- Ever wonder what happens on a ranch over a course of a week? In this four video series I try and show you the day to day life I live as I work on our families ranch. We have the weather to deal with, cows to be fed and watered, sub zero temperatures to deal with and this year, new born calves to watch over. It’s the season of little sleep and lots of stress as we begin our calving season a little early this year and deal with the problems that arise.
Nice video as I was watching you check that new born calf and she let out a bleat and your head spun around to keep an eye on the mom, I couldn't help but bust out laughing. My wife asked me what was so funny and I told her you were keeping a close eye on the mother of that calf, I've been there more times than I can remember. Only a couple got super protective and only one I had to get a loader and help to bring in but it sure seems fresh in my memory to this day. Bet you'll be glad when that Charolais goes down the road. Ellis had the right idea ha ha. Stay safe and take care thanks for your time
Always look forward to your comments! I’ve never been attacked by a mom yet but seems like you can usually tell which moms you need to watch out for. The moms that I question a bit I’ll try and grab the calf and get into a round feeder or that manure spreader we were using to feed with last year. There’s been one or two cows I didn’t even bother trying to grab the calf just let it go until we branded in the spring. Those moms went down the road pretty quick. For the most part though I feel like I’ve got a pretty good herd of cows. I’m sure it helps that I walk through them multiple times a day. Hope you have a great day!
Good update! Glad the temps were not as bad as you were expecting. Always good to see you boy out there with you. Keep warm. New calves look good!
I enjoy taking him with me more and more as he gets older. We lucked out with the storms some of the temps/wind I was seeing in eastern Wyoming, the Dakotas and those areas were pretty scary. How’s your guys winter been so far? When do you consider it spring time over there?
We've had rain, not like usual. Currently we are expecting a Pineapple express (moisture out of the South Pacific) with heavy winds. Which would be bad as we would have power loss. I can't complain as you guys have all that wrapped in sub zero temps and snow! Keep the family warm and keep the course Bryan!!@@LuthiRanchWY
Thanks Bob! Funny I was just talking to a guy from the Washington coast and he was talking about the Pineapple Express also haha I didn’t know there was a weather pattern called that. Anyway take care and good luck with the storm that’s on its way!
77/48f here this day in sunny🌞 Arizona 🌵. Take care of yourself and each other 😷.
Sounds pretty nice!
You will have to put a heated seat on that side by side 😂
Or send someone else to sit on the seat to warm it up😂😂
Thanks for taking us along on the chores around the farm.
Haha maybe once Ellis gets a little older that can be his job. Go warm the side by side up for me
for sure a Tough situation ....yip those cheeky steers do make a good steak though.... awesome little calves...good job mate
Thanks! All the calves seem to be doing great. I got that rid of that charolais steer the other week and I wasn’t sad to see him go haha.
Good luck calving Bryan
Thank you. I’ll need it!
You are a hard working guy. If it was easy, everyone would do it. You yell at a cow to move it and she runs towards you. Sometimes you just can’t win. Keep up the great videos and take advantage of the warm weather. You guys seem to get it quite a bit worse than us this winter.
Hard working or not too smart haha. It is a great life though. Thanks for the encouragement! It’s been a crazy January for sure the warmest temps I can remember. Good to hear from you. Good luck to you also with everything you guys have going on!
Admire your dedication to your cattle sir.
Thank you! It’s definitely a lot of work at times
Great job
Thank you
Great video Bryan
Thank You!
He's a Cowboy and Farmer
Sometimes a Vet and a Welder
Or you put it all together
Then you can call him Rancher,
Oh Yeah, He has many names.
He works in the snow
same He works under the rain
He works in the the sun
Every day again and again
In Wyoming is where He plays this game
God bless Luthi Ranch,,, Amen...
Thanks for that! Nobody has ever wrote a poem about the channel! We screen shotted it and maybe we will get it printed! Thanks again! God bless you also!
@@LuthiRanchWY Well thank u, my ingles is not very good so you can find some errors in my writing, Im from a ranch in Mexico. So i like to see all the work that you do. Im happy you liked what I wrote, thank you, God bless your family and your ranch.
Your English is great! A lot better than my Spanish haha. Thanks again! Good luck with all of your work on your ranch in Mexico!
Morning!!! 😁
Morning Wayne! You beat Todd to the first comment haha.
@@LuthiRanchWY I saw I was first so I commented before watching. 😂 Funny to watch those calves run around a little when it’s that cold but that sign of healthy babies, good mommas and excellent husbandry. I’ve seen -3° here at Lubbock but your cold is hard for me to understand. We’ve been 60+ this week so it’s really nice.
I didn’t realize it would get that cold in Texas. That’s cold no matter where you’re from. The calves seem to all be doing pretty good. I like watching them run around with their tails in the air. Hope you and your family are doing well!
Have you noticed any elk around your farm lately? Thanks for the video. Looks like the calves are doing good
We haven’t noticed any elk too close to our farm this winter. Our neighbors have mentioned the being around there places but that’s been about it. We’ve had a much milder winter this year compared to last year.
Here in the NW of the uk it’s done nothing but rain for the last 8 months,I’d settle for some cold but I’m not keen on snow.
Funny I was just talking to another guy that lives on the coast of Washington in the NW of the US. They have been fighting rain, flooding and mud also. I told him the same thing I’m going to tell you. I hate mud haha I’d rather deal with the snow and sub zero temps every day than deal with mud for a prolonged period of time. The end of March and first part of April is my least favorite time of year because that’s usually the time all this snow we get starts to melt and everything turns into a muddy mess. Good luck dealing with your weather! I’d love to get to your part of the country one of these years, I hear it’s beautiful. We made it to Ireland and England, London area, about a year ago for a vacation and really enjoyed it over there. Take care!
Don't care what anyone says can't beat that wood heat. Coming in from the cold and that heats you up. No furnace can do that.
It’s definitely hard to beat! It feels great on these cold winter days.
I have noticed you are having mostly heifer calves have always thought that they were smarter than bulls when born and hardier. The storms that are in your videos hit Illinois a day later dumped 24.7 inches some kind of record only 15 below. God I am glad we calve in warm weather except for the mud. Good luck are you still driving truck?
It was crazy the first 6 calves we had were heifers, I wonder what the chances of that are. Sounds like you guys got alot of snow and the cold temps also. Honestly I would rather calve in the snow and cold than in the mud. I hate the mud and feel like you can get a lot more sick calves some years.
The cows and calves all look good. Now that you've had your bale spinner for a little while, how do you like it?
I’ve really liked it so far and have been happy with it. The condition the bale was baled up in really makes a difference. I’ve had a few bales that were baled up a little wet for dry bales and they like to stick together and don’t spin off very well. Then on the other end of the spectrum if they were baled up too dry and really chaffy they almost just fall apart and you have to go back and spread it out with the forks. If you have bales that were put up nice they peel right off and it works great.
Any sign of those hay thieves coming at night? 😆
I haven’t seen any sign of them close to us this winter. We did all that work and put up that fence and haven’t had the chance to test it out yet haha. I know they have been up around the neighbors places though. It’s been a pretty mild winter for us this year for the most part so that probably has something to do with it also.
Good morning! My wife and I drove the Oregon coast in August we would love to come back and drive the Washington coast. Seems like a very nice area and we were surprised by the cool temps in August along the coast. I assume you guys have a similar climate.
Haha every area seems to have their own unique problems. It’s weird for me to think about flooding in the winter haha. Are you in agriculture?
@@LuthiRanchWY if you did get a flood now that would be a nice ice sculpture lol
@@LuthiRanchWY we have a mud problem so yes we all have our challenges, I wouldn’t have it any other way …
Hi my name is Andrew, I'm from is Russia und my lakes you farm
Thanks for the comment! Glad you are watching all the way from Russia! Do you farm over there also?
@@LuthiRanchWY Not as mach as you have, but for your famili. Still, it's better than buying in a store, it's unclear what fattened.
Good for you! I’m sure you get a lot of satisfaction growing and raising your own food.
Yes, thanks you
So u will be mad about .2 of rain n 70+ for highs n 40 for lows still waiting on one cow to calve but I am glad you are enjoy the job of a cow care giver up there
Haha don’t worry we will see temps like that here also about the end of May! You were probably happy for a little rain I bet.
@LuthiRanchWY what was sad I live in wichita falls tx about 75 miles south n we got 3 inches the rain was in big bands n they missed the farm but we r one day closer to that good rain now to get wheat top dressed
I hope those storms hit you and you get the rain you need!
