  • This week, I take the Jeep out on adventure in the mountains of southern Arizona. There, I enjoy an idyllic, stream side campsite, before taking Orangie up to explore at higher elevations where I'm stymied by deep snow. Following a dramatic winch recovery, I head back down to lower elevations to explore a rugged forest road, and enjoy some photogenic, but bland and overcooked cheeseburgers. The episode concludes after a short but strenuous hike in Coronado National Forest.

I'm not on Patreon, so someone should mention to Chris that Genesis has a new Gen3 system, higher cutoffs, better handshaking with smart alternators... and those junk optima batteries. Plus now that he is in AZ, he should consider a mopar steel bumper, with a winch plate and uncover half his radiator before winter ends, if he'd like to keep that new engine happy.

Good winch exercise. One thing to consider. Synthetic winch line stores very little energy. When using a winch damper with synthetic line, it is generally accepted that putting it on the 'mass' is the better practice. This way it is directly acting on the high mass point ( the Flatlink in this case ). This way you don't have to wait for that mass to travel past the damper before it becomes effective if something was to fail in that rigging group. It is also a little handier because it won't reposition itself along the line during the winching. Bee Safe.

    Hi,
My understanding (after ruining two sets of deep cycle batteries) is that the vehicle alternator cuts off the charging when the vehicle battery is full, therefore not charging the house batteries fully. (There is a sign on the counter at batteries plus to that effect, which is why they wouldn't stand behind the warranty.) We put in a C-Tek charge controller and have had no trouble for the last 6 years. 😉

Isolate the starting battery and get a 100ah lithium phosphate battery for the house. Charge it with a renogy 40amp dc to dc charger. The new lithium battery prices are coming down. I have a battle born purchased a couple years ago but have found others I think are just as good for $3-400. • @venture4wd

There’s no set expiration on a Jeep engine. Mine was just at 200k miles and it was a timing issue. The guidance I got was that, at the 200k mark, an engine replacement would be a more cost effective repair than replacing the timing chain. Fixing the timing chain would have bought a little more time, replacing the engine black bought a LOT more time.

@@carpathianoverland You are welcome. I used to be a professional photographer and I have never switched over to video, because I felt that it would overwhelm me. So believe me, I have much respect of people who are making video as I think making video looking good is really not that easy. It probably really takes time for everyone. I am not saying that all the channels that have lots of subscribers are doing good video, not at all. Still, in many instances I could see how UA-camrs have been getting better over time. In your case, specifically I would recommend try to using the go-pro type super wide angle lens much less. Instead use a less wide angle and only if you are showing yourself. Then include more shots that are made with regular camera. Think through your shot prior and then pan the camera nicely, so it does not shake much. Honestly, when I decide to pick a new channel and I believe others may do this as well, I try to pick a channel that has good video. So in that sense it may be harder to stand out for ANY new UA-camr, because in the old days, there was far less UA-camrs, who just had to do something and then later improve their skills. Now it seems starting out, standing out is much harder, because there is already so much content and you need to “start out on the right foot” in order to get noticed. So like said before. I think if you do it long enough and figure out the little details, your channel will eventually take off. Best wishes!

After years of watching your azing adventures, I still don't understand why you don't carry at least an electric chainsaw with you. I carry one every where I go. It's an invaluable tool IMO

I do have a hand saw given to me by a friend. Works great, simple, takes up minimal space. For as often as I’d actually use it (2-3x / year, maybe?), an entire chain saw that can handle jobs bigger than my hand saw can manage takes up a lot of space.

I used the lockers initially, but once bogged down and sinking, I unlocked the axles to see if that could help crawl through the snow without digging/sinking any deeper.

At least you didn’t roll into a water filled ditch this time. Looks staged.

The winch dampener is supposed to be put on at the ANCHOR POINT END to stop the heavy ‘hook’ flying through the windscreen. ⛑️🤕🚑⚰️⚱️🪦💀

it's a synthetic line, if it breaks it'll drop without sending anything flying. I've synthetic at least 6 lines break and not one snapped back like a steel line would, the hook just dropped to the ground
