Let’s applaud Edna Ferber, too - she wrote the novel the movie is based on. And a great supporting cast. Mercedes McCambridge, Carroll Baker, Jane Withers, Chill Wills, Elsa Cardenas, Judith Evelyn, Paul Fix, Rod Taylor, Alexander Scourby, Fran Bennett, Carolyn Craig, Noreen Nash, Barbara Barrie, Monte Hale, Earl Holliman, Sal Mineo, Dennis Hopper.

I've watched Giant at least a dozen times over the years, including just a few months ago. It remains the perfect movie on every single level. Not a false note in the whole film. And I completely believed the very young leads (Hudson, Taylor, & Dean) as middle-aged seniors, which is a testament to their talent as actors, especially Hudson and Taylor. As the older Bick and Leslie, they just exuded wisdom and maturity. Fascinating to me how they managed to do that.

My god , they gave Heath Ledger a posthumous Oscar award for Joker. I believe they should have awarded the same to James Dean. The movie is stellar in its own right. But i think most people will agree its James Dean who draw people to the movie.....even today.....

When the Warner Brothers logo comes on at the beginning of GIANT with the Dimitri Tiomkin score, it's just MAGNIFICENT. I can't imagine how powerful that moment is watching a restored version of it in a theater.

Even though "Giant" was made in 1955, 68 years ago, it still appears current, for a
number of reasons! 1. It was shot in color 2. the film was a 'period piece", taking
place, mostly in the 1920's & 30's, so it never 'dates' itself, 3. the cast of young, aspiring
'superstars', i.e. Taylor, Hudson, Dean & Hopper, made this epic, timeless for future viewers!

All time to date, my favorite movie. I missed an opportunity to have Elizabeth Taylor autograph my poster at Macy's while she was promoting her perfume, I'm still kicking myself!

I wish we had directors like George Stevens now. Not flashy, but very solid directors who do well with any genre of films. I think the last director like that was Sydney Pollack.

Mr. Steven’s is incorrect about the time (3 weeks) that he stated in his recollections of riding in the 550. Dean picked the car up on the 23rd of September and had it for only 7 days until his death. He traded in his Porsche 356 for the 550, which his friend Lew Bracker ended up purchasing from Competition Motors shortly thereafter. And according to the James Dean website, Dean finished filming on September 22.

"Giant" was filmed in Marfa, Texas. On February 13, 2016, U.S. Supreme Court Associate Justice Scalia died at the Cibolo Creek Ranch, also located in Marfa Texas. In 2018, artist John Cerney painted a massive mural on the side of Texas Highway 90 in Marfa (not that far from the Ryan Ranch, the working cattle ranch location where "Giant" was filmed) featuring stars James Dean and Elizabeth Taylor. Why George Stevens decided on filming his big movie in Marfa is anyone's guess.

I saw it as a kid and have watched it at least 12 more times. I was amazed in the 90s when some critics trashed it - why I will never know. It's always been my favorite Liz Taylor and Hudson film. It's also in my top 5 best films. So many moments I thought could not have been better. Yes it was a film about a marriage but also an epic film about some of the best moments in modern history but also some of the worst. Scenes of Taylor talking to Dean at his rundown place were authentic. Hudson trying to be a dad and toughen up his 5 year old eldest son, Taylors gracious handling of the Jane Withers character at the BBQ, her moments with her older children and coping with Luz the elder and Luz the younger, Sal Mineo, the old Hispanic parents bringing the body of their son back to Riatta for the last time after WW II. 1956 was a great year for films - my other favorite was Picnic with Wm. Holden and Kim Novak.

I think I heard a mistake by George Stevens Jr.. When he said that they announced at the 1951 academy awards that William Wyler was nominated for the academy award for best director for The desperate Hours I believe that was a mistake. The Desperate Hours was not made until 1955 or 56. please correct me if I'm wrong.

    • @nikolatesla5553
      @nikolatesla5553 2 роки тому +2

It was William Wyler, but the film was the Detective Story, not the Desperate Hours. He got all the directors right. He corrected the film that John Huston was nominated for. But didn't catch his mistake on William Wyler

you must understand that films (movies ) are an art form. If something was deteriorating The Mona Lisa wouldn't you do everything you could to preserve this work of art and the same thing is true of great movies. Also because film had its beginnings, major technical advancements, milestones and landmarks in the United States it is even more important that We do it.

Love Ben Mankiewicz but when he interrupts Steven Spielberg in the middle of answering his FIRST question to make a joke, it’s really a bad look. Beyond that, great panel and nice to see GIANT coming back into the zeitgeist a little bit.

Spielberg is one of the best filmmakers of all time, but the extreme wealth he possesses ($3.7+ billion) sickens me. It should be expropriated for the benefit of the masses. AOC's demand to "Eat The Rich" should be implemented.

    I’m 67. I don’t think I saw “Giant” until I was in my thirties.
It’s a great movie with great acting by everyone involved, but for me Elizabeth Taylor really stands out.
As for this interview, I’m disappointed that no one asked about the casting of Rock Hudson in the lead male role.

Preview of coming attractions for Dame Elizabeth, who went from MGM child star acting with animals to Oscar winner for playing hooker & drunken harridan, here she is feminist & anti-racist. Apparently she once told Tennessee Williams she should be his agent, she brought so many of his works to the screen. Half a century ago she & husband Burton were 2/3rds of the global box office, with Poitier probably making up the other 1/3rd.
