This game brings back memories. It just took the basics of Mario 64 and went wild with it, up to the point that I wouldn't even consider it a port. It's like a whole different game. The concept of having to find hidden stages to unlock other characters, these characters having different powers and abilities (with Yoshi being so unique that playing as him feels nothing like the others at all) and being able to switch between them on the fly was just... insane. I find this remake a really interesting part of Nintendo history. A game meant to demonstrate the analog stick remade for a system with only a d-pad. And the fact this game was a demonstration of what the DS could do. There are completely different people who grew up with their own version. We really need a Mario 64 definitive edition. A version that has the better controls and momentum of the original but with the new content and improved camera control from DS. A lot of what determines what you think is the better will be which version you grew with and what you value in your Mario game more.
@JTE96 the camera is rough in both, yes, but at least DS gave you better control of it. You have more options to change which way it faces. Granted, it might be better to revamp the camera entirely until its up to modern standards, but DS in my opinion was better with camera control.

that section halfway through where it's straight up wario being bullied is one of my favourite things of all time "gotta use his stubby little arms to swim back to the surface"
This was my first 3D Mario game and I loved it. I got stuck one day when I was 7 and while I was moving all my ds games upstairs, I dropped some into the basement and to this day I cannot find my copy of mario 64 DS. I never got to play as Wario.
For the longest time I didn't realize this was the game i had played as a kid all the time. I remembered being bad at the minigames and never really progressing through the game, and because i never progressed i years later didn't recognize the game when i saw the original version. Suddenly finding out through a video that i apparently owned this game and this was where those minigames came from was quite the experience lol
I think I had this game (my mom probably got it to play, she liked to play Mario on my DS and I was happy to provide the console for her) but the only thing I ever played were the mini games. I’m sure by scouring my room/house I could find the copy, and re-experience baby’s first poker game. Edit: oh btw to note I turn 19 late March :,)
New Super Mario Bros was my preferred Mario game. I only played SM64DS for the minigames because it was hard for me. NSMB was the first game I ever 100% completed. I still greatly prefer the way the controls feel and the level design compared to the kinda weird feeling NSMB Wii.
Very glad that chat gaslighting Dan (and each other) into believing cosmic brownies are weed brownies made it into the video. Highlight of my week that was.
THIS is true nostalgia for me. I never owned a N64, but I played the hell out of my DS, and this was one of my favorite games. I especially remember it for the minigames, BUT I remember my child self getting their hands on an ActionReplay. I screwed around with the cheats for this game so much that it fundamentally broke the game. You could toggle a "fly" feature, which I absolutely loved, but the problem was that it had a very high chance of breaking mid "flight", so you would jump and then never be able to land, just float further and further off the map and have to start the level all over. Anyway, I have so many fond memories of this game, I can't wait to watch the whole playthrough!
Growing up on this and Phantom Hourglass as my first Mario and Zeldas respectively was an experience lol, going to those franchise's other games and having to adjust to buttons was super weird. (It's not likely but man I'd kill for a RT Phantom Hourglass playthrough lmao)
To be honest. I'm quite happy long RT videos are coming out again. This may sound stupid, but i'm really not doing so hot right now, and they help a lot. Thank you.
He isn’t a human anymore, he’s a Vtuber now. He willingly cheats death and escapes the mortal plane into the synthetic one Otherwise, he is pretty human compared to a lot of UA-camrs
I think its because he doesnt project a fake personality, mind you that doesnt mean we know the TRUE RT but instead we get an RT who's just looking to vibe and play games while chatting to peeps who feel the same (And mind you TRUE RT means like how the TRUE you is how you talk to your family and junk not like hidden secrets)
The definitive best version of this game, it's a shame it's way less known version too. Thanks for playing through and helping us reminisce our childhoods Dan
The pure joy I had when I saw this in my recommended. This was my childhood experience of Mario 64, and poker Luigi will forever be my start into gambling
That end credits song is so nostalgic (and kinda makes me feel sad), but really nice when it's going through the photos of all the different levels. Also the cake at the end 😭
7:10 Its so funny how I didn't know this game was Super Mario 64 because I remember playing this as a kid and thinking it was mario party ds since I have more memories of that game. Guess I had mario 64 as a kid lol
Until i saw mario 64 speedruns, i had no idea that there was a version of this game where you _didn't_ start as Yoshi. This is the best version of the game
As someone who never actually played a Mario game as a kid, I got this one a couple years ago from a local used game shop and had a blast! This and Kirby Superstar Saga kept me sane between long work hours during pandemic!
i remember spending hours just swimming around the castle grounds when i was 6 or 7. i was never very good at mario, so i always just watch my sister play it. this and your mario galaxy videos are so nostalgic for me, so thank you rtgamedad :)
Dan, when I went to school, there were weird horse girls who would "gallop" to class and cst girls who would hiss at you or purr at you. It's absolutely believable that there are kids who growl at each other.
Man I just learned I am 1 month older than RT, and holy shit has he done way more with his life than I have. I honestly wonder if I will ever achieve anything close to him with the remainder of my life.
You can start by lessening your wondering and start dling some stuff. Could be little, could be huge. What matters is you keep doing stuff. Everyone does things at different rates.
Remember that Alan Rickman didn't get his big break until his 40s. Also remember that everyone's definition of success is different. What makes you happy? What would you like to do? Find that goal and then the best ways to achieve it. And don't compare yourself to others. That's the best way to get so down that you accomplish nothing.
Life isn't a race, just focus on what makes YOU happy. I'm 19 and already feel like life has passed me by- but then I remember that I've had a different life compared to others. I'm doing much better than I was 5 years ago. You are the only person you should compare yourself to.
@HazeEmry @AinuLaire @nostressjustcress-fr1uv Thank you all for the kind and encouraging words. I've been going through a tough time lately, and tend to have my negative thoughts leak out. Haze you are right I should start trying to do stuff, but I've been so defeated lately from work and general life. It's hard to find the energy and motivation to throw myself at something. I need to try better to do so though. Ainu, that is one of my biggest obstacles. I constantly compare myself to others. Doesn't matter if it is UA-camrs, Streamers, my brothers, my coworkers. I constantly look around and see my flaws compared to their success. It's something I need to improve on. Nostress I should look at it that way. 5 years ago I was homeless, and last year I got out of it. That is something I should focus more on.
I absolutely loved playing this game as a kid! My greatest memory from it was being unable to beat it because the controls were so bad for the Bowser fights.
16:00 - 16:10 I can't not give the editor* props for that transition. Flawless. (I'm aware of her name, but can't easily type it because of the accent on the e at the end)
My favorite memory of this game growing up was starting the main world - getting confused on how to enter the doors - giving up - and then just playing the mini games. I got so good at them. That’s MY Mario 64
Hey Dan, you literally released this video as I was celebrating my 21st birthday! From what I understand of Europe (admittedly not a lot) this isn’t anything too special, but in the states this is the most special birthday in your life. SM64 for the DS is up there for one of my favorite games of all times, and I couldn’t think of a better Birthday present than seeing this from you. Cheers! And thank you for the amazing unintended gift! I hope you have an amazing 2024
6:44 this is exactly what I did. My parents bought this for me way back when, but I was never good at Mario games and I was like 8. So i just played the minigames with my sister. My sister also has new super mario bros, which has some of the minigames too.
As someone that could never do too well at this game cause super autistic and struggled with mobility in my hands, but played this version so much as a kid, this is so nice to watch. A lot of stars seemed too obscure for my mimd to figure out that even now I have to look up a guide and I just cannot play well, on any version of the game cause of joint mobility and my hands not always responding the way I want. So just watching people complete games I can't is so cathartic to me. It's just relaxing. Definitely gonna watch the archived streams after this. Maybe will bust out my own game too. Fully agree this is the best version of the game and anyone else is wrong. (/lh)
I remember visiting family while I was a kid and accidentally stealing this game. I 100%ed it and tried returning it, but my cousins already got a new copy. And that's how I got one of my favorite games of all time.
ive fallen asleep watching this video so many times that it feels like every time i click on to it i end up at a different part i haven't seen yet. this video is a blessing for my Needing Noise To Fall Asleep brain
RT, I literally just turned 18 a few days ago, this game is older than ME by 2 YEARS, so no, I don't remember playing every version of Mario 64 throughout the ages
I was born the same year as this game but it was my childhood! It was my first game on my 3DS when I was 7. The water levels though terrified me as a kid.
i apparently played this version as a kid when it came out and as an adult was so confused watching the regular 64 original version being played i thought i was just crazy lol
I think the craziest realization that I had while watching this video is that when I was younger I actually had this game, I just played the casino and nothing else.
I found your content like maybe 6 months after you started doing variety content and have gone through almost the entirety of my bachelor's degree since. It is wild to be almost the same age as you were when you started making variety content.
I was 2 when this came out. I turn 22 this year. Jesus Christ. I remember finding this when I was like 7 or 8, and being like “wow, I love this game” then lost it. Now I own a N64 with the original version of Super Mario 64. It’s crazy
The moment I saw this in my recommended I had to watch and was not disappointed. I swear, this was just, "I agree", the video. The minigames ate so much time for me and when I finally, a couple years later, found out the original didn't have Luigi, Wario, Yoshi and plenty more in it, I was stunned. I never played the original Mario 64, but did get to play the DS version an insane amount. It got to be the first Mario game I ever played, and one I hold close to my heart. I am so happy I was not the only one that had the same thoughts and love for this game as you did. Thank you for playing this and reminding me to one day get a new copy, having lost my old one years ago from being terrible with misplacing things.
Despite having Jen Taylor as Peach at the time, I’m still impressed they got Leslie Swan to re-record her audio here. And she voiced Peach one last time in Super Paper Mario. She was a part of NoA’s localization crew, though idk if she still works there.
Love how Nintendo casually drops a full remake of an N64 game on DS and just never did that again for the system. Wouldn't see anything else until the 3DS. Huge missed opportunity to flex the technology imo.
I was just about the right age that I played both versions when I was a kid; in fact, the original Mario 64 was possibly the first video game I ever played. This version does suffer from the loss of analog controls, which is unfortunate because the movement is a lot of what made the original so great. In fairness, however, I think they did a great job translating the game to the new hardware, and the extra content makes it feel more like a new game than a scaled-down port.
GOD seeing you play this sent my flying back to when i was in like 5th grade playing this at like midnight and shutting the DS only for Mario to give me away by saying 'Bye Bye!" I have gotten into trouble many times cos the mustachio'd plumber. Good times.
I absolutely love this game I remember late nights at my childhood best friend’s house playing EVERYTHING in this game it was so nostalgic for me watching this video all the sounds are so iconic and the music is just amazing love ya Dan keep it up
Imagine if this was made for the 3DS instead. Man it would've been insane. If you've ever played Super Mario 3D Land, that aesthetic and definition, but this game. I'll never not be a little salty that it never happened.
This is unlocking so many childhood memories, it's amazing how nostalgia works. I don't remember watching my brother play this, but I must have because I remember all the mini games and even yoshi with Mario's hat on the map screen. Actually crazy
The "Uncle, Uncle" at 1:18:17 sounds very much like a Japanese translation thing to me. The translation for Japanese word Oji(-san) is "uncle". HOWEVER, it is also commonly used as "mister" (when talking to strangers/ adult men). So here, it is ment as a "mister, please just leave me alone"
Holy shit this is such a generational/regional divide. "Crying Uncle" was a fairly common idiom in use for admitting defeat at the time of the original 64, and was still somewhat in use by the time 64 DS came out.
Wow, that is amazing. I have never in my life, in no language I'm familiar with, heard of this phrase. But then again, I played this game around 2009 I wanna say. So I was definitely not around for the OG N64 to know the terms of that time.
I can also confirm that the use of "Uncle" is just a way of saying "Mercy" (as in, "have mercy on me"). I'm on the east coast of the USA if that helps narrow down any sort of regional dialect/phrases.
Midwest USA. The phrase "Uncle" is so ubiquitous here that my older brothers would force me to call it out while play-wrestling when we were very young.
Fun fact: Even though she'd already been replaced by Jen Taylor, they still took the time to bring Leslie Swan (Peach's actress from the original Super Mario 64) back into the studio to record new voice lines. I know, she was already working for them as a Localization Manager at Nintendo of America, so it was likely very easy to get her. But still, the fact that they didn't have the new actress record the lines instead really goes to show how much care they put into this game.
“This game was released in 2004, which means it’s almost 20 years old!” Me, who was born the same year that this game came out and grew up playing it in my DSiXL: *oh…*

Okay. but no one ever mentions this: Anytime anyone plays their animation for taking their hat off and their icon is on the minimap, their face marker will lose the hat for a moment while they do so.

This was my first 3D Mario game and I loved it. I got stuck one day when I was 7 and while I was moving all my ds games upstairs, I dropped some into the basement and to this day I cannot find my copy of mario 64 DS. I never got to play as Wario.
I could never beat bowser in the fire sea because I didn't read what bowser said on how to beat him
For the longest time I didn't realize this was the game i had played as a kid all the time. I remembered being bad at the minigames and never really progressing through the game, and because i never progressed i years later didn't recognize the game when i saw the original version. Suddenly finding out through a video that i apparently owned this game and this was where those minigames came from was quite the experience lol
As someone who was born 2004 and grew up playing this game, I still own it from my DS days!
I am turning 20 this year, painful agony
As someone who also grew up playing this game and just turned 20 a few months ago I can relate to this painful agony you speak of.
Same here brother. We must remain strong
New Super Mario Bros was my preferred Mario game. I only played SM64DS for the minigames because it was hard for me.
NSMB was the first game I ever 100% completed. I still greatly prefer the way the controls feel and the level design compared to the kinda weird feeling NSMB Wii.
huge fan of how about halfway through this playthrough it just turns into The Wario Experience.
Very glad that chat gaslighting Dan (and each other) into believing cosmic brownies are weed brownies made it into the video. Highlight of my week that was.
WAIT they aren’t???
@@bonessaiNo. They're a prepackaged brownie with rainbow chips produced by Little Debbie. They are not weed brownies
I too grew up with this game, and was unaware of the original version for years. Moving around with the touch screen felt downright NORMAL.
Man even as a kid I rejected touch screen controls
Why did Nintendo push them so much
Growing up on this and Phantom Hourglass as my first Mario and Zeldas respectively was an experience lol, going to those franchise's other games and having to adjust to buttons was super weird.
(It's not likely but man I'd kill for a RT Phantom Hourglass playthrough lmao)
To be honest. I'm quite happy long RT videos are coming out again. This may sound stupid, but i'm really not doing so hot right now, and they help a lot. Thank you.
i hope you’re doing better!
@@saucykenn2971 it's a long road, but it's going up. Thank you for your kindness.
This video makes me realize how much more human Dan is compared to a lot of UA-camrs and streamers
He isn’t a human anymore, he’s a Vtuber now. He willingly cheats death and escapes the mortal plane into the synthetic one
Otherwise, he is pretty human compared to a lot of UA-camrs
@@hungarianpirate1309 Escape the flesh.
It's what makes him my favorite. His videos are very chill, and it's nice to just relax while watching or just listening to him talk to chat
He's so kind and friendly, you can tell even when he's doing a bit, it's why he's one of my favourites
I think its because he doesnt project a fake personality, mind you that doesnt mean we know the TRUE RT but instead we get an RT who's just looking to vibe and play games while chatting to peeps who feel the same
(And mind you TRUE RT means like how the TRUE you is how you talk to your family and junk not like hidden secrets)
Every character in this game lives in mortal terror of being eaten by Yoshi.
Truly his reign is wicked.
Really hope to see Dan play all of Phantom Hourglass, and all of Spirit Tracks one day.
I read that as Pokémon Hourglass. I'm gong back to bed
23:48 Ok so why did the Toad with the cold make me laugh so hard it almost gave me an asthma attack? xD
I’m dying lmao
Until i saw mario 64 speedruns, i had no idea that there was a version of this game where you _didn't_ start as Yoshi. This is the best version of the game
As someone who never actually played a Mario game as a kid, I got this one a couple years ago from a local used game shop and had a blast! This and Kirby Superstar Saga kept me sane between long work hours during pandemic!
53:48 Luigi is actually the Bravest Character in Mario. He is Afraid yet he constantly faces his fears.
I actually bought a used copy of this game to play on my 3DS and now my New 2DS XL. It was way harder than I expected.
finally.
we can gamble with luigi.
i remember spending hours just swimming around the castle grounds when i was 6 or 7. i was never very good at mario, so i always just watch my sister play it. this and your mario galaxy videos are so nostalgic for me, so thank you rtgamedad :)
Dan, when I went to school, there were weird horse girls who would "gallop" to class and cst girls who would hiss at you or purr at you. It's absolutely believable that there are kids who growl at each other.
my entire world shattered when rt said he didnt know what a cosmic brownie is
Holy hell, aint this a throwback to my childhood. I remember the first feeling i got when i 100% it back then.
I like how RT explains the game to us like we are a kid who’s never seen Mario before
Man I just learned I am 1 month older than RT, and holy shit has he done way more with his life than I have.
@HazeEmry @AinuLaire @nostressjustcress-fr1uv
Thank you all for the kind and encouraging words.
He does nothing but play games and talk to himself all day. We love him, but we can't say that he's done "a lot" with his life. God bless im
your "lets play all of ___" series is some of my favorite content on this site, great way to burn a couple hours every time. love your stuff bro :)
1:36:17 *Twitch suffered so UA-cam could laugh.*
Disney purchased Toad and infused him with The Mouse. This video showcases his last fight to maintain his original self.
I absolutely loved playing this game as a kid! My greatest memory from it was being unable to beat it because the controls were so bad for the Bowser fights.
The fact that he casually mentioned that the game came out in 2004 made me feel really fuckin old. Thanks Dan for reminding me of my mortality!
16:00 - 16:10
I can't not give the editor* props for that transition. Flawless.
(I'm aware of her name, but can't easily type it because of the accent on the e at the end)
That's and easy edit to do lol XD
I see bi pride Ophelia I simply must voice approval
(é) or (è)?
Dunno about names but Americans often ignore accents and tildas and It's still considered grammatically correct
Hello fellow bi
My favorite memory of this game growing up was starting the main world - getting confused on how to enter the doors - giving up - and then just playing the mini games. I got so good at them. That’s MY Mario 64
This brings me back to my childhood! 😭❤️
(/lh)
I always loved the fact u could play Mario, Luigi, Wario AND Yoshi! It was a true gift to my childhood.
it's so freaking funny to me that every boss explicitly tells you how to beat them. i know this is a game for kids but it's still super funny
I AUDIBLY gasped when I saw this in my feed. RTGame and Mario 64, two of my favorite things in one video! 😭❤
I was born the same year as this game but it was my childhood! It was my first game on my 3DS when I was 7. The water levels though terrified me as a kid.
i apparently played this version as a kid when it came out and as an adult was so confused watching the regular 64 original version being played i thought i was just crazy lol
I actually played this one on my 3ds. Because of that, despite it was jerky, i had a much better time with the controls than others.
It’s crazy
RT is finally playing the best version of Suoer Mario 64. I'm so happy 😄
The first game I ever got for my ds. This will always hold a special place in my heart
This game was so much fun... but yeah the existential dread hits when you realize how old it is 😂
It's more than twice as old now as the original Mario 64 was when the DS game came out
The moment I saw this in my recommended I had to watch and was not disappointed.
I’d love to see RT play The Phantom Hourglass actually, same with spirit tracks
Good times.
M64DS is the only M64 game which i fully completed, I even got 9999 coins in the poker minigame. Truly one of my favorite games of all time!
YOU'VE MAMAD YOUR LAST MIA
Oh my God, I remember dumping so many hours into this game. So much nostalgia just from seeing the thumbnail, can’t wait to watch the video!
This was the first game i 100% i was so proud as a kid
I absolutely love this game I remember late nights at my childhood best friend’s house playing EVERYTHING in this game it was so nostalgic for me watching this video all the sounds are so iconic and the music is just amazing love ya Dan keep it up
i forget daniel's actually good at games
Imagine if this was made for the 3DS instead.
Man it would've been insane.
If you've ever played Super Mario 3D Land, that aesthetic and definition, but this game.
I'll never not be a little salty that it never happened.
good to have you back RT, hope your holidays were good :) thank you and your editors for their hard work getting these longform videos out so often!!
Dan the kids who used to growl at people in highschool are absolutely real lmao
The only problem with it, is the fact it only has 8 directions for movement. This would be better on the 3ds with the circle pad
One of my friends in high school used to growl and hiss at people until she graduated.
FINALLY ANOTHER PERSON PLAYING THE BETTER VERSION OF MARIO 64
Fun fact: Even though she'd already been replaced by Jen Taylor, they still took the time to bring Leslie Swan (Peach's actress from the original Super Mario 64) back into the studio to record new voice lines.
I know, she was already working for them as a Localization Manager at Nintendo of America, so it was likely very easy to get her. But still, the fact that they didn't have the new actress record the lines instead really goes to show how much care they put into this game.
Truly the peak of Nintendo Games
“This game was released in 2004, which means it’s almost 20 years old!”
Me, who was born the same year that this game came out and grew up playing it in my DSiXL: *oh…*
