  • In this video, I cover the HP Dev One - a new software developer laptop in the body of a ZBook with a Linux OS. Crazy, right? What's crazier is that it was kinda released secretly. Check out my thoughts in this video and leave your own in the comments.

That is not the body of a ZBook. It is an EliteBook 835 G8.

I thought that too then I looked into it closely. HP uses basically the same chasis for the elitebook 845 G8 and the ZBook Firefly g8, but I'd say it's closer to the Firefly due to the space gray color.

I bought this computer, the screen is quite awful. The viewing angles reminiscent of a bad TN display and there is a sort of fuzziness to letters, I decided to return it. There also is not a middle button to go with the trackpoint which makes it useless. I wish Lenovo would once again make good repairable laptops, like the old Thinkpads.

It sounds like you got a dud. And yes the screen utilizes HP's privacy screen tech which is beloved by some and hated by others. For me, it'd be a win due to high brightness, but I'm sorry you didn't like it.

@@andysilvers9532 Yeah, maybe! I've read others complaining about the viewing angles too. The thing with the privacy screen is that no where in the specs on the HP Dev One site does it anywhere say it has a privacy screen. I've seen it repeated by others, but HP doesn't say it anywhere that I have found.

@@PiceaSitchensis I agree. HP doesn't state that there's a privacy screen. That's because they pulled some of the technology from their EliteBook privacy displays without going all in. The final result is a compromise that works for some but not others. At $880, it's still a strong deal.

@@andysilvers9532 Yeah I agree for the specs, definitely a good deal. If the screen was not such low quality I would keep it. My ten year old thinkpad has a better screen : (

5mins for the review to start? Dude...

Kinda. The video is more of an editorial, not a review. Much of the first 5 minutes is dedicated to setup for anyone like me who had never even heard about the device. Thx.

@@andysilvers9532 Maybe just take it as emotional outburst of someone who wanted clear cut information and was kinda used to get it presented almost everytimes this way.
