I take very good care of my hair to provement breakages. My hair has grown a lot since I have been taking good care of my hair, since locked down. Thank you so much for your help and advice.

    my high porosity hair is KILLING me. but I'm following your advice and so far my hair feels better. it retains more moisture now and is shiny. also the real protein is really helping. also I started using rice brain oil. miracle worker. my hair loves it. I'm 5 and half weeks into this new journey. so far so good. but we will see. I can't say my hair has a lot of breakage per say. its just dry as hell. all is getting better but it takes time. also my scalp was dry and once I started paying more attention to that everything else got better I use a evening primerose mix with other oils and my scalp is no longer itching and dry. so I'm hopeful

      DAB NAILZ my hair is HIPO too! The longest it will stay moisturized is 1.5 day...LCO is the best method....LOC let's the moisture escape too fast and it feels like product sitting on top of my strands.........LCO=HIPO

      zoia carr yes I do lco now. Also what has helped me tremendously is I wash my hair now..I don't cowash anymore. Use straight up shampoo. I feel like our hair get clogged easily and the only way it performs is by using shampoo. My hair stays moisturized all week now because of the rice bran oil. Its everything!

    This was so timely and definitely needed. I'm working with 3 different heads of hair in my house. Sounds like I'm on the right track for the one that's hi porosity. I have seen major improvement in the hair as well. Still working on sealing in moisture. The acidic spritz appears to make the biggest difference as well as choosing a very gentle shampoo bar for cleansing. Thanks so much!

    Can high porosity hair be combated by shaving it all off and starting again? So I mean if i grow my hair from being bald will it ALWAYS be high porosity? Or will the new strands take on new characteristics?

    Great video! My crown area tends to be drier, coarse hair strands, and rough bumps when I slide a single strand from my crown area between my fingers. I clicked on this video to see if maybe my crown area is high in porosity while the rest of my hair is medium porosity. But the characteristics did not match with my crown area. I would like my crown area to be manageable like the rest of my hair but I am unsure of how to do so.

    Thank you for your video. My question concerns high porosity. If you are someone who used to get relaxers and then grew your hair out and went natural, why wouldn’t the new hair be healthier and low in porosity? I don’t understand how this is a permanent condition. Does the new hair come out of your scalp already damaged?

      It’s not necessarily about ‘results’ it’s more about getting to KNOW your hair by taking care of it for an extended period of time. Be patient and give yourself some time. After getting to know your hair, you will know what porosity you are.

      You sound low po. I am the opposite.
      My hair gets fully saturated when wet, absorbs most products well, has sheen, sometimes very shiny regardless if I use products or not.
      It can get extremely dry like straw after a while but it's pretty durable and not prone to heat damage nor breakage.
      I read deep conditioning with heat at least once a week helps for low po.

      Charlisa Duncan I use it and I love it. You can make an aloe Vera gel out of the leaf and use it as a pre poo or in a diy curling creme. You can also use Aloe Juice as part of a leave in and/or detangler. It’s extremely versatile especially for the cost. I’m high porosity and I’m contemplating buying an aloe plant it’s just that serious

      High porosity works better with medium to lightweight texture creams and leave-ins.. Butters are not the best option because it will cause build up faster. I have fine/medium strand, low density, medium to high porosity hair. When I use products that have shea butter in the first five ingredients, it's greasy and flat. I only use oils to scrunch out the crunch when I use gel and when I do scalp massages. Hope this helps.

These tips you provided were excellent and affirmed what I've been doing, with some needed reminders as well. My hair is finally thriving (at 6 years natural) after a consistent moisture regimen, quarterly protein treatments, scalp massages, always sealing, DC'ing for LESS time, no blow drying, and keeping it stretched. Great job! Thank you so much :-)

    My hair is coarse, dense, high porosity and my mother's hair is fine, dense, color treated low porosity so I've had to learn to care for both. My hair loves aloe vera juice and gel, I use it in my final rinse hair tea blend and as the L in my midweek LOC routine. I don't like heavy greasy residue in my hair, even though it is very absorbent and sucks down product so I apply products with a very light hand, building up the layers until I reach optimal coverage. I wash my hair every week to 10 days to insure a thorough moisture infusion regularly and I DC with every wash. I wear twists most of the time because they help my hair retain moisture longer, I can re-moisturize without restyling and style transitions are very simple.

    Can you do a video on why the back of someone's hair is kinkier and grows slower than the front?

    • @GreenBeauty
      @GreenBeauty  7 років тому +99

      MekaSharee that's a good idea. It due to the follicles. Follicles and hair strands in the back tend to get more nutrients and sebum coverage/protection then the hair in the front. Mainly due to gravity. It's an interesting topic so I'll do a video on it. Thanks for the great idea 😀

    • @MekaSharee
      @MekaSharee 7 років тому +46

      Green Beauty Channel ™ so it would grow slower because it gets MORE nutrients? I'm confused 😩 all i know is for as long as i can remember the back of my hair has always been shorter than the front. The front will grow so long that i have to cut it to make it even with the back and the texture is more manageable.

      MekaSharee I have the same problem except the "trouble area" is the middle of the back of my head ... below the crown and above the nap... I kinda figured it was because the area there is the kinkiest...

    • @MekaSharee
      @MekaSharee 7 років тому +7

      Cyu Hen if i part my hair starting from directly behind my ear all the way straight across to the other side, that's the area. So it's kinda like my hair grows in a natural bob 😕 i hate it plus the back is kinkier and shrinks up more than the front too.

    Been a HYPO forever but whenever I go to the salon for a cut they always say my hair is medium and I'm NOPE...been dealing with this my whole life it's HYPO.
    I use the tension method to stretch my hair for the initial styling then use bands during the week to maintain the stretch. One thing with HYPO hair is that ours shrinks like no other during humid days because it soaks up all that moisture in the air.
    No matter what you try if you have HYPO hair you will either have to put it in a puff or allow it to shrink but it won't stay stretched if the humidity is above 60% 😒

    Okay, I am a bit confused. I want to try the rice water but as I was going through the comments I learned that High Porosity hair work best with that.
    My Hair:
    4C
    Tangles Easily
    Breaks easily wet or dry
    I have to work the shampoo and conditioner in it otherwise it will sit on my hair
    My hair air drys quickly leaving a bit of dampness
    My hair hold heat when it get flat ironed or blow dryed
    I do not dye my hair
    My hair is very thick but im told when it's flat-ironed you can see it's a bit fine.
    In order for me to keep my hair moisturized i have to oil it with JBCO for it to seap in and even then after a day or two it feels dry again
    I was watching this video to determine if it would be okay to use rice water once a month or two times a month.
    Thanks!

    Hey Gb. You mentioned rice water patches....but Is rice water a hydrolyzed protein treatment? I studied that it's not so please let me know your findings.

    • @GreenBeauty
      @GreenBeauty  7 років тому +29

      NappyFu TV hey NappyFu good question rice water has a good amount of protein (an average of 16%) so in a way it is a Hydrolyzed protein b/c it diluted in water making it easier to penetrate your hair.

    • @GreenBeauty
      @GreenBeauty  7 років тому +19

      NappyFu TV but overall penetration of anything is also determined by how porous your hair is.

    • @NappyFu
      @NappyFu 7 років тому +12

      Thanks for answering GB. Hmmmm ok so are you saying a protein when diluted in water can become hydrolyzed? Such as egg or greek yogurt?

    • @GreenBeauty
      @GreenBeauty  7 років тому +64

      Okay ... I'll try to explain this without getting too sciencey 🤓. All 'Hydrolyze' means is to break down a molecule's bonds into its separate atoms in a process that has something to do with water (hence the prefix "hydro"). There are different levels of "hydrolysis" from weak to strong. An example of a weaker 'hydrolysis' is when you mix salt and water. The water breaks down (or hydrolyzes) the salts bonds (the stuff holding the atoms together). The breakdown of the salt's structure is why salt gains "dissolves" in water. Here's a link to a visual to help you understand what I'm talking about - thumbs.dreamstime.com/z/salt-crystal-vector-illustration-chemical-reaction-water-35617474.jpg. As you can see, the salt didn't really disappear, it's just broken-down into smaller pieces. This is the same thing that happens with rice water. The water breaks down not just the proteins but, other nutrient molecule in the rice, which is then transferred into the water. It's easier to do this with rice b/c rice is very porous and its bonds are on the weaker end. Every protein (eggs, meat etc.) have different bond strengths so, some require more energy to break down (or hydrolyze). But, imma stop here b/c its gonna get way too sciencey.

    I love your videos... but can I make a tiny suggestion? I have high porosity 4C hair. And I watched the low porosity video and noticed that (because you are low porosity) you basically had 2x as many tips for that hair type. I understand that's because you've lived it! I was kind of hoping that if you end up doing specific videos for other hair types, you could ask your subscribers/fans with that hair type for specific questions of the kind that are addressed in the low porosity video.
    So e.g. you address coconut oil and low porosity hair. But I also struggled with coconut oil as a high porosity, because it turns out it doesn't seal enough! Also, I, like a lot of high porosities, have had trouble with butters because they were drying my hair out. I realized that I wasn't layering enough product underneath. Also, glycerin and high porosity hair!
    And another example, you recommend water only washing but I just don't think water only washing would work for a high porosity because of the roughness of the cuticle and the potential for tangling. In reality your hair will be long broken off before you ever reach full coverage.
    I know I am slightly jealous because I wish there was a science based high porosity blogger who was as good as you are who I could follow!
    Love your videos!

    What if you have both? I thought i had low porosity hair but i watched this and i also have high porosity hair. The kicker is that my natural hair (roots) is low and the color treated parts of the hair (70 % of my hair) is high! The breakage is horrible and has thinned my end so bad. But my roots are extremely thick and have water beads after wash and take a long time to dry. How do I find the balance to treat both? HEEELLLPPPP

      Heart of Africa I'm not sure if most of us are low in Porosity... it definitely seems like it. But us Blacks/Africans have the most diverse gene pool then any other race on earth 🌏 so it's almost impossible to determine if "most" of use have a certain feature or characteristics.

    • @bestofbothworlds4736
      @bestofbothworlds4736 5 років тому

      Though there are variations, a lot have kinky coarse hair, not fine medium hair. So yes, it would make sense that most would be low po since they have more cuticle layers than fine hair.
      I'm confused on why many think they are high po when they have expressed a problem with conditioners sitting on their hair and not penetrating enough to help retain moisture.
      That is not a high porosity characteristic.

    Thank you Sis *GreenBeauty* for this Valuable Information!!!! I had a hair stylist that had perming my hair since the 1980's never had any problems with her until 2017. She applied the perm not only on my new growth but also on my old permed hair!! Then 2018 my bad judgement call I went back to her for just the touch up and she did it again..put the perm on my new growth and old hair...causing breakage and shedding at a all time high!!! SMH! I have now High Porosity Hair! I will not EVER allow her to put hair hands back in my hair again!! I am transitioning into Natural Hair now. I haven't had any perm in my hair since June 2018. This is was a Great Wake up call for me to leave the chemicals alone and take care and continue to grow my own hair as I have been minus the chemical perm touch up! Thank you again Sis!!! :-)

    Another thing is I found that my hair actually HATES putting product in it. I can literally put a index finger in the moisturizer and tap the surface and that enough for a twist, my products last about a year because my hair HATES product being piled on.
    I figured out that for HYPO hair the best solution is a solid wash day routine and conditioning routine. I don't even use oils unless it's during deep treatment because they just make my hair greasy. I find putting too much on my hair actually presents it from holding the twist out style. Also, keeping the hair cut in a shape is great for maintaining the style.

    I think I have high porosity hair. One of the characteristics I relate to is the easy breakage (no matter how moist my hair is) and the easy dryness. Yet, still I don't think I respond very well to protein. When I apply a protein treatment my hair feels harder, almost like thin wire and breaks easily. I concluded that I may be 'Protein sensitive' So I am not sure of what to do at this point. Any recommendations or product suggestions?

      deeblaq+ it depends on where in the ingredient list the Hydrolyzed protein is. If it's one of the first three then I would say it potent enough. If not, then the amount is pretty insignificant.

    I have thick strands of (coarse) medium/high density high porosity hair that tangles easily and dries quickly. My hair has no natural shine to it loves heavy products and oils/butters and if it is humid outside my hair will shrink up if stretched or revert if it’s been straightened. My hair loves aloe vera in products but not straight up juice. My hair really likes olaplex and protein treatments in moderation.
