Why We Don't Teach Readings (yet!)
As mentioned in the introduction video to this series ( ua-cam.com/video/RKWrWRFyfYo/v-deo.html ), it is my philosophy that it is a WASTE OF TIME to learn the readings for each kanji in isolation. I explain WHY in that video.
To learn how to read kanji, I think it is best to learn WORDS that contain that kanji in the context of SENTENCES. We WILL be doing that in this series, after learning the meanings and writings for the 118 kanji in the JLPT N5 and Kanken 10 tests.
So fear not! You WILL be learning how to read them in the near future. 😊

Chewing through these introductory kanji lessons two at a time to catch up. This lesson so far has been my favorite. While skimming through actual Japanese Instagram accounts, I can quickly identify these kanji parts and can assume “this kanji must have to do with studying” etc. I hope you keep up the good work.

I hit that like and subscribe, and rang the bell, and put this in my calendar. Remember, people in the US, the videos come out an hour earlier on the clock now that we're on standard time! Also, a pro tip: If you're putting a reminder in your computer's calendar, put the time in the calendar entry in as 10:30 am JST on Thursday, set it to repeat every week, and it'll show up at the right time in the US despite daylight savings time changes. (Did I get that time right, Andy?)

I’m really loving these videos! Thank you for them!
I especially enjoy the brush painting of each Kanji.
I would ask, though, if possible in the flow of your videos, please slow down the countdown during the quiz section. I try to write them on my palm, but it takes me a moment to recollect and write the character, and I always feel like I’m a second or two slow before the reveal. Perhaps that’s a me problem, but just wanted to give feedback.
Thank you for all you do!

I’m glad to hear that you are enjoying them!
I hear you on the pause thing, but the reason I made it the length that I did is just to give viewers a chance to pause the video. As we move forward and kanji become more complicated, there’s no possible way I could make the pause long enough for anyone to write them out! hehe

For the Kanji child (字) the story I imagined was: a child is learning the alphabets at his own house or under the roof of his own house (since uk many children start learning the alphabets at their homes first before going to kindergarden or something)

The story I have for 字 is simple.
A small child is inside practicing their letters (ABC).

I'm following along even though I know them. It would be silly for the series to just arbitrarily start like 74 kanji in

Hi Andy! I’m just writing this in hope of a little response for maybe some guidance on Tobira, I’m a second year university student and my major is Japanese, I’m really struggling with the tobira gateway to advanced Japanese book and I’m wondering if you have any advice or useful resources that can help? The classes have brutal and we move so quick through things along with having 16 grammar points to learn a week, it’s a lot to keep up with and I’m a bit behind. Any advice would be great and thank you for all the great videos!

Hi Andy, I’m an old beginner, determined to learn Japanese . Using Tofugu, I learned Hiragana and Katakana… I’ve tried Pimsleur, Rocket Japanese and a bunch of other apps. Now I am using an Italki tutor.. We use Genki…I am in lesson two… I have not started Kanji, yet… I think it might be too early in my journey. Not sure, though. I am intrigued with your courses/membership… do you have vocab decks available…. And, can you help me with my process?? Best, John

how come the video didn''t teach how to pronounce

    • @coltynstone-lamontagne
      @coltynstone-lamontagne 6 місяців тому +4

The pronunciation is not part of this series. The reason for this is that there are many different pronunciations based on which word they are in and it is not helpful to just learn the pronunciations on their own.
Once you know the meaning of and can recognize kanji, it makes learning words easier. It will be easier to learn the pronunciations in actual words that you are learning than to juat hear them out of context😊
