@@jacobpullen6949 me too fr, got to driftveil, got the underground kit and said "jesus christ this is so low effort THIS is sinnoh remakes?" and never played it again
The problem with these games is we cant shake the feeling we were shortchanged. Instead of getting a HGSS style reimagining of Sinnoh with all of the original content plus all of the gen 8 mechanics and pokemon and graphics that pushed the latest system, we got the old mechanics with the old pokemon and missing content from the original. Being faithful doesnt make BDSP bad, but when remakes have been used as an opportunity to reimagine an old region to conform to the latest generation of pokemon, getting sinnoh remakes that are stuck in gen 4 feels like a wasted opportunity.
I liked how they did it in gen 5 where if you went off the beaten path you found the good some of the best TM's like flamethrower. I think that's better than just going back to the stupid breakable TM's there's no reason to have them like that when HM's don't break
@@itstheman0nthem00n I mean you don't have to do that with re usable TM's. Making things tedious doesn't make the game better but for the sake of earning the good stuff I was leaning towards being rewarded at the end of a dungeon or from exploring outside the main path so it's not just a handout cuz that's also lame
Honestly I think crafting is the best, adding a barrier between stuff is cool. I just wish it made exploring more fun like tms do. Also I do prefer the decision making of will I keep this pokemon and should I give them this?? It also makes the pokemon you put it on more special and back in the day talking to friends about how you could put flamethrower on slowpoke was so exciting and almost felt like I was cheating. Yet no one else could because it was on a obvious choice. Now finding stuff like that isn't special partially due to youtube and partially due to tms now feeling special. Hms are needed to beat the game (mostly) so they should be overly useable but just fine options like waterfall and not as good as early games surf. Surf kyogre was dumb.
The easiest solution would just have all TMs available in a post game shop if the game is balanced around sprinkles of powerful early limited use TMs. Another way to add immersion of being an actual Pokemon trainer would be having the player character being a move tutor for their own Pokemon whose list of teachable moves expands as you collect badges and fill out the Pokedex. Catch X amount of different fire types and have the fire type badge to be able to teach flamethrower without a TM.
Honestly, since the very first time the "faithfulness" element was mentioned in a trailer I only saw it as an excuse by the pokemon company to do as little possible to put any effort into updating the game to modern standards
We wanted HG/SS. A game that re-treads the original beats of the originals, while adding additional features and functions. Postgame legend hunting, incorporation of elements from Crystal, the completely new and novel customizable Safari Zone, We wanted OR/AS. A game that allows us to explore a familiar region with a new twist. Further elaboration on Megas (coupled with more individuals making use of Megas in the game than in XY), the new mechanic of the Eon Flute, the added story of the Delta Episode - acknowledging Emerald without compromising the original identity of the games, and creating a completely new and quite liked character in Zinnia in the process. This is what I was wanting in BD/SP. I wanted to see Sinnoh through a new light - iron out a lot of the more performance-related things, add a Delta Episode for Giratina, couple new things and maybe some new way to experience the region. While I would have appreciated something like new Megas, as well, it wasn't something I was particularly counting on, and I didn't expect Dynamax to leave Galar (and it wouldn't have fit Sinnoh even if it did). But... this wasn't it. This wasn't anything "new." The only thing that could even maybe fit that bill was the postgame area where you find all the Legendaries - and even that sort of falls flat compared to hunting for Legendaries in OR/AS or HG/SS, because there's no hunt - they're just there.
@@thekbx ye but HGSS didn't really fix some of the bigger issues (Gym Leader teams, level curve). I'm not saying they'd bad games, just not as good as some say. Are they're great? Sure, maybe, probably. Are they one of the best Pokemon games? Eeh, mostly due to the competition being mediocre.
@@thekbxAll the gen 3 kids whining about no battle frontier or too much water is exactly why the sinnoh remakes were "faithful" to begin with. I would take no battle frontier if that meant we got things like follow pokemon (that actually work right), mega evolutions, or any content from platinum version
@@SonplaysMinEcraft you're wrong. What the hell is that argument? Whining about cut content = next remakes without any add ons? We didn't even get platinum content, is that the fault of gen 4 whiners?
I think if ILCA consulted with Game Freak more and actually didn't sloppily rush through deadlines, we probably could've had a more ambitious game. They're still at least average though. They're not THAT bad.
20:02 _"(...) fans have distinct memories tied to the sights and sounds of Sinnoh"_ Oh you don't know how much. I distinctly remember how, when I stepped out of the Distortion World for the first time, it really _did_ feel like I had just stepped out of a humid cave and a fresh breeze was blowing into my face, being able to see sunlight again. It was such a wonderful feeling that I haven't been able to recreate ever since.
Personally, I think these were some of the most fun I had with Pokemon Games in recent years. I know people weren't big fans on the Chibi Style of the games, but oddly, I think it's what gave them it's charm. I know people wanted HGSS/ORAS levels of remakes, but I think these did that but the "flaws" people seen held most from enjoying the games or publicly saying they enjoyed the games. Unless a game is a full Reboot, I think they should stick to/stay as close to the original artwork of the games. And that's what they did with BDSP!
To me personally, BDSP fails as a remake because there is really no reason to play this remake over Platinum. If you want to compare it to the original diamond and pearl then yeah it is a perfectly fine remake, but that is such a lame argument. That would be like if they remade Gold and Silver again but removed all of the content from Heartgold and SoulSilver, the framework was made and loved over 10+ years prior. We can argue all day about how the new generations of pokemon are/aren't as quality as the old gens. But when a remake where all of the most difficult aspects of it were already completed over a decade beforehand, I just can't be as forgiving. This isn't even a "every previous remake brought that game up to the standards of the current generation so why couldn't this one do it to" type of argument. I was fully expecting the remakes to not be on the scale of Sword/Shield, but damn TPC gave ILCA no chance of making a remake worth a damn
The reason I play it over Platinum is because it’s connected with Home, is on the Switch so I don’t have to bother with my 3DS, and because Platinum is slow as fuck. It is torture playing any gen 4 game (this also goes for Platinum and the gen 2 remakes from that time).
@@razrv3lc100% agree. Anyone saying “Platinum is better” hasn’t played Platinum in quite a while. Despite being my favourite games as a kid gen 4 is pretty unplayable. And BDSP really isn’t as bad as people think it is. Having said that BDSP could’ve been so much better than it is and should’ve implemented more Platinum changes.
A feature to turn it off would be nice. The only option to avoid it is to use bitter heals, that stacked with other modern features is too much hassle for what would end up being average difficulty.
BDSP fail as remakes because theyre remasters that dont even attempt to modernize the old region with new pokemon and mechanics the way ORAS HGSS and FRLG did.
this is a great analysis, thank you for coming with a fresh perspective about this game! You still acknowledge that it had flaws and that it thus affected how the game came through while still being able to say that it's a Pokémon game at the end of the day. Though that begs the question: what more can Pokémon do in order to not keep their heads under water? because afaik, people are not very excited for remakes after this one
It'll still make a Morbillion dollars. Pokemon adults are like Disney adults it doesn't matter how much the company actively disdains them they'll pour money into it
And the problem with your comment is that the game never was a problem lmao. The problem is the crybabies in this fanbase that need to just find something else to shit on.
@@DarkestVoidIt's a carbon copy of the original games. Practically nothing was added and to be honest, it doesn't even look that good. Except the water. The water is cool.
"Faithful" was a sales pitch. Ultimately, the game came out completely different from the base game as it introduced modern Pokémon elements not present in the original: - forced exp share, - fairy typing, - friendship mechanics, - updated movepool, - consistency changes like removing the human/Pokémon marriage lore books. Mario RPG fits the "faithful" title because it focuses on maintaining the same experience, BD/SP does not, it expects you to experience DP differently.
Cool video, I really like the writing. A small critique is making the audio more consistent would be good. But really enjoyed the vid, hope to see your channel grow!
@@Hvaught18 I think it was the fact that you couldn't decorate your base in the underground past putting up statues that actually did it for me. I own Platinum. I'll just play that instead, you know.
@@mrsnatural2368and I’ll gladly play the original DPP while also playing BDSP whenever I want because I’m not a whineass that cries over shit in a game so much that I return them lmao.
BDSP is the second reason I bought a Switch. For years I refused to play the new Pokémon games and chose not to get a switch until Metroid was on it. Then they announced BDSP. I was happy at first but clearly annoyed with what they did with the game. At least Metroid Dread was great.
Also why did specifically ILCA make BDSP? All we had known prior was that they worked on Pokemon HOME's back end. They seem to be an outsourcing company. So why have an outsourcing company make highly anticipated remakes? It just doesn't make sense
ILCA had assisted with anime mobile titles in the past, information on them is limited because they're fairly quiet in their involvements. Their Wikipedia was empty for a long time.
Pokemon BDSP is genuinely a game i dislike. Because gen 4 is my favourite so to see we did not get the same love as gen 2 and 3 fans. They had the perfect formula snd dropped it for a graphical change and nothing really else. Also this game needed platinum features far more than the other 3 remakes prior, and even then HGSS got crystal stuff and ORAS got emerald stuff too.
Its the fact that they didn't have a formula.. ILCA has never made a game even close to this scale before, much less have they ever created a pokemon game either. There's also not really a lot of consistency between the previous remakes either.. BDSP ended up as a slightly better version of DP, but is still worse than Pt sadly
oras didnt have the emerald stuff in fact they were open about making the game way easier for the current era where older fans are now busy adults and new kids play a lot more games than before which was the best part about emerald.the challenge overall was way more challenging than gen 4 where it arguably only loses to the elite 4 of gen 4 when it comes to challenge.
@@chrisgaming8846In the main story, ORAS didn't really have Emerald stuff. But ORAS still incorporated Emerald into the game in the form of the post-game Delta Episode. The same could've been done for Giratina for BDSP, but they didn't.
@@Hanetsunewell it was about feature but sure. one question then.how so?delta ep is more closer to additional content than coming from emerald.which part exactly of that is emerald? ray was already available in the original ruby and sapphire
@@chrisgaming8846 The Emerald incorporation is basically the fact that the Delta Episode is a Rayquaza centric story. Like how Emerald's story had more focus on Rayquaza. Gameplay wise, Emerald didn't really add much that was significant before post-game aside from Magma Hideout due to its story having you go against both Team Magma and Aqua, but that's because they story for Emerald is more different from Ruby and Sapphire. That new specific location is not need if for the main game if you're gonna follow Ruby and Sapphire's story. Is what Pokemon did to incorporate Emerald into ORAS ideal in the end? Probably like 50/50 give or take. However, ORAS still incorporated Emerald's Rayquaza-centric story in some way (even if it's a post-game story), and it's more agreed upon that it's better than BDSP not incorporating any Platinum stuff (which, for the record, added some actual QoL stuff in its gameplay)
I like how the best thing you can say about BDSP was that is allowed for the ultimate version of Sinnoh via mods. Because it was made on a disgraced platform.
The term "faithful remake" really does a lot of heavy lifting for these games. They literally copied the original code, pasted it into unity, and then slightly changed a few things
Seriously. The fact that the code checks to see what GBA game you have inserted into the non-existent GBA port on the Switch is such a joke. This is literally copy/pasted code with NO editing in a lot of it.
They strayed away from the likes of FRLG and ORAS. Instead of making a definitive version they just basically made a 1 to 1 remake. Oras had mega evolution so it would be cool to see giagantamax forms (even though i didn't really like dynamax)
As someone that started with Pearl about 13 years ago, I was devastated with how hollow I felt after beating the game. It was like all of the realization of the games issues hit me all at once, and they compounded on top of each other. I realized that these gym leader changes really had no effect on my playthrough, and the only thing that did was the changes to the League. I had expected faithfulness, but not to the level that it would feel like I should have just played the originals. The second game that I played was HG, and they had a bar to reach, but they didn’t reach that bar. They didn’t even leave the ground. They tripped on their shoes before they could even jump and left something unpolished out for us to buy and play(ironic due to the names of the games referring to polish).
The BDSP games felt like the ultimate monkeys paw of a remake. Fantastic review. This was really well done, and hopefully get to see more from you in the future.
I feel I'm one of very few people who actually preferred this game over the new generation Pokémon games. It really made me feel like a kid again, and that feeling was enhanced by being an almost exact replica and being able to replay this game in HD and on the Switch was great!
@@a.x.x8184 everyone has their own oppinions. I think swsh characters looked best. I really like the region design in bdsp but only the characters look a little off but it makes sense for the scale they went for
It wasn’t even close to good. It looked like animal crossing. It was boring they left out alll the good parts and Pokédex of platinum. It was a waste of money and an insult to a good game…
The secret bases in the OG games; you can decide where you create one, can buy a lot of items and furnitures to decorate it. It's fun! ¸ The secret bases in the remakes; All you can do is place statues in them. Looks really boring plus the statues are the same color. If you could choose which material they are made of like gold, metal or gems that you found in the underground maze; that would be cool! Nope, you can't! No place for creativity and fun here ☹ The following pokemons are not well done. Most of them are slow plus they have no reactions like dancing, looking at the sea, scratching the ground or huging you. Your partners get stuck everywhere, it's weird that all of them can teleport even if the pokemons are not psychic type. I'm sure they can't find cute items for photos either or golden leaves.
When these game’s first came out I didn’t even know how much people hated them, all I heard about was stuff like pokemon following you or the elite four being reworked with actual competitive movesets

If platinum didn't exist, BDSP would be a good remake. Unfortunately, platinum does exist. The fact that they left out all of the improvements of platinum was a failure beyond comprehension. The faithful remake excuse doesn't work. There are many additional things added to the game that weren't in DP. The underground and HM removal, just to name a few. Calling it a faithful remake while adding in new features and ignoring improvements that already existed is unacceptable.
The Exp. Share problem: - In generation 1 to 4, the XP is flat and not shared. It incites you to put all your XP in the same Pokémon. If a play-through rewards you 350,000 XP, you either have 1 Pokémon level 70 (destroys everything), 2 at level 55 (can do most without facing issue), or 6 at level 40 (everything is hard). Due to this, they cannot propose "hard" battle: if you are countered by a Pokémon, you will need to grind a new Pokémon to help you out. Grinding is not fun, not even rewarding. - In generation 5, the XP is scaled and not shared. The games prevent you to over-level, yet don't really helps to have a balanced team without grind. They needed to implement Audino to alleviate the need of grind. Plus: it made leveling to 100 a chore (as the scaling prevent overleveling). - In generation 6, the XP is flat and shared. They also added XP on catch (on a 450 Pokémon Pokédex). Overleveling isn't prevented anymore, so it was Generation 1 to 4 effect on all Pokémon at once. But with a balanced team, Gamefreak can propose hard battle. - In generation 7 onward, the XP is scaled and shared. It took both Generation 5 and 6 mechanic. 6's mechanic allows to have a balanced team and to propose hard battles as consequences. 5's mechanic allows the player to not overlevel and snowball on the content. Yet, leveling to 100 is hard. Thus the candies in Dens starting in generation 8. I wonder how XY would be experienced be if it had scaled XP from 7. Would it be a challenge or more fun?
Gen 8 botched candies by offering them too early, most players farmed candies in dens instead of wild Pokémon because it was quicker. The levelling system has improved considerably, but there are two noticeable problems: 1) weak, low exp rq Pokémon who need overlevelling simply cannot, as a result Pokémon choice is limited to AVG 460-600 BST, 2) poor implementation or lack of utilisation is a major theme, Ultra Necrozma is the heart of your argument and we haven't had a difficult fight like that since...well, Ultra Necrozma. Pokémon is too focused making trainers as easy as they always have. Gen 5 was honestly the hardest Pokémon has ever gotten from exp mechanics, forcing the player to think and learn. B2W2's bug gym leader WAS NO JOKE! Same for X&Y's bug gym (since exp share wasn't available until after beating them).
i appreciate the point in regards to the lack of platinum content, and i agree that when it's brought up it's often neglecting the point of what these are remakes of, these are DP remakes not a Platinum remake, sure the delta episode exists in ORAS and despite ORAS being non faithful no emerald related content other than that was added, HGSS & FRLG did expand on the originals, yes and even though BDSP is meant to be faithful, it did expand itself in a good amount of areas, just not the way most people wanted it to, these games have alot of issues that i can't ignore but the games aren't as bad as people think.
This comment is gonna get me roasted but here goes. BDSP were actually decent, definitely not amazing but far from terrible. They accomplished exactly what they were meant to and were perfectly playable. In fact, I'd even argue that I personally would rather have the remakes over the originals (Platinum is still far better than both though, and if they had just included the extra content from it I doubt people's opinions would have been as negative as they are). That said, I understand most of the frustration but I don't consider these games to be the worst by any stretch and I would accept more remakes in their style as long as they don't completely ignore the third versions. Also I don't believe most people actually remember how flawed some parts of Sinnoh's design was (lack of fire types being the biggest problem but not the only one,) and I say that as someone who started the franchise with the originals.
I remembered Sinnoh more fondly in my mind but playing brilliant diamond kinda showed it flaws. With the addition of the topics you discussed, it didn’t help my view of gen 4 (which is fine, gen 3 forever)
I'm in the minority but having never played gen 4 back in the day BDSP was a fun playthrough especially the elite 4 and Cynthia. I dont think Ive ever had so much fun batlling NPC'S. I didn't mind the chibi style as gen 4 sprites in the overworld were short and stocky so it didnt look too out of the ordinary. Thats not to excuse the amount of missed potential with remakes that dont even include everything that generation had to offer (Platinum's Additions). Im just hoping that if they take on a gen 5 remake that they go that extra step instead of playing it as safe as possible especially now that theyve had a crack at a remake.
First, this is one of the best video essays ive seen in a while. Second, 2 years holy shi-........ I mostly agree with the video. I really liked the underground but it made its obsolete to catch wild pokemon because why would I when their are stronger and cooler ones underground, (which you get acess pretty early) I think the biggest reason I didnt enjoy this game as much is because of the pre-order rewards. You get a free mew and Jirachi so early, that they just solo carried my game. And becasue of the exp share I was always had a team ready to fight when I only really used 2. I know its pre-orders and you should expect them to get it early, but why cant they just make it an item event where once you are post-game you can talk to npc's to get these legendaries (yep a non faithful solution lmao)
Mew and Jirachi aren't pre-orders : they are available when you reach Floaroma (meaning you have to defeat Roark). I don't know about Jirachi but Mew isn't very useful if you don't have good TMs, which is the case ... until you reach Veilstone and its Mall full of ridiculous TMs.
The main thing I liked from this game over the original (besides the fairy typing, updated movesets and fast healthbar) is that you can explore the snow route in diagonal, making it leagues less tedious to traverse and find the HM
Problem is, most people’s memories of glorious Sinnoh come from Platinum and not D/P. Saying it’s “fan service” to make the legendary do something besides stand there and Cyrus be referred to as Cyrus instead of “boss” is just wrong IMO.
Finally, a video about BDSP that isn't just dogging on it for not being able to live up to the unrealistic expectations fans had built up over the years. There's a lot of nuance to this discussion, such as the developer not being Game Freak & having less experience than even them, and ORAS isnt really a standard for remakes since LGPE broke that standard immediately after. Sure, lack of a Battle Frontier and Platinum's story elements are sorely missed (Caitlin, my beloved...) but this was always gonna be a remake of Diamond and Pearl, and all that considered I think it did it's job well.
I feel like people who want remakes really want the remakes of the 3rd installment of the games not the originals most of the time. Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, B2W2. All games that improved upon the original games and added features to the already established game. So far the only remake I enjoyed was ORAS but even then it wasn’t as good as emerald especian with the lack of the battle frontier. Same with BDSP. They still made Pokémon version differences between the 3 games but now you have to get whatever they push out and now they force you get have someone to trade with which also means getting their terrible online service. That or getting the second copy for those 2-5 unobtainable Pokémon and the legendaries
If you want to grow your channel, you may want to consider speaking either a bit slower or more clearly. YT only allows us to slow down to 0.75%, which is too slow imho. Regular speed can be hard to listen to for an extended period of time tbh
This game depressed me...and I hated how affection was tied to friendship, thus absolutely breaking the late game..BDSP were very disappointing and being a Gen 4 fan I felt insulted
I will ILCA the benefit of the doubt that they tried, but given how many problems, soft locks, horrendous endgame difficulty spiking, and just the all around unevenness of everything’s placement makes it hard to find the good points really significant
We don't need truly faithful remakes, just things that can capture the spirit; Heart Gold and Soul Silver were the best remakes of the series yet wasn't fully faithful.
I didnt write eveything on my first comment so i'm gonna add some things: the Exp. Share works like since Gen 6 which means all Pokemon in your party gain Exp if you beat a wild Pokemon, another difference between BDSP and DPPT. the Steel type no longer resist Dark and Ghost which means Metagross and Bronzong are weak to said types. Spiritomb has a weakness to the Fairy type which makes it easier to beat. Togekiss is Fairy and Flying types which makes it easier to beat with physical Steel type moves.
I get not wanting to jump on the hate bandwagon, but I personally thought this review was way too lenient. Regardless of my personal views, this is a very high quality review and you should feel proud! Congrats.
I liked BDSP, granted it was the first pokemon game I played since the original diamond and pearl 😂 but it got me into playing the new games after BDSP
Diamond was my first ever Pokémon game, so Sinnoh will always hold a special place in my heart. Since playing Diamond, I have played every single Pokémon release since then, and have played all of the releases on the gameboy. These remakes didn’t do enough for me to play them over the original games, even though they were faster and fixed the HM issues. The look of the game is ok, not really my favorite style, but I can see why some people really like it. I also liked the additional challenge that the gym leaders and Elite 4 offered, and Cynthia was as good as ever. Despite those changes, the rest of the game plays the exact same. There were no special battle mechanics, no additions to the story, and your character was completely lifeless. I liked Ramadas Park, though the digging for those stones to unlock rooms was kinda dumb in my opinion. Overall, it’s not a great game by any means, but I do think it gets a little too much flack. There are other games that could be critiqued similarly.
I haven't enjoyed a Pokemon game since BDSP. Say what you want about these games but I can't stand the newer games and I really do miss how simple the old games were. I just would like them to make a game faithful to this style, whilst adding at least 2 regions worth of content to go through. Pokemon games suffer from a weak aftergame. This is the thing that I think Pokermon games could use a facelift on
I have zero trust in gamefreak. Absolutely none. So the fact ILCA added ANYTHING to BDSP was an absolute crazy thing for me. Because truthfully im very happy its a near strict faithful remake. Thats the only way to guarantee they wont mess anything up. My only complaints of these games is i wish they would used the in battle models over chibi models. I dont mind them but the in battle models are just so good. And the other problem is disabling exp share.
These games are the reason why junichi masuda does not belong in game production and now we just have to hope they will move out his little minions. I wish you would have included his responses to the issues you brought up most of them he had a horrible response in interviews on why he made the decisions he did with BDSP.
Junichi did not work on BD/SP, he greenlit the project with the Pokémon Company. He's responsible for increased story focus since Sun & Moon, which I wish wasn't the case because his new stories are washed and forced.
@@scrittle He oversaw the production of bdsp and even spent some time working out of ilkas offices. He also took credit for the decision to base bdsp on Dimond and pearl instead of platinum. He also clamed we cant have the exp share turn on and off because children might accidentally turn it off plus he never wanted a hard option for the same reason. spend some time watching his interviews and you will see how he is constantly making the game for children even though that's not the majority of the games sales for years.
I got a full odds shiny zubat within an hour of playing brilliant diamond. I also found out about being unable to transfer a spinda from Pokémon home, which is the last non mythical I need for the national dex
BDSP completely destroyed any hype for future remakes now😂 No one is excited to pay $60 for an exact copy of the original Black & White they can play on the switch, Game Freak continue to do this because youse allow it
I'm nowhere near as critical as others on HMs. I just accepted that they were part of the games and now that they're gone... I miss them. I even artificially enforced a rule on myself in this game that I had to have the move on my Pokémon to use them.
Obviously the fans arent the biggest fan of the remakes and i get it. But with cases like this, I'm trying to view it from a non fan's perspective, as it could very well be somebody's entrance into the franchise. Im banking on if any new fans would consider playing this, conveniently packaged on a newer console, versus dropping the extra cash on an old DS + Platinum. Most of us would say yes, (assuming the newer players arent interested in emulation) but at the same time, would the hassle be worth it to a first time fan?
That depends on where you find the old DS and copy of Platinum. They can actually be cheap as like 20 bucks for the game and 50 for the DS, which is already cheaper than just getting a Switch nd just barely more expensive that just getting the game. By that point it'd be smarter to just get the old DS and Platinum than to fork over the money for what's basically a glorified remaster of DP
I must gotta say that I've noticed some similarities between G2, 4 & 6. G2 & 4 have mons from their respective region that arent available until the postgame & the remakes for both of them didnt fix that either. Houndour & Slugma r still stuck in Kanto & new evolutions like Froslass or Tangrowth r available only after the credits roll. G4 & 6 desperately relies on a 3rd version to thrive.
This may be a personal thing, But I think the games really should add level caps for the player. Badges do it for traded pokemon, but I'm talking about like hard caps. I think the player should be forced to be under leveled compared to boss trainers while playing the story. The game should be teaching strategy. People may think being 10, 15 maybe even 20 levels under may be too much, but we have infinite items uses, affinity and other things to even the field. It may be seen as artificial difficulty, but it also allows enemy teams and just other trainers to have thematically relevant teams without being steamrolled.
Ironically, romhacks already do this, and you can toggle which way you want to play on or off. The fans do what Nintendon't! (it's a catchy catchphrase idc if Nintendo didn't make this)
Seeing so many enjoy the review I worked hard on makes me so happy! Please turn on subtitles if I talk too fast. Thank you so so much for watching. :)

Postgame legend hunting, incorporation of elements from Crystal, the completely new and novel customizable Safari Zone,
We wanted OR/AS.
Actually we didn't want ORAS because no Battle Frontier. Also the Mary Sue character that was Zinnia was absolutely awful. HGSS was great though.
@@thekbx Well, Rayquaza turns her into a Kebab in the manga, so I imagine you're happy with that.
Who here remembers when affection was not only optional but also had this cute head turning animation?
I kept friendship hax in check with herbal medicine.
The fact they couldn’t even include the back button on the poketch 💀
Yeah, and people defend that sh*t. Oy to the vey.
I actually really liked playing Brilliant Diamond. But yeah it could have been far better.
i feel the same!
I think if ILCA consulted with Game Freak more and actually didn't sloppily rush through deadlines, we probably could've had a more ambitious game. They're still at least average though. They're not THAT bad.
I liked these games. It was challenging enough (unless you have infernape) and I like how the health bars move faster than the originals
20:02 _"(...) fans have distinct memories tied to the sights and sounds of Sinnoh"_
Oh you don't know how much.
TWO YEARS LATER?!?! Man I need to finish my chimchar hunt so I can actually play the game
This is exactly why I never Shiny hunt. Especially on the first time playing through the game. Lesson is: save your Shiny hunting for later.
This game took the words faithful way too literal in my opinion
I like the friendship feature
It's cool knowing your pokemon will cheese you to victory if you keep using it and don't let them die
i’m glad someone enjoys the feature!
A feature to turn it off would be nice. The only option to avoid it is to use bitter heals, that stacked with other modern features is too much hassle for what would end up being average difficulty.
I personally kept the friendship boosts in check with herbal medicine.
BDSP fail as remakes because theyre remasters that dont even attempt to modernize the old region with new pokemon and mechanics the way ORAS HGSS and FRLG did.
I enjoyed the game when I played it. I did have fun I just was disappointed with how little was added, made me just want to play a fan made rom.
Two words, my friend: Luminescent Platinum. You're welcome.
Just play Platinum
this is a great analysis, thank you for coming with a fresh perspective about this game! You still acknowledge that it had flaws and that it thus affected how the game came through while still being able to say that it's a Pokémon game at the end of the day.
Though that begs the question: what more can Pokémon do in order to not keep their heads under water? because afaik, people are not very excited for remakes after this one
i really appreciate it, thank you so much!
It'll still make a Morbillion dollars. Pokemon adults are like Disney adults it doesn't matter how much the company actively disdains them they'll pour money into it

The problem isn't that it was faithful.
The problem is that it was TOO faithful
And the problem with your comment is that the game never was a problem lmao. The problem is the crybabies in this fanbase that need to just find something else to shit on.
@@DarkestVoidIt's a carbon copy of the original games.
Practically nothing was added and to be honest, it doesn't even look that good.
Except the water. The water is cool.
@@DarkestVoidthe game is so faithful that the same glitches were present in both the originals and remakes
@@grmthmpsn except the Cute Charm glitch
"Faithful" was a sales pitch. Ultimately, the game came out completely different from the base game as it introduced modern Pokémon elements not present in the original:
- forced exp share,
- fairy typing,
- friendship mechanics,
- updated movepool,
- consistency changes like removing the human/Pokémon marriage lore books.

Probably cause anybody with an actual ability to make games would outshine gamefreak and make people want competent devs to develop mainline games
ILCA had assisted with anime mobile titles in the past, information on them is limited because they're fairly quiet in their involvements. Their Wikipedia was empty for a long time.
I hate the movement in bdsp, its like every single wall in the game is covered in layers of sticky honey
Yeah it’s awful. Why they let you walk omnidirectional, but still have a grid system will always baffle me
Pokemon BDSP is genuinely a game i dislike.
I mean, it allowed for the creation of Luminescent Platinum, so there's that.
I like how the best thing you can say about BDSP was that is allowed for the ultimate version of Sinnoh via mods. Because it was made on a disgraced platform.
I see parts of these games that I really like, getting rid of HMs and harder rematches, but every step forward it takes it takes like 3 steps back
I've bought it recently on black Friday for 20$ at Walmart. Really enjoyed it.
I think BDSP is cute. Groundbreaking? Nope, Enjoyable? Yes
I agree that BDSP is cute, in the sense of aesthetics and in the sense of “it thought it was clever”.
The term "faithful remake" really does a lot of heavy lifting for these games. They literally copied the original code, pasted it into unity, and then slightly changed a few things
It really is a crutch to justify a low effort rehash. Our standards are already low enough as is, but this failed to meet even those expectations.
Wait how was it 2 years ago????
i didn’t believe it either
Platinum was my first pokemon game so I can’t see that as anything but the definitive version
BD was my first. I enjoyed it for what it was, but this video (and the comments) makes me feel like I missed out with the original
I feel I'm one of very few people who actually preferred this game over the new generation Pokémon games. It really made me feel like a kid again, and that feeling was enhanced by being an almost exact replica and being able to replay this game in HD and on the Switch was great!
Oh yeah for sure. I feel the same way about the game
That’s just called nostalgia no way you’d have prefer this and not a Let’s go artsyle type of Sinnoh remake 💀

Two years? Man, how time flies...
It wasn’t even close to good. It looked like animal crossing. It was boring they left out alll the good parts and Pokédex of platinum. It was a waste of money and an insult to a good game…
They even butchered the contests 😞
exactly brilliant diamond and shining pearl are the only remakes that are disliked by the fans zero excuse for a 2021 game
It’s sad how another Kanto revisit got more love and effort put into them while gen 4 one of the most popular gens gets shafted on.
Yup. 100% agree. I didn't even bother finishing it. Stopped at the 5th badge.
That's kinda rude
To animal crossing, people actually like that one.
The secret bases in the OG games; you can decide where you create one, can buy a lot of items and furnitures to decorate it. It's fun! ¸
The secret bases in the remakes; All you can do is place statues in them. Looks really boring plus the statues are the same color. If you could choose which material they are made of like gold, metal or gems that you found in the underground maze; that would be cool! Nope, you can't! No place for creativity and fun here ☹
The following pokemons are not well done.
The devs really borrowed ideas from HG/SS and somehow implemented them BADLY! How can you mess up followable Pokémon? How?
When these game’s first came out I didn’t even know how much people hated them, all I heard about was stuff like pokemon following you or the elite four being reworked with actual competitive movesets
Finally someone who likes this version of the game and I’ve been just so excited to talk about it but anytime I see on UA-cam anything about this version of the game is just always them ripping on this game and this game is what made me come back to Pokémon last time I played a Pokémon game was Pokémon black on the DS I think
The Exp. Share problem:
- In generation 1 to 4, the XP is flat and not shared.
The levelling system has improved considerably, but there are two noticeable problems:
1) weak, low exp rq Pokémon who need overlevelling simply cannot, as a result Pokémon choice is limited to AVG 460-600 BST,
2) poor implementation or lack of utilisation is a major theme, Ultra Necrozma is the heart of your argument and we haven't had a difficult fight like that since...well, Ultra Necrozma.
"Grinding is not fun"
Please don't make the ridiculous mistake of pretending fun is objective. Lots of people enjoy grinding in rpg's.
Fair enough. In the future, I'll say the majority of people don't enjoy grinding.
"Why didn't they remake Platinum?"
Because some idiots will buy both Bad Diamond and Shitty Pearl. Drayano hacks all the way
This comment is gonna get me roasted but here goes.
With the addition of the topics you discussed, it didn’t help my view of gen 4 (which is fine, gen 3 forever)
gen 3 is gold
What flaws are that? Because Gen 4 is one of the absolute best. 2nd only to Gen 2.
I am playing through the first time right now. I played the originals. I am enjoying it but imo platinum was a far better game than these remakes
I would like them a lot more if they actually were faithful and didn't have forced exp share and a totally different ridiculously difficult E4
If anything, they should have been less faithful. The main issue is that they were too faithful to already bad pokemon games
I really liked the underground but it made its obsolete to catch wild pokemon because why would I when their are stronger and cooler ones underground, (which you get acess pretty early)
I think the biggest reason I didnt enjoy this game as much is because of the pre-order rewards.
I don't know about Jirachi but Mew isn't very useful if you don't have good TMs, which is the case ... until you reach Veilstone and its Mall full of ridiculous TMs.
thanks so much!
I replay Pokemon Platinum recently, and exp share makes things too easy in Pokemon BDSP.
I enjoyed my play through recently. Took me back to a style of Pokémon we don’t really get anymore.
Damn good video. First time in a while I finished a video longer than like 15 minutes lol
Thanks man!
I love BDSP, only thing I was really missing was the Battle Frontier from Platinum. Other than that I loved everything else.
Why the expectations of keeping the same standards of the previous games, and the game not looking like a My Sims game for the Wii, were unrealistic?

ORAS is goated. Between Megas, Hoopa Rifts/soaring, and the Delta Episode (Deoxyxs is my favorite mythical) makes it a better remake than HGSS.
Too bad Ruby and Sapphire came out about a year before I was born…
It's refreshing to see a more positive take on a controversial title in the series every once in a while.
You cant call BDSP faithful remakes when you have the Fairy type, character customization, affection in them which didnt exist in DPPT.
True
Exactly I’ve been tryna tell ppl that
🤓
I didnt write eveything on my first comment so i'm gonna add some things:
the Exp.
“How *Bad* Was BDSP?”
Huh has it been two years already.
Still, the ORAS design and Platinum content should have been featured.

Regardless of my personal views, this is a very high quality review and you should feel proud! Congrats.
I liked BDSP, granted it was the first pokemon game I played since the original diamond and pearl 😂 but it got me into playing the new games after BDSP
Platinum is just overall the better game and in that regard bdsp is a huge failure its not a upgrade or even a sidegrade its a downgrade
There are other games that could be critiqued similarly.
leaving auto save on was something only a noob would do
I haven't enjoyed a Pokemon game since BDSP.
I regret spending money on this game so much. They really are inexcusably low quality.
I tried looking for Junichi interviews when I made that reply but all I got was algo-vomit. Thanks for the information, I'll dig harder next time.
I got a full odds shiny zubat within an hour of playing brilliant diamond. I also found out about being unable to transfer a spinda from Pokémon home, which is the last non mythical I need for the national dex
BDSP completely destroyed any hype for future remakes now😂
No one is excited to pay $60 for an exact copy of the original Black & White they can play on the switch, Game Freak continue to do this because youse allow it
TWO YEARS? ALREADY?!?!?!
I'm nowhere near as critical as others on HMs. I just accepted that they were part of the games and now that they're gone... I miss them. I even artificially enforced a rule on myself in this game that I had to have the move on my Pokémon to use them.
I didn’t play the original, but I though BDSP was ok. After I beat the champion & elite 4, I stopped playing.
@@caiusdrakegaming8087 I should have mentioned that I'm assuming they already owned a switch, my bad. But I get what you mean.
Entrance into the franchise? More like the gates to hell.
I liked how how heart gold and soul silver where both crystal remakes
I must gotta say that I've noticed some similarities between G2, 4 & 6. G2 & 4 have mons from their respective region that arent available until the postgame & the remakes for both of them didnt fix that either. Houndour & Slugma r still stuck in Kanto & new evolutions like Froslass or Tangrowth r available only after the credits roll. G4 & 6 desperately relies on a 3rd version to thrive.
The difference is that Gen 4 got the third version while Gen 6 did not. All because they rushed out Gen 7 for the series's anniversary.
@@robertlupa8273 the point is it needs it, but never got 1 unlike Gen 4.
@@lipika2841 Exactly gen 6 was just another Sinnoh but imo it was better. Team flare > Team galactic.
I loved BDSP but a lot of the complaints in this review I disagree with.
This may be a personal thing,
But I think the games really should add level caps for the player.
(it's a catchy catchphrase idc if Nintendo didn't make this)
cool video mayne, here before the blow up lol
Thanks man!
it is so faithful that the original code was translated to unity.
