Who would have thought the Des Moines, Iowa have so much to offer. One of this country best kept secret. Will definitely put as one of my bucket list of places to visit.
The Iowa state fair is one of the best in the nation it’s ranked 4 or 5th best of you ever come to Iowa
I suggest taking some time to hit the state parks too. Ledges is exceptionally beautiful.
I live in Texas for all my 49 years but would go up every summer to see my grandparents. Me and my siblings were born in Iowa in fact the same hospital in Cedar Rapids. I love all your videos but my most favorite is when you have wife with you!! Traveling around is great when you share the moments with the one your heart is with
Des Moines is a very elegant city and their state capitol is the most spectacular of all the state capitols.
Whats elegant about it? The architecture is square boxy and lacks imagination. Iowa restaurants lack flavor. If it wasn't for caseys pizza and brats u iowans would starve. The people are nice but clicky the saying is.. in iowa high school never ends. And don't me started on tailgating is the driving standard.
Thank you for showing us the Des Moines sights and buildings. I enjoyed the walk through the Art park and the State buildings. It inspires me to go to Iowa at some point in my life. Thank you.

Interesting Fact is Des Moines Iowa wasn't the original state capital which was Iowa City so there are 2 Capitol buildings in Iowa I'm from Des Moines.

Wow, I never thought I would be able to see a trip to the top of the Capital again. When I was a kid it was open to the public, it was great going up there climbing over that false dome hanging in space. It was sad when they closed it to the public. Living in the Philippines now it was a thrill to see it again as it was in the 1960s!

I couldn't stop laughing when a dog ran at you chasing you down on your bike😄😄😄! The World's largest truck stop was really cool! Looks like you could spend a whole day there. So Cleveland is next? Really nice video! I grew up in the Des Moines area and lived in Iowa most of my life. My Dad helped design and build the I-80 truck stop.
Thank you for such a kind representation of my city. There is always more to be seen, as with any city, with spaces of interesting history and getting to know people behind businesses...many, many small businesses with a passion for what they do and are... but you took me to a place at the Capitol that I'd never seen at that top most point! As a child all of the domes were gold leaf. I remember it being lit up gloriously during a Presidential election year... it was truly amazing.
The East Village is an interesting place... the Western Court Avenue district somewhat stalled for a time with different opinions on how to further develop. In the meantime a "grass roots", almost Bohemian vibe, took the East Village... with people setting up eclectic shops.
And the some areas on the southern side of downtown were old, abandoned warehouses that were reclaimed into new life.

Loved the video. In Rockbridge County Va there is a White’s Truck Stop along interstate 81/64. It bills itself as the largest truck stop on the east coast. This Iowa truck stop must be massive! Great job!

When a jar of something is difficult to open, like that tomato sauce, just flip the jar upside down and give the bottom of the jar one good slap, turn it right side up and the lid will pop right off.

Ah, home. Peace Tree Brewing in the East Village is my local brewery of choice. Had a beer and a nice discussion with Senator Warren there ahead of the 2020 caucuses.
Other cool things to check out- The Salisbury House & Gardens, The Art Center, The Science Center, The Heritage Carousel, The Botanical Gardens, Gray's Lake & Water Works Park, The Historical Building, Blank Park Zoo...
Slightly outside Des Moines: Historic Valley Junction in West Des Moines, Saylorville Lake (camping grounds, bike/hike trails, visitors center, Camp Dodge military base/museum, Jester Park Nature Center) in Johnston, Living History Farms in Urbandale, Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge in Prairie City, and a bunch of historic stuff in Boone including the Historic Valley Railroad and Ledges State Park.
Oh, and the Amana Colonies in Amana!
That's all assuming you've been to the Iowa State Fair already! Also, you should find a rodeo. And some figire 8 races. Just spend a couple months in the summer, stay for the fall hay rack rides at the pumpkin patches in the fall, and only leave after you've see all the historical brick neighborhoods decked out in Christmas lights. That should about cover it..

You missed a few things in Des Moines, you think our governor's mansion is something. One of the most beautiful mansions is right in the same neighborhood. The Salsbury house is open to tours. You also missed the farmers market which runs about 5 months. The Iowa State Fair is one of the biggest in the US.

Hey Robert, happy Sunday! Nice to re-visit Des Moines in this episode. I was there in '05 to go to the Iowa State Fair. (Pork chop on a stick--yum!) Loved the tour of the capitol especially up to the top of the dome, what a treat! I've spent the night at the Iowa 80 truck stop in an RV...very noisy with the trucks running their engines all night long.
By the way, I think the "eagle" you saw might have been an osprey. Until next week, happy trails!
