      @@sebbo9696 The Point of rallying is on the day before the rally you drive the stages at road speed, make notes how tight the corners are (e.g. "3 left" is tighter than "5 right"), how much distance is between them, where are jumps, compressions, potholes, rocks, etc. and then when you drive vs the clock your co-driver reads those notes so you can anticipate the road beyond your visual range and chose your line and speed accordingly, so your are much faster than driving just on sight how he does in the videos

    I kind of wish you'd done this differently. Maybe like 2-5 runs on 1 or 2 stages, but do a 'final' on a completely different stage where you don't know what's coming - like a proper rally. Maybe do a recce on the final stage before the run. I know you'd all probably end up crashing, but would be interesting to see if James could pull it off.

      @usefulidiot21 5 місяців тому +7

      That's not actually how real rallying works at the top level. In the WRC, drivers get 2 passes through each stage for recce before the race. Then they watch their replays and refine the pacenotes until they're happy with them. And then they generally run each stage twice during the rally. So there isn't a case where they don't know what's coming, unless it's lower levels of rally where drivers don't do a recce.

      no, there is no gear 6 on all cars and no need to put 1st gear. the number is just an angle of the wheel you need to follow the road, how steep is the corner, there is no indication of speed on the notes.

    • @SleepyPantsSimRacing
      @SleepyPantsSimRacing 5 місяців тому +1

      @ahgdipsd not entirely accurate. It's 100 percent on whoever made the pacenotes. There are many different systems used and many make thier own systems. But as a general rule it's angle based in games because there are so many different cars to drive.
      Using the gear number will safely get you through a stage most of the time but as you get better and more confident the numbers are more of a tool to give you an idea of what a corner will be rather than a crutch.

    Successful rally is all the co-driver, thats why you don't rely on your gut, you rely on the pace notes. The way I approach it is to realize the co-driver is the brain, does the thinking, and the driver is just hands and feet, operates the car. Once the driver has to think you are off a cliff or in a tree. Group B drivers used to famously say "the car is faster than I can think". That being said, there only so many stages and after a few years in their career rally drivers tend to remember stages that get used often, but still rely on the pace notes for the full speed runs though.

    This has actually been one of the most surprising racing game releases in recent memory for me, on one hand just because it's not broken at launch like another big release this year.
    I didn't have that much faith in it prior to it released but it's a very solid title, not yet perfect but more accessible than Dirt Rally 2.0 and just overall better than Dirt 5. Also the Car Builder feature is pretty cool albeit limited but it's one of the very few games to feature something like this just a fun thing on the side.
    Cool to see you guys all give it a shot and maybe a Snow Stage in a RWD Group B Car next :P

      @nikosfotidas8543 5 місяців тому +1

      Well, he'd have to hire someone sign up himself as well... cause a masterclass needs well... a master... 🤣
      By the way, any good rally sim racer can help you master the basics and show you proper rally techniques like pendulum turns (Scandinavian flicks which I'm very mediocre at but sometimes I use them), when to use the handbrake and how, throttle management, how to properly downshift and use engine brake
      Rally racing has a lot to do with technique naturally but it also has A LOT to do with feeling... you learn to feel the turns... judge them based on the pace notes... and as a rather fast rally sim racer myself the best advice I can give you is turn off all the HUD except for the speedometer and LISTEN to the pacenotes... learn to listen to them like a new language... you'll be going tens of seconds or even minutes faster in no time...

    • @onetripwonders
      @onetripwonders 5 місяців тому

      @@nikosfotidas8543 thanks for the advice and yes HUD is off. I took Scott's Iracing course and he hires great instructors. He doesn't do the actual classes. My racing is much better as a result so I was hoping he'd do the same for rally. Happy rallying!

    • @nikosfotidas8543
      @nikosfotidas8543 5 місяців тому +1

      @@onetripwonders I don't play iRacing, I only play ACC cause I feel cheated paying the ridiculous money iRacing is asking... I'm a decent track driver (normally around 3 secs off pro-pace in most tracks in ACC and in the lower splits of LFM I do fairly well and have some wins) but I'm much better at rallying...
      I need to work on my consistency in rallying cause in EA WRC where the roads are brutal cause they're real (unlike Dirt Rally 2.0) I do make big mistakes sometimes and ruin my rally but when I'm clean I'm always top 5-10% worldwide...
      My best advice would be to drive the shit out of the Junior WRC car... and don't touch the WRC 1 monsters until you can drive the slower ones to their limits... if you do it will create bad habits that lose you time because you'll be trying to stay on the road rather than drive fast and smooth...
      So my advice to you is to take the Junior WRC car, learn to tune it properly (WRC setups site has a lot of setups) and practice on long stages (the longest ones). Try to use proper techniques, try learning pendulum turns (Scandi flicks) by braking and turning towards the outside and then swinging hard to the inside...
      FInally try to train your eye to scout the terrain... off camber turns are brutal and you need more braking for example or you can use the handbrake to turn the car more aggressively there...
      And for the love of god, don't try to emulate speed runners that go for world records... that kind of driving doesn't work in a real rally... you will crash and you will crash badly

    James Baldwin is the perfect example of how Sim Racing has been a blessing for the racing community... if Sim Racing wasn't a thing James would have never in his life gotten a seat on a real car... he'd never have become a racing driver and his god-given talent would have gone to waste...
    James is considered even by real experienced racing drivers as one of the most rapid people in a car world-wide... and it all started as a guy plaing racing sim games on his computer... which is nuts if you think about it... it's nuts that nowadays you can have an extremely accurate racing experience for under 1000$ with a direct drive wheel (I have a CSL DD 8Nm plus the clubsport shifter and handbrake) .
    After watching this I wanna go do that same Croatia stage to see how close I'd get to James time... I am experienced in rally sims and I am proud to call myself a fast rally driver... I am certain I won't beat that 4:09:852 of James but I wanna see how close I can get (I am mostly a gravel specialist... tarmac I'm just decent, nothing more)

    I mean, if you run it for enough times, it becomes circuit racing again. Like, Nordschleife has over 100 corners, for any new comer that must feel like rallying as well, yet many of us probably remember every corner of it as if it was the back of the yard. Real life rally drivers are so impressive, they only get a slow scout run before fully sending it.

    • @theKashConnoisseur
      @theKashConnoisseur 22 дні тому

      1-2 slow recce runs, a comprehensive set of exact notes for every meter of the course, multiple rounds of video playback.... They get a lot more than a single scouting run!

    You can tell these guys came from the formula 1, sort of rear wheel drive, lots of oversteer, basically things that handle like carts. You can see how he's trying to saw at the wheel to get the rotation into the corner but it's the exact opposite in an AWD rally car going off-road. Like they are trying to not lock up the brakes and slide which is what you wanna do

  • @shaggings

    A good way I have learned to get a good questimate of the corner and the speed I can carry, I use the numbers like "3 left" as gears, I can enter the corner in 3rd gear. Usually works for a start and then as I get to know the car I can change it up and it becomes natural.

    It is wild to me just how different circuit racing is compared to rally. It takes a totally different skill-set to manipulate those short wheelbase cars through those turns. Colin McRae has my absolute favorite racing quote: "Straight roads are for fast cars. Turns are for fast drivers."

    I don't know how you all can drive while the others are talking. Whenever I stop listening to the co-driver in rally sims I crash XD.
    You're supposed to listen to the co-driver and judge which gear to use for a corner based on that, then you'll get the speed almost right. If you still enter the corner a bit to quickly, it's usually enough to just slide a bit more, to get rid of some of the speed.

    i think there is a disavantage on both side when jumping to theie opposite side, there is obviously some "accruacy" differences on the wheel-road interaction, another big difference would be the body g-force. this is the major factor that would drive how the arm forces are put in

    I think for a racing pilot, whose senses are tuned to picking up information from everything happening during the race - steering wheel feedback, wheel grip, suspension, roll, etc., driving in a sim without a motion rig, even with the best direct drive wheel, is a very incomplete experience and there is just no way he/she can put the driving skills to use, regardless of how good the physics engine is.
