  • Welcome to the 57th Episode of Collider’s Heroes, hosted by Jon Schnepp, with regular guests John Campea, Amy Dallen, and Robert Meyer Burnett. On this episode of Collider’s Heroes (Tuesday May 10th, 2016) we discuss:
    -Hot Toys mock up of the Heroes panel!
    -Wolverine 3 set as R-Rated future story
    -Captain America: Civil War record breaking opening weekend
    -Ben Affleck set as executive producer on Justice League
    -Kevin Feige talks getting Spider-Man back at Marvel
    -Minor Mutations
    -Flashback: X-Men: First Class
    -Spotlight: Shade the Changing Man
    Wolverine is set in the R-Rated Future / Next X-Men set in the 90’s
    Simon Kinberg recently revealed that the final Hugh Jackman Wolverine is set in the future and will be close to tone like a western. The movie is already filming and has been revealed to be R-Rated. Kinberg also mentioned that the next X-Men spinoff will be set in the 90s.
    Captain America: Civil War Opens Big
    So Captain America: Civil War made 181 million here in the states, making it the 5th highest grossing movie of all time; raking in $673 worldwide. People are buzzing about Civil War, but it didn’t make as much as many people projected. Is this the beginning of Superhero Fatigue, or is it something else?
    The Batman Now Executive Producing Justice League
    Oscar winner Ben Affleck is on the creative side of things as well as in front of the camera, currently shooting Justice League. And now, WB has appointed him Executive Producer. Deadline describes his duties as supporting Zack Snyder, and will help with the script; as well as certain aspects of the shoot and heavy post production.
    Kevin Feige Talks Spider-Man Back to Marvel
    After many years and many missed opportunities, Kevin Feige recently revealed how he got Spidey back into the MCU. He said, “The only way, the best way that we could help is if you let us do it for you. It stays a Sony character and Sony pays for it and Sony makes the profits from the film and it is marketed and distributed by the entire Sony team.” Kevin then talked about why they got Tom Holland, because they wanted a high school Peter Parker, as in beginning high school, and Holland did an incredible audition across from Robert Downey Jr.

      +Francisco Navarro I thought she had a great lead in first class loved her in days of futures past but wasn't necessary that she had a lead and I don't think she should lead the x men especially since she had no lead type role in the movies especially last stand when she lost her powers

      +Francisco Navarro Fox studios upper level mgmt has never, ever, read a comic book. They force singer to make her the lead bc of her name. same reason fox made Joy. They only think movies will do good if they have a big name attached. They were only making Gambit bc Channing Tatum would be playing him. They only scrapped the film after realizing how awful the script was, as well as the idea. They still don't respect the comic genre even to this day. Fantastic 4 is the result of a studio meddling too much.

    • @TheOtakuUnderground2
      @TheOtakuUnderground2 8 років тому

      Jlaw sells tickets. Assuming Hugh isn't on the movie for very long the studio only is putting emphasis on her cause Jackman is probably only doing a small cameo. It's all about starpower to get butts in seats. I think it's odd to have her lead given we know who she becomes, but who knows given what changes have happened to the timeline.

    • @TheOtakuUnderground2
      @TheOtakuUnderground2 8 років тому

      +Ilm0n9mp0 p0c91xd3ai Not the biggest Jlaw fan, but she hasn't done bad in these movies. I think she's overrated as an actress, but that is another story entirely. The problem is with this particular movie is that Hugh Jackman is barley in besides a cameo. They put more emphasis on her because she's Jennifer Lawerence and that is star power. And recognizable actors can put butts in seats. Why do you think in the trailers they always show her as JLaw and not in her natural blue form as Mystique? I've heard she doesn't like to be in the paint for too long or something. Perhaps the studio has done this always to cater to her since she is a big star. Regardless, I'll watch cause I haven't been letdown yet, X3 wasn't a complete trainreck as most people would like to say, just bad story decisions by the writer and of course the director wasn't singer. Origins I enjoyed, but I'll admit that was a dumpster fire, but still 6 out 7 isn't bad.

    One thing about Xmen. First class was in the 60's, Days of Future Past in the 70's, Apocalypse in the 80's and now the new movie in the 90's. How do Charles Xavier, Magneto, Mystique and Beast look the same? No one looks the same for 30 years.

    In terms of what John said about Marvel doing Spiderman because they are motivated by greed, I agree they definitely want to make tons of money but it's more than that. Feige genuinely loves these characters and he wants them all back. Awhile back John was saying that Marvel has no use for Fantastic Four because the comic doesn't sell and no one is interested in the characters. I disagree, Feige wants the Fantastic Four so bad he can taste it. In hindsight we look at the MCU as this cinematic juggernaut that was destined to happen, but it was an enormous risk. many people thought it was a stupid idea actually. Feige was driven by a vision, not just greed.

    The difference is, unbiased opinion, there have been enough Marvel movies to have most people invested in the characters vs. DCEU with one movie in 3 years launching something people are expected to love. That's my thought, that's just an opinion.

  • @Gregster8626
    @Gregster8626 8 років тому +4

    Robert Meyer Burnett is right when it comes to BvS this film did not do well because it was a 3 hour film forced to cut 30 minutes out of it. I honestly feel once the 3 hour cut comes out in July it could be like Once Upon A Time in America in terms of critics going from hatred of the film to it being seen as the best in it's genre. WB could've hit a billion with a 3 hour version it would have just taken a couple more weeks (I would say literally up to Civil War coming out so 7 or 8 weeks).

    • @MarvellousMorbing
      @MarvellousMorbing 8 років тому

      BVS needed a major makeover , not sure if ppl will stay in the theatre for 3 hours straight..

    • @Warhaawk
      @Warhaawk 8 років тому

      +Greg Beck Even if it's significantly better with the three hour version, how much of the blame in what was cut to edit it to the shorter length for theatrical release comes to Snyder and how much to WB. Because there are more than a few sequences in the movie (such as the dream stuff) which could have been edited out rather than scenes that might have been important to the actual storyline.

    I honestly do believe there is a 'Super hero' fatigue, not a comic book fatigue but only when the themes covered are a little 'samey' and 'unimaginative'. As Jon pointed out, Kingsman is a comic book property. As long as the films are diverse I don't mind. However, I have felt it a bit myself this year when I've wondered whether Super hero films are almost precluding more interesting smaller films. I s'pose that, like every other genre, the Super hero craze will come and go, it's nothing to worry about. I do think that one of the great strengths of Super-hero films and also comic book films in general, is the vast amount of sub-genres (Spy thriller, comedy, western etc, etc) that can be incorporated within their narrative structures, there really is no limit to what can be covered, be it deadly serious allegory or ridiculously funny hi-jinx (Wow, I actually used the term 'Hi-Jinx'....The Big Time..At Last! :)

    I love BvS and Ben Affleck is the best batman ive ever seen. I agree that DC/Warner Bros needs a head of some kind and im alright with it being Affleck. But will he have time? He also has to direct other movies including batman and other passion pieces, he has to act in other movies. I don't think hell have enough time a day to do it. Especially with him giving his all to every movie he does. They need someone whos sole job is to produce DC movies.

    Schnepp- I appreciate an respect your opinion when you say you don't like how they are doing Superman, me personally i don't mind it. They took inspiration from Secret Origin, Birthright, and a few others. Not to say that just because they pull form the comics its fine, but this version has no reason to be the Christopher reeve happy superman- Not yet. Cavill has stated this superman is still learning and will grow into a more accessible one as time goes on.

    I have a question (Be nice, Internet): Everyone places the blame on Snyder for the poor reception, odd edits and confusing story, but shouldn't a lot of that blame go to writers and editors as well? I know he is the director, but where does his control end?
    He's there to get certain performances from the actors, make edits on set and bring the screenplay/storyboard to life. My point being, Snyder didn't' single-handedly destroy the movie (even though I enjoyed it), I'm sure he has some part in it, but it seems wrong to solely blame him for something that was written and edited poorly when the performances were all great!

      +Darren On-Air & VO For me, it's difficult because I liked MOS, so I know he has it in him, but at the same time when I hear his interviews and philosophy on the character it gets mucky, because it's like he's still in the mindset of doing what _he_ wants, and not thinking of the grander universe. Now, don't get me wrong, I'm totally behind the character designs, because they're just outfits, but the characters need work because it's not a single trilogy for him to play with.

    Civil War is a great movie to me mainly because they told a heavy, consequence filled story in the movie that had stakes without sacrificing who the characters were at their core. As serious as it was Cap was still Cap, Tony was still Tony, Black Widow was still Black Widow, and the developing supporting cast such as Scarlet Witch and vision has growing and emerging story arcs that fit perfectly into the main story yet pushed their character development forward. The two new characters such as Spidey and Black Panther had incredible screen presence as well. T'Challa felt like Royalty and a badass from his first scene and Spidey's humor was spot on. Just my opinion but I loved the movie.

    I think Ben Affleck being a executive producer is a great idea. Look I really enjoyed BVS and many didn't, lets be honest I think Synder added way too much stuff to the movie while in process of filming it. Sure fans would love to watch a 3 hour movie in theater, but critics would complain and it would hurt the movie. Somebody needs to keep Zack in check due to what he puts in the movie and if it fits the story they trying to tell. Every movie there is always something being taking out due to setting up the run time for the movie.

      If you watch one of the interviews with him or his wife, they talked about adding things that weren't in the script..nothing wrong with that but if you know the studio is going to tell you have to cut the film down due to run time, you don't want it to screw up with the story flow. Plus original the movie was suppose to be what 3 or 4 hours long.

    I'd like it to be Death of Wolverine. I know the movies have been kinder to Logan than the comics, but actually seeing him die the way he did and that it stuck (for the main universe's version so far) was so touching because the pain in his life was finally at an end. I want him to have a happy ending in his send-off. Old Man Logan, while a great story and really fucked up, has no happy ending.

    I'm with Campea on this one - I've been saying this for months now - We don't need a Black Widow or Hawkeye solo movie(s). They're great sidekick characters, but I don't wanna see them star in their own movie. Will I see the movie if Marvel makes it? Of course I will. But we don't need it.

    • @vandalistica
      @vandalistica 8 років тому +1

      +Sailor Borsha I don't think they will. With the current line up ending and all the new IP's to come, besides introducing Spider-man, they aren't exactly hard up for material. Besides, they are as fleshed out in the movies they're in to not need stand alone movies. Enough at least make us enjoy them when they're on screen.

      +vandalistica I definitely enjoy both Black Widow and Hawkeye, especially in Civil War, but yeah, they're as fleshed out as they can be. Unless they need to be sent on a solo mission in some point in the future, I don't think they need solo movies.

    Just recently read Old Man Logan, makes you wish marvel had things together before they sold the movie rights to some of their franchises at the time, especially X-Men despite some great movies that came out. Would have been amazing to see this story. Man if they just had all their toys. Eventually they'll be able to. Just hope it's in my lifetime.

    The woman speaking about Superman after the Africa incident is actually fairly straight forward - and it fits whether she is a Luthor paid actress or connected via family.
    "The women in the village heard a noise, like the sky cracked open." - So this is a second hand account, she wasn't there. And the first the villagers nearby knew anything was happening, was when Superman broke the sound barrier as he arrived. Luthors men killed a lot of people and then left, as Superman arrived to save Lois.
    "He came down, so many dead." - They don't know Superman didn't kill anyone. Many people are ignorant about many things - we see it all the time in daily life. An alien cracks open the sky above, and afterwards you are attacked by the government/warlords. "Even worse came after. The government attacked, no mercy in the villages. My parents tried to run." - why wouldn't you blame the biggest component of that event? You all blame Zack Snyder for his "failure" because he is the biggest component of the film - we are wired to think about causality. In fact, if you consider it, they are not blaming Superman for the killing I don't think. They are blaming him for getting involved at all - if he didn't involve himself, would the government have retaliated?
    This whole scene is to set up the status quo from humanities perspective. We've seen what this God like figure is doing around the world - but we also arent sure about it. There hasn't been a conversation with him at this point - literally the reason for the Capitol hearing is so they can have a conversation with Superman, find out why/when/how he acts. Discuss his position in the world. Most people that have met him or been saved by him, or choose to be optimistic (like so many of us refuse to be, when we pan this film because it isn't happy go lucky), believes he is good. We know that. "Most of the world doesn't share your opinion, Mr Wayne."
    It's not perfect, and the additional 30 mins will be a godsend. I hope it fleshes some of it out. But a lot of the answers are there if people care to look.

    As much as I would LOVE to see Affleck be the head of the DCEU, part of the reason why I love the DCEU is because it's different from Marvel, and Affleck doesn't seem like he's up for that huge task. Snyder should be kept on visuals, Affleck should be kept on executive producer, and keep things the way they are. As far as BvS, I do realize it's a movie that had problems, but I still loved it. It wouldn't be a shocker if most of the complains about that movie were because of the time cut from the movie.

      im sorry man, but that sounds boring at this point. the MCU is cosmic at this point, micro dimensions, magic is already in it with Scarlet Witch and about to go into over drive with Dr. Strange coming up, all of these Earth affecting super humans are running around, and now people want to do a james bond-esqe black widow movie, even worse, if they went your route and did a prequel. we are just going to have to agree to disagree but Widow is best as a support role at this point, like a good plate of grilled asparagus along side a $60 steakhouse steak.

    • @kingofdemise666
      @kingofdemise666 8 років тому

      ***** They cut out about 12 minutes of the Knightmare sequence (The mission to get the Kryptonite and why it matters so much). Some of the action set pieces were shortened. Mainly the intro to batman. I think they'll have the full interrogation scene where he get the information(torture and full branding from the beginning of the movie) on the White Portuguese in the ultimate edition. That's why I think it's going to get an R-rating. Also the scenes where Lex talks to Steppen Wolf and gets orders to kill Superman. Lastly they probably cut some of the other videos from The Meta human files to shorten the time by a huge bit. Did you see how many files he had on each one of the metas. I guarantee he looked at all of them.

    Wolverine, in his purest, truest form in the comics, is a feral nightmare of a creature, drenched in blood, standing amid the severed bodyparts of his enemies. This HAS never, and WILL never happen without an R rating. And I, for one, AM ESTATIC that decision was made. It's about fucking time we get to see him and not the kiddified 'clean-kill' CRAP we've been given as a half-measure for 15 years. If it takes an R rating to give us a proper wolverine, then so be it.
