Jim Henson was not a ventriloquist, you can see his lips move, but nearly everyone talks to his characters like they were real people. Jim was an amazing artist who is missed greatly.
I'm not sure why I've been binging Kermit interviews lately but Joan plays along the best out of any interviewer (Carson, Arsenio etc). RIP to her and Jim both.
He’s not a ventriloquist, he’s not even trying to not move his lips, you can see the wire, he’s telling you there’s a wire... and you still are focused on Kermit. That is mastery, my friend.
Man, I didn't even notice Jim in the background after Kermit started talking. He's just so believable as his own person you just tone out the guy with his hand up his frog hole.
A true puppeteer. You believe Kermit as soon as he starts talking, the movements are so natural and responsive to what's happening in the moment. Wish I could've learned from Jim. Unfortunate I came into the world shortly before he left it.
*A true puppeteer. You believe Kermit as soon as he starts talking, the movements are so natural and responsive to what's happening in the moment. Wish I could've learned from Jim. It's unfortunate I came into the world shortly before he left it.
Jim Henson was the closest thing to Walt Disney of his generation. Walt Disney brought joy to the audiences of 1920's to 1950's and beyond with the lovable characters of Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Daisy, Goofy, Pluto, and Chip 'n Dale. Jim Henson did the same thing with all the countless Muppets from mid-50's forward. Jim Henson aspired to greater things, and if he had not died so soon, I think he would have achieved all his goals with the unstoppable pluck that true artists have.
That's a testament to Jim Henson's talent right there, specifically his talent at creating and playing likable and lively characters Kermit just openly acknowledged that he's operated by wires and even with that I STILL am able to take him seriously like he was a real live person... frog... frog person. The illusion is just too damn good!
Between Henson’s quick wit, Rivers looking at Kermit just about the whole time while speaking to him, & the fact that this is to promote LABYRINTH, just an 11/10 interview right here. May their memories be a blessing to all who knew or come to know them.
I'm grateful that I grew up during the era I did. I experienced Sesame Street, the Muppet Show, and Fraggle Rock in their first runs. And Joan Rivers narrated "The Adventures of Letterman" for us kids.
It's ridiculous how a good Jim Henson was. every interview with Kermit they are just talking to Kermit and Jim Henson is just there in the background making fun of it mimicking Kermit. But the subtle head nods the like leaning in to listen just like the facials it's so good.
Darn, Jim looks like Steven Spilberg with that whole beard get up. And wow how he could stay in character well. I mean maybe he knew what they were suppose to talk about but she come of as asking him intensely so it had to have been prepared to get the most real reaction. And how much I try my eyes focus right on Kermit when he talks, can´t look at Jim, master puppeter.
These interviews with Jim always make me a little sad- no matter what show he's the guest on, the host always quickly asks him to be Kermit/Rowlf/etc. They ask one or two questions to him for formality but then spend most of the time with the puppets. I get that's exciting, and I always love seeing Jim perform, but he's such an interesting and inspirational person on his own, it'd be nice to have seen more of just Jim himself!
@meg elizabeth Me too, apparently Jim was a very soft-spoken, shy guy person to person. Kermit and the rest of his characters may have been a way for him to be more extroverted by separating his social energy into another character.
That's just a testament of how brilliant Jim Henson was. The answers on the spot are brilliant and so authentic. Kermit seems so real and Jim just was Kermit. No modern take of Kermit, no matter how close the voice alone might be, come even close to his personality and wit. Jim Henson, noone can replace you!
Every time I see Jim Henson I'm just blown away. I can see his mouth move, I can see his hands move, but I still instantly forget that what ever muppet he's operating isn't real.
• Brackets • yeah but if you think about it, Walt was always for the new technology, he was inventing things himself. He would have been all for 3d technology, he probably would have been working with it as soon as it was possible to truly work with it.
The term genius is often thrown around too liberally but Jim Henson? He was a genius. So quick of thought and funny without having to be base or crass.
If so, thank heavens! I don't like Denise at all. Kermit should get back with Miss Piggy. If a girl is willing to stand by you for some 30 or 40 years, then she is a girl worth moving mountains to keep!
I do blame the writers! I understand that with new audiences, certain things need to be updated for the script, but you can't change who these characters are! Kermit the Frog must remain a shy pond-dweller, and if people want to know more about his love life, they should do the smart thing and ask Miss Piggy, because she would be more open about it, and even then... it's just like Kermit said to Joan Rivers, he's from Sesame Street!
The writers are the worst thing about the new Muppets. Disney’s Muppets are definitely not the Henson characters. Disney is the reason we no longer have Whitmire.
Joan: "Are you sleeping with Miss Piggy? Can we just get right down to it? Are you sleeping with Miss Piggy? I wanna know!" Kermit: "Stop! You can't come on television asking me about that! I'm on Sesame Street, for goodness sakes!"
Wow. I've never heard Kermit The Frog and Jim Henson talk about sex. Well, the original Muppet Show wasn't just intended for kids. But now Disney bought it, and I'm turning 11, so I'm used to the more modern muppets (and the 2015 show).
It’s amazing how easily I’m convinced Kermit is real! Even know we can see all Jim working Kermit it’s so easy to fall into the fantasy! Henson was the master puppeteer!
It’s funny that all the Jim Henson interviews hosts always want to interview the puppet not the man. He’s very shy and quiet man but his charisma is projected through the puppets.
I adore this lovely man !!! Thank you for everything Jim! Kermit is a huge part of my life he makes me laugh and happy but also emotional love you Kermit 💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚💚
Kermit's soul went with our beloved Jim. I'd give almost anything to have him back and keep The Muppets out of the Big Mouses clutches. Everything they touch turns to dust since Micheal Eisner shafted Roy Disney.
@@megelizabeth9492 no, most of them are awful. Dave Golez is the only one still performing a few of his characters and Disney has told Frank Oz they don't want him, so no, I won't spare the current muppeteers. They are no good. Again, the soul of the Muppets died with Henson
Kermit really should have let Joan have it - she obviously didn't see The Muppet Movie if she's asking how he got his start and if frog legs on the menu upsets him.
Jim is a National / Worldwide treasure. He might be around but his platform will last forever. One of the greatest contributions you can give is that of yourself and the ability to bring people together for a rare moment of fondness.
He must’ve been so uncomfortable trying to answer those questions in front of adults. It really shows how amazing he was at creating something that resonates with us regardless of age.
Everyone is saying Disney ruined muppets even though it still has Muppet-Vision 3D open which was being made while Jim Henson was alive, if they wanted the new style they could revamp it but they didn’t.
Man I love Jim Henson ( his work!) and truly miss him! He is like no other before or since! You dont see his like anywhere period! I always had a burning question though: why does Kermit have a collar? You dont see that on real frogs? Lol
In addition to the neck seam thing the other reply mentioned, it's also because, shockingly, Kermit was not originally a frog. Back when he was originally created for Sam and Friends, he was some sort of ambiguous lizard-like monster. It was only with the first true Muppet specials as we know them that he was definitively declared to be a frog.
In Germany Kermit was first known by Sesame Street and some years later as host of the muppet show. It was strange, that they changed the German voice actor, in the Muppet Show it was the same voice, who spoke Jerry Lewis.

Kermit did a good job voicing Jim Henson.
He’s an excellent ventriloquist!
Good punctuation.
Good punctuation.@@valenciageode25
He's a pro..duh!!!
"If I kiss you would you turn into a prince?"
"...we could try it."
Very good!!
Good very!!
It wouldn’t work she is not even close to being pretty
Clarence Jones damn
It was better than good, but the best response to that would have been, well, I wouldn't want Jim to get jealous.
Jim Henson was not a ventriloquist, you can see his lips move, but nearly everyone talks to his characters like they were real people. Jim was an amazing artist who is missed greatly.
It helps that he was very witty.
He has said in interviews that he isn't a ventriloquist. He called himself a puppeteer
Yeah but the beard really covers it so I can't tell if he is moving his lips or not 🤣😂
He never tried to be a ventriloquist he was a puppeteer.
Who asked?
It literally looks like Kermit is truly talking, with Jim Henson mocking him in the background :).
"If I talk about other women, it's dangerous to my health."
Karate chop hurts
Hieee-Yahh!
Not to mention his personal safety
All those red flags he was waving that we didn’t pick up on
I'm not sure why I've been binging Kermit interviews lately but Joan plays along the best out of any interviewer (Carson, Arsenio etc). RIP to her and Jim both.
I’m in that same circle too now and I’m just watching all the recommends and this one was the most natural and funny
Perhaps it has something to do with Jordan Peterson's videos

Well used to be
I’m done, Kermit just said racial slur on live television. My life is complete.
I misread your comment thinking that Kermit said a racial slur.
I like how everyone there is dressed in "formal" attire, and Jim is in a Mr. Rogers' sweater.
@matt fahringer Exactly. What a legend. This is why he was my hero during my childhood.
He's in a Jim Henson cardigan
He’s not a ventriloquist, he’s not even trying to not move his lips, you can see the wire, he’s telling you there’s a wire... and you still are focused on Kermit.

It’s mind boggling what Jim has done with Kermit.
He was so good that when you happen to look at Jim talking (for Kermit..?), you think, why are Jim's lips moving while Kermit has the floor?
Man, I didn't even notice Jim in the background after Kermit started talking. He's just so believable as his own person you just tone out the guy with his hand up his frog hole.

He was 6’ 3”.
Lots of practice.
Very funny. THIS is the Muppet's! Not what Disney has turned them into.
look at what Disney turned Star Wars into. They ruin everything
