Yeah, when your on gravel and you see people ahead waving at you, best to slow it down some. They are probably frantically waving to keep from getting inundated with your road dust.

i've also waved in a respectful way while driving it was like a 2 fingers up on the steering wheel type wave. most who drive gravel roads know to slow down cause ya never know whos gonna pop up over the hill or around the corner and out of respect ya dont need to dust them out when ya pass each other .its just common courtesy.

Absolutely true. I'm a native of Iowa, living in Minnesota, and that peculiarity called "Minnesota Nice" is a misnomer. To be "Minnesota Nice" means "pretending not to see something, yet making it clear that you did." For example, a motorist who breaks down on the roadside. The perfect "Minnesota Nice" response is to continue driving at the same speed, and looking straight ahead, but moving ever so slightly to the left as you pass.

lifelong iowan here. I'm moving to try something new but I will always have pride in this peaceful place. Northeast Iowa is one of the most beautiful places in the US in my incredibly biased opinion. Further from the Mississippi there are gorgeous little towns like Anamosa (grant wood country), Decorah (Norwegian af), Elkader, and Strawberry Point. Then on the river are a bunch of picturesque river towns like Guttenburg, McGregor, Marquette (Effigy Mounds National Monument), Lansing, and of course the queen of all of them, Dubuque. The whole state is a seriously unique and beautiful place that most Iowans I know take for granted. It's pretty common for people to leave when they're young and then return. There's just something about it. Probably the breakfast pizza.

Definitely take advantage of discussion sections in class, that's where you can learn a lot from your classmates and your classmates learn a lot from you. Iowa City is a wonderful city to live in and you can walk just about anywhere on campus. There is also a free bus system that will take you anywhere you need to go (especially useful in the winter). My main suggestion for winter is to get a good winter jacket ($100+), and really good winter boots with good traction. The neighboring town Coralville had a store called Scheels. They have anything you could possibly need for winter. Good luck!

Lived in Iowa for seven years (Cedar Rapids, Iowa City) and I can attest to the great people of Iowa, the wonderful quality of life and simplicity (lack of traffic, cost of living, quality of education, place to raise a family) and the strong sense of state pride. Weather isn’t perfect in the summer or winter or during the bug seasons but, on balance, it’s a great place to live. Agree it is widely misunderstood by many as just fly over country. However, Iowans are quite happy with where they live and consider it a best kept secret.

Lived in Iowa for 50 years and counting: Never had Casey’s breakfast pizza, I put ketchup on a Maid Rite, gravel road trips are one of my favorites, we are pretty nice, the tractor you see probably cost more than both of our houses put together, and why didn’t he mention the Field of Dreams? Don’t ya’ll show up at the same time; we do like our peace and quiet. 🙂 🚜 🌽 ❤️

Iowa is a great place to go with kids. The Iowa State Fair is a lot of fun! The National Balloon Classic (hot air balloons) in Indianola is beautiful. Tulip Time in Pella has a great parade that showcases the local marching bands. Adventureland in Altoona, Iowa is a fun amusement park without the crazy costs and lines of Disney or Cedar Point. :)

Pro tip from Amsterdam here : Eat the "Dutch Letters" , basically what we would simply call "Banketstaaf" in the shape of a letter, on the 5th of December. This is the holy day of St. Nicholas or "Sinterklaas" and one of the most important holidays in The Netherlands. Thats when we usually eat that stuff, or the weeks leading up to the day is fine too.

The city of Decorah is a beautiful town that hosts the event of, Nordic Fest. I wish that I lived in this part of my state. Perhaps, I may be able to afford a house and retire in this awesome area of Iowa.
