Hi Gary, really beautiful bowl, I love the shape and the satin finish, and the grain and the bark are gorgeous! Interesting how those spiderwebs came into the wood… may well have been a bolt of lightning 🤔 Nature… you cannot beat it… never stops to surprise me! Great turning job, Gary, well done 👍🏻 Take care!
Many thanks I appreciate your comments. I meant to say maybe that is why the tree was cut down....hit by lightning. A fun thought but something did it for sure. Yes it is impossible to beat what we have been provided with. I only hope to be able to use it the best I can. Thanks for watching, Gary
I’m with you and Phil, leave the electricity to someone else. I’ve watcher it being done and it’s interesting to watch, but it scares me too. I just imagine something happening and ⚡️ZAP!⚡️ This is a “warm” bowl. Very pretty. The “spiderwebs” give it personality. 😁 I like it! Take care and be safe! 🤗 🪶🌸🍀~ Roma 🦕 🦅
Thank you and I agree and will leave that to the pro's. I wonder now when a few blocks over a neighbor had a tree struck by lightning if there would have been any effect to the pieces that were not shattered. And besides nature makes the best spider webs. Take care, Gary
Thanks Mike and after you did your Pear bowl I remembered this piece so dug it out and put it in line to be turned. So thanks for the reminder. Take care, Gary
Hi Gary. Nice bowl! My son (the techno in our family) and I just finished experimenting with the process you were just describing. It turns out very amazing results! Of course it needs to be used sparingly and not on any already beautiful wood. I’ll send you a picture. Cheers, Rick
@@ThePapa1947 Yes our son is also extremely safety conscious, with thick rubber gloves and insulated handles for the contacts. His other hobby is blacksmithing/metal work so he is alway aware of the dangers in that workplace.
Guessing your pear wood was invaded by “spalt spiders” who leave thin little spalt lines as they web their way through the wood, eating baby spalts. LOL! 😜 Sorry, just my overactive imagination escaping again. Must be from breathing too much wood (forest fire) smoke. Very nice bowl, and good choice on the finish.
Thank you Valerie and now I am worried about those "splat spiders" At my age my skin is starting to look a bit spalted LOL. We have been luck here and have not got much smoke the the big fires. Not like it was a last year. Thanks for watching, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Air has been clear here for the most part. Just a small dose of it the other day. Had to drive through the Protection Island fire smoke on my way home from a turner’s work party. Fingers crossed we do not repeat last year’s “Great Smoke Out”.
Very nice! I like how symmetrical it ended up. The finish worked well...nice choice! Okay, I'm headed out to put a lightning rod on my apple tree! That design was unique and very attractive!
Thank you Max very happy you liked it. Either a lightning rod or the right fungus or bugs maybe. What ever did I I thought it was pretty cool. Thanks for watching, Gary
Thanks you and I have so many finishes that I like and just used the MW on the next one coming up. But the one I am working on today I am using shellac. Thanks for watching, Gary
Beautiful turning, Gary. The wipe-on satin poly really compliments the wood and brings out the warm color tones. Thank you fir sharing your talent and skills. Steve
Many thanks Steve. I do like the look the wipe on poly gives the wood. But I like a lot of finish's and all for different things. Thanks for watching, Gary
I don't like fractal burning too but the natural Lichtenberg's strikes are ok for me. Those marks looks a little like tunels after worms but are filled up. I seen few times how the wood is looking after lightning strikes and every was totally different. Beautiful work on very original piece of pear, Gary. You always have lucky for that pieces 👌 Take care. Rav
Thank you Rav, I was more or less kidding about it being lightning. A years ago our neighbors tree was hit by lightning. Sounded and looked like a rocket had just hit it. Blew it apart half way up. And it was a big tree. It could have just as easily hit the fir trees 50 feet from us or our very large cedar tree. They do look like worm tracks but there is not debris and they are very smooth. Some kind of splalting maybe. Take care, Gary
That's a lovely live edge bowl!! The method you mentioned using high voltage to burn designs in wood is very dangerous if done incorrectly. People have died doing it wrong. It's just not worth the additional risk to me. Personally I am not a fan, although many of the vessels I've seen are beautiful. Thanks for sharing this video!👍🏾
Thank you very much Clint! I just noticed you have a channel. I was searching for Hackberry I noticed you had a piece. I was given some recently and have it in my lathe right now. I was surprised how hard the wood is. But the piece you have looks way more featured which I liked. Thanks for watching, Gary
@@ThePapa1947 most of the Hackberry I've turned has been crotches. I look for them in the heavy trash piles on my way to and from work. I have about 10 turned and drying in bags and probably another 20 in logs. Threw a few in the dirt to see if they'll spalt good. It's like a weed tree here in Houston. Thanks for your years of entertaining us. Learned a lot from you.
Thank you again Gary. Another excellent piece. I wish I had the kind of time you do to work in the shop. But your videos inspire me to get there one day. See you next week!
Thank you Mark happy you liked it. Well being retired gives me lots of time in the shop. Before I retired I spent my working days in a well equipped wood shop. I was a wood pattern maker which was a wood workers dream job...if you ask me. Take care, Gary
Beautiful job, Gary! Just got my lathe in February and learning something new with every turning. Between you and Phil I feel like I'm learning a lot! Thanks for the guidance! Cheers, Pete
Thank you Stephine. I can imagine how it looks inside the tree while it is still growing and full of moister. The finish brings it all back for us to see. Thanks for watching, Gary
Really beautiful grain and color in that Pear, Gary! I love how you brought it all out with your design and live edge. The poly seems to be the perfect finish for this piece, as well! You are right, too, the "spider lines" look just like the Lichtenberg method has been applied. And, I'm with you, we'll leave that to the young kids though I do love the look it gives wood but I'll leave that to Mother Nature. Good job, fun video, keep'em coming, buddy! 😊 Phil
Thank you Phil, nature sure gave me something to work with. After turning another piece from the same piece over 2 1/2 years ago I was really surprised at what this one had inside. I wired my whole shop(with permit and inspection) built the electronics for my CNC mills but I am not about to mess with Lichtenberg. And like you said it is very cool. One of my viewers sent some pictures of what he and he son have done. So I think he is also leaving a lot of it to the younger guys. Take care buddy, Gary
Phil and Gary, do you'll think the grain in the bottom of the bowl is prettier when you turn a bowl with the bark at the rim versus bark side on the bottom of the bowl? To me the growth rings are more pronounced. Great videos both of you. I've learned so much from the two of you just keep up the good work.
I think you are right because when you turn from the outside toward the center you are going to leave more of the heart wood running from end to end. Thanks for watching and your comments. Take care, Gary

Thanks so much and I am sure had I not got the stack of pear I did over 2 years ago it would have been firewood.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
A lovely bowl Gary, natures artistry at its' finest. Take care, John
Thank you John and nature sure shined in this piece.
Take care,
Gary
A lovely bowl. Think Thanksgiving and homemade dinner rolls piled high in it.
Thank you Judith...now you are talking! My wife makes great homemade rolls...yum
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I think that bowl turned beautifully! I would love to have one just like that someday.
Thanks so much Julee I am very happy you liked it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That's really beautiful. I like it
Thank you Joann I am happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
I’m with you and Phil, leave the electricity to someone else. I’ve watcher it being done and it’s interesting to watch, but it scares me too. I just imagine something happening and ⚡️ZAP!⚡️
This is a “warm” bowl.
Take care,
Gary
Very beautiful, Gary! I turned my first pear bowl a few weeks ago and I really like it! It’s so pretty and rustic looking.
Thanks Mike and after you did your Pear bowl I remembered this piece so dug it out and put it in line to be turned.
So thanks for the reminder.
Take care,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 well you’ve inspired me many times, glad I could give you an idea. 🙂
Hi Gary. Nice bowl! My son (the techno in our family) and I just finished experimenting with the process you were just describing. It turns out very amazing results! Of course it needs to be used sparingly and not on any already beautiful wood. I’ll send you a picture.
Cheers, Rick
Thank you Rick and I am sure you know you need to be careful using it. But we do with everything.
I would love to see the pictures.
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Yes our son is also extremely safety conscious, with thick rubber gloves and insulated handles for the contacts. His other hobby is blacksmithing/metal work so he is alway aware of the dangers in that workplace.
Guessing your pear wood was invaded by “spalt spiders” who leave thin little spalt lines as they web their way through the wood, eating baby spalts. LOL! 😜 Sorry, just my overactive imagination escaping again. Must be from breathing too much wood (forest fire) smoke. Very nice bowl, and good choice on the finish.
Thank you Valerie and now I am worried about those "splat spiders"
At my age my skin is starting to look a bit spalted LOL.
We have been luck here and have not got much smoke the the big fires. Not like it was a last year.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 Air has been clear here for the most part. Just a small dose of it the other day. Had to drive through the Protection Island fire smoke on my way home from a turner’s work party. Fingers crossed we do not repeat last year’s “Great Smoke Out”.
Spalt spiders 😆
Definitely a pretty piece!
Thank you very much Kathleen, very happy you liked it.
Gary
Nice job, looks great
Thank you Vern, I appreciate you watching and commenting,

Turned out beautiful 👍
Thanks so much William and thanks for watching,
Gary
Nice finish. Thanks.
Thank you John and thanks for watching,
Gary
Beautiful piece!👏🏻👏🏻👍❤️
Thanks so much Wanda I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Take care,
Gary
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Perfect
Carsten
Thanks so much Carsten!
Gary
Dry nice live natural edge, might have to go back to that MW poly! Cheers
Thanks you and I have so many finishes that I like and just used the MW on the next one coming up. But the one I am working on today I am using shellac.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
nice work 👍👍
Thank you Douglas and thanks for watching.
Cheers,
Gary
Beautiful turning, Gary. The wipe-on satin poly really compliments the wood and brings out the warm color tones. Thank you fir sharing your talent and skills. Steve
Many thanks Steve. I do like the look the wipe on poly gives the wood. But I like a lot of finish's and all for different things.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
I don't like fractal burning too but the natural Lichtenberg's strikes are ok for me. Those marks looks a little like tunels after worms but are filled up. I seen few times how the wood is looking after lightning strikes and every was totally different. Beautiful work on very original piece of pear, Gary. You always have lucky for that pieces 👌
Take care.
Take care,
Gary
Nice content, good luck with your work 🔔
Thank you very much Tanju and thanks for watching.
Gary
That's a lovely live edge bowl!! The method you mentioned using high voltage to burn designs in wood is very dangerous if done incorrectly. People have died doing it wrong. It's just not worth the additional risk to me. Personally I am not a fan, although many of the vessels I've seen are beautiful. Thanks for sharing this video!👍🏾
Greg I agree about not using that method.

Beautiful Gary
Thank you very much Clint! I just noticed you have a channel. I was searching for Hackberry I noticed you had a piece. I was given some recently and have it in my lathe right now. I was surprised how hard the wood is. But the piece you have looks way more featured which I liked.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 most of the Hackberry I've turned has been crotches. I look for them in the heavy trash piles on my way to and from work. I have about 10 turned and drying in bags and probably another 20 in logs. Threw a few in the dirt to see if they'll spalt good. It's like a weed tree here in Houston.
Thanks for your years of entertaining us. Learned a lot from you.
Nice work.
Thank you very much Lamar!
Gary
Thank you again Gary. Another excellent piece. I wish I had the kind of time you do to work in the shop. But your videos inspire me to get there one day. See you next week!
Thank you Mark happy you liked it. Well being retired gives me lots of time in the shop. Before I retired I spent my working days in a well equipped wood shop. I was a wood pattern maker which was a wood workers dream job...if you ask me.
Take care,
Gary
Beautiful.
Thank you Josephine, happy you like it.
Gary
Looks GREAT!
Thank you Billy and thanks for watching.
Gary
Beautiful job, Gary! Just got my lathe in February and learning something new with every turning. Between you and Phil I feel like I'm learning a lot! Thanks for the guidance! Cheers, Pete
Well thank you Pete that is very kind of you to day.
I bet you are having a lot of fun on that lathe. I know I have for many years.
Take care,
Gary
Just such gorgeous colours! Isn't it amazing how a bit of oil or wax, just makes the colours "pop"?
Thank you Stephine. I can imagine how it looks inside the tree while it is still growing and full of moister. The finish brings it all back for us to see.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Really beautiful grain and color in that Pear, Gary! I love how you brought it all out with your design and live edge. The poly seems to be the perfect finish for this piece, as well! You are right, too, the "spider lines" look just like the Lichtenberg method has been applied. And, I'm with you, we'll leave that to the young kids though I do love the look it gives wood but I'll leave that to Mother Nature. Good job, fun video, keep'em coming, buddy! 😊
Phil
Thank you Phil, nature sure gave me something to work with. After turning another piece from the same piece over 2 1/2 years ago I was really surprised at what this one had inside.
I wired my whole shop(with permit and inspection) built the electronics for my CNC mills but I am not about to mess with Lichtenberg. And like you said it is very cool. One of my viewers sent some pictures of what he and he son have done. So I think he is also leaving a lot of it to the younger guys.
Take care buddy,
Gary
Phil and Gary, do you'll think the grain in the bottom of the bowl is prettier when you turn a bowl with the bark at the rim versus bark side on the bottom of the bowl? To me the growth rings are more pronounced. Great videos both of you. I've learned so much from the two of you just keep up the good work.
I think you are right because when you turn from the outside toward the center you are going to leave more of the heart wood running from end to end.
Thanks for watching and your comments.
Take care,
Gary
Just beautiful.
