In this video, I play the white side of a Traxler Counter Attack (a sharp variation of the 2 knights defense) against lichess user adfost8 (2012). The mainline Traxler is terrifying for white. Only the bravest of souls should mess with this opening.

"That was a near death experience."
Eric's heart rate still 50 bpm.
Where is the BPM?
@@cool-as-cucumber on the dance floor
Underrated comment lmao
Hahahha
It's because of his magic tea
not get flagged and not get mated seem like pretty good goals for all positions tbh
Lol
Not when you are totally winning I guess (so you wanna add don't draw)
What does he flagged mean?
Christopher Pitt Flagging is when you run out of time
@@christopherpitt2196 running out of time on physical clocks used to put up a flag to note which side ran out, so the term "getting flag" started to be used, even when flags aren't seen.
The amazing thing is the opponent even prep that position, Eric survived all the mate threat and even winning the time scramble. What a beast.
To be fair though, the other guy didn’t play that much bullet/blitz
@@syomchi he didn’t. Queen pawn should have been pushed the moment queen was out of danger. Also castling isn’t the strongest move in the position. Because you have so many mate threats. The whole kingside trade was kinda jank too.
@Gil Monteverde Yea, the Traxler is just so poisonous if you don't knoe the correct moves... Honestly it's not even worth to take on g7 with the knight, if opponent plays Bc5 just Bxg7, the Traxler is just too convoluted.
This might be the equivalent to hunting a sniper with a pistol. Eric's reflexes are to sharp
the 2 best moves are castling and d5, they are both 0.0 acording to computer, that since they transpose when you castle rh4 e4 kg2 and d5 and after you play d5 rh4 e4 kg2 castles

Black declined draw and lost, classic.
I feel attacked...
Playing for the win, or also known as- playing for the loss
It was casual, not agreeing to a draw is a very reasonable thing to do if you want to have fun.
That's me every time I have a draw opportunity
@@SlightSmile Very true
Eric: wow, this is really crazy position
Stockfish: nah, it's clearly a dead draw.
Eeassyy draw
Traxler is actually a very difficult position for engines to evaluate properly. You need to have the depth set very, very high because there's a few weird lines where a weaker engine thinks it's okay but there's actually a losing sequence 30+ moves down the line that it misses.
@@Guy_With_A_Laser I'm learning the Tennyson Gambit- also a very trappy line. I was really getting beaten up playing against it as black, so I've started playing it as white. Booked up and bullet is an unbeatable combination.
Eric is insane in bullet.
even being up a queen, i'd say most people would have lost that position to an 800 rated player. Even though it is clearly winning, black has some sort of fortress-ish thing going on the light squares with the pawns and that knight can't be kicked away while covering the dark squares, so white needs to very carefully attack on the dark squares without blundering to queen or bishop to the night. 3 seconds is so little time.
Idk how he so quickly created that mating net with the queen and bishop. I certainly wasn’t looking at it that way lol

the first game:
"traxler gambit but white gets two moves in a row"
This is just another excellent example for what seperates Eric Rosen et al from average players. How he is able to look at the board once and be immediately aware of what every piece is able and/or likely to do (with some exceptions, thank God) is just beyond me.
During the last two moves, it took him less than a second to see forced mate in two. I know I am pointing out the obvious here, but I still think it is just incredible. I, for my part, rewatched the last ten seconds of the game at half speed and still needed to pause the game to understand what was going on.
@Brandon Vila Yes, I realise that it is somewhat of a given with high-level players. But it still amazes me.
I felt the same way when I watched some of his older videos where he is doing the puzzle rush challenge. As a 1500, positions that took him a second to understand took me 3 minutes at least, crazy stuff.
Brandon Vila i think hes trying to point out the difference between normal players and chess masters, not eric with other masters
Yah, it’s all about the good mouse and internet connection. Riiiight.
@@BoatsAndCats same2x 😌
Eric's best move was to sneak peak at opponent's ratings and find out if he can trouble him with a nasty time scramble and hope for flagging him or making him blunder.. Worked really well 👍🏻
Ironically, Eric missed that the opponent DID have a bullet rating. like 1950 iirc
That one dislike is from the guy who lost in his prep
Another 8 dislike are his clone
The Traxler family got to hear about this video.
I wanted to dislike... my poor traxler...
@@Crashandburn999 INFECT ME, MOMMY.
Damn Levy broke the Traxler so good in his video that I'm literally knowing what to play as both white and black.
Thanks Levy
yuh same
True
Same. And you know exactly where black fucked up.
Yup
Learn proper openings
Amazing skill. Playing that mating net from 8ish seconds in a 3 minute no increment game is madness. Fantastic game.
Eric is the most confused chess genius ever. "Oh I'm white?", "Ah, castling, forgot that was legal", or the other day, "doh! My queen!"
Haha, always a pleasure to watch you play
@Daniel Leon Zapata oh no my bishop
Oh no my queen is calculated, but daaah my queen isn't.

Hello
I almost flagged my pants just watching this
Would that make you the Number One, or the Number Two, player in the world? :D
The last bishop-queen dance is just wow.
This is how much good masters are.
"Oh opponent doesn't play bullet" proceeds to unleash hell on opponent
Did I mention eric is the most chill guy in the world? Hes the one that will say when a serial killer is coming to him: "I blundered, let's resign!"
It's the first time my comment is recognized. Thx and yeah... eric doesn't resign... but for his "beautiful life"...
@Mr. Logic Man "Oh no my life! My beautiful life..."
There's a funny line... A few moments later the serial killer drops dead.
Eric never resigns tho
"Ah, my queen"
"Dah, my rook"
Alexa quiet!
"I don't even Traxler, bro" That was not very eric of you
"I had this position before you were born" is 100% something Ben would say.
The fact that he could escape all murder by saying “oh no my life” is creepy
Insane ending
Traxler counterattack always wins
Yup, love it
Except 5.Bxf7 lol
@@LeventK Hahaha right
I take with knight and then play Kf1 Qe7 Nxh8 and my opponents often blunder with Nxe4 and then Qh5+ g6 Nxg6 hxg6 Qxg6+ winning the knight on e4
@@quentincastroniemann7530 Dan Heisman has complete book on this traxler counterattack
I studied traxler a lot recently. Nxf7 instead of Bxf7 is a draw with best play. after Bxf2, Kf1 and Kf2 are both playable. after Nxe4, Kg1 and Ke3 draw, everything else loses. black can play d5 and castling in either order, the lines can transpose into each other. after black castles, Rh4 is the only move. ben finegold has a lecture on the ccscatl youtube channel where he talks about his game in that position, he said white moved instantly every move and the game ended in a perpetual check that was still part of whites preparation
I can see Eric getting mugged and he just says “Ahh my bishop! I resign”
aah my wallet!! wow, that was a good move
"and then maybe I win king of the hill"
Why did I laugh so hard?
It's felt like a badminton match at the end. What a bullet game
"Dhaa im down on time"
**Enters in god mode**
"let's go, uhhh"
8:47 SAY WHAT?!? I had no clue Eric was 27 years old are you kidding me? I though he was way older (by demeanor, not physique), yet we're actually the same age 😱🤯
Yeah, he kinda looks 28
Wow. That was like the matrix at the end. V impressive!
Ben Finegold played this line before you was doing PIPI in your pampers
SO true;)
LOL xd
Still theory
@Dfg Sdfg interesting you not catching up to the most recent news
@Dfg Sdfg lol did u see tigran petrosian's post? he basically said that he was playing super strong players before So was doing pipi in his pampers (So accused him of cheating; he was cheating :|)
I enjoy playing Traxler Nxf7 line with both sides. I used to play Kf1 line only until I saw your video. I've won all the games I've played with white with this crazy Rh4 move. Thanks Eric.
Seeing Eric win is always a pleasure, but specially more so when the opponent has created a clearly favourable custom position
It's not really a favorable position. Traxler Counter Gambit is a desperate counter punch.
Eric went into it by taking the bishop, but white king doesn't have to take. And then the tension in black position ain't resolved.
Wow, that was crazy. I would of lost that game! Bravo to Eric!!!! :)
For almost the full time:
*Lets play calm...*
When there are 15 seconds
*I AM SPEED*
Procrastinating skills
That Endgame was....just sick. As a middling player.... the muscle memory you must've developed to play that quickly-just wow. Excellent game. Buzzer-beater, MJ-style.
Ar 4:56: I just have two goals, dont get mated and dont get flagged, says our hero. .
10:20 Euro is the currency in almost all EU countries. that includes finland.
“Thanks for the game, I hope you are not too broken after that... this will probably go on UA-cam” lol
I used to know all that theory, as far as a I remember if you take the bishop on F2 black is winning basically, and your best chance is to make a draw, with some repetitions, and the best move was supposed to be Kf1 to avoid those lines, but still complicated positions, engines does not even know how to evaluate those positions. And ofc Bxf7 nowadays is considered as best instead if Nxf7 for this reason.
Man Levi really did a Job in our minds
That ending... my heart was racing
All the Gotham subs were waiting for this Eric to play against this cos this opening is powerful
I remember ben was talking about this line in one of his lectures, something like that he didn't know about it and had to calculate but his opponent knew that is some kind of forced draw at the end.
Yeah, he definitely talked about it. I saw the lesson and I’m going to rewatch it. It’s worth knowing the basics of the Traxler, for sure
I guess I just assumed Eric was older than me just because of his skill. Weird.
“Hello..... please help me” lmao
The moment when Eric opens the openings section, and sees that this position has only been achieved before by Ben Finegold, feels like a part of some hilarious script. Too good!
I cant get enough of your videos
Awesome survival skills! I'd love to see you do a Traxler study on stream!
"Kf1 seems illogical"
Me and stockfish: *Grabs popcorn*
Holy Shit you actually survived and beat the advanced fried liver attack o_O
He seriously went super saiyan here. Very cool take on odds games.
omg Eric, that end game with no time was amazing, even if i had gotten to that position it would have taken me so long to see the mate, nice job
Ben castled in that game a few moves later and they found a repetition on move 15 ish. He’s lectured about it.
the main line in Traxler counterattack is Kf1, not take the bishop on f3. Glad you came out of it alive :D
nicely done! great under time pressure and you still instructed us
At 3:05 you had Nh6+ Kh8 Nf7+ Kh7 repetition draw option as well
this was a winning position for black, specially after eric took the bishop, playing against an IM is something else.
I wonder how adfost8 felt after losing, especially with a set starting position that leads right into his prep. Oof.
Eric even offered him a draw.
I don’t remember if this was the exact game, but Ben Finegold had lectured about a time he played the Traxler Counterattack and drew against an opponent 200 points lower rated, and he stopped playing the Traxler because of that game.
That was amazing - I saw no way out of that especially with how much time you had left. 👏👏👏
*7:32** - **7:42** This part made me burst out laughing.*
I love playing the traxler with black. One time I had a guy play all the worst moves for white. No one is going into that line anymore it seems.
I love kings march line
Wow that was very impressive...how you were able to squirm your way out of getting mated was incredible
"And then I can win king of the hill"
-- An IM while playing standard chess
Imagine being the opponent probably spending hours prepping this position to challenge Eric only to get mated with 1.5s left, bravo
That was awesome.. i've been trying to play the traxler and now all of a sudden none of my opponents are even attempting fried liver attack
Geez. Ultimate "back from the dead" vibes. Eric is the man.
That was a fantastic game. Pity black couldn’t play Nd4 earlier. I feel it would have made white’s job harder if both black knights were in play.
Traxler just sounds like poison. Something Putin would use.
You are really good at fast playing! Abnormal
Eric you’re insane, your mind is fast.
“That was like a near death experience” Lolol
The thing i like the most about rosen is the fact that he is a fellow psychonaut
1992 was before you was born, wow I was born that year and all this time I somehow thought you're older than me
By 7:50 my mouth was hanging open in disbelief. So crazy
Lmao this made me remember when i mated some 700 dude with .6 seconds left and he had like a minute.
Those last 20 seconds were pretty sick. Very nice.
I just watched the "gambits. gambits everywhere" video and heard of the traxler for the first time, so this is good to see how to play against it
@gothamchess covers the tracker attack in depth also the fried lover attack if anyone is interested
9:03 spend like 5 mins at that and the following positions at pause to figure out what the hell is wrong with Rh4 and why he doesn't want to play it. Glad im not stupid lol
Kf1 should be played...else Kxf2 and then Kg1...the other positions are so dominating for black.
But Eric is the best🔥
Kxf2 Ke3 is still a draw with best play, d3 was the blunder in this game. Rh4 was the only move
@@ben1996123 yeah but the choices are so tough in Ke3
I think Ben actually has a video on that very game!
actually yes ua-cam.com/video/Vv1l0X4T9U0/v-deo.html at 15:01

Great endgame level and speed eric 🔥👌
TIL that I'm actually 2 years older than Eric.
Am I mating ? I'm quite mating ....

Excellent defense. Nice finish.
Lol! Eric 😂 such a beast!
I can't believe you survived that
BEST UA-camR EVER!
4:11 black should have made the exchanges in this position then took the queen with the knight.. in hopes to pinning down the light squares rook
Said a mouthful there, and i also was complimenting Eric. Not a chess player am fencer. Love Eric's videos. . Witty and intelligent.
WOW. Now that was fucking impressive!
