    Thank You & Good Morning Gary...It is so nice to wake up on Friday morning with my HUGE mug of espresso, lotto combo (with lots of foam on top) & watching you turn your latest adventure. I stop often, rewind, catch little things I missed the first time around. The project is the object (of course) BUT your explanation & watching how you move around your work is what I key on. Every craftsman works with their own personal style that can only come from years of determined experience & practice....English Walnut turning looks great & watching YOU turn it even GREATER !!!.......TM

      Thank you tuffy, you are too kind but I appreciate your comments.
      I guess all the years of building patterns has me looking ahead at what my next move is and talking it over with myself before I do it.
      This English Walnut has really been nice.
      Thanks for watching and that coffee you had sure sounds good.

    That English Walnut always turns out great and to have a crotch piece is just a bonus. You did a great job with this one, Gary! All the right decisions including the Howard's. I love how that makes a piece feel so silky smooth. Fun video, buddy, keep'em coming!

      Thanks Phil, it was a fun video and that is what I am doing again for the next one. This moving work benches and jointers was more than I expected and took up a lot of time. Then our long time friends are leaving Oregon and I helped with them t get a few things done.
      So in this case fun equals easy LOL.
      Yes the Howard's sure does give the wood a very nice feel. I should use it more.

      Hey Gary, your kitty wants attention. Despite worm holes, it’s still a nice bowl. When I turn birch wood that I have, it’s full of worm holes. Instead of trying to turn them away, I just make the bug holes par of the design.

    Gary. I couldn’t tell if my cat was meowing or it was yours. I kept looking around for him. Haha. I have a piece of Malberry crotch that’s still drying from last year. Hope to get to it soon

      Thank you Mark, those silly cats come out and cry most of the time because they want to get up high into some of my cabinets. Or they just walk around crying. But they love it till the compressor comes on or I use anything louder than the lathe and they they want back in.

    Very nice heart-shaped bowl. I didn't know if you'd be able to get rid of that tear out. Howard's was the right call. I've been using straight walnut oil on a few recent projects that called for a satin finish. Takes a long time, but a nice natural finish for projects like these.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому

      Thank you Jay, I was surprised it sanded out pretty easily.
      I have some Walnut oil and should give it a try on some pieces.

    Hello Papa, since I read the book about the woodturning god Ellsworth, I know that not only the handling of the woodturning tool, but also the posture of the person who creates it is decisive for a good result. If you are blessed with the knowledge of the correct posture of the woodturning tool, this question remains open, also in all of your videos. After studying your videos and the book for several months, many a move occurs to me, or rather I notice it in you. I would like you to show a video in which you show your posture in certain turning positions. Thank you from Northern Germany.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому

      Thank you very much Schorschi! I have not read the book or know much about Ellsworth. My posture at the lathe was developed as a wood pattern maker. Here we had to make very accurate cuts to match dimensions on a drawing. So total tool control is very important. To me the most important thing is to be relaxed and precise. I will try and setup the camera to try and show that.
      What angle would you think is important to you?
      Thanks for watching,
      Gary

    Walnut seems to be a popular meal for those worms or bugs. I made a knob out of Walnut for a small lidded box and like you a worm hole emerged just before I finished the shape. Oh well...it ads character.
    Well done on this project as well as the description and video.

      Thank you Jane, both kitties love to come out and wonder around. They will follow me to the door and look up like the are asking if it is ok. If I turn a noisy machine on they get out of there real fast
      Yes after having a work bench in the same spot for 45 years I decided it just did not work very well. So that meant dust collector changes and move some wires to the machines. Liking it so far but still trying to straighten up a few things.
      When it is cleaned up I will try to show what I did.

But as I recall you get some very heavy rain there. In 1967 I spent Aug, Sept and Oct. at Ft. Polk and experienced the most powerful rain I had ever. I that was the reason for training there for where we were headed.

    A great video. Thank you very much. I have a question: what is your view about having a bowl or any turned object indoors when there is evidence of wood boring insects which may still be in the wood and might possibly relish the opportunity to get into your floorboards/joists or other wood components in your house? Elsewhere I have seen some folk talk about microwaving the wood for a given period to see off any remaining possible infestation. Many thanks.

    • @ThePapa1947
      @ThePapa1947  2 роки тому +1

      Thank you Trefor! So with this turned as thin as it was I am certain there was nothing alive in it. But I do know some people will put the blank in a microwave for a short time to get rid of any bugs that might be there. I think they do it before even putting it in the lathe. Or after it is roughed out. I have not done that though.

    Nice bowl Gary, what’s in the Howard’s product? See it used a lot. I love the lighter color of American walnut, not much of it around here that I am aware of. A much darker walnut seems more abundant. My smaller compact shop, seems I am always moving stuff around. Stay well and always learn from you.

    That is a beautiful bowl Gary , I love the finish and the bark edge I think walnut tends to check rather quick, at least the walnut I have seems too ,and there is not a piece that has kept its bark as it was cut down in the summer time and I don't think that helps ..does it? Hi Gary! Beautiful little English walnut bowl, and the Howard Feed’n’Wax gives it a lovely subtle shine, I like that a lot, lets the wood show its natural beauty… The worm holes add to the interest of the piece, and who knows, if used as a breakfast bowl they might even add a little bit of protein to your corn flakes 😉 In any case, if you serve breakfast in this bowl to your wife next February 14, it will surely put a smile on her face 😊👍🏻 Beautiful!
