This was very interesting, enjoyed it. My father is Hispanic and was born in a small Texas Hill Country town in 1933. My mother is Anglo and my parents were married in the early 50’s and I can tell you there was a lot of racial tension between a mixed marriage in that part of Texas in that era. My grandfather, my dad’s dad, was a musician and when he would play in different venues in the surrounding hill country area during the break he had to leave from inside the premises and stay outside until they were through with the break and ready to play again because he was Hispanic. My father was never, ever allowed in my grandmother’s house because my mother’s step-father would not allow him to step foot in his house because my father is Hispanic. Later, my father worked for a famous entertainer and it was such a huge contrast to see my father go from performing, signing autographs, taking pictures with fans, and then go back home to Texas where he wasn’t even allowed in my grandmother’s house because of nothing more than the color of his skin. I remember watching Giant as a kid when we were living in Nashville, Tennessee and I never did connect with the prejudices because we lived in so many places and really didn’t have to deal with the prejudices until we went back home to Texas. I also couldn’t believe at the time that there were places in Texas that looked like that since I was used to the lush Texas Hill Country and I used to wonder why anyone would want to live in such a flat ugly area with no trees and river. I now live next to Marfa in the Davis Mountains and have lived here for years and love the area. There is no museum of Giant just a tiny room off the Paisano Hotel lobby, and is actually where I picked up your book. When you eat at the Paisano restaurant you are surrounded by huge black and white framed photos of the cast during the making of Giant. In my opinion the Marfa lights are great and I used to watch them all the time. Now watching the movie the background and the outdoor surroundings with Cathedral Mountain and all the other mountains look so familiar. It’s a great movie! Years ago I used to work with some of the caballeros and horse trainers who were born on the King Ranch and used to love hearing their old stories so I could really relate to the book Giant and some of the way of life. My parents are now 86, and 82, and now live in the town where my dad was born, and he still plays music!

I was told it depended on the area you were in. He said in his town the population was half Hispanic and everyone ate together at restaurants, went to mass together, school functions together, etc.

The 1st half of the movie was good. The scene with Jimmy covered in oil and confronting Rock Hudson was the climax. The rest of the movie was utter nonsense... just 2 old rich drunken men fighting ... garbage ending.

Rock and Jimmy didn’t like each other because they had different acting styles. Jimmy coming from the method while Rock coming from “the Hollywood school of movie star”. Not to mention they were in competition with each other. It had nothing to do with being gay, Jimmy himself was bisexual.

No he wasn't. That's just gossip and rumour.
"I am not a homosexual"... James Dean

@@frankpotter1982 well I don’t think you know what you’re talking about. I would believe Elizabeth Taylor who had a deep friendship with James Dean and would stay up with him until dawn talking while filming this movie. To her he revealed a lot about his life and SHE said years later in interviews that he was bisexual. I don’t see what Elizabeth would have to gain by lying about that, or why she would say this as a certainty if it was “gossip”.

    • @NightOwlUtopia

@@frankpotter1982 it’s also worth pointing out that. THIS WAS THE 1950s and people where four times more ignorant on this subject than they are even today in this country. Just like Rock Hudson ALSO denied many times that he was gay, I assume Jimmy also did. Being bisexual is not the same as being a homosexual no matter what stupid straight men want to believe on that subject (if you sleep with men you’re gay, period.)

@@frankpotter1982 oh and Frank… you should have finished what he said too. The full quote was “ I am not a homosexual, but I am not going through life with one hand tied behind my back.” It seems like YOU are slightly offended by homosexuality, since you knew damn well that wasn’t the full quote. I’m not the one.

I don't like the way they were talking about James Dean. He was a genius actor and "Hollywood" couldn't understand him. He just had his own style. The role of Jett Rink wouldn't have been the same without James Dean.

You are absolutely correct ... Without James Dean this movie would've been flat and long forgotten -- Dean was the REAL star and when Giant was released in Oct. 1956 it was his grief-stricken fans who comprised most of the movie-goers.

I live in Midland and the Fort Davis/Alpine/Marfa triangle is our favorite quick getaway (2.5 hour drive). We have stayed at the Hotel Paisano in Marfa a few times. Good food and the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in. But I learned from this video that none of the cast stayed there during filming. The hotel does indeed capitalize on ‘Giant’ however and is packed with memorabilia from the movie.

Giant is probably my all-time favorite movie. Interesting to hear who George Stevens wanted for the three leads. Impossible, impossible, to imagine anyone other than Liz Taylor as Leslie, Rock Hudson as Bick, and James Dean as Jett. Especially Liz Taylor - she was perfection and should have won an Oscar for this role.
I was so fortunate to find Giant playing at a luxurious theater with a huge screen just a couple of months ago. Took my son and significant other. What a gift from above.

Audrey Hepburn was great but not for a western which Giant was. She was ridiculous in The Unforgiven playing an Indian girl raised as white and for some reason had a English accent.

I agree with Mr Graham about Giant not getting enough credit as a movie about marriage and family. Despite the pressures of change that each character deals with in different ways the marriage endures, and the family moves forward and poor Jett Rink at the start of the story thrives by the end though not without difficulty. It is a beautiful movie about real people where the difficulties are exposed, recognized and in important ways overcome.
