Well living in New Zealand the land of Hobbits, it was about time I carved a Smaug inspired Dragons Eye. This Carving was from the Wood - Rimu - a New Zealand wood that was used a lot in housing before treated timbers took over here. Its quite a strange wood to carve it is quite strong but is sometimes brittle as well, fast moving burrs tend to leave burn marks as well. Really happy with how this turned out.

Amazing piece Matt, the scales are really well done. I would never of thought to make the eye separately. Only one problem with it... where's the rest of the dragon?? 😄 Thanks for showing the burrs you're using, i'll just add them to my wish list!
ha ha yeah the rest of the dragon will have to wait. Maybe I should buy a chainsaw 😀
Wow, another awesome carving. Just realized that your a Kiwi too, I'm down the Kapiti coast. Do you run classes? I would be keen to learn how to carve 3d. I just scored a bit of old rimu and I'm turning it into a photo frame for my daughter's 1st birthday. Keep the videos coming.
yeah small world. I'm down in Christchurch. Sorry I don't run any classes, maybe one day. cheers for your support, hope the frame turns out well 👍
Love it Matt, what sand paper grit do you prefer to use after staining?
I think it was 220 and then I used a sanding sponge thats probably about 400grit. Hope you get a new dremel soon.
That is Awesome! Which Dremel do you recommend using? I have an older model 3000 and want to know if it is up to the task of doing things like this.
So I use a dremel 4000 and I carve mainly hardwoods. I reckon the 3000 is probably good enough. I can't say for sure as have never used a 3000, but worth using it, as you already have it. Cheers for watching
Excellent detailed carving! Love the colour too, is the stain anything special, just wondering if it’s available here in the UK?
Just looking on the bottle now it actually is from the UK. So its called Briwax, colour fast wood dye. its spirit based and the colour I used is Antique Mahogany. hope that
helps
@@MattCarves Great, thank you 👍
My grandson is trying to replicate the eye for his dragon but not sure what products you’re using. He lives in AZ/US and has been studying your video. Are you able to give specific products names and cations for the eye componets, so we can find here in the US?
Sorry I cant give specific names as the products are made in New Zealand, they are also somewhat toxic ( I use them in my day job and wear safety gear. But essentially you could do the same with oven baked clay (such as scuptey), acrylic paints, and a water based art varnish
Thank you!
That looks really great. I need to get some wood to you to try. You'd make something epic. Have you tried Irish bog oak. Been in the bogs preserved by the peat, the deeper the older and blacker. Mines approximately 3/5 thousand years young. Would love to see someone professional work thier magic.🏴🧙♂️😁🏴
Cheers Charles sounds like some awesome wood. I have carved in oak but not swamp oak. although I have carved in some swamp Kauri it was a bit brittle. Anyway cheers for watching 👍
Amazing stuff, any tips for cutting hexagon scales?
Not sure about hexagonal scales but here is a detailed video on how I carved these ones
