    I so agree with you ! The fact of being open to change, to keep the old stuff and the « fail » stuff… I’m a French illustrator and i also discuss about these topics on my channel, but you did it with so more efficiency than me 😁 i was drawing in convention last week and some people say to me « I’ll never be able to do that » and i just respond « there’s nothing magical in here, it’s just about practice and passion and what you want to do with all this ! » well… it’s always difficult to say that kind of thing when you’re never satisfied when you finish your painting but maybe that’s the key, seek about the path 😊 thanks again so much for sharing ! 🙏

      Thanks for your lovely comment, Toubab. I've had the talent vs skill conversation with people many times as well! I'm of the opinion that talent is the product of skill and therefore of practice. I hear the counter-arguments as well and maybe there's also a message or vibe that could be unique to individuals that can itself be an impossible aspiration, I'm not sure. I can't see how we could ever know for sure and so at the very least, in the spirit of avoiding self-sabotage it makes sense to put the complete emphasis on practice and passion, I agree. 😎 Really appreciate you sharing your perspective!

    Its very important to brake through, every artist needs to be inspired and becoming one with that which you admire is what you call, (copy). One is not born with the techniques, the practice and dedication is monumental. Another problem, artists tend to feel quite high by just creating, it takes time to develop ones style or simple enjoy it, that joy requires to pass with frustration and everything that is annoying, in the search, experiencing as you say, a process. Thank you.

    I'm the kind of artist who loves to experiment and try new things because it makes me grow, makes me happy and leads me every time a bit closer to who I am at the moment. But we are not the same every day or in every periods of our lives. I'm always very frustrated when people tell me that, if I want to be recognised as an artist, I need to stick to one style and that the fact that I do so many different things is that I didn't find myself yet ! I don't want to feel stuck and keep doing the same thing all my life. That's the kind of artist I am and that's what makes me happy. I will keep on this path, no matter what people think.

I find I am drawn to several styles, from tonalist to bold color abstract, and had been worried that I didn't have a 'style' but I'm going to allow myself the freedom to create in whatever style is speaking to me at the time and not let myself be boxed in by acceptability. I just happened upon this video. The scene caught my attention. It brought to mind several mountain scenes I had earlier seen and tried to capture on paper. Did not go well. They are in my ‘collection’ of previous works. At first I thought what I was seeing was a total abstract. Then towards the end I saw the finer details. The combination was/is captivating. The narrative was/is just as captivating. The combination is such that I have subscribed to your videos. I want to see and hear more. Thank you for posting your work and your comments. I love watching Marie Louise, The Danish Painter. I find her to be inspiring through her art, videos and instruction. I agree, it’s what you choose to try, choose to keep and choose to let go that becomes your style. I find if I paint something too similar to a piece I’ve painted before, it doesn’t impress me. I’m not thrilled with it. I find more joy in the new, in discovery and in the moment. I do repaint works that I’m not happy with. I use them as further experiments. So, good advice on saving your work to that end. My favorite line from you is to remove the barrier that keeps you from painting/drawing and keep making art (to paraphrase you.) I also don’t force myself to create when I have or know I will have distractions. I wait until the path is clear. But I return to the path. You’ve earned a new subscriber. I’ll catch you on Instagram now, too.

    • @TimSchofieldArt
      @TimSchofieldArt  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Pat. 🙂 Thank you, great to meet another fan of Marie! I completely agree with you regarding not forcing it when it isn't right. I think ab early example of a barrier I noticed was as simple as dedicating a space to create art and to leave my things ohty so I didn't need to set up before starting every time. I think you'll probably agree that's a common one and I could have perhaps included in the videos but it's probably long enough as it is for now. 😄 I really appreciate your support, thank you. 🙂✌️

      @@TimSchofieldArt creating space to make art sounds like the focus of a separate video. In my youth, the kitchen table was "my studio." Having to set up, then to pack it all away certainly is a barrier I’m familiar with. My living room is now my studio since children are grown and no one goes in there. Although, I still have to straighten up when it’s untidy as I can’t work in chaos.

    Je n'ai pas tout compris car j'utilise la traduction automatique, pas grave car l'essentiel est dans ce qu'on comprend !
    J'aime bien votre façon de parler des souvenirs conscients ou non qui nous habitent, de la chose essentielle qui est de continuer à chercher, tout le temps, à faire, refaire et chercher, tester, continuer, laissez venir ce quelque chose en nous qui est nous sans qu'on le sache avant de l'avoir réalisé sur le papier aquarelle.
    J'aime peindre mes aquarelles, elles changent beaucoup de style, sujets, et je reviens à ceci puis pars vers cela. J'ai 70 ans et c'est un de mes bonheurs. Bonne journée,
    I didn’t understand everything because I use machine translation, not a big deal because the main thing is what we understand!
    I like the way you talk about the conscious and unconscious memories that we have, the essential thing of continuing to seek, all the time, to do, redo and search, test, continue, let come that something in us that is us without us knowing it before we have realized it on watercolor paper.
    I like to paint my watercolours, they change a lot of style, subjects, and I go back to this and then go to that. I am 70 years old and this is one of my joys. Have a good day,

    I am new to your channel and SO enjoying it! Watching this video makes me think about something else.. None of the paintings I have lined up to start, or almost none of them, are landscapes. It was ingrained in me in art school that you should never start a painting unless you can answer the question of why you are painting it. This is what I always ask myself and it's hard to answer sometimes. I have a friend who paints regularly every day. He's professional, he enters shows, he wins awards, but he often can't answer that question. Does anyone else do that?

      Great to hear you like the videos, thank you! Regarding the challenge of not painting until you know why you're starting, I've heard something similar to this before. I find it helpful to think of my abstract landscapes as part of a broader project which has its own purpose / goal. The ideas have grown a bit over a couple of years but have mostly stayed consistent. That way I always have a reason to paint them. 😁

    I had a peculiar thing happen over the last week. I wanted to do a painting as a leaving gift for a colleague of the place where we worked which is really beautiful and I was practicing drawing a gosling to add to the painting. I propped up the paper with my practice goslings and every time I get a glimpse of it I don’t recognise it as my own. It’s a very very odd feeling. I guess it’s like we know our own handwriting. But I am still struggling to find my ‘style’ and had started feeling like ‘fine I don’t have one, and who cares, I paint because I enjoy it.’ But now seeing the gosling drawings as not being me I think I’m closer to accepting that my illustrations are and always will be a bit cartoonish 🤷🏽‍♀️

      One time when I was a teenager I was determined to learn to draw realistic anatomy. I had a couple of books and I would do maybe two or three pages of bodypart sketch studies every day for about a year. Stylistically it couldn't have been further from what I do now, but I probably felt a bit closer to it at the time. I think styles can shift and change, but it's a bit like watching an iceberg melt. It happens so gradually that you don't really see it in real time. The actual icebergs in the real world are still melting too quickly, obviously.

    I just found your channel and am so enjoying hearing your thoughts on "the process." I am at the point in my watercolor "journey" where I can make a landscape almost come to life...but not quite. There is always some part that is "not right" and distracts from the good parts LOL I keep telling myself this is "ok" and that it is the growing that is good, but I yearn for a success; something I am proud of. What are your thoughts?

    • @TimSchofieldArt
      @TimSchofieldArt  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Pat 🙂 I think that's a totally normal and very relatable stage to be at. I understand the urge to have a piece that you view as a complete success and I think there are two things worth considering on that. First (and the closest I'll get to a platitude) is that patience and persistence are important; although it sounds from your comment like you have that figured pretty well. Secondly, there are pieces I completed in the past which I saw as a 'success' but now look back at with a different perspective. It's not to day that I dislike them, and I still remember why I was happy with them at the time, but I wouldn't be satisfied with the same result today. That feeling of 'success' when it comes to a finished piece can be very slippery - I see flaws that I would change in pretty much every painting I complete still today. It's another great reason to hang on to old paintings and look back to compare. With that said, that feeling of achievement and growth when it everything you've learned comes together in a seamless way to produce a painting that you're deeply satisfied with does happen. For me, it's almost always when I least expect it. Ironically, it's when I'm paying the least attention or trying the craziest experiment and perhaps that's because it feels like the pressure is off. I'm currently working on my next video which is about perfectionism and creativity; I hope there are some useful insights for you in there. I'm glad that you like the video and really appreciate your comment. 😁

      @@TimSchofieldArt Thank you so much for your response, Tim. I could tell that you would understand what was at the heart of my comment, and you did. I do keep most of my old paintings (unless, well, you know!) and I can see the growth. It also makes sense that that moment of satisfaction with my art may come when I least expect it. I know that I am never giving up. Besides, I love the process and the everything that makes watercolor magic :)

    Being a new artist, I would say that I'm still in an exploration stage. I'm not sure that I have even developed my own style as such. Not yet anyway. I'm into acrylic abstracts. A French artist by the name of John Beckley has been my greatest inspiration so far but I'm often looking at other artists, yourself included, for ideas, technics, inspiration etc. it is a journey that I'm finding both enjoyable and frustrating at the same time. 😃

    Have you ever seen elephants that Paint? on canvas. These elephants each had their own style of painting and even signed their name's. Suda the elephant is on UA-cam painting with others. Thank you for your advice.

    Hello! Thanks for the inspiration and beautiful art! Question: what is the tool with the orange hooked handle that I often see you using to apply paint when you first start a painting? It appears to have a flexible tip. I would like to get one! Thanks again!

      Hey Ed! Thanks so much 🙂 the tool I use is a silicone spatula- the kind that you buy to clean out a pan in the kitchen! I've gone through a number of tools and I find silicone to be a great texture to work with. I hope this helps! 🙂
