  • Here we have two high school track athletes with the goal to eventually break 2 minutes in the 800 meter dash. This track workout involves them running three 300m dashes with the emphasis on hitting 30 seconds at the 200m mark. If they can consistently hit the 30 sec time at the 200m dash mark, then that shows that they are capable of running 2 flat pace.

As someone who runs well under 2:00, would not recommend trying to negative or flat split the 800. The best way, and what any collegiate coach would say, is to run an 800 with a positive split, meaning run the first lap faster than the second. Ideally should be about 2-3 seconds slower the second lap. But everyone is different.

During the off-season In HS my coach would make all the mid distance runners (800-1600) load up on miles before we started doing any speed work before track season started. Lots of long runs with hills, even swimming on certain days For laps. Once season started we would do 400 repeats, 800 treats, 500s, 300s etc. but we were conditioned enough to run intervals because of the offseason. We also didn’t neglect weight training either. Middle distance runners gotta have a strong base and a balance in my opinion!

these are not 800 meter runners. And if they are, get them ouf the track and in the trails just getting their areobic base up because the slipping in a short workout like this means they are not areobicly fit enough

I'ma distance runner, so my best advice is aerobic development! Maybe you shouldn't run miles and miles and miles like a marathon runner but doing some stuff at like mile or 5k pace would help with the fatigue I think!

I’m a sprinter/pole vaulter and I’m thinking about changing from sprints over to the 800. All I know is that I can run a 39.16 300m indoors.
Compared to my teammates I have the best acceleration but my top speed lets me down. But I can also hold my sprint for a long time and that allows me to beat people faster than me in the 300. I want to push myself and try the 800, it’s a lot different but I think with training I could be better.

You don't need a stopwatch min 3:59!! That's why you have a coach so he can tell you what your times are each lap and stop worrying about your watch.... loosing seconds by looking down and not focusing on the main objective of the workout.

Your 200m marks were way off, they were starting at the 400m start and not cutting in, the 400m start is on a three turn stagger. By starting and staying in the middle of the track their 200m mark is about 15 meters past where you called it at. This is basic track knowledge, I don’t think you’re necessarily in a place to coach adequately.

Rashad I ran my first competitive 400m race yesterday and was 3 seconds of breaking 1 min I won it because at the start I stayed back in the first 25 to 50 m starting pacing more at 150 and at 200m I passed the other 3 dudes and it was a head on woth me and one guy and I could've passed him at the 250 mark but he had longer legs and I'm shorter so he would've caught up and gassed me so a stayed at a pace then at the last bend sprinted hard and got a 25m lead on him and won

I saw Sameer run the 800 this Thursday as we went vs his school and he ran a 2:14. He did run a 2:09 season opener his junior year before the pandemic.

Anil Anvi it really depends on your fitness right now, if you have good endurance work on speed and if you have good speed work on endurance (this is coming from a distance runner)

Rashad i'm thirteen and in the eighth grade and we are running to the pole and back and the coach sees I'm falling behind and I do not want this. I came to the conclusion that my start off if horrible I push off slow and then build speed while my opponents are already at the speed I desire which puts me in last. Any tips on how to get a stronger more effective start off without blocks?

Martin Nunez once. You do it consistently over the weeks and that makes the difference. Doing it multiple times in one meet makes no difference

as you keep speaking on this video, I keep finding things I don't agree with. YOU do not need a Watch to train. Most pro athletes don't run with a Watch. Looking at your watch during a workout slows you down.
