I just got silkie babies a couple days ago and I already lost one yesterday because it was sick. I'm raising them myself. I'm new at raising silkies, but I want to do it. When I first heard about them, I immediately fell in love with them. I wanted them for a couple years now and I finally got them. I'm keeping them as pets and never for process. I'm going to bond with them and protect them from predators. Silkies are officially my number one favorite breed of chickens.
@harmonhomestead7434 I lost another one just the other day, because she was smaller than the other ones. Plus she was sick and we did everything we could to save her. She started getting better, but then it went downhill fast and she died. I was sad to see her die 😢 but the others are doing fine. I had them for a week now and they're already getting bigger, and fluffier.
I have had so many chicken breeds and my silkies are my favorite. They are adorable and have so much personality.❤ And I have noticed that their hardboiled eggs peel so nicely.
I have a question about silkies I am considering getting two or four but the thing is in the summer it gets really hot how do I keep them from overheating in the summertime?
I have a maybe strange question... MY silkies like to dance! I bought some hatching eggs off of ebay. Hatched them, and now that they are grown the roosters will put their wings to the ground and skip on one foot toward me when I call them. Is this something silkies naturally do? I have never seen any of my other chickens do this. I have no experience with silkies other then the ones I have.
I had a gorgeous lavender/slate blue/gray silkie rooster (RIP Peep). The comb was a deep ox blood color and blue earlobes. Was going to breed with him just for fun but maybe he wouldn’t have been a good candidate?
Ox blood coloring should be fine! Anything extremely dark in the burgundy tones or black is perfect for silkies. I bet the lavender feathering is gorgeous!
Are we allowed to bath their feet/legs when funky? My neighbor got on to me for bath their feet and wings (4weeks old had poo with pine chips stuck on them). I want what’s best for them 💕🐥
Yes and no… a 4 toed silkie is not considered pure, but it may have came from a pure stock. Genetic abnormalities happen like 4 toes from a pure stock, but the breeding line needs to end with that chicken because the genetic abnormalities can be passed down to future generations.
i live in an apartment, but am planning to get silkies when we get a house. Ive been researching all i can about them so we know what we're doing when the time comes. thanks ❤
I am a first time owner of silkies and I have fallen in so love with them I just didn't they like to brood mine isn't a year old and she's has had 3 different set of babies.
I hatched my silkie for $2….😅 I was not planning on keeping the chickens I hatched but my son convinced me to keep a silkie. It’s now one of our favorites! She’s the only one laying right now
Hey Harmon,I've been planning on keeping silkies so I've been researching on how many eggs do silkies lay in a clutch? Secondly, are they kept on free range or an enclosure?
As far as laying in a clutch, certain hens will go broody in 3 days if eggs are not gotten daily. I would say anywhere from 10-12, but all of ours lay in the same nest boxes so it’s hard to give an accurate count. Ours always lay in the winter better than the summertime. I would highly recommend a sturdy, hand built pen, but we do free range ours. They know where to go to bed at night and put themselves up. We just close the doors at dark. Hope this helps!

Yes, they are definitely our favorite as well! And keep us going with eggs in the winter.
Do the male silky wake up earlier then regular roosters 🐓? Cuz mine wakes us up around 5:30 to 6
That was wonderful, informative and sweet video. I could listen to your advice all day! haha Thank you for sharing your experience.
You’re welcome and thank you so much!😊
Thanks for sharing. I have a bantam flock.
❤️you’re welcome!

Yes, just dry them off afterwards so they will stay warm. 😊
I had 2 silkie...1 is good grade 5 toes another 1 is normal grade 4 toes..are the normal one still considered pure silkie?

@@harmonhomestead7434 thanks for information

Silkies are our favorite too! Their personalities are so funny! And yes, they go broody quickly.

Silkies are dependable and sooo adorable! We love the breed and have expanded our Silkie flock down through the years. Glad you kept the Silkie 😊

guide same as other chickens, you just might need to cut some hair so they can see (more easely)
