Ive seen my cat do the same shit stalking a squarrel, every time it looks at her she pretends not to be interested in it to let it lower its guard again, if you see a big cat like this dont ever take your eyes off, back away until its out if view
@brandon I've heard the advice of back away while facing your body towards it, but I think the best thing to do would be to straight up challenge them. Stand straight, put your arms and legs wide, yell, throw things at him, be annoying and ironically predatory towards him. Predators don't hunt predators. Maybe even chase them when they have THEIR back turned. Give them the sheer doubt of even attempting.
Whatever you do, dont run away, i.e. do not turn your back on a cat. Its an invitation and you cant outrun them anyway. I think the stare down, behaving like the opposite of prey is the best thing to do. Noise is likely a great way to irritate and confuse a cat of that size. Probably none of that will work with bigger cats than moutain lions, though. 😅
The scary thing is, you don't know when it's safe to turn your back. Yes, the lion was walking away, but there's nothing stopping it from just finding another place to resume stalking you and waiting for the moment you turn your back. Beautiful animal and footage, but a terrifying situation for sure!
That's what my fat ass cat does when he just got done eating his food, and wants to eat something I have sitting on the outdoor table. He gets as close as possible not looking at me or the food, plops down and rolls around until I turn my head. As soon as I turn my head, he creeps forward more, plops down rolling around and licking himself as if he hasn't a care for anything. When he gets close enough, and I'm still pretending to have my head turned. The gloves come off and he goes right for it. I turn back to him quickly and he freezes completely. Staring at me. Then backs away when I dont turn around again cuz he knows the j8g is up.
@@cattfishing Easier to just give cat what it wants, they can be mercilessly persistent. Avoiding eye contact only delays the inevitable. Me? I'm an indentured servant to a cat.

I did just that, a few years ago. I was outside at night and alone. I got freaked out more about a bear coming up on me. And then a day later, I read in the news someone was attacked and injured by a bear about 5 miles from where I was at. So my fears were justified.

As someone who lives in the Rockies of CO, cougars are absolutely man-eating cats. If you ever encounter one, always keep eye contact and that'll often discourage it from stalking you.
These cats are the scariest thing in our woods; bears and wolves don't hunt humans, they almost always attack out of territorial issues, maternal instinct, or if you startle them when they come looking for your food. If you're careful, make noise while hiking, keep a clean camp you'll never have a problem with them. Big cats on the other hand, they want to eat you and especially your easy target children.
Yeah bears are a huge fear. But just like anything you go into these hikes positive and clear headed. If you worry about something chanves are it will happen. If you don't, you're most likely safe. But we carry bear spray, and other forms of protection.

The secret here is to counter stalk them, make eye contact with these cats and do not run or else they will think you are easy prey. You have to make them believe that you are the stalker and that they are the prey or else you are dead!
Do not move closer, do not turn your back. If you move closer and the cat has nowhere to run... This cat luckily had space to get out. So glad he did not take a shot at it.

Turning around and running away would be a death sentence, which is why the lion keeps "looking away" then immediately looks back at him, to check if he stopped staring.
Seeing their prey run away activates some primal instinct in them to chase, but if you keep staring them down, then they might not go into such an extreme "chase mode"

Since you kept eye contact he took that as a signal that your also a predator and that your ready to fight. If you would've ran after seeing him he would've attacked because running is what his prey do when they see him. What an encounter.
Yep. Cougars dont want to fight anything, especially something as big as an adult male human. They want to ambush prey off guard or chase down a fleeing target.

@Gi Gi you should still carry some amount of protection. A gun is best. But if your anti gun. Or can't get a gun. Bear spray Is a good alternative. Also when I back back through the mountains. I like to keep a fire hardened spear with a two prong fork on the other end to use against snakes. And it makes for a hell of a walking stick. In conclusion. Never venture off into the wild without some form of protection.
@@klounpound6945 Exactly. If it's your only option or you're anti-gun then at the very least you should have bear spray. Leaving yourself with no option for protection other than what you may be able to grab off the ground by your feet is a dangerous gamble to take.

As someone who lives in the Rockies of CO, cougars are absolutely man-eating cats. If you ever encounter one, always keep eye contact and that'll often discourage it from stalking you.
More people have been struck by lightning twice in their lifetimes than eaten by P. concolor
Cute little kitty gets spotted and is like “oh shit this tiny Little Rock isn’t covering my entire body ?”
My Huge body
The creepy thing is that the tiny rock was able to cover so much of its body.
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and no have it.
The cat just looks at him like "hay"
So grateful to live in Britain. I don't get how people can hike knowing predators are around. Especially bears
Were not pussy cats. And own firearms that can protect us from wild ravenous creatures, such as tyrannical governments.
Well, even in England, danger is not unreal in the woods.Once i was barely eaten alive ,by a roe deer, near to Kielber campsite,in Northaberland!!! ;)
Yeah bears are a huge fear. But just like anything you go into these hikes positive and clear headed. If you worry about something chanves are it will happen. If you don't, you're most likely safe. But we carry bear spray, and other forms of protection.
Its called Balls. Grow some
Crazy. Every time you moved, he stopped. So, when he is moving away, don’t make a move or a sound. He will keep going. Cats are curious. I have seen these videos before. He didn’t act aggressive. He was just curious...and certainly not afraid.
Even with a pistol I’m not sure I would have been able to stay so calm in this situation. I’m glad it ended well for both though because I wouldn’t have wanted either to lose that stand off. Beautiful cat.
I agree. I think I'm the type to hysterically run away screaming aka. the type to get eaten/mauled by a mountain lion 😂
