namida ga kobore naiyou ni (So the tears won't fall) Nakinagara aruku (Though my heart is filled with sorrow) Hitoribotchi no yoru (For tonight I'm all alone) (whistling) Omoidasu aki no hi (Remembering those happy autumn days) Hitoribotchi no yoru (But tonight I'm all alone) Kanashimi wa hoshi no kage ni (Sadness hides in the shadow of the stars) Kanashimi wa tsuki no kage ni (Sadness lurks in the shadow of the moon) Ue o muite arukou (I look up when I walk) Namida ga kobore naiyou ni (So the tears won't fall) Nakinagara aruku (Though my heart is filled with sorrow) Hitoribotchi no yoru (For tonight I'm all alone)
If you know the history of why this Japanese song was originally written, then you'll understand why it absolutely fits with the destruction that came from the tsunami that hit Japan in 2011 and the Japanese spirit to be optimistic and look toward better future days ahead in spite of what is. Very moving in the face of the hardship and aftermath of all the destruction.
The choice of this song is so appropriate , honouring the loss, yet determined to move on and help eachother. Everytime I watch this video it brings me to tears. I lived and worked in Japan for 6 years an feel a kinship with them.
And it moves me to tears every time I watch this video. It brings back the memories of this sad day in March 2011, when I watched in disbelieve what was happening in Japan.
Awesome.......good to see that all ages are happily sing this song with full heartily and feeling good and smiles with joyful emotions and so satisfying...happiness song.
Ue o muite arukou, namida ga koborenai youni, omoidasu haruno hi… I am learning those words so I can sing along with them (I am Dutch so it is a bit hard), because they give me such a positive feeling. Many thanks tot the Obuchi family because thanks to them I now can sing the first two lines rather smootly. This song of Kyu Sakamoto truly is a universal song.

That was amazing. I love this song. U once saw the movie with the song Suki Yaki. In the 1970s and I loved this song since. Remembering the people of Japan during the 2011 Tsunami.
After living one year in Sendai, Miyagi as an exchange student, I can say that I did fall in love with that place. People are astonishingly friendly and you can leave your very expensive computer in your bicycle's basket while you go to eat or shopping. Nobody will steal it. :) That's the way everywhere should be. That is only one reason why I love Japan and Sendai. Ganbare Tohoku!
This VIDEO is the people of Japan. They lived, many died in disaster and only pick up and move forward. I am 1/4 Japanese ancestry, an American, and look at this year after year with new resolve. Thank you to steveNAUDO, Kyu Sakamoto RIP and Bob Marley RIP I AM PROUD, ever so PROUD
Here I am again making another comment. Love the changes in tempo not normally done and other interesting variations. The young conductor is refreshingly unassuming. Bravo!
...¡Qué video tan HER-MO-SO!...

Tears flow freely when I hear this. The power of Love lives in all of us, just reach to the only One who has it

I've never heard of a Japanologist. Now have to check if I'm a Koreanologist
You should hear baby dolphins cry as they are slaughtered along with adult dolphins every year in Taiji Japan…
So beautiful. After the earthquake, the tsunami and the Fukushima disaster, they came together to share their love for life with two, beautiful songs. Love and music can help us to get through the darkest times.
love how they mixed 2 cultures together excellent 😊🖤❤💛
I had a beautiful mixed-breed Siamese cat named Sukiyaki. I loved that cat as much as I love this song.
Part of my soul I left in Japan after visiting there on my tour of Viet Nam in the US Navy inn 1965

I’m trying to learn Japanese and I’m confused why they pronounce the ga in Namida ga as “na”, what’s up with that?
@@expeditionfilms1 idk lol prolly a Kanji thing
Beautiful mix. The oldest and youngest singers were the best!

Keren 6 tahun yang lalu
Gw kenal lagu ini dari warkop DKI 😃
When I was in Japan, I love the version of that woman, known for her repertoire. Usually this is her final song
the grandma singing had me ;_;
God Bless Japan as it continues to recover to this day from the terrible disaster of years ago.
Oh! How beautiful the performers are. Twelve years later, so is the song. Love it.
One of the best ever performed...many great years of listening to this version 😊😊😊🎉❤
And it moves me to tears every time I watch this video. It brings back the memories of this sad day in March 2011, when I watched in disbelieve what was happening in Japan.

You are all so wonderful !!!
What a homage, beautiful... I teared up ❤
Hard to believe its been ten years. I stayed up half the night watching the waves roll over the land live. I was horrified. Prayers for Japan.
This video is probably the coolest thing to come out of Japan. It really is a testament to the spirit and philosophy of the people there.
Does their spirit and philosophy coincide with the slaughter of 2000 or more dolphins in Taiji Japan?
japanese song always has a good meaning and message.
salute for japan !

Let's get together
Feel alright
very beautiful and touching. God bless you all.
Lovely spirit. Thankyou
That was very good my dad new this song from the war he was a sniper and met a lot of Japanese but never talked about the war
Very beautiful voices!
I’d like to know who are the 75 morons who gave this a thumbs down, who didn’t like this whimsical, beautiful medley!
Those morons are absolute idiots...fie on them.
Man if you even for a mere moment pay attention to that type of people, you lose the best part of life....😖😖!
Those Morons are Haters! Haters go to Hell!! Im from the Philippines but I love Japan's Culture and Music.
