Joe Walsh is such kickass guitarist, songwriter and American musical treasure.
Absolutely he's one of the best and he's kicking ass in his older age and he lays It Down original like, I'm glad I grew up in that era!
Wow ...you must be the suckass!!
You said it! He sounds amazing and what a genuinely nice cool dude!
He should be President in 2024
And these guys got started in the next town over, in Kent when i was 14.
Opening lick is iconic , song is a must learn on guitar. James Gang is one of the most underrated bands ever.
Completely agree.
Always been partial to Les Pauls, but I'm in awe of just how fat he is making that Strat sound. Dude is one of the greatest electric guitar players of all time, no doubt about it.
He plays so clean and his voice is still in top shape. Such a talent.
F Amaya This was 13 years ago...joe has aged a lot since this. He sure did rock here. Joe is a living legend!!
His voice is shut and always has but his guitar skills are still there no doubt about that dude
Jim Fox, one of the greats
he was always intimidated by glenn and don's voices. i hope by now he realizes people love him just as much or more than those guys. the eagles legacy would not have been the same without him
Voice sounded amazing, still has that cool rasp
The blond backing singer totally gets it!
Now THAT was badass. Joe is a goddamn legend.
trash mouth
Always 👍
I am very glad he got out of the 80's alive. Not sure how, but he did it.
Howard is super lucky to see this! Holy Cow!
This is actually the best live performance I’ve heard of this song 🤘🏻
So great to see Dale and Jim are still around. Very talented.
Kudos for drummer Jim Fox - the T-shirt is priceless.
The Eagles needed Joe way more than Joe needed the Eagles that's for sure
Without question
Joe's guitar style of mixing the rhythm and lead changed their sound.
I agree 100 percent.
Preach on!
There is a big reason why Hotel California is their best fucking album by a mile.
That’s not true, but it was match made in heaven for rock and roll
I've never heard it said better! Joe turns everything he touches to gold.
This performance was crazy perfect, everyone was on top of their craft.
Jimmy Fox is a beast on drums!!!!!
My opinion Joe Walsh is one of the most underrated guitarist/musicians out there. Was my very first concert I ever saw back in 1980. He's excellent! Rock on Joe!
Even if Joe wasn't one of the best rock guitarists of all time he'd still be one of my favorite people.
@Paul Leach Say what? Rock, country, joe is up there dude when it comes to playing dude, Trust me.
@@markesertalkink8723 Read what he said again.
He is one of a kind, that's for sure.
But he is!
Paul Leach dead on. Technically nobody is ever going to confuse Joe with the best but he maybe the most enthusiastic guitar player of all time and he’s a great entertainer. Plus the best “guitar face” in the Business.
Forget the Eagles. Forget Ringo and his All-Starr Band. When the virus gets through running its course, the James Gang MUST ride again.
yes Darrin !
I agree!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Joe playing the opening riff sounded EXACTLY like the studio version from 50 years ago. Incredible player.
There is a live recording that is a bit sloppy, but good sloppy, in the middle , right before a lead break , Joe mutters ' be right back' ; then does it & lands back on vocals right on time.dude justs oozes rhythm & groove
Killer. My band covered this tune. Hearing joe play it makes me realize we never got it 100% right lol
My jaw dropped open when I heard that - amazing!
Best version of Funk 49 I've ever heard!
Lot of features in live versions of this song added since the original studio album recording: 2:35 the octave bend, 3:06 harmonics, 3:17 syncopation, and, of course, the 3:22 delay to finish (vs. the original fade out). This Howard Stern Show performance is the best recording I have heard with these features. I also appreciate all of the percussion instruments--the cowbell, agogo, vibra slap, maracas, shaker, etc.; all fits together nicely.
I'm 70. Still love that music.
Most useful backup singers I've ever seen, each one played various percussion instruments at some point. Awesome.
Who are they?
Except that blonde one with the cowbell, she's far off-beat several times :-P
Everyone is just tearing this up, Guitar, bass, drums, percussions, vocals; awesome!
Another album I wore down to the nubs "James Gang Rides Again" - a true classic.
I listened to this song one hundred billion times as a kid in the 70"s
Joe's one of the funniest guys around, mainly because he's honest. He doesn't remember a 30 year block of time but he's been told he had a good time. Hard to believe that this was almost 13 years ago. Fox, Peters and Walsh definitely the best lineup in Jimmys band. Fox is an underrated drummer for sure.
There are so many amazing guitar players out there but Joe Walsh never fails to blow my mind when I see him play live. How does he do that?!
I learned most of my drum licks from jimmy fox from the james gang yer album...years later i met him at a gas station and shot the shit with him. He was really kool...thanks jim
Them chicks got damn good voices. Awesome performance love Walsh and all his projects.
Dale Peters and Jimmy Fox were the best rhythm section Joe ever had. MONSTERS !!!!
Hell yes!!!!!
Drums - Joe Vitale, forever.
As much as I like Peters and Fox, I'd have to say it's Passarelli and Vitale for me.
I’ve always thought what if he’d stayed with The James Gang, and recruited Don Felder into the fold. What a band that would have been!
Is this the original bassist in this video?
Smooth like silk and edgy like broken glass at the same time. Amazing.
Well Said!!
Quite possibly the greatest funk song of all time...which never EVER grows old.
James Gang was outstanding, be nice if they’d ride again.
One of my favorites of the day. I'm old.. how old? I wore out the 8 track tape playing this song...lol
It took my journey through the Eaglwe, some of Joe's solo stuff to find James Gang
Unfortunately they've probably ridden into the sunset
fucking a man
I love that Joe is still rocking so clean and cool. And those backup singers are so hot and talented. wow.
That was freaking tight. Awesome version. One of my fav songs growing up.
Whoever is mixing sound is doing an awesome job it sounds incredible this setting shows you what a band can do and these peeps are smoking hot Joe just gets better with age and the girls are beautiful and sing like Angels :-)
Seen a few bands on Stern and they always sound fantastic.
Wow that was Awesome. Joe looks young as Heck. The ladies are not only singing back up but, playing instruments as well, not to mention beautiful! Well done James Gang!!
The fact that he is still alive is amazing on it's own...he's a bada$$!
Oh well....life's been good..☺
Nothing like a good ole Stratocaster in the hands of somebody who knows how to play it! Still my favorite song that they did, and to sound as good today as when they did it originally years ago. And what a blistering different song for back then. Made me a James Gang fan forever!
Gawddamn Joe!!
Wow! One of the great alltime guitarists, with one of the great alltime rock guitar songs, and positively singing your ass off!! Girls killin' it, too, just fantastic, an absolute pleasure!
Awesome drum solo with all pitching in was unbelievable! Fox is soooo underrated!
So Cool! The James Gang really rides again! One of classic rocks REAL classics.❤
We all have memories with songs attached to them. This is one of them. It never gets old.....Thanks Joe.
The Eagles brought Joe Walsh to my ears!! Joe has become one of my faves as of late. Through him I have found the James Gang. Fantastic guitarist!!!!!
Saw him live on British tv circa 1973, playing from this and 'The Smoker you Get', he was brilliant. They did this and 'Stop' and I instantly booked to see them in London. SadlyJoe's son died and I never saw him. Great to see him in such fine fettle - underrated, always love his playing and singing. Enjoyed his stuff on the echoplex as on 'The James Gang Live.'
I love Joe Walsh...have for a long time...so freaking gifted...❤️👴✌️️
How is it that Joe's holding a Les Paul at the very beginning when he's talking to Howard, and a second later when they start playing, he's got a Stratocaster? Maaaaaagic
Even Chuck Norris couldn't pull that off.
@@canadianroot Chuck Norris doesn't play the wrong guitar. He has Alex Lifeson play it for him.
Stevie Ray Vaughan was his guitar roadie.
They played walk away too
Skills and magic
Joe sounds amazing! Always been a fan of his
Joe is the man
That was just cool AF! When Joe Walsh is around good music follows. I remember the James Gang when I was a teenager back in the day.
These guys sound awesome. Great timing and grooving.
Just like the old days!
Close your eyes and realize this is still one of the best songs ever! Than open your eyes and know that this is still one of the best songs ever, led by one of the coolest musicians ever!
Bought the live album back in 72....I listened to it so many times I can play the entire album in my head....no need for a turn table 🤣
Really one of the best guitarists ever.. Has the distinction of giving Jimmy page his 1st les Paul ... Goodbye Tele. And history was made.
@Jimmy Jameson Really? That's interesting, I never knew that. Good to know.
@@suncookrocks Here: www.guitarplayer.com/players/jimmy-page-talks-about-his-number-1-1959-gibson-les-paul
Actually, Jimmy Page in his early years as a sessions player, bought a black Les Paul Custom (three pickup) guitar in 1962!
James Gang, the purest iteration of the 'Joe Show', in my opinion
Loved James Gang!!! Joe was never in a bad band. And you can tell when he was with any of the 1's that he played in
Joe Walsh sounds fantastic, and he is a big music hero for me, but on this one I gotta give my love to the rhythm section: incredible drum/bass groove, tone, and taste!!! So glad y'all are back together - I'm about to search to see if there is a James Gang tour going on - if so, I am catching a show for sure!!!
1 of the best versions I’ve heard! Joe, you never needed the Eagles brother, but they surely did need you. Just awesome. Keep it going Sir
Joe Walsh says to Jimmy Page, "Hey, I got this '59 Burst you gotta see" And the rest is history!!
Right!? There ya go.
Yep !! Joe is so important to the history of rock, What an absolute legend !! Too top it off he got Jimmy Page to open up his wallet......not an easy task so I hear ??
Yeah That's a 4 Hundred Thousand Dollar Guitar...On It's Own & With The Jimmy Page & Joe Walsh Association It's Priceless...
So cool to hear these guys live! Wow! I learned about this song awhile back and jammed it on my drums. It is such a killer tune! These guys should tour.
Aah that drummer is the best I’ve ever seen.
Excellent sound for that little space! Band sounds phenomenal!
The mix on this is fantastic! Highly enjoyable
The Sole Pursuit agreed. Sounds like a track on an album.
Yes it was. Tom
Love it! James Gang is legendary Rock Band and Joe is my favourite musician for all times. His talent is incredible!
What a great jam… And Jesus, the girl with the tambourine and cowbell…!!!
Joe Walsh is a guitar god, this should have a bajillion views & likes. Thanks Howard, you rock!
I still remember back when Joe left drunken voice-mails on Gary's machine😂 So happy he pulled himself together and so is anyone who loves good rock music.
Cleveland’s own James Gang! Great performance!
Good Lord....As good as ever....What a song....what a performance....bravo Joe.
How fuckin awesome was that?
Rock n roll forever
Badass! Love it! Joe Walsh is a hell of a guitar player. He’s glow melted my iPhone!
perfection, no matter what.. everything Joe touches is gold...thank you!! 73
The drummers shirt is awesome!
Hey buddy a Cleveland'r right here Streetsboro I'm still playing at 71, keep going bro hope to meet someday. Saw the James Gang at the agora when you guys started. Loved them guitars echoing side to side wow.
God bless Tom Tracy
oh wow I literally didn't think it would sound as good as the studio recording but it did. He is getting better with age. Totally amazing.
This performance is a good amount better than the studio version! The backup singers are amazing! -- and the modified middle guitar solo is a very good improvement.
Can you imagine the vibe in that time and space....that was awesome just to watch.
'If I knew how many times I would have to play the solo in Hotel California I wouldn't have made it so hard!' . A real class act.
I remember I used to pray to God that the station I was listening to would not play the freaking short version so I could hear the lil jam , the scream in the background , then the breakdown .
MAJOR PROPS !!Those effin back up singers!! SPOT ON HOT ! We need more of this revival
Saw Joe live at a little casino a few years ago. Awesome performance. His live shows are just works of art. He isn't happy if it doesn't sound superb.
Joe is another modern day Jimi James Hendrix I say this with kind words because Joe is a cool blues guitarist he knows his riffs . Great Guy For Sure
i love those ladies i went to see the Eagles at Safeco Field in Seattle, it was ok, kinda sleepy until Joe's rock set, and this song.. blew the roof off the joint !!!!!!!!! psychedlia
It was after watching a Joe Walsh video years ago I realized I’d been playing Whole Lotta Love wrong my whole life...lol Thanks Joe.
WOW!!! This brings back some memories! I actually bought the album this was on (James Gang Rides Again), in 1973, and I had no idea at the time how good it would be until I listened to it. This is the song that *REALLY* stood out above the rest. Wish I knew where that record was today.. might actually be worth some money.😁🎵🎶👍
I've never heard him sound bad live, amazing
I don't think I've ever heard Joe play bad
I did, NY, C.W. Post College Dome ~'74 or '75, he was so f--ed up on stage that he was slurring he's words and acting really bizarre, missing notes, it broke my heart and I had front row seats! He had bicycle horns on his mic stand that he would randomly honk. he was wearing a train conductors hat that had cards pinned to it, It was like a freak show, incoherently talking nonsense between songs, he seemed like he was an asylum escapee. (but I love you Joe, thanks for all the great songs, so far....)
Joe Walsh is so cool!! I do believe that Howard has the best sound engineers in the biz👍👍What a great little studio he has there.
Sure it's Joe Walsh, but the cowbell is the real star of the show here.
Joe is so underrated as a guitarist.
One of the best performances of all time in my opinion
Ah, very fond memories of the James Gang, great song and Joe was always underrated. But the Eagles didn't think so, keep on going Joe!
Outstanding.....the whammy pedal lick was a sweet touch
Coming in for the guitar solo I thought Joe lost the timing of the beat but he somehow lands perfectly. I love when musicians do that.
True
Not only one of the greatest rock guitarist ever, one of these greatest rock singers. Saw him live sing a higher parallel Harmony with his Protege guitarist singing The Melody to Rocky Mountain Way Through the whole song. What pipes! What a rocker!
Those girls weren't even born when this song first came out.
And they look it...which is good. ; )
Who cares? They have talent and passion for music so I don't see what your getting at
But they sound amazing!!
Ha ha - who cares - they're having a great time and rockin it too!
Who cares? Harmonies are spot on.
First saw Joe play this live on April 17, 1971 at Defiance College in Ohio. James Gang had just released their album "Thirds," so we also got to hear one of Joe's finest new songs "Walk Away" that memorable Saturday night.
Timeless, the man is timeless!
What can you say, but WOW, sounds just like the recording....Always enjoyed listening to this song in Nam...
Joe steals every stage he’s ever been on
He does a good job, yeah
James Gang was my very first concert at a place called Chippewa Lake in Ohio. I was just a kid. They were a simple 3 piece Rock Band. These guys didn't play Rock n Roll...They played Rock! One if the very best concerts I've ever seen and they were all very young then.
Those girls sound GREATTTTT!
Not the sound...but the blond showing what she got👀
