JB, it was a honor and pleasure to run into you the other day at the Depew post office. I recognized your voice as you spoke to the clerk and then recognized your face. I’m a subscriber to your channel and totally enjoy all the videos. They are to the point and informative and I have learned a lot from them. I have a Toro recycler mower I purchased 2 years ago. It has served me well so far but I wish changing oil would be an easier task.
Thanks for being a cool fan and following along. It was awesome meeting you too, Mike! Always cool running into a fan of the channel! Does your mower have a low dipstick like the older model?
The side discharge is better than the rear discharge. When I picked up my new Toro mower last year, I ended up getting two new chutes from Toro. I have the rear wheel drive and it works great.
I’ve still got my 19 year old Toro recycler. The Tecumseh engine on it is still going strong and the deck doesn’t have a lick of rust on it even though most of the paint under it is gone just from wear. I just brought it to my plot of land in Bear Lake and I recently posted a video of it cutting down the brush. We will be returning there in 2 weeks to finally do our trip I was talking about.
I own three Toro mowers. One is from 1983, it is the blade brake style with three speed rear wheel drive. Number two is a 1989, rear three speed rear wheel drive, no blade brake. My newest is a 1999, front wheel drive, big rear wheels ( 12"). The two older ones have aluminum decks (no rusting 😊). All three have been trouble free, except for wearing out drive wheels. I change oil, and air filter yearly. So, Toro seems to be a quality mower! Why three??? One mower for my back drainage area (rocks). One for my nice lawn and one at my mom's house.
I do love a good Quagmire insert JB....and I do appreciate these comparisons. I too grab off the curb when I see something that could be of use. Nice to know I am not alone in that. Keep sharing your wisdom...keep sharing that humor. It is so very much appreciated on a wet Saturday AM. PS...never registered a mower ever!
@@joebarzo9935 JOE! Gotta keep it real in these videos right? Can’t let a good mower go to waste! Whether for profit or for purpose. Thanks for watching bud! I hardly ever register my newer mowers only because I end up selling them at the end of the season and leave that for the new owner. 👍 you’re in good company!
All I can say is that I still have my 06 Toro recycler personal pace mower, Tecunseh engine, rear wheel drive, and to this day starts on the 1st pull every time. Original deck very minor rust, original carburetor, wheels and cablesI. I did have to replace the RWD transmission last year. Every year the oil is changed, new filter and plug. Blade is sharpened /balanced about 5 or 6 times each growing season . Fuel is always treated with an ethanol fuel treatment. The underside is water port washed after each use and is run 5 minutes or more to dry the underside and stored out of the weather in a shed. You take care of your mower and it will give you years of loyal service.
I’ve been running that same older recycler since it first came out and it still runs great. Best thing I did to it along with replacing a number of other parts is added a fuel filter and shut off valve along with an hour meter/tach. Definitely agree with you JB about that oil fill placement, such a pain in the ass! I’ve tried a number of different blades on this mower but the best one for it I s actually the Toro atomic blade it comes with, who would’ve thought! I did add a big league striper to it and it does a great job, although hard to use the bagger with it. Love the channel, you’ve definitely helped me out with plenty of good advice and tips!
Hello, About a month ago I bought a Toro 22 recycler with a Kohler engine and fwd, for $150 at a estate sale, like new condition, it’s the best lawnmower I have ever owned. I don’t know much about all the details of which engine manufacturer is better, so I’m learning from your UA-cam channel. I really like my lawnmower.
I have an old Lawn Boy muncher I bought at Home Depot (who knows when!); oil changes, new plug and air filter - new wheels 2 years ago and it starts 1st or 2nd pull every year. It's rear wheel drive, which on my sloped lawn is way better than FWD.
So i purchased the toro super recycler 21 inch personal pace two weeks ago. My first super recycler i bought about five years sgo just got too shop worn because i eas mowing 10 lawns a week fir five yesrs ( finally retired from that). The new one is much lighter probably due to the materials they now use? Mows very nicely. The plug fir mulching the grass is very different. Seems to lock in better. So yea had to spend the $800.00 . So far so good. This model is the stow away. I believe also they say no oil change? But when i take mower in for the yearly tune up. Will make sure oil gets changed.
While I like the aggressive look of the newer wheels with their wider, squared-off edges, I find that the rounded edges of the older wheels makes initiating a gradual turn in the lawn much easier. Like going around a big tree ring or a curved landscape bed edge. The kind of turns where you are not lifting the front end off the ground. The rubbery squared-off edge of the new wheels is a bit "grabby" when trying to turn and move the wheel sideways against the grass. I think that's why most mower wheels are still made in a rounded off profile. Years ago, Lawn Boy even featured a wide but very rounded-edge wheel with a special tread pattern and called them "Easy-Turn" wheels! I have replaced all of the front wheels on my newer Recyclers and Super Recyclers with ball bearing rounded-edge wheels from older Super Recyclers. If you don't have to make these kinds of turns in your landscape it probably doesn't matter to you, but I have lots of these. To me, function is more important than looks!
I had a similar one to the older Toro, except it had the Briggs engine and stow ability. Nice mower and cut great, but I hated the drive bale. The front wheel drive sucked on the hill in my yard. Ended up grabbing a new Honda Hrx 217 vka from Home Depot for $699 after watching all your videos.
I use the drain plug on the bottom of the engine on my Toro Super Recycler... I rest the entire mower on top of my large sturdy drain pan. It's a lot cleaner job doing it this way!
Great video as always!! I’ve had the pleasure of using both of these and I completely agree with your assessment. They do seem to lack a little power, but slow and steady will get the job done. Thanks again!!! Go Bills
My Toro is 2 years old started acting funny and I thought maybe it was the coil so started down tearing it down to the flywheel cuz I wanted to check the key you're nut as loose I tighten it back up started right up no problem since it happened thank you for the video
My friend received two chutes for some reason when he registered his 21462 last year. We tried one on my 2015 model 20333 and it worked. I enjoy using it better than my original side chute. We both think the rear works better. I almost always use discharge. I'm retired so mow often so can follow the 1/3 height rule but sometimes the grass is wet. Thanks for your videos and the folks who comment.
Great comparison JB! Pretty nice find too! I’m thinking maybe a light coat of fluid film on the underside would help prevent any future rusting. Definitely like the side discharge better than rear discharge. Mowers today are not built to last. So they can sell you a new one. Really nice content and great editing! Getting some much needed rain! Was great seeing you again! Cheers buddy!

Hey JB great video and great information as always! How does someone find out what kind of power equipment you might have for sale after you fix a piece you find?
Great video, I have a content idea…I have a 1995 toro super recycler and a 2012 Honda hrx, once fall come I only use my toro recycler because of how efficiently it mulches leaves(chops them up so fine you can not even see them). My Honda even with two blade barely chops them up, sometimes leaves are still whole after running them over. Maybe you could do a video about why this happens and what the benefits are of mulching leaves instead of raking, just a thought…and by the way, the toro starts first pull even after a long winter.

Great video. For a hobby repair guy, i disagree on cleaning carburetors. Only because I happen to enjoy doing it. It sometimes takes 3 or 4 tries on the bad ones, but once clean and tuned correctly, they just seem to work better with the host engine. But all this effort only makes sense if you ha e the time to take, of course.
Agreed JB! I think that's the part I actually like though - finding that last tiny blockage in a jet or passage... It can be pretty gratifying to make something run well again.
Hi JB. Great video as usual. Can you please do a review or your opinions on the Honda HRC 216 Commercial mower. I know they’re expensive and no longer produced , but I would still love to see your thoughts on this mower. Thanks so much and keep up the great work.
I have a Toro recycler that also is a personal pace machine. I was wondering, how easy it is to remove and replace the drag flap that it came with? It is not very old and it is already in pretty sorry shape.
I had an old recycler hand me down. The orange for the float bowl broke. Went looking for a seal kit, it was like 9 bucks. Whole new carb was around 12 bucks. Guess which one I got lol.
I can live without a side discharge. Mine just gathers crass clippings and you need to clean it out every mow. Thats where my deck started rusting. Many years ago i hit something with my side discharge and broke the plastic. The door wouldnt stay closed when mowing. I permanently closed with self tapping screws. Fast forward years and the deck was rusting out from that area. I couldnt clean it out and honestly i wouldnt have anyway. I replaced the deck and fixed the door and i just lift it up and clear any clippings after each mow.
Hi! New viewer here! I am looking for a nice push mower for my new lawn. Should I look for an older toro recycler on Facebook? Like a late 90s or early 2000s? Should I buy new? Honda? Help lol
@@matthewrozumialski8196 hey Matthew if you’re good with repairing things go with those older toro. If not so much I would look at the Honda! Welcome to the tribe my friend!
@@GarageGear I have always love toros. I use to have a bigger yard and had a zero turn. But now a much smaller yard and want to find a nice push mower.
Update: ((optional add on) Toro part number 144-6377 traction assist handle kit) does fit all new Toro mowers that have the new baby carriage curved shape. IMO you could make your own Toro's BTAH (Black Traction Assist Handle) from 2 pieces of wood in ((L) shape) and some bolts and washers. Toro's BTAH converts Toro's PPM (Personal Pace Mowers) (which requires a person to push Toro's heavy mower forward before the self-propelled drive kicks in) to ((easily without effort) controlling Toro's self-propelled drive with just your fingers and hands without moving forward). This is needed on steep hills where you need the Toro mower to pull you and this powerful mower up the hill without any effort on your part. The powerful Toro mower can do this only with BTAH and not by Toro's PPM (extra exercise mode). Without BTAH you end up pushing this heavy Toro mower up the hill. Thank you for your help and understanding on this Toro (back breaking) mower issue.
I have had the newer Toro for a few seasons. I use it to mow my half acre lot, and so far, it has not had any problems. Do I expect it to last forever, nope. I actually bought it because it did not have the personal pace stuff. I prefer the grab lever. Is the vortex a gimmick, probably, but it played no role in my purchase decision.
I just purchased a 163 Super Recycler and am having an issue with the mulching function. When using the mulching function, a bulk of the clippings, leaves, etc... exit near the right front wheel rendering the function almost useless. I am not trying to cut too much grass and the leaves are not too thick. Any thoughts?
The wheel drive design has changed from the older style with the clutched gears. If the General Transmission design is like the one shown in this (attached) video, you can see how it would require the mower to move forward a bit in order for the 2 black cogged gear wheels to disengage, allowing free backward movement. This sucks for using the mower in tight areas where some quick forward & back mower motions are required to get a small area of grass cut. It also would require letting off the PP handle and letting the mower roll a bit before attempting to turn. In my thick lawn the mower doesn't roll much when I let off the handle so when I pivot the mower 180 degrees and try to start the next pass I often have to deal with the &*#%ing lockup issue again. I have tried adding a spring to the transmission to remove any belt tension when letting go of the handle but it does not cure the issue. Looking at the video I am convinced that it has to be a technique thing which is going to be hard for me to get used to after using the older style PP transmission that worked almost 100% flawlessly for me for the past 12 years! ua-cam.com/video/McgXgUAgIsE/v-deo.html
Great comparison, Toro goes to fast, It drags you across the lawn. I slow mine down by pushing down on the handle which makes the front wheels spin more without getting enough traction. Which works fairly good but will probably wear front wheels out faster.

I actually just picked up one of those older toros with the Kohler engine free in my town in real good shape. Needs a new auto choke thing already ordered and I think the carburetor needs cleaned. I have a like/hate relationship with the Kohler engines these have. Easy and quiet but they have a fair share of issues as well. Eventually I might swap a older honda engine onto it if the Kohler doesn't last.
Not too much of a difference through the years between these 2. Same basic performance as well. I'll give the old one the win because the price was right 😉.
@@GarageGear I got my first Toro Recycler today, I've been rocking the Craftsman M230 for 4 years which my purchased of FB marketplace for $150 and the thing was brand new, the guy I purchased it from delivered it in it's original box on open. @@Kevin_Hansen hey Kevin! It’s not that I’m not a fan of husqvarna mowers I just don’t see many of them in my area. They stopped making them a few years ago and I just don’t see them pop up all that much. I should try to find one to review. Appreciate you being a cool fan of the channel my friend!

Don’t get me wrong Ken! I don’t mind cleaning carbs too. But these are probably the only engines I say they about. They get pretty finicky!
Agreed JB! I think that's the part I actually like though - finding that last tiny blockage in a jet or passage...
It can be pretty gratifying to make something run well again.

I have a Toro recycler that also is a personal pace machine. I was wondering, how easy it is to remove and replace the drag flap that it came with? It is not very old and it is already in pretty sorry shape.
Drag flaps on these are usually easy to pop out. Can bend them and pop in
I had an old recycler hand me down. The orange for the float bowl broke. Went looking for a seal kit, it was like 9 bucks. Whole new carb was around 12 bucks. Guess which one I got lol.
@@BenNawrath I already know lol! Swapping these is cheap and easy! Have an awesome weekend Ben!

I think you covered this but do you think the old super recylcer is better than the new one? 2019 and older?
@@Clearanceman2 the older ones are definitely better. The fur the back you go the better they get pretty much 👍
@@GarageGear Thanks!

Will Honda wheels last longer, do they have bearings?
@@guitarandotherthings6090 Honda hrx wheels have a rubber tread and ball bearings

Thanks for sharing your input. Good for the community. Enjoy the mow this season!
I have a 10-12 year old Toro it is build well - the new ones seem to be cheapened and have plastic toy mower feel to them.
Couldn’t agree more!
love the side by side comparison.....all in all....i'd rather have the older one. Vortex is a gimmick
@@davebruins8623 Rock On Dave! If there is any data on that vortex I would like to see it. What’s toro got to hide?
I just purchased a 163 Super Recycler and am having an issue with the mulching function. When using the mulching function, a bulk of the clippings, leaves, etc... exit near the right front wheel rendering the function almost useless. The Lawn Mower Sharpener Tool link doesn't work?
Thanks for letting me know . Here’s a new link amzn.to/3VT9oHS
@@mellowjammer thanks for sharing
@@GarageGear sorry, meant to respond in the toro backup problem video!
Great comparison, Toro goes to fast, It drags you across the lawn. I slow mine down by pushing down on the handle which makes the front wheels spin more without getting enough traction. Which works fairly good but will probably wear front wheels out faster.
Thanks for the positive feedback. Yeah, it’s an odd problem to have on this mower.
