I've never listened to her music in particular, but I've repeatedly seen live UA-cam clips of her singing on different performances, and she has consistently killed it. And not in a good way.

I love how gary barlow is not pushing so hard knowing cheryl’s vocal abilities.
To me, her voice sounds flat and tired and strained almost all the time.

Literally, her audition for Pop Stars had Louis Wash and the other male judge gushing about how beautiful she was. There was no other comment really shown.

My thoughts. You don't have to be a good vocalist to judge other's vocals. Just like how we could all judge her in UA-cam :). Simon and LA can't sing but they judge as well. Fact is they know how to make it big. And when you become a singer, you're not just singing for people who could sing, you know?

Why did they hire her to judge other people's vocals on X Factor? 99% of the time she lip syncs and she has such a weak, thin voice anyway. Ridiculous. I guess she just went there to collect her paycheck, not because she has any credibility as a vocalist... ;)

This! it's not a hard song to sing. It just shows that she has no vocal control or strength for that matter. She's gorgeous, but we gotta be honest.
The problem that I have with cheryl vocals she is a mezzo soprano and she tries to sing in a key that's too low for her just to make her sound unique be doesn't have the control to do that then she most of the time be missing notes

Because Cheryl was specifically requested by the Princes. I guess Gary didn't want to inflict her on anyone else, so he took the bullet himself, hoping he'd be able to save something of the performance.
Whenever I have a bad day, I watch this and have a few laughs.

Gary Barlow was perfect! He could have sang it perfectly on his own, every time it went on to just him singing it sounded amazing. It was Cheryl who ruined it. Poor Gary.

Can remember watching this live, cringing and wondering if something was wrong e.g. a technical issue making it difficult for her to hear correctly, causing her to sing off key, it was so bad I had butterflies in my stomach for her all through it on the day.

It's funny, when Cheryl plays to her strengths she is good! She is like Selena Gomez, but the difference is Selena sticks to her strengths and that makes her great at what she does, Cheryl needs to do the same... still I'd definitely see her in concert because she is an excellent performer

I remember watching this aghast at the time. Cheryls voice sounds so weak and out of tune and Gary sounded like a singer at a holiday camp to me.

I am so pleased you have reviewed this performance as I value your professional opinion. I always felt that it was a weak and embarrassingly poor attempt by Cheryl and I am surprised that Gary Barlow seemed happy to let her do it. I would have more sympathy for Cheryl if she came across as being more pleasant and a kinder person. How long will it be until her looks completely fade and she is forgotten ?

The drummer is Donavan Hepburn. He is currently also playing in Jeff Lynne's ELO touring band. In fact it wouldn't surprise me if the entire backing band (excluding the string section) are also Jeff's backing band, given the fact that at Jeff's first live appearance after his long seclusion was at the British "Children in Need" charity event being backed by.... Take That's backing band. Kinda comes full circle, right... ?

The problem is 1. Cheryl needs a vocal coach (and not the same one that Kimberley uses because although Kimberley’s voice has improved she cannot sing a song like defying gravity and I’m surprised somebody didn’t let her know that fact)
2. Someone needs to tell her she’s an alto and should stick with singing and practicing her lower notes rather than trying to reach the higher ones. I feel like she actually would have done much better if she sang the guy part of this song
It's pretty simple, Gary can sing, and Cheryl is just a beautiful woman.

I’m going to be another person to mention that the drummer’s name is Donovan Hepburn. Yes he has been touring with Take That since 2006. Also touring with Jeff Lynne. In fact, the band in this jubilee concert, sans the orchestra, choir, etc, is Take That’s band. Also Gary’s.

Okay, I know I‘m late to the party but what the actual F? I‘m not shocked about how successfully she ruined the performance, she‘s been consistent on that department for a while. What actually shocks me is that she (or the corporation that owns her) thought it was a good idea for her to sing in front of such a huge crowd! Or any crowd, to be honest. It might have been inspiring to the audience though - in a "if she can do it, then most definitely I can too" kind of way. Wow... just wow. 🤯

I've always said that the song choice was so wrong, she's not a country singer by any stretch. The Children in need performance with snow patrol is great. Gary has a different type of voice and they didn't exactly go together.

You should judge decent screamers like Kat Bjelland who has a great ear and tones it down. When done right. Passion and technique. Polly harvey etc.
