Cougars are one of the most curious predators out there. They tend to examine creatures they encounter and size them up for what kind of value they offer. I know cougars in Texas are less likely to hunt livestock than they are to hunt wild prey. The main reason is because to the Cougar, a herd of cattle seems a lot more threatening than a lone boar and unlike a true African Lion that is far larger and usually has a pride for teamwork taking on herds- Cougars hunt alone and even they realize that groups of prey are harder to hunt. Because of this- Cougars need to analyze their prey first and ensure it is an easy meal. This makes them hesitant to kill right away, but also makes them stay longer and be less likely to budge from loud noises as their intention is to study you. To the predator, humans are just like upright squawking birds. Eventually they realize it's just a display- but are still to cautious to charge upfront so they wait for you to tire yourself out and turn around. That's why in this video the Cougar tried to appear docile and just lay down to wait until he were done, then they would have pounced. They are dangerously patient that way. It's a case that goes to show how sometimes predators can be too smart for their own good- But not smart enough to know what humans can have on hand to protect ourselves.
@@wyzanagui7140 I've often wondered about that. Just marching toward them defiantly and aggressively, but slowly enough to show you are establishing dominance, not rushing them. It's something that came to me when I felt one was in the area. I started stomping the ground and marching. Thank god I don't think there was an animal. lol..
@@wyzanagui7140 That would probably back it up and may do you some good in the situation. These animals are far less likely to attack face up especially when something is showing no fear at engagement.

Someone that will run away and not get aggressive right back and appear to be willing to put up a fight!! I do find it very unusual for the animal to not run off, because they usually avoid humans so why did this cat even consider this guy to be a possible meal?? He didn’t look skinny but I wonder if this was a female that had cubs to feed
I applaud you for waiting as long as you did, but I also applaud you for taking the shot. You didn't take the shot until you thought you were about to properly go over the edge and lose control of yourself or the cougar. But I also applaud the fact that you didn't wait to take the shot when the cougar pounced, but took the shot before she pounced. If you thought you could have waited to take the shot during her attack, it's highly likely you would have missed your mark and have been killed. And even if you somehow created a miracle and got your mark, you would still probably have gotten injured before it succumbed. You took the shot at a time when you were able to make the kill and when you had the control of yourself and the cougar. In my eyes, you did everything right. I hate seeing them killed, and I can see that you do too. You're a responsible hunter, a compassionate altruistic unselfish hunter, as well as a smart and practical one. And where the hell was Rob! Just joking lol
Couldn’t have said it better man. Obviously anyone would be scared facing down a cougar, but this man held his cool and tried his best to give the cougar many attempts at backing off. It’s a shame that cougar was just too hungry.
warning shot with a bow wouldn't scare a puma off really its too quiet. this dude gave the cougar a chance people saying otherwise are stupid. I'm against hunters blasting predators for no given reason but this dude was yelling at it for nearly 10 minutes and it was displaying classic predatory behavior of a lion. some are just curious and fearless but this was different, this cat was obviously sizing him up and wondering if it was worth it to attack. probably starving.
Up until recently, in my state (PA) you could not carry any kind of gun while bowhunting ....... not even if you were licensed for Concealed Carry. Many times - LAW trumps common sense!
I never got to see the one that pounced me until too late. Bear spray saved me. Things I learned that day- Don't go out alone if possible, make noise so they hear you and leave, carry a weapon or bear spray, dont wear red-they think you're wounded and an easy meal, if you have pets at home wear fresh clothing without pet hair-you will smell like their choice snack, look behind you often, don't bend down to pick up cool rocks, walk briskly with a purpose-don't wander slowly down the trail, yelling and screaming is useless, smashing them in the head with your cell phone only breaks your phone and you can't call for help, never run-it triggers their instinct to chase you, if you find a dead animal leave the area-it may be protecting its kill. 2 surgeries later, I'm hiking the trails again but much more aware. I won't go without bear spray! Avoid spraying yourself, you'll practically suffocate and it doesn't wash off or wear off for days, people will have watery eyes and burning throat from being around you. You will also be photographed by every wildlife agency and law enforcement, then they lock'n'load and hunt down the cat. Lose-lose for all. The 'fear' the animals smell is the cortisol chemical your body releases when you're terrified. Learn from my mistake and don't end up like me. Happy trails!🐾
Cougar even played with his head by getting in a pouncing stance and then just casually walking towards him...lol...dude freaked out when he saw that stance..lol..
Why do so many people get upset at a human defending themselves from animals? I get that animals are cuter but that doesn't make them more in the right. Humans are apart of nature we shouldn't take ourselves out of it and just try to be overlords protecting it.
Well that's not really what's going on here. If he wanted to defend himself, he could have shot the cat at any time. He's trying to teach her to stay away from humans for her own good. It's quite possible that some human fed this cat before and that removed her fear of humans. This is not the behavior that a predator behaves toward prey. This is a naive cat who casually approaches humans with guns.
White Guy 45... modern day has you confused, before all this technology making society soft as fuck.. we used to catch our own food.. the world was everyone’s domain.. now you sit at home in front of your tv eating processed, genetically modified meat telling someone “stay out of the mountain lions territory” you just better hope nothing happens such as economy collapse, war..nothing to make you fend for yourself or you’re fucked and will probably starve since you think humans don’t belong in the wild..
I am with you 100% on this comment. I would never value and animal life over a human being. People would have been coming for his neck if he had a gun and shot the cat.
Gena Holden I get your outrage but can I ask you something. If the world goes to shit tomorrow, due to war, natural disaster etc.. how do you expect to feed yourself? You do know we come from a long line of hunter gatherers right? I get it, you don’t want to hunt because you feel we don’t have too but you can’t force people to eat genetically modified meats. I see the arguments on both side but I feel hunters win it easily. Modern society makes you feel like we don’t belong in the wild but we do, that’s where we come from.

This cat was ready to take you down. To be able to even catch footage like this is very very rare indeed. I'm glad you came through this encounter. What you now have is a very important piece of video.
Having been face to face with a cougar holding a gun, one thing I can guarantee is that air horn will feel awfully inadequate in your hand at that point in time. If the animal is as close as it appears in the video, making a loud noise hardly guarantees it won't get startled and attack. At that range I wouldn't even risk a warning shot, even though that has worked successfully for me at more distance.
@@fiveowaf454 I've always said that a gun is actually better for the animals too, because you never have to actually use it on them if you are paying attention to your surroundings anyway. The noise from a warning shot will scare the shit out of any animal and it won't hurt them at all. Whereas bear spray will seriously fuck up an animals nose and eyes which they need to hunt food. Much more humane to carry a gun.
@@charlesritter6640 Paying attention to your surroundings is always key anywhere, but for certain using a warning shot early on in proceedings ensures everyone goes home safely and still helps make the animal wary of humans. Having to wait until an animal moves in and then spraying it with bear spray is not without many negatives for the animal and therefore should be avoided if possible. Personally I think if dangerous animal encounters are likely (particularly big bears), having a firearm and spray is the way to go then you have all bases covered. If I can only have one, I'm going with the gun.
Same. Would have been pretty sad to have finally chased it off, then hours, and many more "ROB!"s later, he finds rob, mauled to death by the very cat he chased away.
guitpizz was only a pellet gun too lucky it even done enough to stop the cat must’ve been strong cause most pellet guns they use on foxes and coyotes would only anger a cat that big😂
Anyone who questions the intentions of this cat aren’t paying attention to the change in the cats approach. The beginning the cat is more curious and sizing him up determining the risks in attack. At some point the cat decided it was going to go through and on it’s final approach the cat is focused and showing teeth most prey at this point will try and escape and the predator does what it’s made to do. This guy made the right choice and a critical moment he was surely about to be a cougar kill
100%. Totally worth it but I bet he went through a lot of trouble after this. He sounds Canadian and I don’t know the laws there but if you kill a cat in the states you can get in a lot of trouble unless you have total proof that you were in danger, good on him for getting all this on video, he may have went to jail if he didn’t.
I have two 10 lb house cats. The level of athleticism and viciousness they display whenever they're hunting something is amazing. Something that is seven or eight times their size (The one in this video might even be a bit bigger than that) hunting me with that same level of cold, calculated ferocity and athleticism is absolutely terrifying.
I'm glad you survived man. You are an amazing guy for waiting so long before shooting the arrow. You truly care for animals, even to the point where you risk your own life. This animal seemed young and inexperienced. You taking a shot at it, may have saved somebody elses life, because it may be more wary now before approaching humans.

So anyone bashing this guy shut the hell up and go find yourself a full grown male mountain Lion and let us know how u feel after the encounter if you are still alive
I'm with you man. I had an encounter with one at ten yards and he wouldn't back off until he was point blank and I drew on him. You realize quick your not the apex predator and in a serious situation.
It's super easy to "arm chair quarterback" in a situation like this, when we're not facing the same threats in real time. My hat is off to him. Great restraint, and the right decision. That cat was clearly predatory. The one thing I think I would have done differently (again, easy to say that NOW), would have been to throw rocks or sticks or something at the cat. Every time it advanced and the only response it got was yells, it became bolder. At the end of the day, though, major props to him. I'd be happy to be in the woods with him anytime.
Honestly he probably had his bow drawn and on that cat the entire time, I wouldn't want to let go to pick up some rocks incase the cat decides to charge. I could imagine in the situation I would feel a lot better with the arrow trained and ready to fire, as he does at the end of the video.
@@ddplzz Ten minutes would be a heck of a long time to hold a bow at full draw. I don't think that was probably the case here. I can see your point, though. The cat might interpret bending over to get a rock or stick as an opportunity.

i love mountain lions. and would never hunt one ( i bow hunt small game and such) or any predator cause i wouldn't eat them. I don’t think he killed the animal but he didn’t have much choice but to shoot at the cougar because it was in hunting mode and he wanted to eat this guy! I find this a little unusual because they usually avoid humans so I wonder if the cat was younger and just decided hey I am going to see if this is an easy meal and had not seen humans before, but the cat looked like he was getting enough food to eat and he didn’t look skinny, so I find it odd that he didn’t turn tail and run off!! Could this be a female who has cubs to feed??? That could be a possible reason why the animal was so bold.
Shingeki no Propane he is very lucky to be alive I have heard of a story of 3 rhino poachers that were armed with elephant guns and the wardens could not find them. They came across the poachers campsite and it was ripped to shreds then they started finding body parts along with their weapons and ammunition. They found the poachers had become dinner for a pride of lions!! These guys were armed at the teeth and they still ended up as dinner!!!

Joshua Manzanares . You smokeing dude ?
Agreed on all accounts
Ashen Wynter Perfectly stated 👏🏽

@@wyzanagui7140 I've often wondered about that. Just marching toward them defiantly and aggressively, but slowly enough to show you are establishing dominance, not rushing them.

Agreed. Anyone who complains about him killing that cougar is an idiot, I am sorry I never would have waited that long.

Why do so many people get upset at a human defending themselves from animals? I get that animals are cuter but that doesn't make them more in the right. Humans are apart of nature we shouldn't take ourselves out of it and just try to be overlords protecting it.
Well that's not really what's going on here. If he wanted to defend himself, he could have shot the cat at any time. He's trying to teach her to stay away from humans for her own good. It's quite possible that some human fed this cat before and that removed her fear of humans. This is not the behavior that a predator behaves toward prey. This is a naive cat who casually approaches humans with guns.
You shouldnt be in their territory

@@bammargera8643 I know right? Only morons go into the woods w/o a gun, or at the very least take some bear spray .
This guy handled it much better then I ever have. If a mountain lion inches forward that’s no less then a warning shot.

Right, f*ck you Rob, you heard him calling you. 😆
"They" also say throw rocks, whatever at them, make yourself look large, just make a ton of commotion. That cat looked determined.
