I am doing some Rooster and chicken paintings and think this breed is going in my collection. I did not know this existed until recently! This will be fun to paint! Its crazy cute!!!😊❤
Thankyou for a decent informative video. 😁 There's so many videos that just don't cover the details correctly but you done very well. Well presented and nice birds featured which makes a huge difference relaying the info your describing. Big thumbs up.
I agree. They are so much smarter than given credit for. Every year I would have a flock of barred rock (from 6-9) picked one by one by the local hawk. Not one of these silkies have been taken or killed.
My wife and I recently got our first little flock of chickens. One of them was a white silky that I believe is a rooster. But I’ve looked at pictures of lots and lots of silkies, and if I’m being honest, he looks better than most of them. I wonder if I should get into showing
Showing is a wonderful hobby, you just have to find the right people that keep it fun! You could always take him to a show to see how he does, get feedback from the judges, etc. It’s a lot of fun! My first recommendation would be buying the standard of perfection. There’s also a book on silkies from the ABA that’s a lot cheaper and still has the standard in it. 🙂 I recommend both.
Wow, lots of good information there! I bought eggs from a popular breeder online last March and ended up with 5 roosters and 4 hens. They're all very cute and fun, but I doubt if any of them meet those standards. Two have the satin feathering, one has a crooked beak, one with just 4 toes, etc. I would love to get into breeding and maybe even showing, but I haven't found a lot of information about how to set up breeding pens and whatever else needs to be done. Also, my roosters attack each other and have to be separated, so that's a real pain too - what do you do with all the roosters? No way can I cull them, especially when I've cared for them so long before even knowing their sex. Any advice?
Thank you!! So glad you enjoyed it! 😁 For extra roosters, you can try to rehome locally, or take to a sale barn. If you’re really attached to them, you could make a ‘bachelor’ pen. A bachelor pen is entirely for males, no females should be nearby. Sometimes keeping the females away can stop the fighting. 🙂
Breeding pens don’t have to be fancy. 😁 We just followed the ‘line coop’ format for our birds. To start showing, join the ABA or APA, and search the web for Poultry Show Central. You should be able to find shows in your area there. Networking on FaceBook is a good way to find shows too. 😁
My silkie had mites and lice ! I am new chick owner! He started to crow and his blue earlobes turned white, now after psp and other methods to eradacate , he is finally getting better . People should know how easy for them to get infected ! He was sick also! I got him and his mate at the same time , early fall she not as bad
Great video, I have a question in regards to heating ,I live in Canada and the winter weather can drop to -20 do I need a heating source such as a wall mount heating pad. I have searched the internet but the results vary.
Thank you! ❤️ That’s a tough question. We can get as low as about 4-5 degrees here (Fahrenheit) and I’ve never had a problem with my birds in the cold, but -20 seems a bit much. A heating pad would probably be a better option than a heat lamp. Unfortunately I think the only way to know is to try it, as humidity can vary so much from region to region too. The big thing is making sure they always stay dry. Sorry I don’t have a great answer for this!
these birds are hilarious. I have two older birds a lady was getting out of chickens. they don't forage like my others: they go into the forest and dig deep. they have their own place, have no desire to mix. now this spring a young crow brings a peanut to their coop entrance every day. not sure what'sgoing on. they've started laying last month, one four eggs a week, the other five. which I understand is prfetty good for silkies. I can SEE how people might specialize with these birds: they're different.

I have a 7 month old silkie rooster, and from what I've seen, he's pretty smart and very independent.

Thank you, so glad you enjoyed it! That is so cool! I wish we saw more javas in our area!
In a mixed flock of silkies and regular chickens, can you have one silkie and one regular rooster for 17 birds?

The gray silkie with black crest in your video is considered what color and type of silkie?
They purr and they bonk.

I recently lost my silkie and my flock just isn't the same
I don't need to "show" my birds. They are sooo cute I just want to show them off to friends.😊
