I worked at a hardware store as a teenager in the early 2000's. The store would take trade-in lawn mowers as long as they started up. We gave customers $50 off and would refurbish them to sell as used. One day, a 3-speed SuperRecycler came through the door as a trade-in. I needed a lawn mower and I only bought it because it was a Toro. My parent's had a Toro single stage snow blower that had lasted 12 years at that time. I am glad to say I still have it and it still works today! It's an old 32:1 oil/gas mix model which tells you the age as very early 1990's. Anyway, I used that Toro SuperRecycler a few years until I left the house after college and my parents started using a lawn care service. The SuperRecycler sat in the garage for 7 years, unused. My sister got married and they bought a house, needed to borrow my Toro SuperRecycler. I said if it starts, they can use it. They did and brought it back a month later when they got a riding mower for their large yard. My dad past and I moved back in with my mom. She kept using a lawn service, but they became unreliable. I said I could cut the grass, but we might need to buy a new mower since the Toro had been sitting neglected for so long. I decided to see if the Toro was worth salvaging because I knew it had an aluminum deck, so that should at least be good still. I put in some gas, checked the oil, primed it and it started right up! It needs a blade sharpening, new rear wheels, an air filter and oil change, but I cannot believe it started up after sitting again for 4 years.

I just purchased a new Toro Super Recycler and paid a little extra money for the Honda motor because the Briggs & Stratton motor is now made in China. I just bought the 2019 model yesterday. I'm in Ontario, Canada (on the north shore of Lake Erie) and I got it on sale for $644 +Tax ($727.72 total). I can't wait to mow with it. I've been wanting to buy one for over a year now. I'm glad you didn't have anything horrible to say about it, haha.
I bought the AWD version of this Toro and it is awesome. Took some getting used to with the pace component but I can take that thing up a pretty steep hill with my pinky finger, I love it, great mulcher and a solid cut.
I got a Super Recycler last year to replace my aging Craftsman that kept clogging. I slapped the bagger on and cut my small backyard. I opened the bagger to empty it and it was already empty. That’s when I realized that I hadn’t removed the mulch plug. It just mulched the clippings so finely that I hadn’t noticed them in the yard. Blew my freakin mind...
Love the Super Recyclers. Stumbled upon two 15 yr old 20055 model this spring on Craigslist. Fixed them, used them, then flipped them. Picked up a 2015 20381 model with the Chonda motor for cheap to keep as my personal mower. Great machines.
How do the older first generation Toro Super Recycler compare with the newer ones. I have a 1995 20464 model GS5 5.5 HP. Just curious how much difference there is in the cut.
I own a Toro Model 20092 Super Recycler that I bought in August 2010. Without a doubt its the best mower I've ever owned. I stow my mower in my small garage by folding the handles fully down and then lift the front end of the mower up to stand the whole mower on its end against the wall. The handle attachment arrangement at the mower deck provides a convenient "stop" that rests on the floor when mower is "stood-up". The manual doesn't mention this capability but it works well for me. The oil and gas (what's left after I finish a mow) doesn't spill out and the engine (a Briggs & Stratton) starts on first pull the next time I use the mower. QUESTION: Does your new Toro Supper Recycler have this capability? Looks like those new iso thingees may get in the way.
mfarrell82 he already had a video where he uses the 190cc hrx. He probably won’t do another one on the new one unless he get one for free which I don’t blame him but the hrx has the same quality cut and performance as the toro. He’s just likes the time master for that 30” cut instead of 21” and he’s also a huge toro fanboy as you can see. I personally believe you can’t go wrong either way but if you have a large yard like he does spend the extra $300 and get the time master for that 30” cut or buy a riding lawnmower.
The Toro engine is more durable than the Honda engine. It has steel cylinder liners and bearings on both ends of the crankshaft. The Honda engine does not have steel cylinder liners and has a bearing on one end, and bushing on the other end. So in this case, save your money, and buy the better Toro engine, over the Honda.
@@bubbatime I've never liked Honda small engines personally but it seems that people do. I think so many people put high ethanol gas in their engines, never clean a carb or use a stabilizer and think it's the engines fault.
The wings on the blade stiffener are called clipping excelerators. But the main reason SR's mulch so well are the kickers. The angular black plastic pieces under the deck redirect clippings back down into the blade for a very fine mulch.
I should say first of all....that is beautiful grass!! I have this identical model (21381). I would think a steel deck is heavier than a cast aluminum deck. I wouldn't worry about the deck rusting out as that Toro Engine probably will blow before that happens. My first super recycler had a Briggs-Stratton engine and it had a primer bulb and always started. I bought a new Recycler with the Toro Engine (21381) and it is just over 1 year old. If I stop the mower for 5 minutes, on a slight sidehill with carburetor on low side of slope, it leaks gas through the carburetor/filter and floods and is extremely difficult to start. It also smokes horribly when mowing on a sidehill and sputters. Also - the drive belt slipped off of the pulley a few months ago. When removing the shroud to re-install the belt, the shroud access bolt head wrung off and I had to drill and tap the housing to reattach it. The screws that hold the transmission pulley guard in place are extremely hard to access, cheap self tapping, and they are SQUARE drive. It took me over an hour to reinstall the belt. The drive cable snapped last month and it took 2 weeks to receive the replacement. If I turn the mower off to move something it usually takes 3 or 4 pulls to get it to restart. I am a 30 year journeyman machinist and own a gravely walk behind, 3 motorcycles, a pickup, a jetski and a boat and I service all of them myself. I am very mechanically inclined. Toro is skimping on quality starting with their Toro brand engine and cheap hardware and poor, non-user friendly designs. I asked Tor to buy it back or replace and they said that was up to the dealers policy.... GET A HONDA ENGINE or at a Minimum the BRIGGS!
I used to scour Craigslist twice a day (some years ago) for old Suzuki, Briggs & Stratton and Tecumseh powered Toro mowers for their better quality decks and engines as well as non-EPA throttle and choke or primer-bulb systems. These new "Chinese" engines have low-grade crank seals, nylon engine governor gears and are not built to last more than 500 hours or so. The '88 through '94 Toro engines and transmissions are much more stout with metal gears. I must have bought a dozen or so, to sell for a decent profit of $90 or more (which paid for the whole lot) but you certainly don't have to buy them the way I did... you can just keep an eye out for a working back-up if your new one breaks down again.
Best video every my man lol. It's nice to see someone excited about real life you know? I get excited about cleaning my lawn mower and taking care of things outside

St Augustine grass is known as Buffalo grass in Australia. It's a warm-season grass, mainly grown in the tropics or subtropical areas. However, some cultivars like Sir Walter grow down south.
@@StrikitRich Along with Sir Walter for its drought tolerance and ability to grow just about anywhere, Sapphire, Matilda, Shademaster, Kings Pride to name a few.
@@campbellslee6773 Recognize Sapphire. If it's the same strain I occasionally can get it is supposed to be somewhat drought tolerant. Mostly still see Floritam and Palmetto and sometimes Delmar. Depends on the farm the garden shop purchased from.
@@StrikitRich Yep, Palmetto too. All the Buffalo or St Augustine grasses grow just about anywhere in Australia because of the climate. From the tropics to down south it thrives.
I have a 2013 model 20333 Toro and that year and some prior years had plastic gears on the rear drive wheels that would wear down after a couple of years because the pinion gears that drive them are steel. I solved that by replacing the wheels with ones with metal gears but I had to change the pinion gears as well because of the different gears on the wheels. 2014 Toro went back to using wheels with metal gears. Now I have to remove the wheels to grease the gears occasionally. Happy mowing’😎
I know this is an old video but one more thing, you will notice that the clipping accelerator foils (wings towards the center of the blade) are facing in the opposite direction to the lift/angled up side of the balde. This means they actually create a down force to expel the clippings down into the grasss. So the way the system works is that the grass enters the front of the deck, the kicker/triangular bits at the outside edge of the deck keep forcing the grass into the blade as it circulates until it is cut up very fine, then the grass migrates towards the center of the blade, where it is forced downwards into the grass. So to all the people saying just get the clipping accelerator and put it on another model, the truth is this would force the grass out of the deck quicker actually leading to reduced mulching effectiveness in the absence of kickers. it would however improve the mowers ability to handle longer grass with the chute blocker in.
Definitely enjoy the long videos. Would like to have heard about the wash port and why you didn't use it to help clean the Toro. I know you don't bag clippings, but there are situations in which it is appropriate and would have liked for you to review that feature. Would also be interesting to see its performance on different types of grass (other than different varieties of St. Augustine). Liked that you demonstrated the cut quality at different heights. Would love to have you go through some more maintenance beyond sharpening the blade and cleaning for the Toro Super Recycler as part of a review as well. By the way, I'm 5'3 and appreciate when you analyze equipment with various heights in mind!
Allyn it would be nice to see a review on the different mower blades available in case someone just wants to change the blade rather than getting a different mower. Thanks!
Hey Allyn, I’m curious if you take the wings off from up under the deck holding the blade on the super recycler and put them on the recycler, would the recycler become a super recycler? If it works then guys with the recycler can convert their recyclers on a budget to a super recycler. 🤔🤔
The Super Recycler also has wedge-shaped pieces around the sides that help push clippings into the blade. Shouldn’t be too hard to fabricate something similar.
You mentioned the "wings" on the Super Recycler vs just a mulching blade on the Recycler. But the other important thing under the deck of the SR are the 'blocks' that aid in the cut and recutting of the clippings. I would have also pointed out the cast aluminum deck vs steel...lifespan will be far greater on the aluminum model...nice grass!
I just bought a new Toro super recycler this year. I find that it is a lot faster than my old Toro recycler. I am about 6 foot and enjoy my mow at a very fast walking pace. When using the super recycler I often find it weird to pull backwards. Sometimes I need to push it forward first before I pull it backwards.
I think my Toro super recycler is on his third mowing season now and also always starts first try, The only differences with yours is mine has blade stop which I actually prefer a lot too I like that you could stop the blades grab some thing and continue on without starting and stopping the whole mower.
The aluminum deck would be reason enough to go with the Super Recycler versus the Recycler. My 1986 Lawn-Boy 8480 and middle 1990's John Deere 14SE are aluminum decks and they are as good now as when they were new. Also a bit of trivia, the Lawn-Boy started personal pace.
i bought a slightly used super recycler and love the personal pace drive. for some reason it leaves behind a line of clippings along the left side wheels and you can see the debris being thrown out of the left side of the deck. anyway at 4:57 when you have the deck lifted up my owners manual says to lift it on its side with the air filter facing up to remove the blade! anyway great video and awesome looking lawn!!!
I am in the process of refurbishing a 1998 20030 Toro recycler I picked up from a thrift store. Somebody abused the hell out of it. I'm in Arizona and this things aluminum deck had massive corrosion. I am replacing the rear discharge with a mulch cover plate, spare parts for this thing are hard to find and pricey. So far this thing has cost $77 including paint, mulch plate, new carb, and a replacement cord for the pull starter (snapped on 3rd pull). different metal corrosion caused several of the mulch plate screws to be locked in solid and the heads snapped off, I had to drill them out and re-tap the holes to 5/16 bolts. If you see one in a thrift store or a yard sale with white fuzz on parts of the deck... just walk away.
Bruce Solomon question, I have a husqvarna rear discharge and absolutely hate it. I’m wanting to get a better mower. Is the toro that much better? I have really thick grass and the hus leaves a lot of clumps hate to spend the money on a new mower have the same issues.
Al i had to pause while watching and comment on the truck. Where is the rest of the bed? What’s the point of having a pick up if you have a 4 ft bed. But hey love the videos! Ok back to watching
I would love to see a review of walk behind mowers on hilly lawns with relatively steep inclines. I assume the winners would be all wheel drive but which all wheel drive mower would do the best.
DBAR it’s really great mower pricy but functional. You will enjoy mowing your lawn with model ‘super recycler’. Highly recommended. I thanked my wife when I bought it without objection.
Trying to decide on whether or not to replace the trans on my 19 year old Honda (already changed it once 8-9 years ago). The company I bought the replacement trans from accidentally sent me 2 so I will probably swap it out and get a new mower when the new trans wears out the next time. I'm pretty sure the Honda engine will last forever. That 30 inch cut on the Toro does seem nice.
Yep I've got a mower that my father bought back in 2006 and it still starts up like it's it's first mow ever btw it's got a Brigs and Stratton on it never fails
That super recycler also has those pucks underneath for mulching I believe. I almost bought one but because our Toro dealers are switching because of Home Depot selling Toro I went with the Honda this time, bought the HYA it was 750 because didn't want that thumb throttle. Upgraded from a Toro Recycler.
"proper" routine would be trim/edge then mow but honestly it comes down to personal preference. some lawns look best when following routine but some people don't have the time/motivation to do all of it
I almost never mulch since most of my clients are on a bi weekly (some even on a monthly) plan. Of course the grass gets way too thick and tall to mulch, especially during the spring rush season. But even so, I hate mowers that need that annoying mulch plug and a plastic shute/deflector so you can side discharge. I would probably loose half of those in a month. This is why I love my Honda mower sporting their unique Versamow system. For those not familiar with Versamow it's this lever you have on the mower that allows you to change your preferred mowing style by selecting from mulching to bagging to rear discharge with positioning this lever in a certain position. It's brilliant, super easy and convenient. That's why I use Honda HRX 217, always and forever. Or at least until the government bans the sale of internal combustion power equipment. Hopefully Honda will transfer the Versamow technology to their battery powered mowers too.
Hi-Are you familiar with Corn Gluten pre-emergent? If so, let me know about this question. I appilied the 100% corn gluten application as the pre-emergent back on March 30th, NJ. When do you think I can put down Milo? Thanks!!
I am no Allyn. Corn gluten meal takes a while to release it's nutrition. The action of the corn gluten is to create bacterial and fungal activity at the soil surface and give your germinating weed seeds disorders such as damping off to prevent them growing. I think a small amount of Milo would help this but I have not tried it myself. I use a cheaper seed meal as pre here.
That is all well and good - I paid over $300. for my Toro, but I've tried and tried to get in touch with Toro and no one responds! Why is it so hard to reach them??
I'm curious how you feel about the bigger rear wheels on the recycler vs. the standard rears on the super. I've always thought bigger rear wheels would make the mower more maneuverable. Went with the standard over the super mostly for that reason.
Bought my Recycler in 2007 and is still running strong, had to replace self propel gear and the deck is starting to rot out but will finish this year with it then buy new,
I have toro recycler that is 2o years old. I do like it very much and it is well maintained. I may get a new mower next year. I am looking at the Honda HRX. Reason: I prefer a Briggs, Kohler or even a Honda engine rather than the Chinese made Toro engine.
The reason I went from a 21" deck to the 30" TimeMaster was it cutting my mowing time down. I have the older TimeMaster so adjusting the Personal Pace requires pliers and a wrench. The Sandhills in my lake know they can mooch from me. They'll follow me into the garage.
Allan, do you believe that the 2018 Super Recycler is comparable to the year 2000 Super Recycler? I picked one up (21") from the trash in January and have been using it this spring. I bought an Oregon Gator G3 blade for it. I used to use a Toro Recycler 22" also with an Oregon G3 Gator blade. I can't say I can tell a big difference between the cuts of the 2 mowers. I was excited to use it as it was the first Super Recycler that I have ever owned, albeit 21 years old. I've picked up MANY Toro Recyclers throughout the years, it's not often you come across a Super Recycler with an aluminum deck! PS, the one thing I do realize about the 21 year old Super Recycler is that it does not cut as tall as my newer Recycler mowers. There are less height adjustments on the older Super Recycler overall.
got my super recycler last year and it probably the best mower I've ever had.

The video effects are freaking amazing. Suddenly, I almost don't care about the mower itself any more.
Love how you keep it real, giving your honest opinions, etc. Thanks!
Part of me was waiting for the “Qwerks and Features” of this 2018 Toro Super Recycler. Doug Demuro style.
@enp83 Doug is reviewing houses now so maybe he will throw in a mower review from time to time.
And then I’m going to give it a Doug score
Looking forward to the HRX comparison.
me too. I just used it today to go low on my Zoysia and it cut beautifully
@@TheLawnCareNut are you close to the hrx compare?
I must have bought a dozen or so, to sell for a decent profit of $90 or more (which paid for the whole lot) but you certainly don't have to buy them the way I did... you can just keep an eye out for a working back-up if your new one breaks down again.
congrats on putting the blade on correctly this time lol
ha ha! thanks!

Best video every my man lol. It's nice to see someone excited about real life you know? I get excited about cleaning my lawn mower and taking care of things outside
yep, any excuse to be outside
Thanks for reminding me that I use a heavy brick on handle bars to remove my blade to sharpen it...
we all do it. Do you also jam the 2x4 in to hold the blade still to torque it off like me? LOL
@@adamcosta4610 might need to that I think I ran over one too many tree stumps cutting my Bermuda low yesterday and the blade sounded like it was loose or unbalanced
I skipped to the results. But then I had to skip back some more, then I had to skip back some more, then I had to back up some more, then I had to skip back some more, then I just started from the beginning. I can't skip through your great videos.
St Augustine grass is known as Buffalo grass in Australia. It's a warm-season grass, mainly grown in the tropics or subtropical areas. However, some cultivars like Sir Walter grow down south.
What other cultivars do you have their?
@@campbellslee6773 As LCN lives across the water from Palmetto, he should be championing it even with the ProVista in his backyard.
A deck washing and a lube job in the same video?! What's this video rated?? 🙃
Rated S for Success!
Johnny K I like it 👍
You forgot the side discharge.
Don’t even get started on mulch plugs.
I just bought the Toro SR4, it's Fantastic
Love the use of a wide variety of camera angles. I know that requires a lot effort that only results in a few seconds of edited clips.
bought one today based on your two video reviews
I think the Honda Quadra-Cut blades are awesome. They have the best cut quality. It would be cool to see if they can be installed on a Toro!
It might be worth the $10 for the blade accelerator to see if it would work.
Brian Bowling I agree!!
The Super Recycler also has wedge-shaped pieces around the sides that help push clippings into the blade. Shouldn’t be too hard to fabricate something similar.
Nate Green The three plastic kickers underneath would need to be installed. That would require drilling thru the deck to secure them.
Great review! I have a Honda right now, but considering a Toro for my next mower.
Great review mate ! The cut quality is excellent 👌🏻 your mover reviews are top shelf ✅ ps. Toro - I always mow in shorts !
Just caught the new podcast...kick ass, really enjoyed it.
That wing blade holder on the Super Recycler is called the ACCELERATOR-BLADE!!!!! Just found it in Toro parts.
Gotta use the two bucket system Allyn.
I'm surprised he didn't use a 'Foam-Cannon'.
You should use meguiars “fast finish “ on that red deck after you wash it to make it pop glossy red.😁👍👍
trevor muggeridge scratch that. Meguiars m105 compound followed by m205 and a good wax will make that deck shine like a show car.
Just wanted something simple that wouldn’t take too long for Al that provides gloss and uv protection.👍
Its crazy
Nothing like a freshly cleaned mower!
Excellent video, that mower does a great job mulching and cutting. Thank you 😁
"I must be doing something wrong, it shouldn't be this hard." That's what she said.
Nice lawn allyn. Good vid. Love the music.
i bought a slightly used super recycler and love the personal pace drive. for some reason it leaves behind a line of clippings along the left side wheels and you can see the debris being thrown out of the left side of the deck. anyway at 4:57 when you have the deck lifted up my owners manual says to lift it on its side with the air filter facing up to remove the blade! anyway great video and awesome looking lawn!!!
Thanks for all the tips on your channel! I'm looking forward to dominating this year.
Awesome !
Invest in a vise for sharpening that blade. Better yet, buy a spare blade, $20 at Chepot Depot. Then you can sharpen at your leisure!
That's a really good idea!
That’s cool. It would be much safer and you would do a better job if the blade was held in a vise.
What is your opinion to replace a mower? Love my 2012 AWD Craftsman mower. No issues other then maintenance, still has the original carb.
Bonus clip of sandhill cranes... nice touch.
I still love my Toro. I tried a Husqvarna out last year but returned it. I want a Toro Greensmaster reel mower.
4 foot longer than the bed in my old Hyundai Sonata ha ha. !!
I would love to see a review of walk behind mowers on hilly lawns with relatively steep inclines. I assume the winners would be all wheel drive but which all wheel drive mower would do the best.
Long videos for life! (IMO 20+ is better!!)
thanks bro
I really want a time master but convincing my wife that I need a thousand-dollar push mower is a tough sell. This might just be what I get.
DBAR it’s really great mower pricy but functional. You will enjoy mowing your lawn with model ‘super recycler’. Highly recommended. I thanked my wife when I bought it without objection.
Great review, Al! Always love your reviews and videos. 👌😎👍
Good content; always enjoy watching
That super recycler also has those pucks underneath for mulching I believe. I almost bought one but because our Toro dealers are switching because of Home Depot selling Toro I went with the Honda this time, bought the HYA it was 750 because didn't want that thumb throttle. Upgraded from a Toro Recycler.
Woo HOO put down fert today in Mid Michigan. 72 degrees! (fert life sticker on the side of my John Deere spreader!)
When are you going to compare it to a reel mower?
Great review! If I can help with the HRX comparison, fire off. I have one of each. I will
tell you the Personal Pace on the Toro is unbeatable!
Random question... is it better to trim/edge first then mow or mow then trim/edge? Or does it matter?
I don't appreciate the time stamps, I just want to watch a full video of one of my favorite youtubers. -- lol I'm kidding keep doing what you do!
Very nice machine! It even has a grease port!
awesome how good you take care of your equipment not many people take care of there tools so take a pat on the back
Nice impact and grinder. Got the same stuff exactly. For the most part I like Makita. Little pricey, but no problems for me yet. Nice video. 👍🏻
What were you doing at 5:06?
I’m up north can’t wait to mow !!!!
What a mad man! Spraying the engine with water, washing & hovering a f*cking lawnmower lol 🤣
Just bought one last week. Love it so far.
That is all well and good - I paid over $300. for my Toro, but I've tried and tried to get in touch with Toro and no one responds! Why is it so hard to reach them??
I'm glad I bought a HRX 217. The leisure mow and flexible handles sound good, but I'd rather have my money go to old fashion engineering and quality.
You can't go wrong with the Honda!
Great video! Can't wait to see the review with the hrx.

I'm curious how you feel about the bigger rear wheels on the recycler vs. the standard rears on the super. I've always thought bigger rear wheels would make the mower more maneuverable. Went with the standard over the super mostly for that reason.
Where you get that tool to raise the mower deck up ?
Bought my Recycler in 2007 and is still running strong, had to replace self propel gear and the deck is starting to rot out but will finish this year with it then buy new,
I say it did it’s job great for that many years
Toro should really make you a brand ambassador
I have toro recycler that is 2o years old. I do like it very much and it is well maintained. I may get a new mower next year. I am looking at the Honda HRX. Reason: I prefer a Briggs, Kohler or even a Honda engine rather than the Chinese made Toro engine.
Would that wing blade holder move over to the 22" recycler????
I don’t know if someone has asked before but where did you purchase the little red stand ?
Hi, what do you recommend for a residential lawn mower?
