I was at the Samurai experience in Kyoto just a few days ago and I asked the instructor about this, he said you are born into samurai clans. It’s bloodline. You can’t be a foreigner samurai. He also said there are still samurai bloodline left in Japan today, and Ubisoft trying to make Yasuke a samurai is mockery of their ancestors.
Correct. It was bloodline. You had to be born in certain families to be eligible to become a samurai for a reason of guaranteed security during a hierarchical society. My ancestor was a samurai. His picture, memos, journals, and swords have been passed on through generations in my family.
They’re literally just trying to have their cake and eat it too. The ordeal is literally just this: Ubi: “You’re racist if you complain about Yasuke because we’ve actually done research and met with historians about this!” Everyone: “Well, you’re racist for misrepresenting Japanese culture.” Ubi: “Yeah… well… it’s a fantasy game so it doesn’t matter!” It wasn’t until they released that apology that they started pointing out that this game is also fictional, they’ve literally just been heavily implying that their game is historically accurate in all of the marketing.

In ac3 you participate in the Boston tea party. Did that actually happen? Yes. Did the assassins take part in it? No. However you could still learn about the Boston tea party. The characters also follow the same pattern, such as da Vinci. It is much the same thing with Yasuke in this game. He was a weapon bearer, not a samurai. But making him a samurai in game is not a huge stretch, so they did it. It is BASED on history, but not 100% accurate. That’s how it’s been marketed, that’s how it’s been since ac1. Ubisoft didn’t call anyone racist, only IGN and other idiotic game media.

Japanese, Korean and Chinese are generally, historically adversaries. So when something like this brings them together, you know something is really wrong with the game.
As a Taiwanese, this is indeed correct. It makes East Asian players feel very perplexed. Frankly, I have no problem with the West pursuing political correctness, but it shouldn't be done at the expense of our culture. Perhaps the history between white people and black people makes white people feel indebted to black people, or black people feel that white people owe them, so there is a need for modern-day compensation. But none of this is related to East Asia, right? To be honest, Chinese people were even taken by American whites to build railroads; we should be seen as fellow victims. So, if political correctness is to be pursued, it should remain within the Western cultural sphere.

When a book concerning historical material is written by a associate professor at a law school whose job was mostly teaching English, the readers, publishers, and many other agency should be compelled to investigate whether the writer is qualified to discuss the matter. As a side notes, quite certain the Japanese university (Nihon University, which by all means and purposes was never a top institution to begin with) that he is working at has removed his traces and courses, so that should says a lot about backlashes.

Meanwhile for Japan, they directly insult the Japanese people by claiming they consulted "history experts" before just ripping off of Chinese architecture, using a blatantly falsified historical figure as the main character, and respect the culture of Japan so much that they think Geishas existed in 16th century Japan and used a sacred symbolic religious gate for convention booth decoration. Assassin's Creed pretends to be faithful to the historical settings it portrays and marketed itself as such, but now we see that they tried to have their cake and eat it too. Black people were practically unknown in Japan at the time save for being seen working as slaves under foreign merchants. This is evidenced by Frois's account of several people dying in Kyoto after a fight broke out between people trying to get a glimpse of Yasuke upon his arrival, and how Nobunaga tried to have his skin washed as he believed Yasuke had been dyed with ink.. What Japanese people knew of Africans would've come from those merchants, and if the story of Akechi sparing Yasuke is to be believed (and can be used as a representative), Japanese people saw Africans as lesser beings just as the merchants did. Frois writes that Yasuke didn't speak a word of Japanese, but entertained Nobunaga with a few "tricks" he had learned, while Nobunaga allegedly enjoyed holding one-sided conversations with the man. Yasuke was a "retainer" for 11 months before Nobunaga died at Honnoji, and it's highly unlikely that Yasuke became anything remotely close to a skilled warrior during that time. From what is written, it is likely he was kept at court, as little more than a curiosity to be shown off - a glorified jester, given a title to separate him from the slaves owned by merchants. But samurai, understood as a traditional Japanese warrior, he was not. He was never given a family name, as is otherwise required of samurai.

I like reading history and Ghost of Tsushima gave me a historical insight of what was going on. They recently found Chinese ships used by the Mongols for the invasion of Japan between Korea and Japan. On one find is a grenade outer shell from that time period. Not only that, but the Mongols also try to invade twice and twice the Tsunami devastate the fleet.
Yeah respect! Ghost of Tushima wasnt perfect but atleast they put in a lot of care and efford to mix game and authenticity. As an Asian American male, it's annoying. We (Asian males) always get sidelined or made into asexual side characters in western media. Sure there's plenty of Asian male protagonists in Eastern media and Japanese games. But it's pretty rare for Asian males to be featured in AAA western media where Asian females are already pretty prevalent especially in movies and tv shows. This DEI stuff only seems to be in favor of certain minorities and Asian males aren't minority enough for them. The one time an Asian male protagonist suits the setting, they make up an excuse to have an African character instead when the entire franchise used characters that were native to the setting.

I’m black, and a gamer. I think this is unbelievably stupid of Ubisoft. It’s 100% forced, woke, race baiting, DEI, nonsense. You can’t honestly look at this game and at the very least ask yourself, ‘but.. why’.. It’s just unnecessary and doesn’t fit. Every AC character has conveniently and correctly matched the setting the game took place in. There’s no need for some random, one off, black guy to be the main character in a samurai-era feudal Japan. There’s been millions upon millions of real and genuine Japanese people that they could’ve used. Like I said, this whole thing is off putting because it feels like nothing but forced race pandering.
On their defense, Yasuke was a real story from a man of African origin that served Nobunaga, head of the Oda clan, in the late 1500s around the final phase of the Sengoku period.

Since Ghost of Tsushima was mentioned, fun fact about it, it is the best selling non-Japanese game in Japan. In an interview with the games developer, a Japanese historian even said that the setting felt so authentic he would recommend it to students learning history. That's what happens when a Western developer actually cares about Japan enough to do their research and put some passion into the project.

The reason Ubisoft can't get away with this is that this is the same company who's game was so Autstically accurate (in a good way, for once) in AC Unity that when the Notre Dam burned down, they used in-game references to rebuild it. It was so accurate and true to life that it was a perfect 3D Model to use when rebuilding the Notre Dam. This same company is trying to rewrite Japanese history to fit western political standards, and is fucking up a lot of the historical architecture among other things. Most of the Architecture they're using in the game is Chinese, no Japanese. Yet that company wants to just say it's fans being racist? Nah. Ubisoft is the one being racist.
That's what happens when you let go of the people who cared about the game and history in general in exchange for DEI hires that only care about their identity politics.

The funniest part is that the interview that lauds Shadows for its accuracy isn't the first time a game director has said how the series strives for accuracy and authenticity: similar words are said about Origins in a piece for The Guardian. Heck, a lot of articles racing to their defence have claimed they're accurate. The MOMENT the backlash reached the Japanese parliament they wrote a statement saying "we don't aim for accuracy," like they thought nobody would notice the completely contradictory stuff they were saying weeks prior. As for the academic mentioned, I had a hilarious realisation when looking into Yasuke: Lockley is the source of virtually everything about him online. I'm reading a completely randomly selected article about him, notice the author mentions an academic in the third person, awkwardly explains they ARE that academic.. Jump to the author byline aaand.. it's Lockley again! He's writing an article about himself!

@@ApsmneShsbshu Small problem: that ISN'T the same sentiment they express in those interviews; it's the opposite and that's the whole point. They triumphantly claim accuracy when they want to promote part of the game - as they were doing with Yasuke until recently - and then pull out the "well, it's a work of fiction!" when it suits them, even when it's the exact same part of the game being discussed.
I have never had the opportunity to meet my family in Japan, despite having grown up outside of the country. Yet, i still find the recent actions of Ubisoft to be highly offensive.

The problem isn't the game. It isn't Lockley's book nor the publicity stunt surrounding it either: no one seriously gives a fuck about the historical accuracy of entertainment fantasy. The problem is the academic publication itself, the Wikipedia page edit and the Britannica citing Lockley as source. Yes, but why did they have to do those things? If the main character was ficitonal it would be fucking outrageous and blatantly offensive making him black, so they had to find a way to justify that decision. Notice how ZERO former AC protagonists were based on real people. Yasuke needed to be based on a real person and there needed to be at least some historical justification for his inclusion, or his inclusion would have been completely indefensible. Of course, it still is, but now they can at least argue on the basis of historical evidence rather than actually be honest about why they did what they did.

The point that I was trying to make is that the real issue here is the validity of the academic material the game stems from. The game itself will be forgotten soon enough, but Lockley's publications stood firm and were cited on reputable outlets for a substantial period of time without any serious peer reviewing. That is the main problem with this whole story, and the main reason why it's being brought up in parliament: it can actually cause lasting damage.

I genuinely do not understand why Ubisoft would pick Yasuke, the first time they've ever used a real historical person as a main character too...what other reason did they pick him other than the fact that he's black? Is he known for winning any special battles? Was he a master swordsman? Was he a rebel? Was he highly decorated? Also, in the United States there has been a large increase since 2020 of hate crimes on Asians perpetrated by the black community in cities. So Ubisoft making a game where you’re a black guy killing hundreds of Asians is in exceptionally poor taste.

The opening screen of assassins creed states “inspired by historical characters and events, this work of fiction…” A lot of people don’t seem to understand the term “inspired”. In ac3 you participate in the Boston tea party. Did that actually happen? Yes. Did the assassins take part in it? No. However you could still learn about the Boston tea party. The characters also follow the same pattern, such as da Vinci. It is much the same thing with Yasuke in this game. He was a weapon bearer, not a samurai. But making him a samurai in game is not a huge stretch, so they did it. It is BASED on history, but not 100% accurate. That’s how it’s been marketed, that’s how it’s been since ac1.

But if Ubisoft decided this, we have no choice but to accept it (if we want to play). Japanese developers also create games set in Western countries. So, what are we most upset about? It's the possibility of fiction being accepted as historical fact. This is especially dangerous when large companies with influential video games do it. Even having the female ninja makes no sense. Kunoichi were a thing - they 100% existed, and had a VERY distinct and specific role as shinobi. Male shinobi did most of we would consider "ninja" infiltration. Kunoichi existed more in the roles of modern spies - they became part of their target organization, and were activated when needed. Otherwise, they were handmaidens / courtesans / housewives, et al. They weren't combat fighters, they were embedded intelligence and assassins. Ubisoft has no idea what they're doing here.
Shinobi is a job. Some had training for this kind of job others didn't. They were Spies. Kunoichi is a modern word that did not existed during Nobunaga period.

There is a reason James Clavell fictionalized the names in his novel Shogun. While loosely based on history, it differed enough that the work would have received negative criticism in Japan. Japan takes the representation of their history and culture seriously. I think the tipping point was Lockley's claims and the fact the Japanese text versions in his writings did not match the English text. Which you have pointed out. He thought he could hide his revisionism history from its entire host nation. That is just down right insulting.
Really a shame how long the AC community and fans have waited for a Japanese themed AC game only for it to be this garbage and now we likely won't get another Japan themed game again or for a very long time. I hope modders can find a way to fix this for us fans.
Modders can't fix a game this fucked plot wise and potentially gameplay wise. Ubisoft chose the worst game to drop the ball with. If they had aced it, it would've been up there with the Ezio trilogy. It genuinely felt like an Odyssey. I'm not sure I'll get this kind of feeling from this game because, as you said, Ghost exists. If I want to play as samurai, I'd play that instead of this AC.

What people don’t seem to see is that we aren’t upset about the character being black because of racist ideals (maybe some, but not everyone), rather because of recent events. It's true that Shadows just had the misfortune of being the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of the "historical invasion" angle. It's the most viral and visible retelling of the Yasuke myth yet when people were already frustrated with this black power fantasy being injected into real history. It's not even Ubisoft in particular that people are angry with but the Yasuke story itself.
I made a Twitter thread compliling all the things (so far) Japanese hate about this game: 1. Thomas Lockley faked most of the history regarding Yasuke, even caught citing his own not-yet-published work as source, the edit was made in 2015, but the cited source was published in 2016 2. Not only was the katana displayed in the Paris Expo a One Piece's sword, the other attraction displayed was also from Amazon 3. Despite Western media kept saying the game isn't meant to be historically accurate, tons of articles all "educate" people on the history of Yasuke, to a point the Embassy of Brazil in Japan tweeted a fake history about Yasuke as well, calling him the "legendary samurai" 4. Samurai is a high rank of bushi, so calling this nobody is a samurai is an insult to the title, like calling a random priest a bishop 5. Ubisoft apologized and admitted using the flag of The Sekigahara Teppo-tai without their permission, but said it'll still be in the art book. The Japanese are upset because only Ubisoft Japan apologized, as if they're trying to keep it quiet in the West 6. More stolen images were exposed, including historical images such as Genpoyoka and Todaiji Temple, which led to Japanese believe Ubisoft used AI for a lot of the designs. They even stole and changed historical art piece like Matsutaka-zu (Hawk and Pine Tree) 7. Japanese are furious Western medias are pretending all the outrage from Japan came from white people, especially the petition, which didn't gain attention from the West until it already went viral in Japan. Ironically Asmongold also naiivly believed that narrative in his video 8. The petition went so far, there's a petition started by an American to stop the petition, but it's closed with only 596 supporters 9. A diss track on this game made by a Japanese channel went insanely viral, even inspired Western audiences making English covers 10. Japanese care a lot about historical reenactment, so they're very offended by all the inaccurate details in the background, like the landscapes, buildings, props, and environments, such as square tatami and vertical scrolls (tatami were supposed to be rectangle during that era so it can be used as shield, and scrolls were only vertical in Europe, in Japan they were horizontal) 11. Japanese are shocked and super pissed when they're called racist by Western medias, which seriously escalated this whole drama, because they don't like a bunch of Westerners lecturing them on their own history 12. Ubisoft's UA-cam channel posted a Japanese video for the Japanese, yet the subtitles were Chinese, which sparked an outrage in Japan because it feels like racism towards Asian, the video has been privated 13. The fake history has gotten so out of hand, there are now Japanese textbook including these "fictions" as real history 14. Out-of-touch Japanese medias that can't even read English like Abema still don't understand what the issues Japanese have with the game, and criticized gamers for "not understanding this game is fiction" 15. A Japanese user told me the opening sentence of the introduction article for Assassin's Creed Shadows on Xbox was "You can learn about feudal Japan by playing the game because we made it faithful to the history!” I can't confirm this since I don't know which article it was

I'm white as snow, but I consider Ghost of Tsushima to be one of the best games ever made. I didn't need a diversity white man to represent me, I connected with Jin perfectly, because of what he had to come through to save his homeland. The same way I could connect to Ellie in the Last of Us 1, or The Prince of Persia main character.

I can definitely understand Japanese irritation over this. Ubisoft, clearly, didn't consult Japanese historians in regards to the characters and storyline. Ubisoft marketed the game as historically accurate which it isn't, based the story around a character who isn't Japanese and is a controversial topic within the Japanese zeitgeist. Honestly, as a black man, I find it rather pretentious, that every time a black character is involved in something, they roll out the hip hop. You know, us dark skins, do actually enjoy a wide variety of music and believe it or not, some of us don't even like hip hop or rap. Yes... crazy, I know. When I put myself into the shoes of a Japanese person, and try to understand their perspective, I see this as being the same as Ubisoft creating a "historically accurate" game about African culture but them having the main character being a Japanese guy or a white guy. If that were the case, I think I'd be pretty annoyed too. Ubisoft really screwed up on this one.

While I personally wouldn't be annoyed by an Asian or white protagonist in a game taking place in Africa (I don't think race itself should be a limiting factor to fictional stories) I do think the fabrication of history is a problem. Thomas Lockey almost seems to be intentionally driving a wedge between Asians and blacks. Also, I completely agree about the hip hop = black people BS. I have zero interest in hip hop or rap and am more into electronic music. It's so irritating to be branded as a "hip hop human" it's so annoying. This DEI stuff is only generating more racism.

@@shin-ishikiri-no I think the problem comes in with the tradition. If the game wasn't "samurai" focused, any race should be fair to have as a protagonist. But samurai's are historically mostly Japanese, so it would make sense to have a Japanese protagonist if he was a samurai. The game was obviously targeted towards a western audience that think it may be "cool", and not Japanese who may care for historically accurate. I agree though, a lot of people making fair points, but you can feel a lot of passive racism being fueled by this. Ubisoft is just creating problems.
As someone who just finished Ghost of Tsushima and Iki expansion, I don't think Shadows will come even slightest close to how good it Ghost of Tsushima is.
First time I've ever cried in a game....not just once, but twice. That part where his "nanny", for lack of a better word, takes you through that side quest and then she dies....fuck man, it was like watching my gran die all over again on the screen or something. That was some amazing story telling.

In AC 3, the part where you explore Brazil is not only completely incorrect in terms of culture and setting, but they also hired Portuguese people from Portugal to dub instead of Brazilian voice actors, which is basically hiring British people to dub Americans.

But making him a samurai in game is not a huge stretch, so they did it. It is BASED on history, but not 100% accurate. That’s how it’s been marketed, that’s how it’s been since ac1.

I was at the Samurai experience in Kyoto just a few days ago and I asked the instructor about this, he said you are born into samurai clans. It’s bloodline. You can’t be a foreigner samurai. He also said there are still samurai bloodline left in Japan today, and Ubisoft trying to make Yasuke a samurai is mockery of their ancestors.

Frankly, I have no problem with the West pursuing political correctness, but it shouldn't be done at the expense of our culture. When a book concerning historical material is written by a associate professor at a law school whose job was mostly teaching English, the readers, publishers, and many other agency should be compelled to investigate whether the writer is qualified to discuss the matter.
As a side notes, quite certain the Japanese university (Nihon University, which by all means and purposes was never a top institution to begin with) that he is working at has removed his traces and courses, so that should says a lot about backlashes.

They consulted with people that have actually performed archeological digs in Iraq for Mirage. Meanwhile for Japan, they directly insult the Japanese people by claiming they consulted "history experts" before just ripping off of Chinese architecture, using a blatantly falsified historical figure as the main character, and respect the culture of Japan so much that they think Geishas existed in 16th century Japan and used a sacred symbolic religious gate for convention booth decoration.

This is evidenced by Frois's account of several people dying in Kyoto after a fight broke out between people trying to get a glimpse of Yasuke upon his arrival, and how Nobunaga tried to have his skin washed as he believed Yasuke had been dyed with ink.. What Japanese people knew of Africans would've come from those merchants, and if the story of Akechi sparing Yasuke is to be believed (and can be used as a representative), Japanese people saw Africans as lesser beings just as the merchants did.

But samurai, understood as a traditional Japanese warrior, he was not. He was never given a family name, as is otherwise required of samurai.

I like reading history and Ghost of Tsushima gave me a historical insight of what was going on. They recently found Chinese ships used by the Mongols for the invasion of Japan between Korea and Japan. On one find is a grenade outer shell from that time period. Not only that, but the Mongols also try to invade twice and twice the Tsunami devastate the fleet.
Yeah respect! Ghost of Tushima wasnt perfect but atleast they put in a lot of care and efford to mix game and authenticity. As an Asian American male, it's annoying. We (Asian males) always get sidelined or made into asexual side characters in western media. Sure there's plenty of Asian male protagonists in Eastern media and Japanese games. But it's pretty rare for Asian males to be featured in AAA western media where Asian females are already pretty prevalent especially in movies and tv shows. This DEI stuff only seems to be in favor of certain minorities and Asian males aren't minority enough for them. The one time an Asian male protagonist suits the setting, they make up an excuse to have an African character instead when the entire franchise used characters that were native to the setting.

Since Ghost of Tsushima was mentioned, fun fact about it, it is the best selling non-Japanese game in Japan. In an interview with the games developer, a Japanese historian even said that the setting felt so authentic he would recommend it to students learning history. That's what happens when a Western developer actually cares about Japan enough to do their research and put some passion into the project.

The reason Ubisoft can't get away with this is that this is the same company who's game was so Autstically accurate (in a good way, for once) in AC Unity that when the Notre Dam burned down, they used in-game references to rebuild it. It was so accurate and true to life that it was a perfect 3D Model to use when rebuilding the Notre Dam. This same company is trying to rewrite Japanese history to fit western political standards, and is fucking up a lot of the historical architecture among other things. Most of the Architecture they're using in the game is Chinese, no Japanese. Yet that company wants to just say it's fans being racist? Nah. Ubisoft is the one being racist.

現状奈緒江について誰も注目していないのであえて書くが、彼女は当時存在しなかったもので構成されている。名前のネーミングルール、服装、武器などだ。
ほかにも当時、現代の人々が思い描く忍者は存在しなかった。冷静に考えてほしいが、あのような「私は忍者です」と全身で主張するファッションでどうやって秘密裏に仕事をしようというのか。
３つ目は権利問題。大量に著作権侵害を行っている点である。数が多すぎて例を挙げるのが困難である。誰が怒っているかは関係なく、はっきり言ってこれは犯罪である。

I'm just so grateful that, miraculously, Americans weren't the ones who did this. It was Ubisoft Quebec so Canadians made this garbage, aside from Lockley who wrote that fictional 'African Samurai' book passing as history, he was British.

The funniest part is that the interview that lauds Shadows for its accuracy isn't the first time a game director has said how the series strives for accuracy and authenticity: similar words are said about Origins in a piece for The Guardian. Heck, a lot of articles racing to their defence have claimed they're accurate. The MOMENT the backlash reached the Japanese parliament they wrote a statement saying "we don't aim for accuracy," like they thought nobody would notice the completely contradictory stuff they were saying weeks prior.
As for the academic mentioned, I had a hilarious realisation when looking into Yasuke: Lockley is the source of virtually everything about him online. I'm reading a completely randomly selected article about him, notice the author mentions an academic in the third person, awkwardly explains they ARE that academic.. Jump to the author byline aaand.. it's Lockley again! He's writing an article about himself!
The opening screen of assassins creed states “inspired by historical characters and events, this work of fiction…” A lot of people don’t seem to understand the term “inspired”. In ac3 you participate in the Boston tea party. Did that actually happen? Yes. Did the assassins take part in it? No. However you could still learn about the Boston tea party. The characters also follow the same pattern, such as da Vinci. It is much the same thing with Yasuke in this game. He was a weapon bearer, not a samurai. But making him a samurai in game is not a huge stretch, so they did it. It is BASED on history, but not 100% accurate. That’s how it’s been marketed, that’s how it’s been since ac1.

The problem isn't the game. It isn't Lockley's book nor the publicity stunt surrounding it either: no one seriously gives a fuck about the historical accuracy of entertainment fantasy. The problem is the academic publication itself, the Wikipedia page edit and the Britannica citing Lockley as source. There has been 0 peer review on what he has said regarding Yasuke as a samurai as far as I know.

Yes, but why did they have to do those things? If the main character was ficitonal it would be fucking outrageous and blatantly offensive making him black, so they had to find a way to justify that decision. Notice how ZERO former AC protagonists were based on real people. Yasuke needed to be based on a real person and there needed to be at least some historical justification for his inclusion, or his inclusion would have been completely indefensible. Of course, it still is, but now they can at least argue on the basis of historical evidence rather than actually be honest about why they did what they did.

The point that I was trying to make is that the real issue here is the validity of the academic material the game stems from. The game itself will be forgotten soon enough, but Lockley's publications stood firm and were cited on reputable outlets for a substantial period of time without any serious peer reviewing. That is the main problem with this whole story, and the main reason why it's being brought up in parliament: it can actually cause lasting damage.

I understand that it's an opinion you can have that it's just a game but they literally advertised it as historically accurate.
Even if they say its not accurate, its still damaging how the masses perceive history. Most people get their history from movies, games and shows, not books or documentaries.

I genuinely do not understand why Ubisoft would pick Yasuke, the first time they've ever used a real historical person as a main character too...what other reason did they pick him other than the fact that he's black? Is he known for winning any special battles? Was he a master swordsman? Was he a rebel? Was he highly decorated? Like what other reason did they choose him specifically other than him being a black samurai because that is his only claim to fame. Then we find out he probably wasn't even a samurai, he was maybe just the sword holder.
It's just odd when you think about it like that. This game would have legitimately been the easiest slam dunk for Ubisoft. People have been asking for this game from them for years, their top franchise's game mechanics are all built for this time period but some way some how they still manage to absolutely crap themselves. All they had to do is make it one character guy or girl and make them a ninja Assassin character. It could have been a slam dunk but no, they decide to use Yasuke and they used him in most of their marketing even though there's another character 😂
They just wanted to push their DEI agenda at the expense of the Japanese people.

Before this, Assassin’s Creed has NEVER had an actual person/historical figure as a playable character, they’ve always been inserted into a narrative with historical figures as side characters. Like you said it wouldn’t have been a problem if he was just a character in the game.

The opening screen of assassins creed states “inspired by historical characters and events, this work of fiction…” A lot of people don’t seem to understand the term “inspired”. In ac3 you participate in the Boston tea party. Did that actually happen? Yes. Did the assassins take part in it? No. However you could still learn about the Boston tea party. The characters also follow the same pattern, such as da Vinci. It is much the same thing with Yasuke in this game. He was a weapon bearer, not a samurai. But making him a samurai in game is not a huge stretch, so they did it. It is BASED on history, but not 100% accurate. That’s how it’s been marketed, that’s how it’s been since ac1.

Miyamoto Musashi would be about.....-5 at oldest when the game takes place. He was only 16 when he fought in Sekigahara, which was the battle between Toyotomi and Tokugawa well after Nobunaga was dead. He was born 5 years AFTER the game takes place.

In the West, there has been a massive effort to promote black people as the master race.
Why don't they just have a character creation system in their games like so many others? That would make everyone happy. Have the "default" character be a more historically accurate one, but allow players who really want to change it change it.

As a Japanese person, there is something I want to share with you all. We welcome both "black samurai" and "white samurai." The term "cultural appropriation" is a recent concept in Japan. We feel happy when people outside of Japan enjoy our culture. If anyone calls it "cultural appropriation," it's likely someone outside Japan saying it.
However, this case is different. When it was announced that the protagonist of Assassin's Creed is Yasuke, Japanese fans felt more disappointment than anger. Some might have been upset, asking, "Why make him black?" This reaction is understandable. We were excited that the setting would finally be Japan, only to find out that the protagonist isn't Japanese. But if Ubisoft decided this, we have no choice but to accept it (if we want to play).
Japanese developers also create games set in Western countries. So, we have no intention of complaining about minor inaccuracies (though there seem to be many). As for copyright infringement, it's certainly not good, but we're not focusing on that here.
So, what are we most upset about? It's the possibility of fiction being accepted as historical fact. This is especially dangerous when large companies with influential video games do it. We hope Japanese culture is accurately represented to the world.
By the way, thanks to you, I learned that Ubisoft's development team is predominantly white. I had assumed there were more people of color involved. Looking at the current state of Western entertainment, I wonder what the creators are so afraid of.

Even having the female ninja makes no sense. Kunoichi were a thing - they 100% existed, and had a VERY distinct and specific role as shinobi.
Male shinobi did most of we would consider "ninja" infiltration. Kunoichi existed more in the roles of modern spies - they became part of their target organization, and were activated when needed. Otherwise, they were handmaidens / courtesans / housewives, et al. They weren't combat fighters, they were embedded intelligence and assassins.

There is a reason James Clavell fictionalized the names in his novel Shogun. While loosely based on history, it differed enough that the work would have received negative criticism in Japan. Japan takes the representation of their history and culture seriously. I think the tipping point was Lockley's claims and the fact the Japanese text versions in his writings did not match the English text. Which you have pointed out. He thought he could hide his revisionism history from its entire host nation. That is just down right insulting.
Really a shame how long the AC community and fans have waited for a Japanese themed AC game only for it to be this garbage and now we likely won't get another Japan themed game again or for a very long time. I hope modders can find a way to fix this for us fans.
Modders can't fix a game this fucked plot wise and potentially gameplay wise. Ubisoft chose the worst game to drop the ball with. If they had aced it, it would've been up there with the Ezio trilogy. Now, I'm just glad Ghost of Tsushima is around because that's a real samurai game, not this crap, and this is coming from an AC fan who's played almost all the games.

Ghost really put the bar high so we'll see what AC can do but I don't have much hope, it looks like they've been slacking and honestly since Odyssey I've not seen any real improvements in the AC games.

Even though as an AC game (plot wise) Odyssey wasn't great, I found it fun to play as just a game. It genuinely felt like an Odyssey. I'm not sure I'll get this kind of feeling from this game because, as you said, Ghost exists. If I want to play as samurai, I'd play that instead of this AC.

What people don’t seem to see is that we aren’t upset about the character being black because of racist ideals (maybe some, but not everyone), rather because of recent events. The last few years we’ve seen act after act of black washing characters and woke agendas, and going into this we expected to play as a Japanese male. After the reveal it was just one of those “oh boy here we go again” kind of moments.

Yes exactly. I'd have been irked the same amount if he were white or Latino. This isn't about who the main character is; rather it is just another example of Asian males being pushed aside or being treated second class on Western media.
It's true that Shadows just had the misfortune of being the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of the "historical invasion" angle. It's the most viral and visible retelling of the Yasuke myth yet when people were already frustrated with this black power fantasy being injected into real history. It's not even Ubisoft in particular that people are angry with but the Yasuke story itself.
I made a Twitter thread compliling all the things (so far) Japanese hate about this game:
1. Thomas Lockley faked most of the history regarding Yasuke, even caught citing his own not-yet-published work as source, the edit was made in 2015, but the cited source was published in 2016
2. Not only was the katana displayed in the Paris Expo a One Piece's sword, the other attraction displayed was also from Amazon
3. Despite Western media kept saying the game isn't meant to be historically accurate, tons of articles all "educate" people on the history of Yasuke, to a point the Embassy of Brazil in Japan tweeted a fake history about Yasuke as well, calling him the "legendary samurai"

You're not seeing this from the correct framework. "Diversity" talk is not about diversity at all, even ethnic diversity. It's about black ethno-narcissism. I'm white as snow, but I consider Ghost of Tsushima to be one of the best games ever made. I didn't need a diversity white man to represent me, I connected with Jin perfectly, because of what he had to come through to save his homeland. The same way I could connect to Ellie in the Last of Us 1, or The Prince of Persia main character.

I can definitely understand Japanese irritation over this. Ubisoft, clearly, didn't consult Japanese historians in regards to the characters and storyline. Ubisoft marketed the game as historically accurate which it isn't, based the story around a character who isn't Japanese and is a controversial topic within the Japanese zeitgeist. Honestly, as a black man, I find it rather pretentious, that every time a black character is involved in something, they roll out the hip hop. You know, us dark skins, do actually enjoy a wide variety of music and believe it or not, some of us don't even like hip hop or rap. Yes... crazy, I know. When I put myself into the shoes of a Japanese person, and try to understand their perspective, I see this as being the same as Ubisoft creating a "historically accurate" game about African culture but them having the main character being a Japanese guy or a white guy. If that were the case, I think I'd be pretty annoyed too. Ubisoft really screwed up on this one.

It's the corporate-branded and packaged version of "inclusivity", which is the issue with a lot of major Hollywood studios these days (eg; Disney).
While I personally wouldn't be annoyed by an Asian or white protagonist in a game taking place in Africa (I don't think race itself should be a limiting factor to fictional stories) I do think the fabrication of history is a problem. Thomas Lockey almost seems to be intentionally driving a wedge between Asians and blacks. Also, I completely agree about the hip hop = black people BS. I have zero interest in hip hop or rap and am more into electronic music. It's so irritating to be branded as a "hip hop human" it's so annoying. This DEI stuff is only generating more racism.
Maybe they consulted real Japanese historians, but apparently historical facts didn't support their designs, so they preferred to believe something less true.
@@shin-ishikiri-no I think the problem comes in with the tradition. If the game wasn't "samurai" focused, any race should be fair to have as a protagonist. But samurai's are historically mostly Japanese, so it would make sense to have a Japanese protagonist if he was a samurai. The game was obviously targeted towards a western audience that think it may be "cool", and not Japanese who may care for historically accurate. I agree though, a lot of people making fair points, but you can feel a lot of passive racism being fueled by this. Ubisoft is just creating problems.
As someone who just finished Ghost of Tsushima and Iki expansion, I don't think Shadows will come even slightest close to how good it Ghost of Tsushima is.
First time I've ever cried in a game....not just once, but twice. That part where his "nanny", for lack of a better word, takes you through that side quest and then she dies....fuck man, it was like watching my gran die all over again on the screen or something. That was some amazing story telling.

The opening screen of assassins creed states “inspired by historical characters and events, this work of fiction…” A lot of people don’t seem to understand the term “inspired”. In ac3 you participate in the Boston tea party. Did that actually happen? Yes. Did the assassins take part in it? No. However you could still learn about the Boston tea party. The characters also follow the same pattern, such as da Vinci. It is much the same thing with Yasuke in this game. He was a weapon bearer, not a samurai. But making him a samurai in game is not a huge stretch, so they did it. It is BASED on history, but not 100% accurate. That’s how it’s been marketed, that’s how it’s been since ac1.
