  • Aliya Dossa has a story to share. Actually, she shared exactly 101 stories through her project called “101 Days, 101 Strangers, 101 Stories,” where she documented the stories of 101 individuals in as many days. In this TEDx talk, Aliya shares some of the stories she discovered and talks about how the conversations she had with these strangers allowed her to learn more about the dynamics of trust and human interaction. More importantly, she explains how the environment around us, our economic system and institutions that foster competition over collaboration, can leave us feeling isolated and removed from society.
Aliya is a third-year undergraduate student majoring in Economics at UBC.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

But you`re a beautiful young girl.
If I, as a guy, would ask a girl "would you be my stranger of the day?" I would either get arrested, slapped by her or punched by her boyfriend.

hah! no! Well first dont say for theday right; she say few minutes! haha good try! haha! And then it depends how you approach someone, and where and who! right?! Yeaaah! also i guess if you look that someone that was prepared to meet this nice person your talking too (kina clean right; also maybe a little dressed up, not too much, but anough so we feel your are not wishing to begg 25 cents) hii

I'm so happy to live in Dublin. Here most of the locals look at you and say hi when they meet you on the street. It is like the small town I come from in Sardinia (Italy)

Unfortunately - the sad truth is - approaching strangers for the purpose of conversation, is socially unacceptable or awkward at best - especially in my case when they see a middle aged man with zero financial status poorly dressed and dependant on public transportation... Trust me, people do not respond in a manner that would be conducive to meaningful conversation when someone with an unfavorable appearance walks up to them. As a society, we are extremely judgemental, and through our prejudice we form a preconceived idea of a stranger's intentions based on their appearance when approached. As well meaning and heartfelt as this young lady's message may be - for someone in my situation, I do not reccomend it - not only will you face possible rejection, you may also find yourself in a potentially volatile situation. When I'm out in public, I keep my eyes to the ground, and I mind my own business. Believe me, it's much safer that way.

Thanks Aliya! Even after studying pshychologie & human geographie it's still some questions unsolved! I'm also working on that! From Quebec it"s a little easyer as it's a smaller French speaking community (easier to trace plps), and we are not as much from a background where peoples moved from there country (usualy filled with some trauma, lets face it). But partly still the individualism is still so strong that i am usualy putting all but all my energy on living abroad! I know most country are kinda loosing that "exchanging" habits, even villages. But there is still a lot better places, and effort that are more consistant in many places abroad! Thanks again!
