    When I describe a watercolour wash I'm referring to the paint that runs with gravity as the water moves across the page, leaving a translucent pigment behind. It's been some time since I last mixed colours on a pallete or used brushes to apply paint to the paper. A watercolour wash would normally be achieved including both of these techniques and so my use of the term might seem odd here. If it's bothersome, feel free to consider it used colloquially and not technically.

      I was thinking how neat and tidy an artist you are. Where are the paints and pallet? I see now why. I love all your videos. They are so calming and interesting. Just an obsevation. Please when you spray the sealant, spray into a box if you can. Those poor plants behind the painting will have the spray on their leaves and stems.

    there is a big difference between Loving something or only enjoying doing it.
    love give’s permanent value and will keep growing until success and enjoyment is a temporary feeling
    if you love something even if there is a mistake you will always go back to it like it’s a part of you but if you only enjoy doing it it’s very easy to feel fed up if something goes wrong and Eventually you will need to do something else to keep your enjoyment.
    drawing is an art that needs love not only enjoyment

    Sometimes it's best to put aside a drawing or painting that in the moment doesn't seem to be working. Coming back to the work later with fresh eyes and maybe coming to some realizations all seems better or in ways much better than at first it seemed to be. Some great works of the past were done this way, in stages and not in a forced one sitting, you're doing splendidly 👍

    • @TimSchofieldArt
      @TimSchofieldArt  2 роки тому

      A really great point regarding coming back in stages rather than forcing it. I don't find that forcing creativity even comes close to working! It usually just feels like I'm flapping my arms harder with the expectation that I'll take off into flight! 🛫

    I took a break from painting after I finished a big piece for my first (and only) exhibition back in 2018. I didnt take that break because I worked until exhaustion since I had a deadline or anything like that. In fact, I was filled with joy during that whole period but when I finished it it felt like I couldnt express my feelings throught my art anymore. I havent truly painted ever since.

    I'm just picking back up from years-long hiatus from painting. I painted off and on for years until I had kids, and while I know some artists can make it work with little ones, I couldn't. For painting, I need long stretches of uninterrupted time. When I started back up, the first few months were just an explosion of work, one after the next. It's slowed down now to a more reasonable pace. That doesn't mean I wasn't involved in any other creative projects - painting is just one of my preferred media. Interestingly enough, while I was expecting to have stalled in my skill during that time, I had still seen improvement in my work, likely due to working in other media in between. I also became skilled in media that were easier for me to do with little ones around that I likely wouldn't have explored if I hadn't taken a break.
    I thought maybe this might help some who need to take a break from painting. I like to refer to periods in our life as seasons. Sometimes right now isn't the right season for a particular type of work or endeavor, but seasons change. That season may or may not return. Like I said, it has been many years for me. If you can't paint right now, but you don't want to let go of it yet, it's not necessarily forever. Sometimes you just need to wait for the seasons to change.

    • @gigiartstudiowithartistvir3919
      @gigiartstudiowithartistvir3919 2 роки тому +1

      Sounds similar to my story. Like you, after getting back into my art(painting particularly), I have produced more paintings over the past 3 years, than I have in 40! Having kids changed a lot for me too. Now I'm an empty nester and have all the time in the world to paint. I too need long blocks of uninterrupted time to be able to get into it. Surprisingly it only took a couple of months to get to the skill level I'm at now. I taught myself how to work with soft pastels and watercolor, whereas before I was mostly an oil painter. No formal training, just have the art gene.

    • @TimSchofieldArt
      @TimSchofieldArt  2 роки тому +2

      Hey Magi! I appreciate your thoughts and experience with this. I can definitely relate to to sense of needing uninterrupted time to create, I feel strongly that that's an essential component for me as well. The framing of things as seasons is also a really nice perspective. 😄 Thank you.

    • @artofmagi
      @artofmagi 2 роки тому +1

      @@gigiartstudiowithartistvir3919 I am still a ways away from empty nesting, but my kids are at the ages where they are far more independent and, for the most part, can entertain themselves - not to mention better able to resist the temptation to use my art supplies. They have their own, decent ones too, maybe student grade if anything or ones I didn't need and passed on to them, but mom's are always better, lol. Sometimes I even will allow them to use mine, if they have proven capable of being respectful of the tools. But I have also shown them that the art supplies aren't usually that big of a deal in making good art, and sketched a drawing of a mug using one of their crayons on construction paper as an example. Of course that comes with a caveat, as the paper and in some cases the paints do make a difference in learning how to paint effectively, at least in watercolors. So I will get them the better quality budget stuff whenever necessary.
      It's so necessary though, to keep up with creative endeavors, especially as a parent, because they won't be at home forever. It just doesn't have to be the same thing as before, but something to not lose oneself. I remember the advice I got from others, "you won't have time for that," which was a depressing thought, not necessarily for myself (I knew I would figure something out) but that they believed they had to give something up.

    • @artofmagi
      @artofmagi 2 роки тому +1

      @@TimSchofieldArt yes, I didn't come up with it, but when I heard someone else frame things as seasons, everything clicked and felt less dire? Not only when it came to letting things go entirely, as in the season had passed, or isn't now, but also in realizing that seasons aren't forever. The fantasy self was another concept that was useful, to avoid collecting things for a future self that hadn't happened, or holding onto things because of an idealized image of oneself that isn't based in reality.

    • @gigiartstudiowithartistvir3919
      @gigiartstudiowithartistvir3919 2 роки тому +1

      @@artofmagi Totally relate. I decided watercolors weren't all that because when I started using them, I didn't have good quality paint. That is how I ended up being an oil painter haha. I'm so glad I later revisited the medium and worked with better supplies! After years of oil painting it was so foreign to me and there was a real learning curve. Anyway, I always tell beginners who want to paint in watercolor to go ahead and buy better supplies. They will enjoy the experience so much more. Currently, watercolor and soft pastel are my favorite mediums! Soft pastels are another medium I tell beginners to pay a little more for. The performance is night and day.

    Your journey in art resonates with me. I've done art my entire life off and on over the past 40 years. The art gene is in my dna and I can't imagine not doing it, though I have gone long periods(months and years)without painting simply because I wasn't motivated or inspired. I've never done art professionally, but that could change. I have been invited to show my art in a gallery for the whole month of October. which was quite unexpected. I'm anxious actually because I have never done anything like that before. For one thing, I don't have the money to frame my art. I have managed to mount my watercolor paintings on cradle board, varnish them, and wax them to protect them since they won't be under glass which I hope is not too shoddy a way to deal with my watercolor paintings. Your frames look great btw. However, I also have several fairly decent soft pastel paintings and the only way I've been able to frame them is with cheap store bought frames. Again, it just makes me nervous that people will judge me harshly as my art won't be in beautiful expensive frames like one normally sees in art galleries. Aside from that, I don't have giant paintings. My largest watercolor paintings will be 22x30inches. Most of my work is in the 8x8, 9x12, and 12x12 sizes. Anyway, sorry for rambling...I'm thinking out loud here. Wish me luck because I have no idea how to present my art in a professional manner and am truly winging this art show thing. Aside from that, I started a youtube channel and have done nothing with it. I need to give myself a serious talking to and get with the program!

      Awesome news about the gallery! Wishing you the very best of luck with it, I hope that it goes great.
      I've seen people use a wide range of frames in galleries including expensive and cheap ones. I think that the main thing is just that the frame is sturdy; there will be afforable ones out there! A big advantage is that you're working in standard sizes because sometimes the expense comes is really needing custom sized frames. That was my experience, since the only cheap custom options I've ever seen have been quite poor quality. You'll have many more options with the dimensions that you're working in. 😄
