Dogs are creatures who naturally live in dens. By placing warm blankets over the crate you create a dark warm safe environment that is natural for them
My girlfriend has her 2 Dobermans crate trained. It’s a full size kennel crate that they also sleep in and although it’s fully covered with only large vent holes she covers the top and part of the door with a blanket they sleep like babies. And I believe it’s because of what you mentioned. They feel safe and comfortable in it.

@@KjtuionoI cover the crate too. But I have the part that faces the wall completely opened. Otherwise my dog would never sleep because she’d be distracted by everything.

What you're taking this is obviously wolf myths, but wolves don't live in dens except for the mothers and their litters when they have one.
Otherwise, they just sleep in groups on the ground under cover like trees or bushes, that's all.

Plus I've found it's just really good for them when they have siblings to have their own space, their own zone where they can relax
Crate training is essential. My dog viewed it as his refuge, rather than punishment.
My dogs love their kennel and go in all the time to chill without being locked in.

Yes, many forget that Dogs benefit from this alot, its a place to chill and relax, almost like their comfort area. I've seen dogs go to their crates when they are being bothered by another dog or animal, idk why many think its some how harm thems(as long as the crate is a suitable size for the dog and they get outside time)

exactly, gives them a place to go to get away from other pets, kids, you whatever. I also attach big chew bones into it with a wire thing I made so my shepherd can have big gross meaty bones to chew without taking them outside and bringing ants in or getting crap all over the couch bringing it all over the place

Crates like a collar and leash is a great training tool. As my dogs grew up after training ( as this person is explaining) it was " their" safe space. Their den. Doors were no longer even on thr crate.
Dogs don't live in dens, wolves neither. Let's not misuse that word.
It's not because something is not natural for them that it's not useful.
Collars and leashes are obviously not natural and you wont see wolves wearing any. It's still useful.
When I got my three German shepherds, we already had three much smaller dogs that were quite older than the puppies.
Luckily, somehow the older ones taught all three of the youngsters how to go outside to do business. I honestly do not recall a single puddle, nugget, or incident in the house or in their crate. I guess for the basics you can rely on the older puppies. Now they could only teach them to quit barking at the damn squirrels .
You got lucky, that's about it. You cannot expect a dog to train your dog, that is your job & responsibility. If you neglect to do so, you'll have problems in the future. ^^'

@@aliceblack3533 no, what it is is actually pack and female leader mentality. After it happened, I kind of looked it up. The two female, smaller dogs cleaned up after the little dogs when they did have an accident. And they showed them how things work, because that’s how Pac mentality functions. I’m not relying on anything, I was just sharing a little bitty cool story.
And did I mention I did not rely on any training. My dogs have got more training, that has given me more of a bill, then most peoples tractors cost. Look up the cost of a John Deere tractor. My dogs are well taken care of don’t you worry you’re pretty little head about that .
My GSD loves her crate. Comes to me whining if the door is closed for whatever reason and she can’t get in. That’s her safe space, and that’s a good thing
Heck we crate trained our 4 dogs (English bulldog, Pug, Bassett hound and GSD-Lab mix), in our master bedroom - when we went to bed, they all went into their respective crates… all right next to each other (we had a huge master suite w/ sitting area, FP and TV, w/ direct egress to our rear patio and adjacent backyard)… we kept their crate spaces low-lighted, w/ all but the from gates covered, creating a personalized “den” for each
I never thought of crate training like the baby in the crib. Good advice. I've heard, too, that a crate gives a dog a sense of security because it's his "private" space.
My parents have had several dogs that when they began to get over stimulated by people visiting or something would go chill in their crate for a bit. It was their calm down/safe space.

Rational people aren't against crate training. It's the psycho animal rights people that don't know what they're talking about. They call everything under the sun animal abuse
Because its shocking to see a family member in a cage. My dogs also have safe spaces in my home, its just not cages. You do you tho, there is not just one way to raise a dog.
My dad asked me how I’d feel if I was in put in a crate 😒 He’s so opposed to animals in crates regardless of the benefits of crate training. It’s also putting human emotions on the animal. They aren’t humans.
@@Ilovedallthepeople It's still good to teach them for it because of the need for it during trips or emergencies like the vet, as the video talks about.
In the house, it's useful when they're young to avoid those issues, but as adults it indeed become useless. And is ugly looking on top of that.
@@tanez778 I agree its very ugly lol, just a cage in your living room. But also i have never been in a situation where carrying a whole cage with the dog in it is more practical or comfortable than carrying the dog on a leash or in my arms. Im sure it has some use tho for some people.
Crate training is so integral to developing several desirable character traits*, it boggles my mind that people don't do it. (*Proper potty training & bowel control, alleviation of separation anxiety, provides safe space & bed, not to mention everyone SHOULD be able to tell their dog to go lay down anywhere at anytime and have them be just fine with it.)
I have never used a crate in my life. Never had any problems with socializing or training without a crate.

Helps a lot when breeders get them started on loving their crates too. Saves the new puppy owner a lot of headache and grief, especially if they are first time puppy/dog owners.
Mine love their crates. They know it's a safe space that's entirely their area, and they put themselves there when they feel insecure or afraid, without any prompting. I'm convinced that having their own safe area helps their security and confidence and has made them better behaved as a consequence of that.
my dog loved her crate. i haven’t had to use it in a long time but she still sometimes will go over and sleep in it: it’s all about time spent in the crate and making it a positive situation. even if i had to crate her bc she was being naughty i was very careful not to treat it as though she was going in BECAUSE she was being naughty.

Absolutely! And I've had a couple of dogs that saw their crates as their personal "safe space". When they wanted a break from the family (we had three young boys), they would head to their crate for some R&R.
It’s a must! This guy knows his stuff! My dog goes in his crate on his own. We took the door off once he was trained. But it’s a safe place in there mind! Absolutely best thing I ever did!
It's a pretty good thing to teach them definitely. Doesn't mean you have to crate them constantly just enough for them to know its not a punishment
We call our dog's crate her safe place. She sleeps with us now at 3 years old but always goes in her crate when needed. Her bed and toys are there.
My dog is a presa canario and hes crate trained since day one. I absolutely recommend a crate to every dog. Just imagine u came as someone in to a appartment of someone else of knowing shit about the world. But u get introduced to a little own place, where u get all the things u need, with a consistent routine. And everytime u are overwhelmed with stuff, u can get back there and sleep all the day if u like. No one is bothering u. Its a blessing for everyone to have a place where u are secure.

So so true. I love your advice. My Tito started at 7 weeks using his crate as his toilet up to now, he is 2yrs old, never ever poo or pee any where in the house, the cage is now second choice, usually late nights which is quite rare. Thanks for all your great advices.
Such good advice. Works the same for newly adopted adult dogs. We make the crate a place they want to be in. Good things happen there that don't anywhere else. Helps to quickly house train them to a new house even if they were fostered and trained somewhere else. All my dogs and fosters love their crates.
Great for dogs that sometimes need to calm down but aren't able to themselves. My amstaff always want to be the center off attention, and after a couple hours he NEEDS that rest, in the crate he goes! He doesn't love it, but over time has accepted it. Really helps that he has a similar crate in the car as well.
Crate training was the best, most practical thing ive done for my dog, hands down. No stress for him at the groomer or vet if he has to in a crate for a bit, helped set up a good sleep schedule and helped him work through any separation anxiety. He very confident and knows we'll be back when we ask him to go in there for a bit.
I didn't crate train my previous dog and absolutely regretted it. She was a great dog, but anytime she needed to go into a crate (groomer or vet) it was a stressful situation for her, a dog who already was easily stressed. Thankfully, our groomer was wonderful and just left her loose in the backroom.

My dog is create trained my dogs and it halped a lot in the long run when she got older. Now she has some gland issues that makes her drink a lot, and then she couldn’t hold it all. This happened a lot when we weren’t home. So we took out her large crate from when she was a puppy and used that for when we had to leave home so she wouldn’t be doing to much property damage. That along with making shure she event outside and figuring out what was wrong helped fix the issue and keep the problem from ruining the house before we could find out what it was. The crate is a comfortable stop for her and she loved to just wander in and sleep in there on her own and that’s what you kinda want there reaction to be. I love my dog.
Well said. Our dogs hang out in their crate all day with the door open. It’s their spot & they love being there. All I have to do is close the door when I need them to stay there.
My relatives don't have crates but the lower workshop benches were turned into a sort of crate where they taught the dogs to stay "locked" or in "time-out" and that has made it a lot easier to contain them or bring them to the vet, so even if you can't really afford a crate, there are methods to teach the dogs the same principle

Crate training is a must!
My dogs crate is like his bedroom. It's his safe space but also a place he goes to if he's in trouble. But again it's still his safe space so even if he is in trouble he's still safe he's not getting hurt in or out of the crate. But he will go in and lie down in it when he wants as well as be sent to it. Mind you he has a bed in his crate as well as other things like toys etc. Which I know people don't agree with but he still sees the crate the same as everyone else. He will whine if he really really wants out like any dog but he goes in it when people first come over because he will sniff them like crazy. Or he will jump all over the sofa with the guests on for the ride. My dog was really easy to toilet train we just had to teach him to tell us when he needed because sometimes he wouldn't show any signs and just do it. So I ended up taking him out every 2 hours and then every 3 to kind of see how well he'd do. He's not left longer than 4 hours before needing to go.

Absolutely. My dog is crate trained. Took one day to potty train her. And she’s had a total of one accident in 5 years. The crate is not a punishment. It’s a place of their own to chill. We put the crate away two years ago and we had to bring it back out after she had torn ligament surgery and had to be on complete rest. Went right in. Zero struggle.
My last dog loved his crate, you gave him a treat and that’s exactly where he went, he felt safe there
Started training my Corso at 8 weeks. He is currently 2 years old and still being trained hahaha. He's a good boy and a big teddy bear.
One thing he did not talk about, but you see in the video. Is that he's making the crate a positive environment. It's a really bad idea to use it for disciplining.
Crate training was ESSENTIAL for my dog. She has separation anxiety and deals with it so much better in the crate. Leaving her out was causing her to pee everywhere. She's less anxious in the crate when left alone.
One thing I actually did right with training was crate training. My aussie’s crate is her safe space. She has no problem going into it.
It also helps that the breeders had crates too. Pretty large ones, but the concept remains. She was already used to it when he got her.

Could you do a video on abused dogs who are traumatized by the crate? My dog was left in a crate with his brother to starve. I’ve heard of lots of stories like this. I have got him to go in the crate and not to instantly poop, now we are working on me being able to leave. It’s slow going but I think it’s a video that would help.
Facts. My dogs love their "bed"... They think it's their rest stop. Naps, relax, treats. After they did a good job going potty outside and run around a little. When we go inside, I don't even say anything. They go and sit in the kennel ready for a treat

My dog loves her crate, at this point I don't need the door because she will just go there if I'm not around. She usually sleeps in it unless the cat has kicked her out.

I'll never leave my dogs in a crate when away from home or sleeping in case of a fire, but crate training itself is an amazing tool for many different ways of training.

Also don't use regular household cleaning products to deal with those "little accidents" either because they don't remove the leftover pheromones. Instead you should get a specialist cleaning product. Your local pet store or veterinarian will recommend one to you.

I've crate trained for decades. They actually make the crate their own special place after awhile. And my dogs, don't have one now, are crated in the car for mutual safety.
We never crate trained didnt have a problem with potty training with any but I do plan to crate train our next dog especially since it'll be my service dog.
My dogs aren’t exactly crate trained but my poodle puts himself in there when he’s overstimulated or I’m leaving somewhere. We don’t even close the latch. It’s comforting for him.
It depends on the dog, mine other than a pair of shoes and one puddle didn't need it, but she had a doggie door and so many toys and sticks it wasn't an issue to try to communicate what she needed as it was provided already.

I’ve also never had to crate a dog in my life, leash and in a car. Train your dogs to listen when they are called by you, and the people they are always around. If they like being in one, use one. But it’s not required if they have they’re set place to sleep
I had 8 ADBA pitbull, when they got older during the nights I had to keep them crated, at night, it would be a blood bath if I had not taken decisive action. The fighting was way too much to break up, I did it several times. Only 1 time I was bitten badly, about took my hand off. So crating for safety, big cages, it was paramount for safety

It also gives them their own space. As much as they love us, they can get a little too much hooman sometimes and go off to their safe place for some peace and quiet.
I have had many dogs & all were crate trained...they're great if there used correctly.
I have crate trained two pups and it’s the smartest and easiest thing to do. When you let them out of the crate you take them outside immediately and they take care of business. Hang outside for a bit and come in and let them hang around before going back in the crate. They learn better with the crate and they enjoy being in the crate provided it’s not too long.
Not on board with the clicker, but crate training is a must.

Our chihuahua had a whole room :). Any time we had company he knew he could go in there and not be bothered. Just a bit spoiled :)

I’ve had dogs my whole life used to take stray dogs in and home them not once and I mean once have I ever had to use a crate and none of my dogs went in the house none of them had bad habits cause I put the work in the train them properly. Now some people aren’t able to due to commitments etc but that doesn’t mean you need a crate you can use a puppy pad etc for going away for long periods or have a certain room like there’s solutions to every problem but it’s hard work
My grandfather has never crated any of his Dogs since he was a kid in 1933,. taught his first dog to climb a ladder. He would use a baby gate and leave the puppy in the kitchen when he left the house.
Train the puppy/dog to consider the crate its own personal den. And the first time you have broken glass, spilled cleaning chemicals, knocked over paint cans, or true emergencies like EMTs or LEOs needing access to your home to help you, you will be glad you can easily and quickly crate your dog.

Crating is only bad when you do it wrong, abuse it, and or make it a punishment. Crating done well is a blessing to your pup. It gives them safety, protection, and a space of their own when they’re done with people for awhile.
I’m sorry if this is a dumb question but in your opinion when would be a good age or time to be able to leave your dog out of the crate unattended?
As long as you don’t use the crate as a punishment, it’s great. Make it comfy and their own little den. As long as they have a decent line of sight out of the crate, they’ll just hangout in there. You don’t have to close the door on them to get value out of the crate.
we tried to crate train our German Shepherd, he ate the crate, yes plastic bottom and metal bars. So we just housebroke him normal. 10 minutes after eating, sleeping or playing we sent him out.
It's also good for them to have their own space for if you have a lot of people or young kids over, the dog will go there to be alone and away from the stress
I hate crating my guy, he will go in and wait patiently but he is such a grouch after 😂 he cries in the kennel when I leave but I let him roam the house when I'm gone and he's peaceful, it's good to make sure they're comfortable with the crate but I never used it as a crutch for not training him and pushing him away or punishment, frustration is the main thing I used the crate for because the small space can be frustrating and it will make them quick to calm themselves and control their frustration so they can get that positive reinforcement and more freedom it's a great training tool and they eventually won't even need it anymore if u do it right it's just a quiet space for them to sleep if they need to get away and relax

Raised five generations of American Pit Bull Terriers. People have to understand they are like children. You have to raise them right. All dogs. They are not just some toy. Some breeds need more attention that others but all need you to guide them to being the best they can be as a companion
There is nothing wrong with a crate either. My dogs would go willingly when it was bedtime.. I made them as comfortable as possible obviously. But boundaries and repetition helps establish consistency and understanding. I'm no expert, just someone who loves a misunderstood breed. Never had an issue with any of mine getting out of line and all were loving family dogs who listened and obeyed to the command.

I'm with you! I trained my puppy in a crate from 7 weeks old. When she peed I took her to the front door where I had some old newpapers! After seeing her going to the front door we trained her to pee and poo in our front yard. And after to train her to do it in a gutter. Yes we cleaned it. And later on to almost do it on command on a field! And to be honest, .... after two years being trained most basic stuff we also bought her a basket. And during the nighttime she wanted to be in the OPEN crate. But during the day she loved the basket! As a 4 years old we took away the crate. And bought an even bigger basket. She was such a good dog. Yes! you should train a puppy with a crate! But good behaviour should lead to trust and something better. From a human vieuw also! So a fully grown dog that is trained should not be locked anymore. If you need to do that, .... there was something wrong in the training! Not the dog.
My dogs love their crate. One laying in there now chewing an antler. No hesitation when I need them in the cage.
My dogs sleep in their crate at night. Usually around 11pm when I say bedtime they automatically go to the crate.
We never used crate/ kennel since we had him 6 weeks old. We just take him outside and keep eyes on him while we trained him.
We only used pee pads at night. In 2 weeks he starts going to the door letting us know...he is almost 4 months now never pee or poop in the house.
