  • Welcome to the 59th Episode of Collider’s Heroes, hosted by Jon Schnepp, with regular guests John Campea, Amy Dallen and Robert Meyer Burnett. On this episode of Collider’s Heroes (Tuesday May 31st, 2016) we discuss:
    -Heroes is moving to Wednesdays
-The Rock cast as Doc Savage
-X-Men: Apocalypse box office and what's next
-Captain America revealed as a Hydra Agent in the comics
-Rosa Salazar cast in Battle Angel: Alita
    -Minor Mutations
    -Flashback
    -Spotlight
-Collider Heroes is Moving to Wednesdays
Collider Heroes is moving to Wednesday! Set your calendar everyone, because the Collider Heroes Panel will be even sweatier! Next week, Tuesday, is the premiere of Collider Nightmares, a show dedicated to all things horror and it will be hosted by our own scream queen Clarke Wolfe, with Perri Nemiroff, Mark Reilly and myself talking about ghoulish cinematic nightmares and bloody good series to watch, like The Conjuring 2...so now Collider Heroes will be let loose on Comic Book Day, Wednesday, the sweatiest day of the week!
    The Rock is Doc Savage!
Yes, this man is literally in everything, and that’s totally okay for the Collider Heroes panel. The Rock is Hobbs, he’s in Baywatch, he’s Black Adam, he’s in some new Ludlum Cinematic Universe and now he’s Doc Savage in writer director Shane Black's next film after he rocks the new Predator! Doc Savage is indeed the very first super-man, introduced in the pulp magazine that brought us The Shadow, and The Phantom. In fact many say Doc Savage was the inspiration for Superman! The Rock announced the casting via his Facebook page saying that the #1 reason he is most excited... is because "HE'S A F*CKING HILARIOUS WEIRDO!" The panel talk all about the Doc Savage film and what The Rock and Shane Black will bring to the adaptation.
X-Men: Apocalypse Box Office and the Future
X-Men: Apocalypse opened here in the states to a solid $65 million, much less than was expected; with mixed critical reviews and audience word of mouth affecting the box office. Bryan Singer and Simon Kinberg have been very vocal about the upcoming X-men, New Mutants, Deadpool and Wolverine films and what they hold for the future. The panel go into detail about the future of the mutants over at Fox and look at what we might be able to expect from the X-men franchise.
Lex Luthor Returns for Justice League
Jesse Eisenberg let people know over the weekend that Lex Luthor will be returning in the Justice League film, currently in production. Though details were pretty scarce on just how involved he will be in the movie, Eisenberg did confirm his return, saying he's excited to be a part of the new movie and to get his turn.
    Captain America: Hydra Agent
Marvel did a massive shake-up for their Captain America comics line, revealing that Steve Rogers betrayed his team saying “Hail Hydra” in the last panel. The news was heard around the world, to noticeably mixed reactions. Even the writer was getting death threats! Every single person on social media it seemed was weighing in with their own opinions and so, the Heroes panel offer their own thoughts and look towards the future of the series and how it might affect the MCU.
Rosa Salazar Cast as Battle Angel: Alita
The much talked about Manga comics adaptation has found its Alita in actress Rosa Salazar. The film is going to be directed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by James Cameron, who is currently busy directing four consecutive Avatar sequels. The panel look at the casting news and wonder what a Battle Angel movie will look like on the big screen!
    Minor Mutations:
    Flashback - Blade Trinity (2004)

    1) I'm a bit flabbergasted by the mixed/negative reaction to X-men: Apocalypse. It was one of those rare films where I was giddy/excited/thrilled from beginning to end. Loved it! Also, it might actually be my favorite X-men film.
    2) I'm happy to hear Eisenberg will be back as Lex in Justice League Part 1! I'm part of the minority that loved BvS and I'm part of the even smaller minority that loved Eisenberg's performance as Lex. Looking forward to seeing more from him and to see how the character has changed after the events of BvS.

From what understand consensus why such negativity and mixed reaction to this film, is people got to use to serious drama, that last two xmen films had, and the last wolverine film had.
Now seem be heading back to themes of first 3 films, which i fine with, honestly i didn't hate film i liked it, but i felt had way to many mutant cameos, and apcoclypse, way they did him seem just little to reminscent of The mummy yeah stephen sommers one.

I really don't like what Amy said about Captain America and Nazism. Is this where we have reached? People are so neurotic and immature that you can no longer explore what is obviously a temporary plotline because it hurts their feelings? This is the kind of shit that leads to the bland, sanitized fiction that plagues so many genres. People have to start pushing back against this.

A make believe story, about a make believe character who turns out to be a member of a make believe organisation? And best of all, this will not last. It's typical comic writing. They undo these things all the time.

+B-dawg8504 luthor making supes and bats fight seems illogical because superman could totally search for his mom on his own in a fraction of a fraction of the hour he was given without even meeting up to fight batman. Zemo didn't want the avengers to fight, just ironman and captain America, the two most influential of the team. Everything else was adapted into the plan like broad strokes, something I beleive a former death squad secret agent could pull off if he was still under the radar. I completely respect your argument. but in my humble opinion Zemo is the lesser ridiculous of the two.

I found X-Men Apocalypse to be very mediocre. It had a lot of potential, but had an overbundance of characters and I did not enjoy the new cast more than the original cast. Sophie Turner was probably the best of all of them and she didn't impressed me all that much to be honest. Apocalypse was a weak villain and his motivations didn't even make sense. His four horsemen (aside from Magneto) don't do anything and he just picks them at random. The ending was terrible and nothing really made sense. The relationship between Charles and Magento was by far the best part of the film for me and the forest scene was the best and most memorable scene of the film.

    • @ColliderLadiesNight
      @ColliderLadiesNight  8 років тому +8

How? If it was Cranston, that wouldn't have changed the script. It would have been exact same lines, the exact same actions, doing the exact same things, the (almost) exact same way Snyder would have wanted it performed.

    • @215Revan
      @215Revan 8 років тому

+ColliderVideos I disagree. wouldn't have looked as childish or come of as playful. the same lines can be delivered much differently by talented people. I thought Cavill's lines stunk but he did them well. And to the batman person, affleck nailed and he was the one I thought would ruin the movie for me. all that being said I liked the movie. they just crammed to much shit into it and the Martha thing was ridiculous as was jesse eisenburg or however u spell it. Maybe it's cause I'm 37 and saw gene Hackman do it brilliantly I'm bias. just my opinion. I could be totally wrong. they hired the kid for a reason. just was a little to riddlery for me

I've been seeing a lot of people question why Apocalypse needs horsemen. (Possible spoilers) I think one major reason, as we see in the films, is to protect him during his body transfers. Possibly the biggest reason is, because as he said to Xavier, he cannot be everywhere at once. So he basically uses them as enforcers of his will where he cannot physically be present. As for his motives, they are the same as they are with the comic version of him: survival of the fittest.

I really liked Apocalypse, It's not perfect but it's nowhere near as bad as people are making it out to be. A lot of unfair nitpicking and bandwagoning. And yes I thought the Quicksilver scene was better then the DOFP one (which was also awesome). I do think they wasted Apocalypse and didn't even seed the idea of aliens which they had the perfect opportunity to do with Apocalypse's alien armor (or lack thereof) which can lead into the Phoenix.

Don't know about "that simple", but it's 100% a contributing factor. I spent my extra coin on taking myself wife and son to go see Civil War. I don't have 8 hours to spare to get to the nearest Cinema every time a movie comes out. And the $70+ I have to spend to get there is not overflowing out of my pockets. I know not every country is like mine but we have free TV over here that will show all movies eventually. If I miss it at the cinemas then I'll just watch it on TV if I am still interested.

The thing with x men is that it came out at the wrong time and the marketing was not as impressive as the other superhero movies. Plus it didn't have the mass appeal that the past 3 superhero movies did. Deadpool had the best marketing ever. Batman and Superman are in the same movie which was super hyped up. Then Civil War aka Avengers 2.5 ft spiderman. X men just couldn't measure up. The appeal wasnt there and the trailers didn't have that spark that the other 3 movies had. So thats why x men had a weak box office

It's weird the middle ground on critics reviews is getting lost. I don't know if it's because of the outrage culture or social media bandwagons but it's getting crazy. A film nowadays is either amazing or garbage ...There's no grey area at all... its stupid.
x-men apoc is is a good film with problems. its not awful and it's not as good all as x-2 or dofp. maybe a 65-75% (6.5-7.5/10). If u watch it u'll enjoy it...so watch it.

Erik Lehnsherr's storyline in the film was my favorite period. I think seeing him trying to lead a normal life with his wife and daughter was just beautiful and at the same time seeing his past coming back to haunt him was just tough. He wanted to put his past behind but just couldn't seem to escape it and going through the loss of losing his family was just painful. Fassbender really nails it perfectly.

A lot of the more logical criticism over the Cap double agent reveal I've seen has been precisely because no-one who reds comics regularly believes it will stick and that it's just for sensationalism. It's remaking a character for shock value and then finding a way to quickly return to the status quo.
Most detractors were busy debating how they'll inevitably fix it, rather than being genuinely intrigued by the the actual direction the story will go. They compared it to recent Spidey and Iron Man "turned evil but only temporarily" runs.

The only thing that was of worth of discussion is the death threats. It needs to end. It's awful. That people feel so entitled that they'd threaten to kill someone over a fictional character/story is just beyond understanding.

nice to know I"m not the only that thought Eisenberg's Lex was good. The same goes for Duncan's Kingpin in the director's cut of Daredevil. The best thing about Lex in BVS is you DO NOT LIKE HIM. There is nothing cool about him, when Doomsday is about to take him out and Superman stops him is a classic moment where you are so pissed at Superman's boy scout antics, saving someone who almost had his mother killed.

I hated his look,it annoyed me that when they used the portal too go get Magneto that he was the same size as Storm and Pyslocke,it looked funny.Campea nailed it about his voice. They failed to give any real substance as to why he need new Horsemen, and then the ones he did choose, they were useless in the movie. I saw Batman V Superman trying to forget all reviews and my own bias, but even with a positive attitude I ended up thinking is a really bad movie with a lot of budget and I hate fan boys and collider trying to say is not that bad. I like to watch VFX movies so I don't care when the plot is not extremely good, I can pass that if the movie is entertaining, because I know I will be enjoying the visuals and dumb action, if I am going to see a movie I know is Sci Fi or Fantasy or SuperHeroes I cannot expect impeccable plot because is not real life so I buy my ticket accepting the game from the start, and that's good enough for me "entertain me with your silly movie and make me forget real world for a while", but the problem with this movie is that the director thinks of it as if he's doing a master piece of cinematography and forgets to entertain the audience, he couldn't care less. It feels condescendant.
The director or producers (who knows) has/have no respect for the general audience and much less for the hard core fans, Snyder ended up believing the crap that he's the best director ever and he deserved doing what he wanted with the money he got to make the movie. BvS is a collection of very expensive visually amazing scene after the other without any other intention but satisfying the directors personal artistic needs instead of servicing the Story-telling work, i.e. he didn't need to explain again how the Waynes were murdered but his ego was bigger than common sense, he wanted to make the best iconic Waynes murder ever, and then got the "Martha" thing into to back it up (when a good dialogue and a tomb stone with an inscription of Martha was enough), and a lot of scenes were like that, his stupid ego was driving all his decisions in this movie.
Again, if the plot had huge holes but the dialogues or the acting was entertaining with the VFX, etc, the movie could have save face, but the acting was bad or flat, yeah including Ben Afleck (he's only decent and makes a good action job but is not "killing it" as Batman, NO he's not like RDJ in Iron Man don't say that crap), all characters are boring, take them-selves way too serious in a very annoying way. Even in the Dark Knight, Bruce Wayne is entertaining he's not serious ALL the time! even when is Batman Chris Bale looks more human, sometimes he DOES SMILE. Same with Christopher Reeves as well, if Superman is serious, Clark Kent was goofy THAT WAS HIS COVER for crissake!!! because even when somebody can see the physical similarity between both Clark Kent was so goofy no one could think of him as Super Hero. But hey, there is more bad things in BvS: None of the other characters was likable, Loise Lane is boring, Alfred is boring, Lex Luthor is a DISSASTER,

They definitely under utilized Psylocke by limiting her dialogue. The only thing that was great with her was seeing her powers and especially the Psionic blade was incredible. Her action sequences were decent. She was basically a bodyguard for Caliban who in the comics is part of the Morlocks lead by Callisto and then to En Saba Nur.

I'm not usually a big proponent of unnecessarily stretching movies into two films but I keep thinking Xmen: Apocalypse would have been better if they had made it into 2 films. That would have allowed the story to have more of an opportunity to explore the character development of the villain and the his 4 horsemen, as well as allowing us to see more of the young mutants spending time at the school. Throw in some additional clashes between Apocalypse and some of the good guys, human and/or mutuants, I picture the first film ending with a dark, cliff-hanger (see the aftermath of the big scene at the mansion following the appearance of Quicksilver).

Regarding what the guys were talking about with the Captain America story about America wanting to return to some nostalgic past glory. That's a very insightful comment on Robert's part. In fact I've been looking for an answer as to why I've been listening to this one particular song ('B-Movie, by Gil Scott Heron) over and over lately. It's because, if you listen to the words, it's talking about this very thing. 'B-Movie' was an indictment of the Reagan election, and it begins with spoken word poetry over music (I also highly recommend Heron's 'Black History/The World' for a similar thing), so it's not for everyone, but I would encourage you all to look the song up, just to listen to what this guy had to say, and to think about how relevant it is today. It's really insightful as a piece of cultural history (and it's a great song to boot).

With respect to X-Men: Apocalypse, I found it entertaining as a sci-fi/action/adventure film, & very well acted overall. However, as an X-Men film...lets just say that growing up with the X-Men as one of my favorite comic books, I admit to having a very personal & emotional connection with these characters, and I have yet to see many of them portrayed in the manner I (personally) feel they should have been. Some examples would be Warren Worthington III isn't a millionaire playboy, he's a German street thug; Ororo Monroe (whose name was never mentioned, not even as "Storm"), wasn't born with white hair, it was turned white by Apocalypse; Al3x Summers isn't Scott's younger brother, he's the eldest son; Jean Grey isn't possessed with the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix, she apparently always had this god-like power inside of her. Just so many things, character wise that made me physically cringe. As for Captain America being a Hydra Agent this entire time, a begrudgingly agree. It makes for great story telling, similar to the Superior Spider-Man story arc. People hated one it with pure venom (no pun), but it turned out to be one of the greatest Spider-Man stories ever told. I only have one concern: I think the only logical way to pull this off (without die-hard fans screaming "bullshit") is have it be the result of someone tampering with his past. Time travel is probably one of the few, if not the only acceptable rational for telling a story such as this. And I give you only one reason for this: Steve Rogers is a man that is worthy enough to weild Thor's hammer. Not once, but twice. The moral fiber & devotion to honor and other virtuous values makes Steve Rogers one of the few people (human or god) in the Marvel Universe capable of even lifting Thor's hammer. So unless there was a retcon I'm not aware of, where Steve Rogers never lifted Thor's hammer (1st under the alias "The Captain" & again during the "Fear Itself" story arc), the only way to explain that someone worthy enough to lift the hammer has been a member of an organization that is in direct opposition to the very values that make it possible to lift said hammer is time travel.

I'm going to put my 2 cents in on the Captain America / Hydra issue. I have no problem with the twist. What I have issues with is the timing. Firstly an amazing Captain America movie was released a couple of weeks ago. This may actually encourage some people to look into buying Captain America comics. Second, this is a brand new Captain America #1 comic. Every comic may be someones first comic, but it is even more likely that a Captain America #1 may be some kid who is just getting into comics, is their first comic book introduction to Cap. They don't know the decades of background on the character or what this twist means or where it will probably go. All they know is that the hero on the front cover of their comic is a murderer and a traitor. And third this comic came out the Wednesday before Memorial Day. Just before the day where one is supposed to remember those who fought and died against tyranny (especially against the Nazis), Marvel comics decided to make the man known as the Sentinel of Liberty and turn him into a pseudo-Nazi who apparently has always been a sleeper Hydra agent. Basically taking the hero of my uncles and great uncles who fought and some of who died fighting the Nazis and turned him into what they hated the most. So because of these points, I cancelled my subscriptions to this and a number of other Marvel comics. I'll put my money behind comics that I can actually get behind.

I have a question. The X-Men movies, financially speaking, are not the biggest box office draws. When you look at the films' box office history they haven't really gotten much better in 16 years even with inflation and 3D prices. I think it's very telling that DOFP and Deadpool are the highest grossing movies in the franchise where DOFP had a hook that made it feel important and Deadpool felt very different than anything else to a lot of people and the marketing was great. Have the X-Men movies not evolved enough for today's market? I'm not talking about the quality of the series, but purely the box office. Am I missing something or is there some validity to what I'm saying? Granted we have to wait to see if Apocalypse performs well after it's all said and done, and I'm not trying to be the doomsayer of the franchise. It's just a legitimate question that I have.

I don't know where Schnepp goes off saying we have to wait 5 years for another X-men movie. If you look back we had X-men first class in 2011, then DOFP in 2014, and now Apocalypse only 2 years later. Maybe another year of time would of helped buffer some issues Apocalypse had. Either way that's 3 X-men films in the last 5 years. Than if you go back to 2001 we have had 9 X-men films in 16 years! And most have been either decent (Apocalypse, The Wolverine, X-men 3) to pretty damn amazing (X men, X-men 2 United, X-men First Class, X-Men days of Future Past, and now Deadpool) Honestly Fox has done a pretty damn good job with this Franchise. Competing up there with Marvel.

While the creation of Superman may have been influenced by Doc Savage, the primary source of inspiration for the character was Philip Wylie's classic novel :Gladiator".

I think there maybe be superhero fatigue only because we've had 4 big comic book movies in like 3 months I think the best possible thing for suicide squad and Dr Strange is that we now have a break for a couple of months

At no point in time has every person had a voice that could be heard by so many. I think that is what is making people feel as though their voice has more weight than it really does.

The tease to Mr. Sinister was great since he need Logan's blood so that he can create another version of the Weapon X in this case it's X-23 like in the comics. Also he is fascinated with Scott Summers and Jean Grey and through there DNA creates Cable.

Have we covered Blade II in Flashback yet? Can't remember. Because the ONLY films that should be covered are Blade and Blade II. There isn't a third movie.
