I'm a bit nervous to share this and put it out there. I poured EVERYTHING into this, and it was only when I recently went through it that all of it came rushing back. None of my friends or family knew that I had this 'bargain with myself' or the importance of this folio. I never told anyone about it incase I didn't make it. I think I was just afraid of people knowing if I had failed at something I set out to do. To all who are currently crunching finals and working on folios, good luck and I hope you find this somewhat useful! #brbchasingdreams

I have the same fear: afraid of people knowing I failed. It's hard to overcome people opinions in life. Don't know why I'm a bit shedding tears while writing this. Facing our fears is so hard. Thank you for inspiring me and helping me to be faithful in myself. Maybe both successes and failures are essential for us to grow. It's still tough. But I’m trying.

I wish I had a class like that when I was in high school. My art teachers just gave us an assignment and sat at their desks. They didn’t really support us very much, guess it doesn’t help when people see it as an easy A. Wish I had your perspective and dedication like you. I was also told pursuing art would make me end up jobless and homeless....

I felt pressured and felt like I had the need to be in courses with “real jobs”. I entered university with nursing as my course and shifted to advertising arts a year later. I’ve never been happier!!

Thank you for this comment. I dropped physics and chemistry two days ago to focus on persuing art even though I was doing well in them but I just don't have a passion for science. I had this heavy regret like my whole life was now altered and everyone was saying that I made a stupid mistake. But I also feel free and happier and art does something for your soul that science can't. I hope I can look back and say I made the right choice but your comment has inspired me because art is worth it.

Skippable comment (trust me, it's kinda sad)
Wish I could say the same. I'd be lying if I say I'm not looking for a courae that'll give me enough money that I need. I started drawing since I was 4 years old and then improved throughout the next 13 years of my life. Sadly, I can't take a Fine Arts degree or anything that majors on art since I'm somewhat like the breadwinner of the family and therefore pursue a much more "logical" course instead to help my parents and help pay my younger sibling's tuitiom fees. I AM interested and fascinated of courses such as medicine and architecture. I'd probably take the Doctor route (as nearly ever Asian parent wants their child to take), it's gonna be stressful and tiresome and all that yada yada but hopefully, I'll be able to work in the medical field. If I actually pursue this course, I'll do my best to never forget my love for the arts. Maybe someday I'll be able to take an art degree or class, just... not today.

    Hieu,
I just wanted to say thank you. For allowing me to feel motivated again. I too am pursuing an art subject and it’s been the biggest weight I’ve carried with me for three years now. Each page I had to fill in my sketchbook felt like a chore and it seemed like my love for doing art was stripped away by the thought of doing it for a grade. So I rebelled and procrastinated my artwork, I didn’t see the point of it yet I still came out with surprising grades. It is now really hard to get top marks for both your final piece and sketchbook but I’m willing to try my hardest. I’d also like to add that you are documented throughout my sketchbooks as my main source of inspiration and artist research. Thank you!! I needed this video.

I just wanted to say thanks to you for doing this video. I take art at school in Australia and I was really lost when we got the task to create a visual art diary (which is this but with a slightly different name) because I had never done something like it before. My first semester diary wasn't great and I got really low marks for it, so decided to look online for a guide or for ways to improve and your video was literally the only thing I could find. After watching it I realised that I had been going about it the wrong way, these types of folios aren't just about documentation and research, they're essentially a written artwork to demonstrate your understanding and explain your thoughts and choices. Once I started thinking about it like that and putting a little more effort into the right things, I had something I was really proud of, regardless of what grade it got. Long story short I ended up with highest grade in my school for it and I wouldn't have been able to do it unless I watched this video, so thankyou. ☺️

I'm an art student at University. i always knew illustration of some kind would be my life, i still do. my passion to create burns steady and seeing this just makes me want to finish strong for my last two-three years. I'm only seeing this video today Nov 16th, and I admit I feel very relieved. To know that your uneasiness about careers and the future was something I dealt with as well around high school. I finished a Visual Arts program which allowed me to be creative and learned that I do love making art . But after it was done I was feeling the same way I felt back then and my uneasiness came back. I began questioning myself and wondered if its still ok to go down this path. Seeing your efforts and enjoyment with making art reminded me that thats how I want to feel and continue to learn and grow with. I really enjoy looking at your art and realized I gave up too fast: therefore, I want to try again and become as talented as you are. Thank you for making this video XD And keep creating!

    Hello Hieu!
I have no idea if you will read this but I just wanted to share how thankful I am that I came across your channel a couple years ago. I have been following your journey and it has sparked something in me that I don't think I would have ever acknowledged unless I saw your work. I was in touch with my artistic side for years. I pursued an associate's degree in graphic design during my junior college years and I was also a musical theater major for a very long time. I decided to give up on those pursuits because truthfully both of them were not feasible for me financially at the time. I had to put myself through college on my own, work 2 restaurant jobs and complete a degree. I decided to choose something more practical and go for a communications degree instead. I found a job in the communications field and realized that I wasn't entirely happy with it. The aspects that made me like it was related to social media and graphic design. Because of your channel and also because of the loss of my dear Music mentor, Pro Mojica, this 30-year-old woman (me) has decided to follow her heart and do a 180-degree turn to live and breathe art like how I was supposed to in the first place. Your channel has inspired me tremendously; I am extremely grateful for you. This video is bringing tears to my eyes as I write all of this. Seeing your beginnings and your process is quite an honor. Thank you for doing what you do. I will do my best to make it to your exhibit in Los Angeles in December.

This is awesome to see, my current art was submitted to top arts and I went through the same experience as you had, everyone telling me art is not a path to pursue, and unfortunately I am not pursuing art, as I have another passion that I am pursuing. My art is nowhere near as skilful and amazing as yours, and my folio is very sad looking lol. I don’t believe I will get into top arts, but it’s awesome to know you have come from a place similar to where I stand today.

I graduated school 10 years ago but grew up loving to draw, paint, photography and design. I was always told art is not a job and it a mere hobby so I continued art as a hobby only. I ended up working in a law firm and have since become a qualified Lawyer. I now regret the wasted 10 years in a field that does not bring me joy and restrains my personal time and therefore impacts me creating art. I am now looking into changing careers into game design, animation or graphic design because I sure as heck do not want to be a Lawyer for the rest of my life.

Thank you for sharing your art folio. It tells me that never to be afraid of exploring things. Welp, I'm having problems with exploring coz I have this mindset of "things have to be done in a systematic way". I developed that mindset like way back when I was a kid. So it was kinda hard to break it even though I want to explore. Especially now coz I'm learning texture painting to pursue a career as a 3d artist. But whenever I grab the mouse and pick a color to paint the 3d model, there's something inside that tells me that I have to learn the steps which kill the "exploration" in the creative process

Omg your art is so amazing and beautiful. I’m 16 years and I need some advice. So I was wondering how did you get so good because I feel like I’m not getting any better and I suck at proportion on human faces, body, and on anime/ animation. And I’m stressing out because I only have 2 years of high school left and then college and I’m afraid I’m not going to be good enough to get into a good collage or even one at all. Like what books or techniques, videos to get this good and what can I do to least get better on the faces and proportion and drawing in general. Also to not rush and take my time because.

    • @Christodophilus
      @Christodophilus 4 роки тому +1

My advice: pick something you suck at, and reproduce it multiple times in different media, colours/monochrome, etc. Once you master one piece, it's easier to build more pieces onto it. What Hieu's portfolio demonstrates, is how he observed and practised different elements before putting them together in a final work. He studied eyes, ears, different face angles, etc, before selecting a style and materials. If you type "how to draw better", in the search box, a bunch of videos will help you. Good luck. :)

I’m currently enrolled in my college sophomore year of a major that is basically Graphic Design, and requires illustration classes. MANY of my peers had never illustrated or really even sketched before these classes. You can do it, even if you can’t be the top you’ll still have your own unique value and character that makes your art your own. Chase that, enjoy the process of learning new things and keep telling yourself “maybe I can get better.” Having that little bit of hope in you will spark so much more growth.

What Dakota said is so true and I like to add something to that I got into a selective school (5 people a year) because of my creativity and concepts in my portfolio (I even added stuff I drew as a kid). Even though I defenitly was not the best technically, I am still not, I think the most important thing is to not be afraid to be creative experiment and fail with art it will make your work so much better.

High school art isn't really that serious or crazy, I'm sure if you draw everyday or just really love drawing you'll be perfectly fine! And they teach you the basics so you can improve. I'm a junior in high school right now and trust me, its just a little more serious than middle school art but nothing super crazy or hard! You'll do fine dont worry :)

Inspirational. Thank you for sharing your learning process. I want to borrow ideas you used to explore what inspires you and how you documented your journey of exploring art materials and techniques to discover what worked. I am trying to figure out my own art goals. This is a wonderful example of how to develop your own art style - the best I have seen. Much of you folio has “mood boards” which many artists use. Excellent organized but also creative method for developing yourself as an artist. It is no wonder you were successful because you have talent but developed your talent with a lot of hard work and “focus” on what inspired you. I love you style of nature and portrait. Beautiful. So happy for you. Your folio is like a class on how to develop your art style. Could be a book.
