  • In this video, I cover the new Microsoft Surface Studio 2+. It is the update to the 2018 Studio 2, and it has already sparked controversy and disagreement online. While I think Microsoft could do better, especially with the price, I think the Studio 2+ is pretty good as is. Let me know what you think. Please like and Subscribe.

I own two SS2‘s in my business which only uses 2D graphic applications only and I’m really, really happy with them. In that context, they are, as you rightly say, MORE than powerful enough. It’s worth mentioning however that they were both purchased second-hand, as I would never pay full price for one of these. Both the SS2 and the SS2+ are simply too expensive for the computing power you get. Let’s say the screen alone is worth 2,500, or even 3000. but for the extra 1500 - 2000, you could get so much more upgradeable desktop computer. For me, the bottom line is that the touch panel is unlike anything else on the market, and my business has experienced massive workflow improvements based on it. I needed it and found a way to have it at justifiable expense. Like everyone else, I wish we could get it separately and attach our own computing solution, but while we wait for that development, people who need this touch panel should pick up an SS2 or SS2+ on Ebay, second hand, where they occasionally appear in mint condition at huge discounts, probably because some folks are buying them with misguided expectations for the wrong applications. I think your assessment of the ideal use cases is spot on, but that MSRP vs. Value proposition is still off-putting for most people, in contrast to which, a Surface Studio Display would almost certainly sell like hotcakes.

I got the Surface Studio 2 when it first came out 4 years ago so I'd claim to have a valid opinion on the internet about the Studio. First it isn't good value, or very powerful. I had to buy a used HP z840 with a pair of P6000 gpu because the compute power of the SS2 isn't good enough for any of the tensor compute heavy ai applications that are prevalent in graphics orientated workflows. The SS2+ will also struggle with these workloads as the cooling solution cannot be upgraded because of the system form factor. SS2 struggles with heat and noise during heavy workloads, probably unnoticeable in a noisy office but irritating in a quiet room. The display is amazing, but the SS2 isn't HDR, the SS2+ i assume has HDR but it will be 500 nit pseudo HDR in all likelihood, utterly unable to compete with the Dell UP3221q with 2000 micro led HDR I now use with the HP Z840 or the Apple XDR displays. The SS2/+ masquerades as a professional device but has nothing to offer except maybe to photographers.

I agree completely. That's why I recommend the device for 2d artists and animations.

Well from other reviews they say it’s not as bad as the previous one and it works really good

I just don't get it ... its so expensive and yet they do t go full tilt. Just give us the surface studio display, so real pros can use pc power with that fantastic touch screen experience.
