  • The main reason for having quit being a mechanic was because of the glitchy app and low supply of actually available for pick up scooters. There was an abundance of missing or ghost scooters making it a really annoying process to find ones.

    I don't get people that sign up to be a mechanic when they can't change a tube or tire. This is about 80% of the job. If anyone reading this is thinking about being a mechanic please realize that it does take basic mechanical knowledge to do this job. I was an auto machnic for 10years and this is hands down the easiest job I've ever had. Once you learn the tricks of the app you can easily make $200+ a day in as little as 4 hours but you do have to know what you are doing. Let me reiterate, if you can't fix everything on them DON'T SIGN UP! Leave the job to people that want to earn their money and have the knowledge to do so. Thanks for posting this video, hopefully it discourages people who just want to make a quick buck.

      Facts bro! Folks dont want to grind! I worked DC, Baltimore, Alington VA, Raleigh NC, Charlotte NC, Atlanta and Nashville! Literally spent a year and a half out on the road fixing birds! Shit was fun as fuck! $200-$400 per day guaranteed, Highest day was $510. But if your skills lack and you're not willing to get ur ass up at 4am...IT AINT GONNA HAPPEN!

      @@TorqueTubeNetwork Yeah, but how much Did You Really Make after accounting for the taxes they didn't take out of your dough? The total time? Plus the costs of gas and wear and tear on your vehicle? I can literally disassemble and repair about anything including computers, cars, electronics, appliances etc. I'd need to Add Up exactly the real figure I'm making per hour before doing this. Every time I've worked as a contractor, it's always bitten me in the ass if I was using one of my vehicles. Not due to doing the actual job, due to being unable to do the job because of outside circumstances. If I'm using one of my vehicles, my pay better approach $30 an hour- After Taxes.

    So as a mechanic you have to pick them up yourself and I'm assuming take them to your home and fix them or do they have a shop? I just got called by a recruiter about being a mechanic for lime. I have 11 years of automotive experience so I can figure out how to fix these thing after doing a few. I'm in LA and these scooters are literally a block away from my house and are at almost every few corners. Could be decent money makers with so many out there.

    Looks like the being a Bird Mechanic (at least here in Los Angeles) is
    going to be discontinued. Just got the below message today :(
    We’ve had an amazing ride with our Bird Mechanic community over the last
    year. Your diligence and hard work helped make bringing an eco-friendly
    transportation option to the city of L.A. not only a possibility but a
    reality.
    In order to better serve the community, we our expanding
    our in-house repair facilities. As a result, we will be ending the
    mechanic program in Los Angeles in the next few weeks.
    Thank you again for your time, effort, and the stories you’ve shared with us.
    Please keep an eye out for upcoming announcements about your account as we begin the transition.
    Until the next ride,

    Thanks for making this video. I just signed up to be a mechanic the other day. I was really excited to do this, it sounds like perfect work for me that I'll enjoy. But if it's the same situation in my area as in your area then I'll be very disappointed and see about signing up as a charger.
    Are you not permitted to be a charger and mechanic? You could remain a mechanic and just do the scooters you come across you can easily fix

    • @rideintocash9085
      @rideintocash9085  6 років тому

      Blurry Face The BIRD map of available scooters to charge will be saturated with birds that are not where it says it is, always look at when the last ride was and when the location was last updated.
      - Anything beyond listed as today or yesterday is not worth looking for because it will likely not be at the point on the map... So just skip those older ones, don't waste your time.
      - If you have a Android phone, consider switching to a iphone, the iphone app is a better more accurate version of the app according to BIRD employee I spoke with.
      Find a way to get more chargers so you can charge more scooters nightly.
      - You can drop off fully charged scooters super early like 3/4am if you awake and able.
      - Get a rug to have on the floor of where you charge to the scooters to preserve and protect your floors.

      Oh I'll probably charge on concrete. Don't want to have the worry of carpet causing thermal issues (potentially starting a fire). I may see if my friend is down to sign up as a charger and I can do the work for him and just give him money for the taxes and a lil extra for the trouble of the taxes...that is if working as a mechanic works out for me and I don't decide to switch to being a charger like you did

    • @rideintocash9085
      @rideintocash9085  6 років тому

      Blurry Face thats true, the heat + carpet could lead to a fire risk.
      Its funny that you mention the mechanic + use friends account to charge / i had the same idea to do it because my friend had signed up as a charger before me and doesn't really actually do it. It could work out well to do that!

    Why can't you do both charging and mechanical work for them.
    Surely it's just a matter of plugging in to charge and while you have a load of them on charge those that are broken you be fixing while the others are charging then once you have fixed the broken ones you charge them as well, then put them all out at once which will save you money on gasoline.
    In fact get an electric cargo bike and use that to collect the scooters that way you don't spend any money on gasoline at all more money in your pocket.
    Get one that goes a reasonable speed and you are made, you would be able to go places with your electric cargo bike that you couldn't with your car in order to find the scooters.
    Seriously think about it, yes the cargo bike will cost you money to buy first off, but the money you save and the money you would make being able to find the scooters in places you can't go in your car would probably pay for itself very quickly.

    • @rideintocash9085
      @rideintocash9085  5 років тому

      I believe it's because of the risk of fraud so that someone doesn't mark damaged and then fix a potentially not actually damaged scooter

    • @flitsies
      @flitsies 5 років тому

      Seems daft to me, all the people that do the work would need do is take a photo of the scooter when they pick it up which would highlight the damage that needed to be fixed, that way the mechs and the chargers could be combined into one, and those doing the work would get both amounts and the work would be done faster.
      Judging by what I have seen, I don't believe their system is a viable one that will be sustainable, these scooters don't go that far on a single charge so they are probably dumped quite a lot.
      By combining both jobs and paying those able to do both jobs the fee appropriately it not only provides a good income it provides a much better service for the scooter and users.
      I am unfortunately unable to try out these scooters as I am in the UK but logically it would make a lot more sense to have both jobs done by one person, otherwise it means two people need to find that one scooter in order to keep it functional on a daily basis.

  • @rlt422
    @rlt422 5 років тому

    You do realize that it's not all theft. Quite a few of the vanishing scooters are being impounded by police then being sold at auction after Bird fails to claim them. Bird's whole business model is very problematic and lends to product loss. Combine that with the fact that I still don't think they have obtained the necessary licensing from the state or the cities they operate in and you have a business that won't be around to much longer if they don't get a bit smarter about how they do things.

    • @doug2279
      @doug2279 5 років тому

      they can get like 10 bucks a day profit from one scooter so if one lasts a year they get 3,600 bucks and they cost like 450 for an electric scooter or 1000 bucks so they afford to lose a few. They will also get better at stopping the theft i imagine over time.

    Just buy your own scooter. I did, and I use it almost every day. I bought a Segway Ninebot ES1.
    The tires are solid rubber, so rougher ride but no flat tires.

    I hate these scooters littering the streets, I hate the inconsiderate assholes riding them with zero regard for cars, pedestrians or traffic laws, I hate that these scooters are impacting short ride income on Lyft and Uber. So complaints I hear about the difficulties of being a mech or a charger is all music to my ears.

      Because the so-called real job as you describe it is not give me the freedom like I have when I do work like drive for Lyft or charge scooters for bird and lime... I've already made$4, 400 this month charging scooters and I have yet to work at night longer than 7 hours, and I've maybe worked 18 days this month. If you don't want to do work like this that's cool, most don't have the hustle and determination within them to make a gig economy job like this work.. but hey thanks for the comment and have a great day!
