✨My Accepted RISD Portfolio✨

  • How I finessed my way into one of the best art colleges??? My entire Illustration portfolio for the class of 2022!
Looking back, I have no idea what I was thinking when I put this portfolio together. I had so many pieces I could've used, but instead I picked this mediocre stuff... RISD still liked it (a lot,, enough to give me a huge scholarship) so I guess it all worked out really well :)
Also, I know that the audio sucks, I'm so sorry I tried something new and it failed :(
I'm not trying to show off, I've worked really hard on not just this portfolio but my entire art career up to this point--- so uhhhh NOT TO FLEXXXXX OR ANYTHING
Please ask me any questions you have about art college applications, my art, or just art in general :))
    More info about me:
✨-I've been drawing since I was 3, taking professional classes since I was 6.
✨-I've won a plethora of competitions- probably what got me that scholarship
✨-I had a couple of leadership positions in high school such as the fencing captain, the french club president, and the National Art Honor Society president. I didn't just do art my entire life, I tried to branch out! Extracurriculars are important!
✨-I've taken a good amount of AP's, but I never overloaded my schedule. My personality is the type to want everything to be the best it can possibly be, so I've kept straight A's since I was in school in the first place. That means I ended with a 4.0 unweighted (4.4 weighted!)-- it didn't kill me to get it, just a lot of work. Don't push yourself TOO hard, figure out what college you wanna go to and find their standards and try to exceed those, saves you a lot of work.
✨--My SAT score is quite terrible (by my standards) because I simply didn't study very hard for it. The only thing I slacked on my entire high school career is my SAT lmao I know its important but I just couldn't push myself anymore.
✨-My commonapp essay was pretty good in my opinion, I tied in how I was bilingual and how art helped me learn a new language. I've heard that you shouldn't write about art when applying to art college (from RISD themselves) but who knows?
    Are you still reading?? lmao

Also, I did use reference for many of pieces, but in my high school and art class that was encouraged-- i understand many people have different opinions on whether that is right or wrong, but I have recreated pieces with my skill level, and no one has ever told me not to. Although I no longer use references as heavily as I did in high school, I do admit that often times my pieces would be HEAVILY inspired,,, I'd just like to let everyone who has commented know that I have learned and grown, and I no longer do what I used to in high school obviously :) Things change, thats just how it be :)
    ✨✨Thank's so much for watching!✨✨

@@br3.e_o570 Hi! I applied to SVA and MICA for animation and I was accepted into both! I might make a portfolio video some time, I don’t think my portfolio was crazy strong. I didn’t go to either because I thought it was way too expensive and the pandemic made me sure I wanted to go to community college first. I go to Montgomery College and I’m majoring in animation right now. I may transfer to umbc or mica.
Even if you don’t have the money to go to art school, I’d say applying to see if you can get in is still valuable. Shooting for that goal forced me to draw from life more and learn art more seriously. Best of luck to you!

I didn't start drawing until high school and didn't even start my portfolio until junior year when I just realized I wanted to apply to art schools. Just be creative and different! If you look like everyone else's portfolio then they wont notice you. You don't even need that many drawings either if your not good at that. :0

I got to a makeup school not art school, but the main reason why I even SWITCHED to AP Studio Arts on the second half of my high school year, was because of the FREEDOM to create what ever tf u want. It’s more fun to me and honestly helped me in the makeup school I go to as well, since me being able to confidently create art with my own ideas and “rules” helped me stand out from the rest without even having to tlk about my accomplishments as an artist.

Practice drawing from life! So many students are only drawing from photos, and that can really limit your drawing skills. Carrying a sketchbook everywhere with you is a good way to start that as a habit.

  • @velvetchiharu

People criticizing her for being "unoriginal" or a "copier" are seriously immature and lacking in perspective.
    1. Copying other work is literally part of the learning and development process. In ANY creative discipline you will be expected to copy and adapt prexisting styles and works so you can LEARN from them. (Art, Music, Literature, Cuisine, Film they all do it) This is a very common approach to developing your own unique voice and it's obvious from the very WIDE variety of styles she included that this is what she's doing. She's showing that she's experimental, versatile and adaptable which is very important because of reason #2
    2. She's applying for graphic design. When you work in the graphic design industry it's very common that you will run into clients who have prexisting brand styles or their own aesthetic that you will need to adapt to. As a professional she could be working on a Nike March Madness ad campaign on monday, developing a cartoon welcome package for a children's hospital on wednesday, and putting together a promo catalog for New York Fashion Week by friday. If she wants a job in that type of industry I would fucking HOPE that her sense of style and aesthetic is flexible enough to make convincing designs for all three of those situations on any given day. For any of you to be badmouthing her for being FLEXIBLE and OPEN MINDED, two qualities that are highly useful in the industry she's going for, that is just so ignorant and clueless. Which by the way,
    3. If you have any real sense of art you would be able to see that she wasn't just copying work like a soul-less robot. Each piece included varying levels of her own personal savvy and I'm sure that was evident to whoever judged her portfolio. Yes, she passed in all other regards (grades, curriculars whatever,) but the fact that her portfolio itself was very decent, is to me, kind of the point of this video. This is essentially a resume for the department she's trying to get into. Everything she included had to be relevant to what they needed to see in a good student. This wasn't her time to be like "look at how original I am, this my BRAND" she was SUPPOSED to be like "look how prolific and varied I am, I can handle whatever you throw at me!" She may or may not have her own very defined and very unique style, but the fact of the matter is that showing off her "unique style" was not relevant in this situation. She showed good technical ability and design sense across various mediums and styles. Experimenting and developing her technical ability are clearly the priorities here and she's actually doing very well for it. If you're going to be reductive and criticize her for "copying" then you're missing the bigger picture.

Please if youre going down the art road, DO NOT COPY ANY ARTISTS WORK EXCEPT FROM YOUR OWN AND PLEASE DONT COPY PICTURES. observational drawings give you a level of professionalism and unique style that her art work doesn't show.

HELLO! Current college art student here, your art is beautiful and you have wonderful skill (talent sounds like you were born with skill, it takes a lot of hard work and practice to understand how to make elegant artwork). I noticed that for most of your artwork you point out what you don't like. Don't undersell yourself! You are your biggest advocate and your attitude about your work will effect how others view and value your work. If you don't highly value your work, that gives a potential client or company a reason to either A. Not invest in your work or B. Invest much less than it is worth. Draw attention to what is well done and show people that your accomplishments shine brighter than your weaknesses. People will view you and your work more positively. Only speak about weaknesses in a critique--after you point out your strengths. This way, you still stay grounded and see where you can improve.

These are all beautiful! As an artist myself, I hope that my art can be as detailed and I can use color as well as you do one day. I love watching videos seeing people's art portfolios because it always inspires me to keep going with my art because I see their art and I want mine to look as good as theirs one day. Thank you for inspiring me❤. I am in 8th grade, and my dream is to one daybe an artist and go to art school. I just got a job working with my old art teacher teaching kids from ages 5-12. My dreams are finally becoming reality. This is a message to every artist and anybody who reads this who loves art. Your art is BEAUTIFUL, and you are BEAUTIFUL so keep going with your art, and never give up. I've learned that you cant rush through art, and improvement so take your time, and be proud of every brush stroke, pencil line, streak of color you make because it is amazing. Dont let the accidents, the Mark's you dont mean to make in your art, a mistake. Make it an inspiration to do more. I believe in all of you because you can all do this and you are going to reach your goals. if I can do it, then you can do it too.
    -Ren ❤
