- I turn a bowl in a bowl from London Plane. This is a fun project using a multi axis process to give it the look of a bowl sitting in another bowl.
The piece of London Plane was given to be by Ron from Creations By Ron
Finished with Zinsser Seal Coat and Zinsser Shellac

That is really cool Papa. I could have some real fun with that. "Hey, hand me that little bowl inside of that larger one please."
Jim
Thanks Jim, that could be a lot of fun. Or tell someone you keep a $100 bill under the little one and see if they look when you leave the room!
Take care,
Gary
Boy, you make everything look so easy! You should consider changing your name to the Teacher 1947. Seriously this looked like a fun project and it turned out great. Beautiful piece of wood.
Thanks so much David! It was a lot of fun to make and the color of this piece of wood just seem to fall into place to help with the look.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
The color and grain are beautiful and I really love the roundness and size of it. I love watching your videos and the way you can see what the wood wants to be.
Thanks so much Cecilia I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Take care,
Gary
Hi Gary
Very very nice work 😉👍👍👍
Take care
Morgan
Hi Morgan, thank you for watching and happy you liked it.
Been very busy and looking forward to watching your latest.
Gary
Gary, I could go on and on about how much I like this but let me just say, Thank You!
Well thank you as well Michael. for watching and commenting.
Gary
Very clever and skilful turning 👀🌈
Thank you David and thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow, that is beautiful. I thought multi axis turnings required complicated geometry but this was easy. Thanks.
Thank you James. If you break it down geometry can be easy and lots of fun.
Thanks for watching, Gary
That is so awesome. Beautiful wood and I love the look of a ‘bowl in a bowl’. Beautiful shape and I love that finish too. Great job. Bravo!
Thank you Mary. They are lots of fun to make.
Hi Gary...
Amazing job as ever... I wasn't sure how you were going to accomplish this one...
Very clever and a beautiful result...
Take care...All the best.....Andy
Thank you very much Andy. That is what makes these so much fun.
Wondering how the heck your going to do it and in the end it is very simple.
Happy you enjoyed the video.
Cheers,
Gary
Hi Gary London plane is a beautiful wood and you made an amazing bowl x😊🇬🇧❤️bowl within a bowl wow x
Thank you Jane. For sure London Plane is a very pretty wood.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice project Bowl in bowl beautiful piece finishing is awesome take care my friend.
Thank you Sagar. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Super project Gary. So enjoyable to watch. Thanks for sharing your skill with us amateurs.
Thank you Mike. I appreciate your comment. Keep turning and trying new things when you are ready. This is a cool looking turning and not all that hard.
Take care,
Gary
Good afternoon, Gary. This was a very fun project. Definitely need to try this. Thanks for the fun video.
Hi Ray , I think you should give this a try. It is really fun to do and to watch that second bowl appear.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Not sure how I missed this one, very nice Gary! And a new technique learned for me!
Thank you Chris! I think I have missed a few that I have planned on watching as well. Was busy all weekend celebrating our anniversary but getting caught back up now.
Take care,
Gary
Hello Gary, nice piece and great woodturning skills. Well explained and good camerawork too. Thanks for sharing. Happy turning!
Thank you very much. I appreciate your comments and thanks for watching,
Gary
very interesting. I assumed you would use one of those tools that let you cut out the bowl shape and create another bowl from that. This was not what I expected. Neat and you don't have to worry about the kids knocking the inside bowl out. LOL
Thank you Chris. I was wondering if it might be taken as coring out a bowl. Actually hoping it was so it would be a big surprise.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
I love the design and the bowl. Well done.
Dave.
Thank you very much. Happy you enjoyed it.
Gary
Great work Gary 👏.
Thank you very much Michael!
Wow Gary outstanding and very beautiful I love it take care and God bless my friend
Thank you Mike it was a lot of fun to do. Happy you liked it. God Bless!
Take care my friend,
Gary
Simply brilliant... from another 1947 Papa.
Thank you Nato. So another 1947 Papa...very cool. I am early 1947
Gary
Thank you, Gary, for reply! We are a good vintage year... You are simply amazing woodturning. I'm a retired forester, living in beautiful Palouse, near Pullman, WA. My dream is to have my own woodshop. I have all tools needed already in place. I have cutt some black locust trees in the property, a few the pieces will go to make vases. We will see... I plan to watch all your UA-cam collection. Watch out for this competition! Hope we keep in touch. Be safe. Be well.
@@nato2959 thanks again. I love having a shop where I can have fun building things. I have built a lot of furniture as well but pretty much stick with wood turning now.
Let me know if you ever have any questions.
Take care,
Gary
That's a really cool bowl! I've never seen one like that before! I'm going to have to watch this a few times! To figure out if I want to tackle one!
Keep on turning!
Heather 🇨🇦
Wow! That's a lot of exclamation points!!🤣
Thank you Heather. I am pretty sure you will handle this one just fine.
Best of luck,
Gary
Well I guess you made you point !!!!!!!!!! LOL
Really cool bowl. The grain is beautiful.
Thank you Judith. Yes the grain is very nice and I have been trying to figure out how to best use this piece of wood.
Worked out great because I wanted to make another one of these and smaller.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Pretty piece, smart method,👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Gao and thanks for watching.
Gary
Gary well done
Thank you John and thanks for watching,
Gary
Awesome concept on the bowl on a bowl. Very nice 👍
Thank you Skip. Happy you enjoyed it.
What a cool idea beautiful turning 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you Dennis, happy you like it and thanks for watching.
Gary
Gary, what a cool turning! Quite an illusion of bowl inside of a bowl. I had seen the other video with the bigger one and was quite impressed. As always thank you for the fine videos!
Thank you Mark. I was going to wait awhile before making another one but that piece of wood was begging to be turned. And it was perfect for this.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
What a great idea. It is absolutely beautiful.
Thank you Jean. Happy you liked it and thanks for watching,
Gary
That is absolutely fantastic and very skilled my eyesight is failing but I'm going to do one of those
Thank you very much Pat I appreciate you watching and commenting,
Gary
You make some of the neatest bowls!!!
Well thank you Kelly I appreciate the comment and thanks for watching.
Gary
Wonderful. Sometimes it takes me a while to see how it will end. But very nice!
Thank you Laura. It does look tricky but it is actually fairly easy.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
That is really cool. My wife likes it very much and wants me to make one. At some point I will give it a try. Quite the talking piece. I really enjoy your videos because you do so many different kinds of turnings. Thank you
Thank you very much Michael! I made this for my wife so you should give it a try. It is a very cool piece and fun to make.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Great idea for an unusual bowl.
Thank you Doug and thanks for watching,
Gary
I would have never thought to do that. I guess that's I am still a beginner. Love your work and how you explain it. Thanks Tim
Thank you Tim you will find it fun to do.
Take care,
Gary
Nice piece Gary, you continue to be an inspiration for future projects.
Thank you Ronald! I make a list of things I want to do and then check them off. This was on the list and I just added something else to the list. It is not getting any smaller LOL!
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That was very interesting and unusual. Thanks so much for sharing. It's always a joy.
Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.
Gary
What a very nice project. Grear job.
Thank you very much and thanks for watching.
Gary
Unique and beautiful. Great job.
Thank you Robert! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
That is another beautiful bowl. I always look forward to your videos. I was not sure how you were going to make it look like two bowls but toward the end it became clear. Very nice. Be well
Thank you Linda, yes this is one of those that you do not see it happen till it is almost dine. Lots of fun to do.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Gary that was interesting all the way through I was intrigued on what you were making, fantastic buddy well done
Thank you Alan! I have done 2 of these and this one was just as exciting to do as the first. Happy you liked it.
Gary
GORGEOUS! And so clever. Would frustrate a few people I know.
Thank you Lyndsey. Yes I know some who would keep trying to get the bowls lined up.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
As usual nice work Gary.
Thanks so much Damiano!
Papa,
That is one beautiful hunk of wood. And, as I have come to expect, masterfully shaped; but into a most unexpected result 😋.
Thank you. Keep the aspidistra flying!
Paul
Thank you Paul and thanks for watching.
Gary
Very, very nice Gary. This video is now in my saved group for future reference.
Thank you Michael. Yes I know a few others who have put it on their list to do. It is lots of fun and looks more complex than it is.
Have fun!
Gary
Gary, that is so awesome...you never cease to amaze me!
Thank you very much Carol. Happy you enjoyed it. I know it was a lot of fun to do.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
So very cool what a great looking piece 👍😎👍😎
Thank you Luie, I really enjoyed making it and my wife loves it.
Take care,
Gary
Awesome bowl . Never thought of using a template, what a great idea.👍. Something I'll have to try.
Thank you Robert. I used templates and that black crayon at work for turning patterns that had to match the drawings perfectly. Matter of fact that was the very same black crayon or one of the ones I had at work.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That is seriously cool turning
Thank you very much Patricia. Happy you enjoyed it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Very nice, Gary!
Thank you Magen, happy you liked it.
Take care,
Gary
Great work Gary 👏! That's something different to try for sure. Think I'll keep this in mind and try it some day. Take care and GOD BLESS 🙏!
Thank you Stephen. It is different and very fun so give it a tryu.
God Bless,
Gary
Just one great idea after another, those are a great conversation piece!!
Thanks Tom, it was a lot of fun to do.
Take care.
Gary
What a cool project! That’s really neat. You made me look up London Plane; interesting wood. Also really liked the trick with the template and black crayon.
Thank you Mark! London Plane is a very interesting wood.
That black crayon on trick is something I used at work when turning a shape on things like pump and valve body patterns. they had to be turned to the dimensions on the drawings and that was the best way to get them exact.
Thanks for watcing,
Gary
That is so cool! I don't think I've seen that before. Interesting and beautiful! Cheers
Thank you John. Lots of fun to do and even though it is smaller than the other one I like this one better.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
A very cool, project. Nicely done. Thank you! 👍👍
Thank you Jerry and thanks for watching.
Take care,
Gary
Très , très belle réalisation, mille BRAVOS !!!
Merci beaucoup et merci d'avoir regardé.
Gary
Thanks for the video. Now I have to try making one. It is one of those bowls is "how did you make that". Great job.
Thank you Dwight! Happy you liked it. Or someone to make them line up thinking there is 2 bowls there.
thanks for watching,
Gary
Thank you for another great video Gary. Looks like another one for the bucket list! Hope I can do one justice.
Thank you Richard. I say this a lot but this is just not all that hard to do.
Best of luck,
Gary
Awesome Gary you never cease to amaze me with the work you do stay safe friend👍👍👍👍
Thank you radar! I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Take care,
Gary
This is a awesome piece!
Thank you Ronnie and thanks for watching,

Gary
Thats amazing Papa, thanks for posting.
Thank you David and thanks for watching.
Gary
Wow! Brilliant idea
Thank you Pat, happy you liked it.
Gary
What a great idea!
Thank you James. Happy you enjoyed the process.
Take care,
Gary
Very nice, unique piece. Thanks
Thank you Ward, happy you liked it.
Gary
Well done. I like this method using a ball-n-socket joint to do the offset turning. I’ve seen a couple of others that make it so complicated. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much Doug. Making it look complicated does not make it complicated and impossible.
My goal is to make it look as simple as it is so others who want to can give it a try.
Funny thing is a ball and socket joint is something we nothing to do it it's design. We just use it to our benefit.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Clever. Gorgeous!
Thank you Stuart, happy you enjoyed it.
Gary
That is cool and came out looking great. Nice work.
Thanks so much! Happy you liked it.
Gary
Hi Gary. Wonderful piece again. What I really like about your work is the explanation you do, apart from the piece itself, of course. Mentioning the rpm’s and the tool used helps an eternal beginner, like myself, a great deal. Your other video’s (on the tangent bowls and the jigs you’ve made) are very helpful. Many thanks for sharing! __Frank
Thank you very much Frank. I know that some of these things seem very complex and I like to show that they can be done by all.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
2 hours later, I finally watched it and your method was certainly better than mine (of course!) Now I'll have to try it your way. I could not help laugh at your comment at about 18:45 about how to shape the bottom, "She decided flat so that's what I'll do." Oh, how familiar!
Thank you Josh. Wow you tested your method in 2 hours. That is pretty darn good.
The other one I left the bottom round and it sits fine. But having it on her desk and using it to put things in I think a flat bottom was a good choice she made.
But my next turning I am not going to let her deicide what to do LOL. You will have to wait.
Gary
300th LIKE! I remember the first one of these you did. Some how I remember the steps you went through a little differently but, must be about the same. This is just a very cool turning and one I find myself wanting to try. You've explained it all very well, professor! The London Plane Sycamore was a perfect choice for this piece and as always, you got a great finish on it. Great video, fun to watch. Keep'em coming, my friend! 😊
Phil
Cool, thanks Phil. I like the 300 number. It is the perfect bowling score. Not that I ever got one LOL.
I think I probably did it different. I try to look for better ways to do things. Not sure if I did or not but it went well.
For sure this London Plane sure worked nice for the effect
It did take a nice finish as well. Pretty cool wood.
Thanks for watching buddy!
Gary
Very nice, and great idea.
Thank you Robert. I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
You make it look easy. I may try it. Thanks for sharing
Thank you Garth. You should and let me know how it goes.
Take care,
Gary
Really nice turning! The multi-axis turning is pretty cool. I have a piece of sycamore that came down as the result of an ice storm. I think I may have to put it in the que for turning before long. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Jim. I really like how this piece looked and will look for more myself.
Thanks for watching.
Gary
Gary, what a cool video! I can't wait to try it! Thanks for being an inspiration!
Thank you very much Cindy. There are just a few steps make this and not all that hard. Best of luck!
Gary
That is realty, really cool! Definitely going n my bucket list of projects.
Thank you very much Tom. The important thing to do is make the bottom as close to a perfect sphere as you can. This allows the piece to rotate and give a equal step around the part.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
And that`s me thinking how on earth Gary is going to core the bowl??? and I was wrong :):) Beautiful piece Sir and as always excellent finish!!! I think I will start posting my creations for you to finish them:):)
Happy turnings
Yiannis
Well thank you Yiannis! I promise you my finish method is easy enough to learn. The main ingredient needed is practice and patience. Both are free LOL. I would be happy to explain in detail and have thought about doing a more detailed video on it.
Take care my friend,
Gary
Wow that's brilliant i was a while fore i got what you meant bowl in a bowl but we like that alot, cracking finish as always, going to ev to watch this again and maybe again and have a go at that. All the best from Lincolnshire UK
Thank you Gary, I appreciate you watching and hope you enjoy making one when you do give it a try.
Take care,
Gary
Wow, I've never seen anything like that before. Took me a bit to wrap my head around how you were going to make it work, but once I did I just loved it. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Mike. Happy you could see how this happens.
Thanks for watching and commenting.
Gary
Love the shape at 6:14.
Thank you Morgan! I like the shape at that point as well but it would not work for the final shape I was doing.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
@@ThePapa1947 can you do another project with the shape there?
@@morgancalvi6675 sure I will pick a nice piece of wood.
Love it, I sure enjoy your channel.
Thank you Paul and I sure appreciate you watching.
Take care,
Gary
Love your work mate.
Isopropyl alcohol apparently is good for the glue.
Thank you Collin. I am guessing it is very similar to DNA.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Fascinating !
Thank you Herbie and thanks for watching.
Gary
Lovely!
Thank you Fran!
I think this is one of my favourites (sorry I can’t spell it ‘correctly’) 🌞
Thank you Ray! Your spelling is perfect...based on where you live LOL
Either way I appreciate you watching and commenting.
Gary
A fascinating and uniquely beautiful bowl!
Many thanks Pauline!
Nice project, I like how that came out.
Wes @ Piedra Designs
Thank you Wes, happy you like it and thanks for watching,
Gary
Wow! That’s cool 😎
Thank you Sean, happy you liked it.
Gary
What a cute little bowl, Gary! I can see why your wife snatched it up. Very clever! I always look forward to seeing what you have in store for us.
Thank you Marcia, happy you enjoy my videos. Next week will be different and it is something I have been waiting to turn.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Good imagination….thanx
Thank you Robert, happy you liked it.
Gary
Thank You Gary...Fun adventure as always... I could not figure out what you were doing at first. Very inventive and it looks great. A real eyecatcher I like a lot. Something else Gary that I like is knowing when I watch your show I never have to use the mouse to X-out those annoying popups that drive me CRAZY, ha..TM
Thank you very much TM! This was a lot of fun for sure.
You will not have to worry about those popups. I have a hard time with them as well and loose track of what I was watching.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Inspiring!
Thank you Scott and thanks for watching.
Gary
Gary, Thanks again for another great video. We all appreciate you sharing your knowledge and expertise. Nothing better than learning from a master!
Thank you plekguy. I appreciate your comments. And thanks so much for watching,
Gary
Really nice, Gary. When I first saw the thumbnail, I was trying to figure out how you did it. Once you said you were turning it into a ball shape, a light bulb went off in my head and I knew where you were going. Great idea.
Bill
Thank you Bill! Happy you figured out why you needed the ball shape. That is the key to it.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Neat project. Well done and thx for sharing.
Thank you too! And thanks for watching,
Gary
Gary, that is one beautiful piece of wood. I really like it and I'm glad you showed the other item at the end for comparison. I laughed when you mentioned the rain-delay in tilling the garden. I've been wanting to do mine (here in Regina, SK), but the ground is still too wet, and now we have 2-3 days of rain ahead. 😂
Thank you very much Grant. I did get the gardened till for the second time. But the rain is still hanging around here as well.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
That's unusual & very pretty!
Wonder what a crazy version would look like? Maybe too crazy.
Thank you very much. So what would you consider crazy? I would happy to give it a go.
Thanks for watching,
Gary
Well, those crazy bowls of various arrangements of segmented wood fascinate me with how the patterns morph & bend with the changing angles of the turn. I just wonder what this technique [2 in 1 bowl] would do to those patterns.
I'm sorry. The term I used, 'crazy' was incorrect. I see they're called 'dizzy' bowls. Sorry for my error.
Crazy or dizzy, I love your work though. 👍😀
No problem I actually like that term "CRAZY" and I was thinking on some sort of a segment bowl that was a bowl in a bowl. So we shall see. Probably not a dizzy bowl. It is hard to get much of a wall thickness and to get rounded bottom. But will work on something.
Gary
As I answered in the other comment I have been thinking about something that was glued up. The way a dizzy bowl is made it would be difficult so it will need to be a new style.
Great idea though!
Awesome project Gary! And even more detail on the bowl in a bowl than your previous video (which I have watched several times now). I really like this type of project and it will be one of the first few efforts that I undertake. Really looking forward to seeing if I can make it look like yours. A beautiful piece of wood as well. I have never heard of London Plane. Thank you very much for your time and effort for our benefit. See you next week!
Thank you Mark. I should watch the old one. I try to take a fresh look at everything in case I can improve on the last.
For sure give it a try and you will find you will be successful. My other one was the first I did and was happy with it. I have been thinking of doing this and have the rim of the bowl go inward. It did a little.
Yes the London Plane is very pretty wood.
I think I can almost promise you that next week's will be something you will be able to make with no problems.
Take care,
Gary
papa are you at all interested in trying your hand at any epoxy resin projects? resin/wood and resin/burl hybrid pieces is what i think you would personally enjoy exploring the most. it might be a little too messy or finicky for your taste, i dunno, but the possibilities are endless and allow you to be very creative which you have in abundance. as long as you don’t mind being buried in resin shavings of course ;-)
would love to hear your thoughts and opinions on the topic.
Well I doubt it would be too messy for me. I worked as a wood pattern maker and often we had to make resin molds to cast duplicate resin patterns. Also did epoxy and fiberglass layups for core boxes and patterns.
So I have done more resin work than most who use if for making resin and wood bowls. And the end results were sold for a lot more than what a resin bowl would get.
So that is the reason I am not interested in using it for my wood bowls.
Another big reason is not only is it messy but the fumes coming off the resin is not good and the fumes made while turning are not good. Maybe too much exposure to it but it is not good for my system.
I think some of the resin projects are very nice though.
I hope my answer makes sense.
Thanks,
Gary
