you are such a professional interviewer. You would never see this type of interview on Jimmy Fallon. He is more of a game show host. Stephen Colbert is a classy, smart, polite man. Keep up the good work.
Fallon's interview style is always like a skit on SNL. Even his facial reactions and hand gestures are overacting. Kimmel on the other hand is like a sleepy uncle with often shallow questions which feels like a waste of time especially when the celebrity guests are smart (like Cate Blanchett). What's lovable about Colbert is his obvious genuine fascination for all his guests. He acts like a fan...not a star. And audiences nowadays can sense authenticity.
Love him for his wit and smartness.

Yes and Steven jokes too, but it's slim and surrounded by seriousness so it's a perfect balance

Meh. I think he went fishing for that political angle. And while we need him to keep barking up that tree, , sometimes we need a break to listen to a rare interview. We could have learned any number of things from this guys storied life, but we had to waste a little time on the campaign.

I love most talk shows but I can tell that Stephen Colbert has a love for movies, it shows and makes his interviews more interesting.

Stephen Colbert is not only one of the funniest and best comedians on TV but also one of the best interviewers that I have ever seen in my 70+ years.
One of the greatest. My wife and I were invited to a special pre-screening of Schindlers Liste. After the film, we just went home, while most others (I presume) just headed for the champagne and snacks. We weren't able to do that. That film went so deep. Cheers from Germany!
After the film I ran to the bathroom in the movie theatre and cried for 20 minutes. I would still be there but my guy friend finally came into the ladies room and yanked me out.
Now consider the ugly anti Semitic activities that have sprung up since T___p’s administration and fired up thx to people like Kanye West - just a few days ago numerous groups celebrated Hate Day - and we’re back to 1939.
Steven Spielberg is amazing.
I have tremendous respect for him and his team, because I wrote a fan letter to him, and to my surprise his team wrote me back a personal letter and sent it in a first class FEDEX express envelope. I framed it and even sent a thank you note back.
Stephen never fails to amaze me when he talks in a way that informs while also sensitizes. Listening to you is good for the mind as well as the heart.
Aw, when Spielberg talks about bursting into tears at the sight of his "mother" and "father," that really touched me, poor guy. 😞

What a lovely intelligent conversation. I could listen to these two for hours.
Watching this, I realize that I'm seeing two geniuses in conversation. Each a master in their craft. I've seen many interviews with Spielberg and Colbert delivered the most engaging, thoughtful and penetrating I've ever seen. I've always been a fan of Colbert, but this just blew my mind.
I truly like Colbert; he is a master at conversation, and I tend to leave with the feeling I now know something about the person Colbert interviewed! He has a gift for that.

After ET's good-bye to Elliot, I never thought Mr. Spielberg would bring me to tears, but here he is doing it again! All I had to do was imagine his mom and dad before him prior to filming this story. Brilliance! Coming from an emotional heart!
Very brave of him to include his mother's affair in the movie. Not an easy thing to do.

@@tg072185 yes there is a lot of trauma involved. its dirty laundry, its a family secret but if you make an autobiographical movie you cannot just whitewash trauma out of it. its a integral part on how humans get shaped. it takes some courage to talk about it let alone show it in a movie. im sure you also had trauma in your life that shaped you. maybe you are aware of it may be you are not but most people would keep these types of things secret.

Spielberg and Anne are right. Most of my life i have met good people. Its the bad apples that ruin it for everyone else.
The Fableman’s really struck a chord with me. My parents have been divorced since I was three, not for the same reasons as Stevens parents, but you really see through the lens of the character that imitates Stephens childhood. If you or anybody you know has grown up in that life, take them to see the Fableman’s because it is a very aspiring film

I love the big interviews you do. I don't remember what the last one was, but this is a good jam for you. You are informed, empathetic, a great interviewer, and you know a lot of interesting people.
Steven Spielberg should direct a western movie. Although he produced True Grit, which was directed by the Coen Brothers, it would be great to see him take on the challenge of directing a western himself. This would complete his repertoire of directing movies in all major genres.
The Fabelmans was my favourite film of 2022. It just blew me away. I almost can't even talk about it. It captured something so deep and personal that I want to keep it to myself.

Yes, Spielberg is brilliant at the craft of filmmaking, but it is his goodness and his empathy that make him memorable.
Mentor and mensch to many in Hollywood, he was the first person who cared about Drew Barrymore and helped Quentin Tarantino keep things in perspective when Pulp Fiction was up against Forrest Gump for Best Picture. Great artist and even better human being.

Didn't used to like Colbert but really warming up to him, I especially like this interview style of him. Respect shows through to his guest.

Great interview. Regarding Fabelmans, my heart almost stopped during that scene when he discovered his mom having an affair with his dad's best friend through the film. That was brilliant. I had to rewind and watch that a few times to sink it all in. Very emotional. Spielberg is a master of film making.

Great video: I was in a beautiful marriage before my now ex wife left me, i still love her and most times I cant stop thinking about her, i am doing my very best to get rid of the thought of her, but i just cant, i love her so much, i don't know why i am bring this here for, i cant stop thinking about her.
its always difficult to let go of someone you love, i was in a similar situation my wife for 12 years left me, i couldnt just let her go i did all i could to get her back, i had to seek the help of a spiritual adviser who helped me bring her back

For most interviews the interviewee is just a sidekick to the bombastic persona of the interviewer. Colbert has questions that are coherent, moving and that allow Spielberg to come forth so we may see him authentically. I am grateful to both.

I woke up this morning around 5:13 AM. I had a dream I was in Iraq again; this time with my cameras. The first music I listened to was Wu-Tang Clan; a group I rarely listen to. This is the first UA-cam video of my day. I am struck with emotion at 4:15. Seeing the truth from photos, film... Stored reality and truth. I've seen so many lies and secrets through my lenses. I've also seen incredible beauty and courage. Only God and the dead have time to appreciate each and every frame of life. For us, the living, our run time is always too short. Our lives are bare summaries of this glorious experience. Thank the crew, the few trustees: Mr. Spielberg and Mr. Colbert. This is a life made beautiful from the courage of those who lived before me.

Saw the Fabelman's today & it's probably my favorite Steven Spielberg movie. Especially loved the classical piano in it. It reminded me of some of the moments in Five Easy Pieces.
I very much appreciate Stephen's thoughtfulness in this piece. He is a comedian but more than. He knows when subjects don't deserve laughs. Some topics deserve the deep discussion. Steven is also fantastic in this piece because he is clearly speaking his full truth. Possibly the best interview I have seen from Colbert

FABELMANS is the first film by Spielberg I've wanted to see in a long, LONG time. I trust, unlike so many of his serious films, this one won't end with everyone hugging and crying.
I've known for a long time now that most of us have family trauma, but as a fan it never occurred to me that Spielberg did too.
Hoping he can make The Bee Gees biopic soon
It's a great movie and it really reminds me of Italian cinema. They make movies about normal families and have made several like this written about the lives of the director themselves. Sometimes they deviate a little from reality rather than tell a straight narrative as when we look back on life it is disjointed like a dream.
Paolo Sorrentino made a film about his younger life as he lost both his parents at 167 in a terrible accident and it devastated his youth but contributed to him becoming the great director he is today. Fellini made movies about his own youth with surreal elements.
It's nice to see an American great trying to tell a more personal story.
Sadly it has failed at the box office so I guess it will b more comic book heroes punching other comic book heroes in the face for the next ten years.
ive notice the same with writing, im terrible at proofing my own work, but stick it into a different app, a different bit of software so it appears new to my eye - and i can proof it no issue like i do other peoples work.

It was the right time for The Fabelman's. Steven needed to do this at this point in time while he was still young enough to say it and express his views of divorce and living through it.
There really should be an uncut version released.

I found it interesting that in the first minutes of A.I the narrator explains sea level rise impacting the great coastal cities.The movie was released in 2001.Speilberg is in the loop on many levels.

I've just watched Fabelmans yesterday, and it's a wonderful movie and family history. The discovery of Sam's mother's affair through an 8mm movie it's astonishing.

Its strange he says that it wasn't publicly expressed. I learned about it from an interview he did a while back (he's one of my heroes, I watch everything Speilberg related). Maybe he forgot? Remember he said he use to blame his dad until he learned the truth.
I don't believe he meant it had never been mentioned, he meant that it wasn't widely talked about and the details of it weren't publically known.
They'll tell you what happpened to them but never why.
to convert his childhood trauma of parents separating into the list of movies he made might just make him the poster child for greatest divorce kids ever!
The movie overall was just OK, but that scene had me on the edge of my seat. It's the best scene I saw all year.
It's taken 70+ years and people have forgotten what the world went through in WWII ....my parents lived through the war and taught us to never forget ....

He got to meet 2 of my life long heroes, John Williams who taught me the power of music in movies and Steven Spielberg who taught me the power of the Story telling with the camera. AND Steven Colbert who taught me to let it ALL hang out for the bit.
