Happy Holidays! My upload schedule is currently all out of balance due to me being on winter break but I plan on putting out some original content very soon (hopefully regularly) - including some brand new music ;) For now, I made another launchpad tutorial targeted at beginners out there who may be getting into the community this holiday season. Hopefully this video will better acquaint you with how to make your first launchpad cover. Enjoy!
InspirAspir Thank you so much for making this video. This is by far the best and most detailed tutorial on the internet about getting started in Ableton Live Lite. I am sure you will help many people that are getting started on their launchpad journey. 🎅🌟 Merry Christmas!! 🎁🎄
@5:50, after typing the number in the midi mappings max column, go back and deselect 'midi' in the top right corner to activate the buttons. BTW: Thank you! This tutorial is exactly what I needed having minimal experience with Launchpad/Ableton I'm learning bits that are very useful.
Hi InspirAspir, you are a LIFE SAVER. I learnt so much from this video and I actually had a lot of fun using the software and my launchpad. I bought it yesterday and I feel like I'm progressing at a good speed. At first, I thought that it was hard to manoeuvre around the software, so this video seriously gave me hope, faith and inspiration. Thank you so much for what you do, you're an amazing person and I hope you'll be blessed in 2018! :)
Also, your instructions were really clear. I'm watching this video from Singapore by the way! I'm currently doing up a K-pop song cover. I'll be sure to put you in the description of my video to thank you! I really appreciate your hard work and I hope your passion never dies!
Hey thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to say that and I love all the support. I'm happy to hear I helped you out, best of luck with all your future projects! Cheers
It's actually explained very good. Ableton is complicated software so maybe u wanna take notes on important stuff. This way u don't get confused so easy. Also: click along while watching this kind of videos. It really helps do do the steps yourself
Bro but we should know na how to do it correctly and put different background.. this is like ik that we can make launchpad project using Ableton but i should know how to work on Ableton
This is what I was looking for. I have not purchased my Launchpad Pro yet, because I wanted to get a feel for what it can do and how to make it do it. Thank you very much for such helpful content made for a novice.
When working on a Launchpad Mini once you register all the pages to buttons you have to press the Map button right of the words Instrument Rack/MIDI Effect Rack and then press the side buttons 1-8 and then press Map again and it should work.
I don’t even own one of these or plan on buying one (I just wanted to know what the hell this thing was) but you have got to be one of the best teachers on UA-cam dude. I seriously reset my email password to log into UA-cam and looked for you again to leave this comment!!! I’m sure a lot of people will now make great music thanks to you.
I had the same problem. Step one is to go to the preferences and make sure they are correct. Then you can follow along and make sure you are on User 1. To get to the preferences you can click options and it should be at the bottom or click Ctrl+. GO to link MIDI and find Control Surface. Select your launchpad ( in our case Launchpad MK2) as well as the three other blocks in that row(Control Surface, Input and Output). Then under MIDI ports for input turn on Track and remote and for output turn on all three. It should be good from there. I hope this helps.
I’m still waiting on my launchpad to deliver, here’s some positive feedback on this video. You don’t sit there rambling on for 5 minutes on what the video will be about, you get into it very fast and explain the video really well. Good job. Here is a subscribe and a like. Edit: Took a lot of troubleshooting but it worked. Thank you
whenever i press MIDI and go to the top right button and hold it and pressed the bottom right and it didnt do anything. ive been trying to fix it since christmas please help!
I got Launchpad mk2 and rather than assigning only the page buttons 1-8, its assigned all 8 rows of buttons to change pages, meaning that the bottom 8 buttons for me change to 1st page, 2nd to 2nd page, etc. I don't know if this is the same problem, but ive had trouble assigning it to only the page numbers and not the actual buttons.
Try clicking the User 1 button if your using the Mark 2. I think maybe it should fix it, I'm probably just an idiot but just try if you haven't clicked the User 1 button
Great tutorial! Just one thing if you press CTRL while dragging the files ableton will put each sample/stem in a separate track. Thanks for the tutorial.
Thank u so much, it took me a total of 2hrs just get get my launch pad set up and the lights working properly but this video has helped me so much more then just reading, huge huge thank you for making an awersom video
This is what I was waiting for! You’ve already helped me so much so I’ve already learnt how to do everything I need to thanks to you! Still dropped a like...
This is exactly what I need! why did I not see this when I needed it most! I used your previous tutorial and only got as far as starting the lights, I have no idea still on how to do that, launchpad pro is collecting dust I cant do anything with it :P
Hate to tell you, but the MK3 doesn’t work with it, those buttons have to be MIDI values, but the MK3 uses Control Change so it won’t work. Can you take it back and get a MK2?
I really don't understand how did I find this tutorial only now and not like... a half year ago.. But really, thanks man I really needed this tutorial 'cause I wanna buy a launchpad and I was afraid I wouldn't know what to do when I'll get it. Really thanks!!!
eeee seen all your launchpad tutorials (possibly more than once) and I have been very useful not only to launchpad cover, if not, just to know how to sample only wanted to clarify if in some talk of choke or choke groups for Prevent the sounds from getting hot when you shoot the next sample.
Guys I have a question I got a launchpad and my two bottom rows are not working is that normal they don’t work but when I plug it in the lights turn on
Very nice thank you but i have a question : can we download a launchpad cover from other people ??? Because i’ve been seeing on youtube many persons doing the same cover...
i had the same problem on my Launchpad S. but i found a way to fix it. go to preferences in the options menu and go to the Link Midi section then go to the Midi ports spot and look at input and click on the first square under the word Track until it says "ON". then click the first square under the word Remote and click on it until it says "ON" then go on the last square under the word Input and click on it until it says "ON" then do the same under the word Remote, click on the last square until it says "ON". Leave everything else off and you should be good to go! I hope this helped you! :)
Mistiguss For a Launchpad Mini, only Green, Yellow, and Red will be able to be mapped onto it. I recommend the original Launchpad for various colors. Do you have trouble inserting the original RGY colors?
restricted fox top of the launchpad has 8 buttons first four are for navigating session mode on the pad the 6th and 7th button are user 1 and user 2 if you don't have the sticker label for ableton on ur pad I recommend placing it on there especially if you only plan on using ableton as your DAW
trying different methods and redoing the tutorial from the beginning I couldn't get my page 6 pads to have a solid red as you did at around 7:14 if you do help out it'd mean a lot! Edit: 1 Year later and still having this same issue, funnily enough, it now lights grey when activated. Fix: Making the Out HI and Out LOW the same number makes it stay the one selected colour instead of appearing as though it chooses a random number in the range
my issue is it turns red no matter if I click page 6 or not. The second I change the velocity it turns red without me choosing to use page 6 and then it wont turn back unless I set the velocity back.
As soon as I start this tutorial I can't even get my launchpad to react! The buttons on the top which says 12345 is lighting up, but the lights doesn't show up and it does neither show up in the drum rack where I'm pressing. Please help, I have a Launchpad Mini with Ableton Live 10 Trial.
I don't know how active you are in responding to comments but I'm having issues. I'm doing this on a MK2, and when I follow your steps for setting up the lights track (clicking "In," selecting my launchpad, and setting to channel 6) and press buttons on the launchpad, no lights appear. I get feedback like you do with Ableton itself, but no lights on my launchpad. It definitely isn't defective as it lights up when I plug it in, so I'm not sure what the issue is. Any ideas?
Also a problem that I thought I fixed just came back. When I arm the samples track, the entire first column of buttons on my launchpad turn red. When I press one, it acts as the play button in ableton. I'm so lost and frustrated right now because I feel lilke I'm doing things right but it's not turning out. Thanks in advance.
Final question, promise. This again wasn't a problem before but came when the red buttons did. When I press a button on the launchpad to see what button in the drum rack it corresponds to, no buttons light up. Again, they did before, but now they don't. So sorry for my cluelessness.
Sorry for the late response, are you in User1 mode? The default upon booting up is Session mode (which has the column of lights you saw, which is why I think you may have been in this mode), which doesn't quite work for what we're making here
go to preferences in the options menu and go to the Link Midi section then go to the Midi ports spot and look at input and click on the first square under the word Track until it says "ON". then click the first square under the word Remote and click on it until it says "ON" then go on the last square under the word Input and click on it until it says "ON" then do the same under the word Remote, click on the last square until it says "ON". Leave everything else off and you should be good to go! I hope this helped you! :)
@Jenn1ng, I had this same problem, i take it you didn't read the manual either?... It's already been three months, but i'll leave this here for anyone that might face this same issue. Open Ableton Live, go to options, then choose preferences. Choose Midi Sync, then make sure that the first control surface, input, and output are all your launchpad. After that, look for the track, sync, and remote options on the bottom of the same screen. Make sure that for your LAUNCHPAD ONLY, choose Track On and Remote on for input, and everything else on for output, again, only for your launchpad.
omg do we have to add a sound file for every button I was thinking about buying a novation launchpad mini but I did not know that you have to do all this man this will be a nightmare to setup I'm rethinking on buying it now
I used to have a launch pad pro, but I never knew what how to make a light show with it so I ended up selling it now I have the launch pad Mini these types of videos did not exist whenever I had my launch pad pro so thank you inspire asper for uploading these types of videos they are a major help to my light show production i And now I know how to make AM thanks to you keep on making good content.
Hi! I have a launchpad MK2 and When I select chain selector and press the two buttons, it doesn’t say the same numbers and letters as yours and it doesn’t work when I try to move the orange line by pressing the buttons after. Do you know how I could fix this?
hello InspirAspir! I just bought my new Launchpad Mini MK3 after watching your teaching tutorials. But, when I'm trying to midi maping for the pages (at 5:34) selecting for chain selector, it is unable to activate any of that page buttons. Moreover at 5:43 in the video, that also not appearing in my Ableton Live Lite 10. Can you please help me with this problem... that would be great helpful for my startup. Thank You!
Just found out that If you open the settings of your lunchpad by holding down the session button and then press the purple button on the right it'll switch to legacy mode which should work. (it did for me at least) the only downside is that you have to re-enable legacy mode every time you plug it in
This is a fairly old vid but there is still a dearth of LP content, sadly. That said, if you are following along here, using a Launchpad X in Custom modes, then you may find yourself stuck around 4:02... Make sure that you select(ed) the proper Out for your Lights track... There will be at least 2 for the LP... Ironically, using "Launchpad X Output" is wrong; you want to select "MIDIOUT2 (LPX MIDI). :)
Happy Holidays! My upload schedule is currently all out of balance due to me being on winter break but I plan on putting out some original content very soon (hopefully regularly) - including some brand new music ;)

@5:50, after typing the number in the midi mappings max column, go back and deselect 'midi' in the top right corner to activate the buttons. BTW: Thank you! This tutorial is exactly what I needed having minimal experience with Launchpad/Ableton I'm learning bits that are very useful.

You deserve so much more than what you have right now on UA-cam.
Wow.
You are the best at making tutorials!
Hey thank you! I appreciate the kind words and your support
06:10 you if it doesn't work, un-click the midi button first, and then try to select your pages with your launchpad

Extra tip: Hold "cmd" or "ctrl" when dragging in your stems to automatically assign each one to its own track.
Haha was just about to comment this but you beat me to it! Thanks :)

Try clicking the User 1 button if your using the Mark 2. I think maybe it should fix it, I'm probably just an idiot but just try if you haven't clicked the User 1 button
Brilliant detailed video 😁
2:26. I got lost here. I have a mk2 but the lights weren't showing up. I also use ableton 10 lite
Carter Ellis yeah I need help too, that part is very important
SAME HERE! I have a Launchpad Mini Ableton Live 10 Trial
If you guys are confused about what these things do the instrument rack allows it to hold a drum rack that allows you to place samples for playing
Go to options then preferences then link midi then set the input and output as ur launchpad
Maybe you forget to click an user 1 or user 2.
Great tutorial! Just one thing if you press CTRL while dragging the files ableton will put each sample/stem in a separate track. Thanks for the tutorial.

Fix: Making the Out HI and Out LOW the same number makes it stay the one selected colour instead of appearing as though it chooses a random number in the range

my issue is it turns red no matter if I click page 6 or not. The second I change the velocity it turns red without me choosing to use page 6 and then it wont turn back unless I set the velocity back.

go to preferences in the options menu and go to the Link Midi section then go to the Midi ports spot and look at input and click on the first square under the word Track until it says "ON". then click the first square under the word Remote and click on it until it says "ON" then go on the last square under the word Input and click on it until it says "ON" then do the same under the word Remote, click on the last square until it says "ON". Leave everything else off and you should be good to go! I hope this helped you! :)
i had the same problem and it helped, thank you so much! :)
but now there is another problem... all 64 buttons switch pages too :/
just go back and do the tutorial again or reset it and try it from the beginning
Make sure that for your LAUNCHPAD ONLY, choose Track On and Remote on for input, and everything else on for output, again, only for your launchpad.
omg do we have to add a sound file for every button I was thinking about buying a novation launchpad mini but I did not know that you have to do all this man this will be a nightmare to setup I'm rethinking on buying it now
This is so harddddd I can’t figure anything outttttt....I honestly give up

Doesn’t work I have been trying to fix this for like 2 years literally!
what channel do you chose for launchpad X?
Very nice video! It's easy to understand, even for people from other countries ( i'm from germany, excuse my bad english )
Thank You!
Same
@InspirAspir
Same here
Just found out that If you open the settings of your lunchpad by holding down the session button and then press the purple button on the right it'll switch to legacy mode which should work. (it did for me at least) the only downside is that you have to re-enable legacy mode every time you plug it in
This was really useful
This is a fairly old vid but there is still a dearth of LP content, sadly.
That said, if you are following along here, using a Launchpad X in Custom modes, then you may find yourself stuck around 4:02...
Make sure that you select(ed) the proper Out for your Lights track...
There will be at least 2 for the LP...
Ironically, using "Launchpad X Output" is wrong; you want to select "MIDIOUT2 (LPX MIDI).
:)
Bless you stranger
I can't find the output you just said. I can only find one output.
I'm here from 2020. Great Content!!
I needed this! Thanks a lot fam
