I used to see the James Gang at The Cellar in Kent, OH when I was attending Kent State University. Joe Walsh, Dale Peters, Jimmy Fox back then (1971). They were good, but we were more interested in $1.00 pitchers of Stroh's beer and girls back then. The band wasn't too happy about that. I think Joe Walsh left the band at the end of 1971. Hope we didn't make him mad. :)
For all the haters, because this isn’t the original lineup, listen again. This is pretty smoking. I prefer the original lineup also. But this version is pretty hot.
Agreed. Ray Kenner can sing his own material pretty well (good example is an appearance on Midnight Special), but trying to work his own version of a great Joe Walsh song is just wrong.
As soon as I saw the singer messing around with the kit I immediately thought "oh no". When he tried to play the congas but got lost and confused I thought "yeah, that's about right". And why did he just stand on the side of the stage like a creeper!?
Its raw, and its not Joe Walsh, but at least its more authentic and rock than most of the recent live versions that Joe plays behind some backing band that sounds like a rock n roll review. Worst version is from Crossroads music fest 2004. Anyway, random but I enjoyed it.
The junkie couldn't even keep the gunk off his neck and played with rusty strings. How the hell didn't they break? I change before every show and still occasionally break strings. That and this is an embarrassing performance.
@@atcycle Really? This the 1st time you ever heard Tommy Bolin play? Yeah he liked his coke but he was in a league of his own, guitar-wise. Check some of his solo stuff...

I know, the "it" factor...they look great but, that "something" is missing. We also don't know if the audience reaction at the end was edited in or not. Either way, for these guys, "the show must go on" and they did the best with what they had. Classic rock staple songs are not always easy to reproduce with replacements and Joe Walsh is a tough act to follow; to some of us, the man is "legend".
Tommy has chops for days (at least until he destroyed himself), but can't match the feeling of Joe Walsh. The singer makes it feel like a Glee cover of the song.
Joe left because ABC records kept the band grom recording for 2 years. You can't blame the rhythm section for moving on without him. Record Companies screwed 99% of everyone they signed. Look it up.
Still the beginning of JG, songs and all! I love Walsh forever, he did perfect in replacing the original member, i never knew it was Tommy Bolin; Jesus C 💞👏👏👏
Here's your comment, Mr.Why the hell you show the Bongo player? The whole time Joe was on the slide. I playing this cracked Jack a** off. He's playing his assoFF
Tommy Bolin The same guy that tried to replace Blackmore and failed miserably. He might have had greater success replacing the greats if he had honored the source material 1%.
i wanna hear the other 48 funks
Well there is a Funk #48
And a Funk #50 too
Yes
This is funked up without joe. Sorry
well there's Grand Funk 🤔😁
Growing up in Sioux City I remember when Tommy Bolin was the towns beloved #1 son. RIP Tommy you are missed!
Tommy Bolin played on the Billy Cobham Spectrum album. It changed the direction of Rock and Fusion 🙏🎸
I will check that out. My drummer friend in high school said his favorite drummer was Billy Cobham.

The Cellar, Strohs and the James Gang. It doesn't get better than that.
Saw them at St.Joe HS on Cleveland. No beer to distract us. The girls, however were hot ; but so was the Band. Long may the James Gang ride!
Joe did okay...ended up with the Eagles and also a good solo career (Rocky Mountain Way)
Needs more Joe Walsh
and more James. and Gang.
Bolin = master
29yo here and I can say this is so insane bro! holy sh....t
He loved his Echoplex
Thank you.
Hey, the way Ray went off to the side and slipped his ring off before getting into the drums cant be overlooked.
For all the haters, because this isn’t the original lineup, listen again. This is pretty smoking. I prefer the original lineup also. But this version is pretty hot.
Not really.
Yeah apart from the mix on the backup vocals being too soft this is dynamite
@@m.b.82Couldn’t have said it better.
Guitar tone is crap
Only Joe's voice works with this song.
Agreed. Ray Kenner can sing his own material pretty well (good example is an appearance on Midnight Special), but trying to work his own version of a great Joe Walsh song is just wrong.
And his guitar playing and tone😂😂😂😂
I remember watching this in In Concert around 1974ish
It has been said that Funk 27 is also quite the jam.
Just wait a second here
There's only one James Gang and this ain't it by a long shot.
You're being too precious. This a cool version.
@@ChrisLawton66 Especially with Tommy
still rips tho
James Gang > The Eagles
@@MrBeyondbelief Only WITH Walsh.
The post-Walsh version was inferior.
Love this song. High school boyfriend turned me on to it.❤
What else did he turn you on to little girl .....in High School circa 1977😁 .....No, no just joking peace out young lady✌🦋🙋
No Joe Walsh but damn! Tommy Bolin was a superstar on guitar
Yes ! Exactly 💥💥💥
Been hollerin' that til I'se blue in the face!
Tommy Bollin also played some great stuff on Billy Cobham’s “Spectrum” album
Was ne geile Scheisse. Haben wir früher viel im Club gehört. Zugedröhnt kam das heavy!!!!!!!!!
Sorry but this Rocks!!! Didn’t realize JG went on without Joe. Love it.
Me TOO!! God help me!! I LOVE this!! Undeniably, UNEQUIVOCALLY, it ROCKS!!
Come on gentleman this sucks bad.😂
Tommy B. Was the 3rd James Gang guitarist. Domenic Troiano was right after Joe Walsh.
Tommy Bolin on the Stratocaster!!
That tone sounds like crap😂😂😂
So much energy
You are so going to hear my bass!!!
To think, the following year, Bolin will replace Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple, then sadly pass the year after that
Watched this several times for the rare Tommy Bolin footage.
Yeah but that sucked too....I guess its histoty
It’s rare even in this video 😅
So killer.
whats with the hate on this video? sounds killer.
Tommy Bolin so beautiful 💜
Sorry fellas --- they ain't no James Gang without Joe Walsh. It sounds pretty fair though.
Tommy Bolin is the real deal
Not the same James Gang -- they're not worthy!
Love this - especially Bolin - but - who is the singer?
Roy Kenner. He was there for 3 or 4 years after Joe Walsh.
I love that TeleStrat.
Are you referencing the headstock?
I prefer the version with Joe singing.
His guitar playing was way better than this too!!!
As soon as I saw the singer messing around with the kit I immediately thought "oh no". When he tried to play the congas but got lost and confused I thought "yeah, that's about right". And why did he just stand on the side of the stage like a creeper!?
It’s a parody I guess lol
He literally played on the one every measure and was in time what’re you talking about
Aye he was bang on in time!
@@PantyhoseExperience 😅😅
His conga work was great, dummy, and why are you using the word "creeper" if you don't have a vagina?
This version kind of bothered me. The thing that was missing was original members of the James Gang.

saw the james gang twice once with joe and once without , amazes me how it took two people to replace him
Tommy Bolin a great guitarist and singer and this is a fantastic song.
And now you know why the band didn't work after Joe Walsh left.
100%
Good smoke bongs

He relied too heavily on gimmicky weird sound effects- he was basic at best

What, and who the hell is this? An alternate sucking reality timeline?
This has a cover band vibe.
I put Tommy Bolin up Top with the Finest Jamming Guitarist. i dig that other Bolan's Rock too
Not the funk 49 I'm used too
This just isn't IT.

I agree. ……. This version is OK…. Tommy Bolin was a great guitarist. … but……. Joe Walsh and his vocals is the best version of this tune !!!!!!
Love Tommy, but this ain't his song
Tommy Bolin (guitarist) had great potential but died way too young. This rendition, however, is painful. Yikes.
That’s horrible. Joe Walsh was The James Gang.
Tommy has chops for days (at least until he destroyed himself), but can't match the feeling of Joe Walsh. The singer makes it feel like a Glee cover of the song.

That's the one and only, and late, Tommy Bolin. After Walsh departed.
hey tommy is great!
This is a clown show
what year is this?
This is way better than I expected without Joe.
Rare Tommy Bolin footage.
I think they're playing this a step or so down from the original recording. Joe must have had a higher vocal range.
Joe Walsh was the James gang period this is bad impersonation lol
Circus show
Where's Joe? 😮
Who is this 4 piece band?
What a clusterfuck!
Kinda like The Doors without Jim Morrison. 🙄
to quote Kim Mitchell, that singer is a lot of feathers, but not much chicken.
This isn't James gang
Tommy Bolin!!
Tommy Bolin puts Joe Walsh in his Pocket.
Thats not James Gang
Yes it is.
this ain't THE JAMES GANG so WTF is up with the false misleading title????
James Gang needed Joe Walsh more the Eagles.
Tommy who?
