This great video just increases my admiration and respect for these highly intelligent, elusive, classically very shy, and super gorgeous, highly athletic cats. Just like this mother cat, cougars are so stately and smart, she was cleverly distracting the coyotes to protect her little cubs. All big cats make great moms.
Very intriguing, this video. She knows what she is doing. She is dealing with three threats, the two coyotes and the human camera man, distracting you all from her cubs. You can see how she is constantly calculating. She is running this show. That is why she is so calm.
That was incredible. 2 coyotes!! If it were 1 might have been different, but cats are smart, they don't want a fight w/ an animal with teeth, if can avoid. If it's female, and not sure it is, she's guarding and diverting. It is big!! And Beautiful!! At one point a tour bus rolls by, just beyond the coyotes. Crazy. What a gift 🎁. As someone who worked in the Park for 20 years, 10 of those living on the Valley Floor, I also never saw anything like this although those coyotes LOVE the Ahwahnee Meadow, major hangout especially on full moon nights!
Amazing footage. Makes you realise just how truly wild Yosemite really is, and dangerous. Hope that you had more protection than just a camera. I suppose that the Park Ranger's wouldn't like it if people took rifles for protection into the park. They require visual evidence to close areas because of mountain lion sightings. He told me that in his 30 years of being in the part he had never come close to seeing anything like what I walked upon.

***** Actually they do, because unlike pack hunting species such as wolves cats are solitary hunters and cant afford to get injured. If a pack hunter gets injured it can rely on the pack for food and such until it heals and gets better or dies. Cat species usually weigh the benefit vs the potential for injury, now if the area is over populated then the species might have to resort to drastic measures.

Amazing video! What a very rare moment you caught. Mad respect for your courage to capture it on video while close to the action. The scariest part for you was probably when the mountain lion and coyotes were no longer exclusively focused on each other and started to notice you!
Holy s**t man. I live in the woods 6 days out of 7. I look for Coyotes and mountain lions nearly 100% of my life. This is one of the rarest videos I've ever seen. I don't know how I never seen this before, but it is one of the luckiest things any human has ever seen. Thank you for having a camera when you seen this. This is what wildlife documentaries would look like if they weren't "faked" or "only common things".
What’s happening is two fold. Cougar mom is distracting coyotes from her cubs near by; and the Coyotes are claiming their territory by making things uncomfortable. Coyotes keep a certain range. I’m sure the coyotes have been in that area for some time. It’s a pair of coyotes... there must be pups close by.
I'd be scared as shit being around there. I mean the Mountain Lion is probably annoyed that the Coyotes are making such a ruckus because being stealthy is one of their main hunting styles and the Coyotes aren't really aggressive towards humans but damn you're close as hell being there. That takes balls.
lol at the comments. The mountain lion was not afraid of these coyotes. Although yes, wild animals don't take unnecessary risk with getting hurt, I still don't see the cat being too concerned with encounters like this. As clearly stated in the the description of video, the mountain lion had cubs and she was just trying to distract the coyotes from going after them since they were in the area.
Deep in the Yosemite wilderness, we witness the top 2 predators of the arboreal forest challenging and guarding their territory - and then we hear a new invader at 5:50, the giant diesel belching city bus, just 20 yards down the trail...
Unbelieveable footage, particularly for just happening upon it. Would love to stumble into something like that one day; mountain lions are incredible. Thanks for sharing!
When that Mountain Lion yowled at 3:10, she was letting the forest know of her presence and I felt that was a battle cry and issuing a challenge to the Coyotes to keep them away from her cubs. It resonated deeply within me as a Marine and fellow warrior like her ready for battle. Semper Fi, USMC Vet. (2004-2013) 3/1 India Company 0311 Designated Marksman. Thundering Third, OORAH!!
She was calling the coyotes to follow her away from her cubs. Cougars are GENIUS animals. Look at Messi the pet cougar who outdoes all the dogs he competes with in those obstacle courses, follows every command effortlessly
It's amazing how no one reads the description. The puma was simply leading the coyotes away from her Cubs which were feeding on a deer with her when the coyotes appeared. Dude has huge balls though.
If I have huge balls, they must be compensation for a small brain. Filming that thing was just about the stupidest and most reckless thing I have done in my life. (I have 45 minutes of tape!). But it was an amazing experience. And I would do it again in an instant. Thank you for your comment.
I'm of the impression that these animals have an ongoing, mutually-annoying, relationship. Mountain lion annoys coyotes by being a cat. Coyotes annoy mountain lion by being dogs.
canyoncoffee.us I'm sure it was ..you've, receive a great honor . I lived in Yosemite close to a year in 1972..never saw a mountain lion. rarely coyotes.bears a few now and then. .time were different . animals are start taking back what was once theirs..
Cougar attacks on humans are extremely rare. I’ve never heard of a coyote attack on a human. ( I lived in lion and coyote country for 25 years in Montana.
Would love to know why 2,000 people thumbed down this video... In other news I know exactly where this is... I used to wait BL's (breakfast/lunch) at the Ahwahnee and would ride my bike from the top of the Terrace in Curry Village in the early hours of the morning hitting the parking lot at full speed then onto the bike path and a right at the dirt trail that led past the tennis court (the fence the cat is perching on) to hopefully make it to the church on time... Kudos to the videographer!
I don't think you were stupid. This is cool as hell. Cougars generally know to stay the hell away from humans. Besides, if she really wanted you, she could have you, and running away would only make it more likely that she'd chase you. Good job, ace!
@@USMC6976 In Florida they call them panthers, but are same as above. I realize there are different panthers in other countries, but the Florida panthers are cougars/pumas/mountain lions. They just happen to live in the Everglades.

**whew!** As much as I appreciate him getting such cool footage, I was genuinely worried something might creep up behind him, or the others might even attack eventually. Glad they're okay :)
I always found it interesting that, despite some wild animal attacks on humans, the majority of these predatory animals generally leave humans alone unless they're desperate. For example, those coyotes were willing to take on that mountain lion that more than likely would've torn them up, but they didn't perceive the human as a threat at all. Didn't even approach the guy recording.
What a magnificent creature the cougar is! Wish we had some form of big cat native to Australia so we too could enjoy such fantastic scenes as these. Thanks for sharing Richard...
Roger that, Richard Nyberg... especially right about here? --> 07:42 ... no doubt. ;-) That was a friggin' awesome video Richard, and thanks for sharing it and your experience with those critters.
Smart!! Mother Lion ,. Quick on her toes to get those coyotes away from her cubs... Coyotes don't have mercy for any animal's... Mother Lion you did and outstanding job.... Your babies are safe...😀😃👍🐆
Thanks for sharing. I would have been more worried about the yotes. A yote that is not afraid of a Mt. Lion, is sure in the heck not going to be afraid of a human. Add to the fact, there was more then one yote. The cougar had no interest in a fight, but the Yotes were worked up. Where were the cubs?
I think that there was no fear on the part of the mother mountain lion. I think that she was just trying to make herself the sole focus of the coyote and then later, the two coyotes as the first coyote's mate had joined it. She will go back for her cubs as soon as she makes sure that the coyotes won't return to try and find them. What a beautiful animal she is!!!
Vicki Olson People over estimate the power of a Mountain Lion and underestimate the power of coyotes. There is a reason why the Lion stayed up high and a reason the coyotes stayed and waited.
Mark Alan I agree. That mother Mountain Lion knows exactly what she is facing and in no way wants to risk injury or even death. I doubt that three coyotes could actually kill a full grown Mountain Lion, but, they could give her an injury bad enough that she would be unable to hunt successfully for awhile which would pur her cubs lives at stake, and herself vulnerable if she where to be attacked by another preditor.
It's amazing how much people lack the ability to read. There is so much confusion by this video yet if you read the description you would see what the Mt. Lion was doing....
Incredible video. You are very lucky to have taken it. That Cougar was just trying to divert the Coyote's attention, she could have made VERY short work of it had it approached her cubs.
The guy filming mentioned that he's surprised the Mountain Lion is afraid of the Coyote's... It's not that the Mountain Lion is afraid of the coyote's...It's that Mountain Lions like to be stealthy, and they can't stand it when Coyote's are around ,because when they see a Mountain Lion , They start barking loudly, and inform all of the forest that the Mountain Lion is there. The Mountain Lion hates that... Stealth is their main hunting tactic. It's their natural instinct. The Mountain Lion certainly is not afraid of that Coyote, only extremely annoyed.. Cats are very intelligent
well put. Plus different animal different approach on how they hunt. They both utilized their strengths. the coyotes by alerting and calling in for backup. power In numbers. hunting with a pack. or for whatever reasons...and the cat utilized its strength by getting up and out of the way, surveying the area, safety. I agree coyotes a problem. they are like the Bluejays on opening day in the woods. just rude lol
Same with leopards in Africa--When baboons spot a leopard they let the world know it--the leopard's cover is blown and he jaunts off to get reset away from the noisy baboons.
Depending on what time of year it was, those coyotes may have had a den with pups in it. Normally coyotes would avoid such a situation, but if there were pups around they become super aggressive and territorial and that’s why they stuck around that long. I’m sure they stayed put until the cat left
about 25 years ago I walked acros the meadow when a mountain lion passed me and turned into the driveway of the Awahnee Hotel and disappeared into the shrubs. Nobody believed me. This footage might be daughter or granddaughter of the one I saw.
Cougars get chased by hounds and take to the trees before being shot by hunters. Those felines though more powerful than hounds are easily afraid, and fight back only as a last resort, when cornered. Cougars are supposed to hunt harmless animals or fight for territory, but not other carnivores, be they coyotes or hounds.

@@colettejaques2559 Her cubs survival. If she wanted to she could turn around and destroy the coyote. The goal was to distract them.
I was shocked to see the Mountain Lion run and hide from 2 Coyotes but your description really makes a lot of sense.
Amazing video! What a very rare moment you caught. Mad respect for your courage to capture it on video while close to the action. The scariest part for you was probably when the mountain lion and coyotes were no longer exclusively focused on each other and started to notice you!
Shame you can't do the same to humans they are enjoying it love to seed same happening to them
Holy s**t man.
This is an incredible video! You got more action in a few minutes than I did during a whole day on Safari!
I thought coyotes spent their time chasing road runners.
That's not what yogi bear said
Road Runners win every time. LOL
and eating pets little kittens and puppies.
coyote is recouping after yosmite sam shot him in the azz....
Yeah I was thinking that too but I guess that's just a cartoon
What’s happening is two fold. Cougar mom is distracting coyotes from her cubs near by; and the Coyotes are claiming their territory by making things uncomfortable. Coyotes keep a certain range. I’m sure the coyotes have been in that area for some time. It’s a pair of coyotes... there must be pups close by.
Finally, an intelligent comment.
One brave man to keep filming! Thank you.
no one giant stupid man...if that cat would have found him a threat he would be dead at that range....
“ I think I’ll get out of here...” No I’ll stay a bit longer. 😱
Best camera guy on UA-cam hahaha great clips just great
I love the way coyotes sound when they howl
I'm of the impression that these animals have an ongoing, mutually-annoying, relationship. Mountain lion annoys coyotes by being a cat. Coyotes annoy mountain lion by being dogs.
Coyotes earn there reputation for being fearless they got my vote and wolves
They killed marshmallow ( my young kitten)

Mother nature, or witch nature, with so much brutality? Mothers are supposed to be protective, not baby killers.
This is very rare video between a Puma and a Coyote encounter. I have only seen two videos so far.
Who won, the coyotes OT the cougar? It's hard to believe if you ask me.
Puma won....she was protecting her cubs from coyotes
Amazing video Richard! Thanks for posting, North Fork has a big rogue cat hanging around now and people are scared. You showed such calm!
i was going to go on a 3 mile hike in the woods ( trails ) but i change my mind after watching this.
Cougar attacks on humans are extremely rare. I’ve never heard of a coyote attack on a human. ( I lived in lion and coyote country for 25 years in Montana.
@@jimtruscott5670 happened all the time in new england. Coyote attacks are regular. We only have a few pumas, but we have bobcat attacks.
Mr Smith I don’t think any of what you say is accurate.I lived in Connecticut for 21 years and hunted often in Vermont and New Hampshire.
He's big, but not as powerful if a true lion
Lol. Right
actually, i have 45 minutes of film. couldnt pull myself away.

Great video. Amazing you caught this all on video. Great job!
I don't think you were stupid. This is cool as hell. Cougars generally know to stay the hell away from humans. Besides, if she really wanted you, she could have you, and running away would only make it more likely that she'd chase you. Good job, ace!
That big thing isn’t afraid of the Coyotes just cautious.
Should have titled this - "Mountain Lion looking at a Coyote"
He might not be afraid one on one but smart enough to weigh it out at 1 on 2.
I think mountain Lion is that we call PUMA in latin America, beautifull cat anyway.
QUICHE45 also called cougar
Not only in latin America. In Germany also.
they are called mouontain lion, puma, and cougar depending on where you are.
@@USMC6976 In Florida they call them panthers, but are same as above. I realize there are different panthers in other countries, but the Florida panthers are cougars/pumas/mountain lions. They just happen to live in the Everglades.
The scientific name for this new-world cat is Puma concolor
(auto-correct corrected) and its range extends from the Yukon in Canada to the southern Andes. It has numerous common names throughout its range so to see if the cat you have in mind is the same species, check the scientific name that corresponds to the common name used in your area.
Wow Richard, great footage. I’m impressed. Thanks for sharing. 🦋
Thanks for the awesome video :)
**whew!** As much as I appreciate him getting such cool footage, I was genuinely worried something might creep up behind him, or the others might even attack eventually.
Glad they're okay :)
This is some amazing footage! Beautiful cat too. Cougars are my favorite :)
Oh and yes great footage, great video, you're a brave man. Ty for sharing!!!
6:39 the coyote just craps his pants.
Very cool footage...mountain lions are so intriguing! It must be awesome to have experienced this interaction.
Crazy, Ahwahnee Meadow is surrounded by humans, residences, the Ahwahnee Hotel, cars and traffic, etc.
whomever filmed this has some brass balls.
Best part was the zoom in on coyote taking a shit 🤣
Great video! Opportunity knocked and you answered, good job. Thanks!
What a magnificent creature the cougar is! Wish we had some form of big cat native to Australia so we too could enjoy such fantastic scenes as these. Thanks for sharing Richard...
You had. You exterminated.
My favorite animals so glad they’re native here and thanks for getting the name right and not disgracing them by calling them mountain lions lmaoo
@Jauckor did u see him doing that ?

Roger that, Richard Nyberg... especially right about here? --> 07:42 ... no doubt. ;-)
That was a friggin' awesome video Richard, and thanks for sharing it and your experience with those critters.
Smart!! Mother Lion ,. Quick on her toes to get those coyotes away from her cubs... Coyotes don't have mercy for any animal's... Mother Lion you did and outstanding job.... Your babies are safe...😀😃👍🐆
That's one beautiful mountain lion.
Dude, awesome video.
That cat is staying up there because it wants total advantage, smart cat.!
+Mark Alan EXACTLY, dude! People just don't know anything about animals.
+HowlingMoonCinemas Indeed. They see ridiculous videos on line and read exaggerated stories and then become experts.
Vicki Olson Very true.
The camera man is a fucking legend
Great work filming this!
You definitely have balls sir
Whoa... that's why you always pay attention to your surroundings!
The animals were gonna have a POW wow, but they weren’t expecting a special guest appearance
Looks like mother puma succeeded in protecting her cubs.
Lol the Camera man's "Shit!" was funny over and over. That mountain lion is scary though and he is lucky being that close.
Around the 5 minute mark when you pan back and the cat is looking straight at you. Chills.
It's amazing how much people lack the ability to read. There is so much confusion by this video yet if you read the description you would see what the Mt. Lion was doing....
Nobody reads the description
Lack of attention span and reading comprehension.
Facts
@@castlecallahan1769 I did!!
Hey .....how come cats arent ranked around the same intelligence as humans...

Nope. That's a negative

The cat had kittens.
The tour bus zipping by at 5:40 is priceless.

Mountain Lions have been seen in Vallejo, CA! This is no surprise to me!
@@gdblackthorn4137 Man, I used to live in Vallejo, and frequently still visit, so that's a scary notion!
That cat would kill both those coyotes. She was distracting them from her cubs. Read the description.
