@@connordrysdale5333 He also did a ton of pinch harmonics. Listen to the solo for Great Southern Trendkill, verse riff on By Demons Be Driven, the main riff on Drag the Waters. That's just a few. He was known for the harmonic squeals, but he also used plenty of pinch harmonics, and he made them scream.
Zakk is, for sure, a BIG FAN of Gary Moore, who also had a wicked vibrato Zakk knows how to use feedback and his vibrato as well as pinch/ pick harmonics on top of a bend.
Miracle Man!!!! The SAME song that got me into Zakk. His chorused tone, pinch harmonics and wiiiiide vibrato had me hooked. Not to mention that tasty diminished(I've probably fucked up the labeling here)chord vibrato that punctuates the verse sections where you can hear the harmonics coming out because of how he digs the pick in.
I'd love to see some Zakk Wylde Solos by you bro, like Dreamer, MIracle Man, No More Tears, and the Farewell Ballad!! You got that vibrato down perfect with the wah!
using light string gauges and/or lower tunings helps a lot, too. I'm using 9's in a D Standard tuning and it really freed my left hand from fighting against the strings during wide bends.
Excellent video, thanks! Zakk did a video lesson of that solo. That was the song that introduced Zakk to the world, so I think he really went over the top with it. It's my favorite Zakk solo of all time!
If you look at Zakk's Pentatonic Hardcore video, he explains there that he shakes his wrists in order to get that vibrato. The other secret people forget about is the way he strings his guitars. Instead of simply feeding the strings through the tailpiece and bridge like everyone else, hell feed the string through the tailpiece UPSIDE DOWN, and wrap it around to feed it through the bridge that way. It's a surefire way to scratch up the tailpiece, but that's how he did it.
For me, Zakk's secret no one ever seems to point out, is his aggression and violent pick attack. Choke the hell out of the pick, look for the sweet spot between normal plucked string sound, and pinched harmonic squeal, and attack the strings like you're actually trying to break them with your picking hand. Also, use 2 or 3 fingers behind the note for extra strength, and then vibrato violently, hard enough to pull a floating trem out of tune. Try raking into it, instead of just one string, for extra effect. It's not clean playing, it's violent. I mean absolutely try to murder the strings with your pick attack and vibrato hand. Imagine if your buddy let you play his new guitar, and you are being careful not to damage the guitar or break a string, then do the opposite of that. Play like you're actively trying to destroy the guitar. Lastly, Zakk uses the shorter Gibson scale length, with slightly higher string action, coupled with heavier low strings, and lighter high strings, which gives less resistance, and adds that springiness for even more really wide vibrato.
Do I need active pickups to get a zakk wylde type tone. I'm still on my guitar journey and trying to aquire my 2nd guitar. Any help to aspiring to a similar sound?
Hey Mike ! I’ve commented on Tons of other UA-camrs videos about this maybe you can help ! So I know the Fingertip is usually supposed to touch the string above to mute the string but sometimes I see it not done at all ! How do u know when and when not to ? Thanks
Can you make a video about relative pentatonic scales and explain more about it ? My porblem is i dont know how to play the relative scale on all the shapes if it is possible.
Zakk uses the BB King vibrato technique… You need to take your thumb completely off the guitar to do it. If you watch him do the solo, you can see his thumb under the fretboard… His hand is completely off the neck
Hello Mike, my name is Angel. And I was wondering, if you can help me with the guitar. I'm having trouble with my ring finger in my pinky. And was wondering if you can help me with those problems. Please help I watched UA-cam videos and they don't help
Actually....doing vibrato upwards is never good. It forces you to use your fingers way more. The wrist is supposed to do most of the job and use three fingers as one. You MUST own/control the guitar. Not the other way around.
Vibrato, whatever..... Zack wylde, whatever........ How bout that Beauty of a Guitar your playing.....A CLASSIC Black Les Paul CUSTOM !!!! Sexy......AF !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“Try to use the third string as much as possible”
*cries because the slightest vibrato on my Les Paul’s G string makes it go out of tune*
Just stretch your strings over the pickups and tune them back into tune. Repeat till your strings dont detune
get a string butler
It's gotta be always the g string right?
Sue Gibson.....
You are correct on that. I do indeed do that many times, but it still manages to go out of tune by quarter steps decently often.
guess you could say that's a Wylde vibrato
Lame...
@@dennis8309 well he/she has 167 likes and you 0 so... that makes you the lame
I hate you, but in a good way.
Good one, dad
@@dennis8309 Yes, you are Dennis.
Look at the arms and hands on Zakk!!! He could string a guitar with rebar and still bend two steps.
Not back in the day. He was a skinny chap....wearing chaps. haha
@@TheArtofGuitar and clean shaven!!!
The-Art-of-Guitar It’s so strange to see a younger Zak without beard in the movie “Rockstar”

His real secret - his vibrato is so good because his arms are jacked.
That Zak Wylde vibrato is the reason I started playing guitar
Mine was a fucking Spanish song. But I suppose we all meet somewhere sometime.

1962 hello kitty mini-guitar 😆
I dont know much about Zakk Wylde, but the tone on No More Tears is so perfect- And those harmonics too !
I think his insane vibrato is a result of his majestic Viking/Billy Gibbons beard
Haha... But he was clean shaven those days!!!!!
My calluses got lines in them just from watching that 😮
Zakk Wylde and John Sykes 2 of the best vibratos in rock/metal
In. My. Opinion.
Thanks for the video man
Also marty freidman.
Angus Young
It helps if you're a viking like Zakk. His pinch harmonics are what sets him apart in addition to his vibrato. No one has a PH like Zakk.
@Dustin Hall Upload some vids
Only folks I know that come close is killswitch engage. They dont horse around with Pinch Harmonics at all
Dimebag did them easily too. Man I wish that he would be still here..
Lt. Puff He did harmonic squeals more so than pinch harmonics. Harmonics + Whammy

With lower tunings its a bit Easier to achieve the sound n technique without busting ur fingers at the start.

@@phrygiandominant6989 I was going to comment that very thing, Sykes has had a tremendous and almost unspoken influence over many 80's guys.

True, but over the years Zakk has done plenty of stuff in standard tuning and the vibrato is just the same.
using light string gauges and/or lower tunings helps a lot, too. I'm using 9's in a D Standard tuning and it really freed my left hand from fighting against the strings during wide bends.
John Sykes was way before Zakk. Go check out Whitesnakes 1987 album. Listen to the solos, it’s amazing. John has been forgotten in Rock history
Thanks to Coverdale.

Can you do Andy Summers ? I find his technique very difficult .
To me Zakk's vibrato sounds very similar to Jake's.
I agree listen to the last note on bark at the moon
I would like to see more videos about Zakk Wylde's technics :)
Wow this is a fantastic, in-depth lesson!

Check out Paul Kossoff from the 70s band Free. Legendary vibrato. Hard to do right with control but is really worth working on.
