Never think that life vest is foolish. As a kayaker here in the DC area, we wear ours because even an expert can end up having an accident. Love your vids!!
The one highlight of lockdown is the flow of your videos and getting nearly caught up.... as I’m watching this I get notification of another. Thank you .... of to our boat Percy this week for our own cruising action.
Beautiful day! Tank you for this vid! :) Will say that it's really tough to see so many beautiful trees and shrubs along your canal routes getting swallowed up by that invasive ivy. Awful stuff.
So glad no Ariel was needed for Michael, and that the bridge action was an easy one.....phew! Fantastic output of vlogs Jo, you must be working overtime, but we really appreciate it. Hope your new year was a good one! Take care of yourselves xx
Just like to say I really enjoy your vlogs. You (and the Foxes) have inspired me to hire a narrow boat (complete with stove, solar panels etc) for 6 weeks October November to make my way from my current home down south on the Thames to my roots in Marple and back. If it goes well I will but one. So looking forward to bumbling along in the cold with furry hat and big gloves then retiring into the warm cabin for the night. Cheers
Loved seeing the low angle light while I'm in a warm spot. Also the closing shot was lovely. I feel your pain on the music. We live well within earshot of a local church that has a mechanical carillon type thing. It plays at noon and at 6PM. They have three tunes, that's all this mechanical thing will handle. We asked about buying them more but that's the limit. So yes, I understand why the music got to be a tad annoying. Glad you survived the river.
Hi guys thanks for that, seems a while back now. I've been out on the boat twice last week and all ready for my first proper trips out from the 12th. I've walked and filmed the T&M from lock 1 to Willington and all of the Derwent through Derby so glad to be able to do some proper filming. Take care you three cheers Alan x
Hi Jo & Micheal, beaut journey, nothing like getting the heart racing at 2.30 am lol, glad the river worked out. Hope you got a nice place to stop for lockdown, guess we will know soon. By now I bet your on the move again. That tune is so catchy. Take care kind regards from down under 💗💙🙋♀️🙋♀️
Looking at the icy lock landing I couldn't help but think the pfd might be worth wearing when the water is frigid. Glad the river was uneventful. Nice cruise!
My cat sometimes needs snuggle time, and you video is perfect to have on as he chills. Your calm music and narration means we both enjoy a bit of the afternoon.
Well done with all your safety precautions. It looks so cold, I love the white swans on the canal and would appreciate any close ups of those please Jo. Happy Easter you two from NZ. Windy but fine weather here in Wellington for Easter.
Thanks for that, we miss New Zealand terribly, enjoy the wind! As for the swans you’ll find closeups on various of our Pat videos, though afraid I can’t think of specific ones... they’re much more common in closeup in the summer! M
Just watched Foxes of floats new video and they mention an industrialist named Samuel Oldknow, at the start of the 18th century wanting a bridge built quickly so his boat the Perseverance could be the first to go under. Knowing the name of your boat, is there a connection? I doubt your boat is old enough to be that Perseverance but is it named after the other boat do you know? Inquiring minds want to know!
It’s really hard to say, but somewhat unlikely. Given that she was commissioned for the River Wey she’s most likely named for a steam tug down there, but the “1900” has always baffled us. Unfortunately there’s a lot of historical board named after our Persey! M
Obligatory comment engagement. That same day here in Colorado, we had a high of 6 deg F and a low of -16 deg F . We had to put our chickens in the garage with a heater. I really liked the editing of this one a lot, Jo.
@@MinimalList I am really glad you did. We all have those kinds of experiences and always refreshing to watch others get terrified on the one hand then be blessed with a totally underwhelming next experience.
Seems so strange to see you suffering in the cold and snow while I sit here in a tee shirt.... great vlog! Best wishes from Hilton Head Island. This was a travel day for us...
It was good to follow you down towards my home town of burton. I was moored at shobnall marina im now at mercia marina. You guys are hard core. The amount of locks you get through in a day like you did at Birmingham and cruising in freezing temperatures. I wish i didnt have to be in a marina to be out there with you. One day maybe 😉
Hi guys :) Many years ago, I came through there going north when the Trent really was in flood. That line of canisters across the weir was under water, by a not insignificant degree. The whole of the vista over the weir and across the fields was a swirling mass of water and the waves going over the weir were a couple of feet high. By giving the engine full throttle and keeping maximum concentration I was able to keep the bow pointing directly into the current (across the canal and into the river entrance) and crab imperceptibly slowly sideways and towards the safety of the lock. I was young and stupid. I am now much older... and stupid :)
Not a huge amount... the GoPros we use for timelapse are a few minutes to set up and take down each day (though Jo has to do quite a bit of file transfer as well). Most of the rest is pretty off the cuff, only adding a few minutes here and there, though Jo does have to run about a bit and I often end up having to repeat things for the camera. M
Afraid I don’t remember the specific example on that day, but usually when we talk about a CRT work boat we’ll mention it specifically (they’re usually little industrial tugs, very modern) and when we talk about working boats we usually mean older-style (usually wooden) boats once used for working the canals... these are usually now converted as liveaboards or holiday boats. Very few are still in use in their original purpose, almost all being fuel and coal boats servicing other boaters. M
@@MinimalList Thank you. I had forgotten that it was filmed months ago. It was a steel boat with canvas cover supported by a board running the length of the boat.
Oh brrrr...you poor people its freezing out there...I'm glad its all past now...Micheal looks a bit like a big bull with steam coming out his nose..lol...Sorry...vlogs on the Trent I often find exciting and a bit scary....Glad you did well...Happy Easter!!
Ah, little did you know we were just 5 or so days away from the third lockdown, which now seems like a lifetime ago. Just wondering who walks who, does Jo walk George or George walk Jo? Happy New Year! Take care and stay safe
I bought my boat from a couple that moored in Wychnor. The first bridge I did in the boat was Cow Bridge heading back in the other direction you were travelling.
I can see and accept now that the social distance rule wasn't just arbitrary because when you were standing at the stern talking to the camera the steam coming from your mouths reached at least two feet. I'm not the sharpest tool in the box but that was just obvious. Thanks for that Vlog.
Massive faux pas there. You cannot have FREEZING TEMPERATURES. You can have Freezing Conditions due to Low Temperatures. Sorry but its a bug bear of mine and so many people get it wrong.
I’d maybe let that particular bit of pedantry go... conditions and temperatures are both freezing at or below the temperature required for water to freeze. My early years in chemistry beat into me that freezing is the point at which the liquid - gas phase change occurs and freezing temperatures are any temperatures below that phase shift point. M
Michael was right to be concerned. Going downstream is much more dangerous than coming up there. You would have no chance of not being pulled onto the weir if there was enough flow :-/
Another well.put together vlog.....stay safe......thanks for sharing
Never think that life vest is foolish. As a kayaker here in the DC area, we wear ours because even an expert can end up having an accident. Love your vids!!
great videos and oh I love george.
George appreciates the love! M
Eeee! Crossing over on those icy lock gates looks perilous. Loved the snowing scene at the end.

You can never be to safe. Well done for the prep work. Rather be safe and not need it, then need it and not have it ready.
Yep. Better safe and bored than unsafe and not! M
Never be reluctant to put on your life jacket, especially if the water is wet! It’s a life saver. 🥶
Agreed plus modern life jackets so minimal to wear
Beautiful : )
Thank for letting me ride with you. Stay warm and safe see you again.
Loved the shot at the end of the snow coming down. Very lovely. Good video.
Glad you liked it! M
So glad no Ariel was needed for Michael, and that the bridge action was an easy one.....phew! Fantastic output of vlogs Jo, you must be working overtime, but we really appreciate it. Hope your new year was a good one! Take care of yourselves xx
Really appreciating your efforts to get all these videos online. Happy Easter !
Glad you like them! Nearly done! M
From gravel pit to nature reserve sounds like the right way to go

cold cold cold.
Yep yep yep
good vid on the cut

Not quite back to moving yet, but almost! M
15mm copper pipe covers used to protect from frost and waterproof would stop your mooring ropes from freezing. Available from B and Q
That’ll be the foam pipe lagging, I guess.
They make it in 15 meter lengths that can coil up for storage? M
Looking at the icy lock landing I couldn't help but think the pfd might be worth wearing when the water is frigid. Glad the river was uneventful. Nice cruise!
Yeah, definitely got to watch your footing! M
Happy New Year
Thanks! M
You guys are behind but it's kinda refreshing. Enjoy the hopefully nicer weather currently.
Enjoying it, while trying to catch up! M
This vlog may be New Years Eve, but I wish you both a Happy Easter.
Thank you! You too! M
My cat sometimes needs snuggle time, and you video is perfect to have on as he chills. Your calm music and narration means we both enjoy a bit of the afternoon.
Nice to hear we’re helping a cat get some snuggles in! M
I was amused that you said 'so that people can find my frozen corpse' followed by 'see you on the other side'. Glad that you survived.
Me too! M
Thank you for another beautiful canal in the winter sun. Hope you are in a good spot for Easter. Take care.
Found a good spot with a bit of sun! M

Michael, your mispronunciations are entertaining.
Always glad to get them wrong! M
Corps I.D. is a very valuable piece of evidence at the tribunal......
HOORAH! Well done. It was easier for us watching since we know you survived. Nevertheless, some anxious moments.
I suppose it does make it easier... not sure if Jo’d put up the video if I hadn’t! M
@@MinimalList I am really glad you did. We all have those kinds of experiences and always refreshing to watch others get terrified on the one hand then be blessed with a totally underwhelming next experience.
Great Vid! But I really wanna know was how Christmas Dinner? Was the Lasagne worthy of making it a Christmas tradition?
It absolutely was! M

boating in winter is very strange.
Enjoy the warmth while it lasts! M

Looking forward to arriving in real time! M

Ahh, but at least you survived long enough to admonish your younger self! M
How much more time does videography add to your travels ??? I know shot setup can take a bit ....

Was the Work boat a CRT boat or do people still use canal boats to move gravel or other heavy items?
Afraid I don’t remember the specific example on that day, but usually when we talk about a CRT work boat we’ll mention it specifically (they’re usually little industrial tugs, very modern) and when we talk about working boats we usually mean older-style (usually wooden) boats once used for working the canals... these are usually now converted as liveaboards or holiday boats. @@MinimalList Thank you. I had forgotten that it was filmed months ago. It was a steel boat with canvas cover supported by a board running the length of the boat.
Ahh, yeah that’s a working-style boat, probably early 20th century vintage. M

George pretty much walks whoever he’s leashed to! M
I bought my boat from a couple that moored in Wychnor. The first bridge I did in the boat was Cow Bridge heading back in the other direction you were travelling.
Perhaps investing in a couple 12 outlets on the stern and some motorcycle 12 heating garments to combat the coldp
I’ve thought of it, but every year I decide it wasn’t as bad in retrospect as doing more 12V wiring is! M
I can see and accept now that the social distance rule wasn't just arbitrary because when you were standing at the stern talking to the camera the steam coming from your mouths reached at least two feet. I'm not the sharpest tool in the box but that was just obvious. Thanks for that Vlog.
Not entirely arbitrary, no... there’s actually quite a bit of science regarding how far human beings can blast water droplets! M
Jo aided by George certainly doesn't hang around once she get moving....
No, she really doesn’t! Especially when he’s in full bean! M
👍❤💯

You sured had have a hot toddy for jo when she got back on the boat or a shot of whiskey 🥃 cheers you two 🥃

If I had my choice I’d definitely rather be going the other way! M
Found a pronounciation of Alrewas, it is possibly pronounced (AWL-ri-wəs)
All-ru-as.
Easy - lanother
Local lad, post WW2 I remember Fradley as an aerodrome where they chopped up WW2 planes for the Ally.
