Why We Don't Teach Readings (yet!)
As mentioned in the introduction video to this series ( ua-cam.com/video/RKWrWRFyfYo/v-deo.html ), it is my philosophy that it is a WASTE OF TIME to learn the readings for each kanji in isolation. I explain WHY in that video.
To learn how to read kanji, I think it is best to learn WORDS that contain that kanji in the context of SENTENCES. We WILL be doing that in this series, after learning the meanings and writings for the 118 kanji in the JLPT N5 and Kanken 10 tests.
So fear not! You WILL be learning how to read them in the near future. 😊
I'll remember 女 as KuNoIchi (because kunoichi is the female version of ninja, they infiltrated and acted as spies.) So this helps me a lot!
Thank you, it helped me
He is getting more and more unhinged as we progress
In my studies I learned 𠂇=hand 又=hand so 友=hand+hand=friend.
This makes things like 取 収 布 受 easier to understand later.
刀=sword
力=power (sword swung powerfully creating woosh)
刃=blade (sword with slash on blade)
Hope this helps some folks!
I learnt 女 as くノ一 is a female ninja
The kanji for woman looks like a star because women are ✨ stars ✨
Sadly I won't be able to watch live tonight, the whole family is really sick so I have to take care of them. Dropping in to leave my like and comment now though. Have a good time everyone.
I hope everyone feels better soon! お大事に!
That "kunoichi" part exploded my brain.
I actually love that right hand plus left hand makes friend and it’s not that hard to remember either. It’s like two people holding hands walking next to each other. That only works if a left hand holds a right hand (or vice versa)
The 友 story could be two friends holding arms side to side. One friend uses the left arm and the other the right one. Thanks for the videos. Also, I would honestly love if you made videos saying words with the combination of the kanji we are learning ❤
Those come after we learn the first 118. 😊 almost half way there.
I already knew these ones but it's a good refresher since I haven't studied Kanji in years.
I just got recommended the wa vs ga video, then watched the real basic sentence one and I'm hooked, the method of teaching here is great. I'll be binging this channel. Thank you for this top tier content!
Thank you so much for these. Actually amazing
Great initiative ! I've gained new motivation to start studying Kanji . Hoping to master Kanji like a pro with the readings through your playlist. Thanks Andy !
Thanks for the new video @ToKiniAndy, sadly I have to get back to work, but I'm finding the series really enjoyable. I find learning in a conversational way quite effective, nice approach!
Hi @ToKiniAndy! Just wanted to thank you for all the effort and work you put into all those lessons, eventhough I am already way beyond in my studies I really enjoy watching your vídeos, especially the makingupstories-part is SO important and useful!!! You're becoming part of my saturday morning with coffee, hahaaha!!! A big hug from Spain! Cheers man!!!
whats your workout routine andy? i listen to your videos while working out!
Thanks Andy, youre a cool dude, cooler than Ando for sure.
I have a question, I just started learning Japanese through genki 3rd edition. Im watching your older videos of you gong through each lesson. I understand the the general topic of each lesson but I dont know words too well. I can spell out and sound out the hiragana but have no clue what they mean, expect for the basics. is that normal for someone who is newer to this or am I behind?
Do you also konw if there is a answer key to the genki workbook/
I'm surprised by no mention that the Strength kanji looks nearly identical to the 'ka' katakana.
ナ and ヌ are very good friends 友
for a woman kanji i creat this story hope it helps
No is holding japanese umbrella usually a woman hold it .
Please could someone explain to me how: 大 = Big, 丈 = height and 夫 = husband; together (大丈夫 daijōbu) means “are you okay?”
I really need answer to this question real quick: from where I can buy Japanese textbooks in english(like tango n5 genki and stuff) in USA?
amazon
Strength sure looks like カ
カ sure looks a lot like 九 (nine)
Why is the left hand part taught as "Fu" and No", instead of the Katakana "Nu"?
Do you mean the 又 part beneath the left hand part in 友? If so, it is because it is based on the kanji 又, not ヌ.
@@ToKiniAndy That makes sense. I just saw it as easier to remember it as ヌ
for my 女 story is: women have double xx chromosomes because the kanji looks like 2 Xs combine
Am I missing something, why aren't you giving the different pronunciations of the characters and some compound words they appear in???
The pinned comment has more about that. 😉
@ToKiniAndy I'm glad you decided to add that as a pinned comment! It seems a lot of people did not watch the intro to this series (to be fair they look separate to the series when you just look at your videos time-line instead of looking in the playlist).
I fully agree with your learning methodology because I realized it takes WAY more effort to learn readings without words and it didn't end up helping much when I eventually learned the words since it felt like a toss up between the options I learned haha. Thanks for not wasting our time and being super helpful!
Yes, I'm working my through the Genki 1 videos and these new ones pop up because I recently subscribed and so I didn't see the first of this series. @@coltynstone-lamontagne
I applaud the effort put in these videos but different strokes for different folks…no pun intended.
I’m not seeing the relevancy in identifying the parts. Like… so what if one part is a “fu” and one part is a “no”. If there was more context it’d be great.
I find the more complex kanji have an easier time explaining the meaning such as your example with 男. 2 radicals that actually make sense to mean “Man”.
How do you relate “Fu” and “No” to right hand/again? You make a story but it still doesn’t really explain it.
Another reason why I don’t like RTK. Arbitrary meaning to kanji parts that isn’t the actual meaning. Such like 一 is referred to “ground”. Sure it looks like the ground but you really should learn kanji by their original meaning.
Not sure if what I am saying makes sense…
They aren’t arbitrary though. They are the recognized meanings in Japanese. They won’t start clicking though until we start creating more difficult kanji from those parts. 😊
And to add to that, it’s important to choose one meaning and stick with it so that it’s easier to memorize later more complex kanji. 😊
In other words, it’s more to aid memorization, not to explain the meaning.
Everything I was going to say was already covered by the the video creator.
I just want to reinforce that having a way to refer to parts that you are already used to makes learning the complex kanji later WAY easier since you are remembering a series of parts instead of seemingly arbitrary lines. It will make sense I promise👍
I've definitely felt this way in the past. Especially if you are focused on reading it can feel like learning the parts is a waste of time. It's when you go to hand write that you realize how limited your knowledge is without learning the parts. It depends what your priorities are. I am getting a lot out of their commentary about what Japanese people call the parts because that information is very hard to come by otherwise.
