  • The Batanes and Babuyan Islands, located in the Luzon Strait at the northern tip of the Philippines, are a strategic fulcrum in South China Sea geopolitics, positioned about 80 kilometers from Taiwan across the Bashi Channel. Known for their natural beauty, these islands hold significant military importance due to their proximity to Taiwan and key maritime routes. As tensions rise, the Philippines has bolstered its military presence in Batanes, enhancing naval infrastructure and deploying additional troops to Mavulis, the northernmost island, to counter potential Chinese naval movements. This strategic initiative, supported by US military cooperation, underscores Batanes' critical role in regional security, potentially serving as a choke point against Chinese forces and a vantage point for monitoring the Taiwan Strait, thus highlighting the islands' pivotal position in the broader Indo-Pacific defense strategy. The Luzon strait's importance is actually understated in all these analysis videos about it. Everyone says it is "strategically important" but nobody really knows why except for the proximity with Taiwan. But that's not the full story. Thing is, the LUZON STRAIT is split into 3 important channels running parallel to each other. The Bashi channel is the most popular one which lies between Y'ami/Mavulis island and Taiwan, but there's also the Balintang channel and the Babuyan channel. What this means is that 2 out of the 3 entrances to the SCS is Philippine territory, which makes it impossible for China to create a blockade just by blocking the Bashi channel. Basically the US can bypass said blockade by going through the other Channels and surround any fleet that China stations in the Bashi channel. It would also be an act of war against the Philippines if China decided to blockade the 2 other channels since those aren't international waters. Those are Philippine territorial waters. In short, the Luzon strait acts as a wind chime and a backdoor against any Chinese invasion against Taiwan.

    During the Duterte Administration, the Philippines aligned with China, which led US to realize that it had lost an important ally in the East Asia.
    US may not have had the confidence to confront China in the Indo-Pacific region if the Philippines were to align with China.
    The Philippines, being one of the most strategic locations in the region, can significantly impact regional dynamics.
    One thing I can say about this is be careful not to mess with the Philippines, or you might regret it sooner.

    Whoever owns Batanes island will guard the Bashi channel from foreign ships passing by. He who owns the island will dominate the whole of most northern part of Luzon.
    Batanes stands to watch the South China Sea, the Philippine Sea, Bashi Channel, southern Taiwan and the entirety of southern Japan the reason why it should be well-fortified and well-defended.

      As a resident of batanes, its still unbelievable for our tiny islands to be a focal point for an upcoming war. We went from a relatively unknown island to a popular tourist spot destination then now a major strategic location for war, its hard to take this all in a decade, specially when were probably the first to die if our country invovles itself in the upcoming war of china and taiwan.

      @@drift_1387 The Batanes islands, when you think about it, is a crucial component of Philippine security just like the Sulu archipelago and Palawan/Balabac. These are all crucial chokepoints that can deny access to entire oceans; for Batanes, it’s the Pacific while for Palawan/Balabac, it’s Sulu and Celebes sea. We Filipinos were complacent and took it all for granted for a long time.

      The Philippines is the undisputed owner of Batanes, it was made part of the country by Spanish Governor General Basco in 1783 and the island groups were part of the land ceded by Spain to the US under the treaty of Paris in 1898. The American colonial government in the Philippines made it a sub-province of Cagayan in 1907 and it was part of the land ceded by the US to the Philippines upon the declaration of independence granted by the US on July 4, 1946.

    Build a sprawling submarine naval base there in Batanes. The PH will then be able to control the highly strategic Bashi Channel, which is needed by China's Navy if they were to invade Taiwan successfully. Furthermore, if the PH positions its Brahmos cruise missiles and anti-aircraft missile systems and radars there, it will be a nightmare for China.

    In reality,the reactions made by the US and allies is way too late. the chinese navy already positioned their assets in SCS and also at the south end of Taiwan. they have observation points all over the place and the mavulis island is not strategic anymore. the development of infrastructure there is a welcoming gesture by the US and may serve as a frontline or a warning station for chinese military movements but it might be targeted easily by chinese ships. the only viable option for US and Phil troops will be to dig deep bunkers( like they did in corregidor and carabao island in ternate cavite) where it serves a secret base for sophisticated weapons.

    • @rhyanjill
      @rhyanjill Місяць тому

      Nope, not really. What’s important is to maintain observation facilities against China to give an early warning if they make a move. What China is also afraid of more than anything are the blockades since this will be a war that’s centered on logistics and oil trade. Hence all the emphasis on CHOKEPOINTS, STRAITS, and CHANNELS. The Philippines provides all the backdoors, shortcuts and alternative routes between the SCS and the surrounding seas and oceans, which throws a wrench against any Chinese plan of controlling the region. A case in point is the Luzon strait which comprises of the Bashi Channel, Babuyan Channel and the Balintang Channel. Three channels that run parallel to each other and where 2 of which are Philippine territorial seas. Even if China blockades the Bashi channel, they can easily be bypassed, pincered and surrounded using the two other channels that the Philippines controls. The same thing works with the Palawan islands which guards the Mindoro Strait and the Balabac strait. And one of the bases that the Philippines gave America access to is in the Balabac islands. The land assets also makes it harder for China to know where any counterattack comes from especially when HIMARS / high mobility artillery systems get involved.

    There is no such thing as “south China sea” but west Philippine sea. The history books should be re-written. Remove China sea and put on the map South east asia commercial sea lane. China should abandon the illegally annexed spratlys artificial islands coz it would eventually lead to war. In the end the artificial islands will eventually become sand bars again after pulverizing those buildings.

    that is only strategic for the US as it wants free movement of its assets from japan and south korea to the south china sea. without the US military bases in the region, security would be stable. the island disputes are only escalated to justify US presence. all foreign military bases need to be closed and the UN security council re organized with all continents properly represented for more effective world security assistance. and the UN headquarters relocated from the US.

      Wrong and historically inaccurate. We’re not just gonna ignore the fact that the Chinese incursions in the region has been going on for a long time now before Obama even got involved to mediate between the Philippines and China. In fact the US under Obama even made the naive and boneheaded move to urge the Philippines and China to deescalate by backing off from the Scarborough shoal, which the Philippines honored but China didn’t. Instead China built an artificial island complete with military bases, which is what truly escalated the situation.
