- I know there's already a lot of Amy vs Tarja vids up but there doesn't seem to be one that fairly or accurately assesses their vocal ability, so I decided to try and make a video that did just that. It will compare all their different registers instead of just focusing on high notes. I tried to be as objective as possible and fairly represent both women.
I know that fans/stans of each will probably flood this video with arguments but please TRY to be objective. I hope everyone who watches this enjoys it.
Conclusion: Amy is Amy and Tarja is Tarja.

Caliya Ledesma I have no problems with Tarja, I really like some of the songs she made with Nightwish. I love old Nightwish songs and I like Floor Jansen when she sings them, but I've not listened to the new Nightwish yet, and I hate Anette Olzon's era with Nightwish (no offence as well).
Amy Lee is really unique, creative and innovative and she may not be opera singer but she has no structures and composes beautiful music, mixed sometimes with classical and I love that. She is truly amazing.
Galion Silevion Yeah. I love classical music as well. Yeah, Evanescense's songs are really beautiful and the lyrics are so deep and complex, you have to listen to it many times just to get the full meaning. Also, they have actual meanings, unlike the crap we get nowadays. Hopefully, they really perform in Japan on November 21, which is a good date. If you know Pokémon, you'll know what I mean.
Tarja is much more operatic naturally, Amy is more of a belter, they have different voice types.

Arley Alml esto es como yo cuando me gusta una chica (o cómo todos) a veces uno sabe que cierta chica es más linda que otra, pero uno prefiere a la menos linda por gustos, precisamente me gusta mucho más la dulzura de la voz de Amy, y en general Amy es más dulce, es más "inocente en todo sentido" debo reconocer que la de Tarja es una voz impresionante, y puedo decir sin temor a equivocarme que es mucho mejor, pero no me gusta, hablando de técnica y talento natural obviamente tarja es mejor, pero en otro sentido, en uno más personal puedo decir que Amy es mucho mejor, ya que no me gusta en nadas voces tan gruesas, yo que soy "tosco" busco dulzura, tal vez porque los opuestos se atraen, no se, gracias por el aporte técnico, investigar sobre el tema, (siempre que hay algo para investigar y me incumbe me término aficionado)

I've seen Evanescence live once and they were perfect, I saw Tarja doing her solo stuff once and thought she was excellent. However I think Amy puts a hell of a lot more emotion in her singing because a lot of it is personal to her. She writes about her life and I think that's why I find certain Ev songs can bring me to tears, it's because I can relate. But I have met Tarja and she was just the sweetest thing. I love them both but I cannot compare them.

One cant just simply compare these icons. They are both in different types of genres of rock. Both are simply amazing. Its impossible to say they're both horrible singers cause they're not. The only difference is that Tarja has been in the game longer than Amy, but who cares. I love em both. Anyone who has commented negative shit about these two wonderful Singer simply has no taste, no talent nor any brain cells.

Amy puts more power and emotion behind her voice. I cry at night listening to her. Her Voice is absolutely beautiful.
Singing opera takes a lot less energy than belting like Amy. I am a singer as well, and I can tell, amy has a huuuge lung capacity and a super strong voice. I experimented with Opera, and I could sing a whole lot higher than I could singing like Amy. Amy's voice is more powerful. Just saying

I've been a huge fan of both Evanescence and Nightwish since 2002, I still happily listen to both artists today and both bands hold very special places in my heart. Who is the better singer? Well, on a technical level, I think Tarja has more control of her voice and can probably be considered the better singer. However, the energy, passion and emotion Amy puts into her singing, her lyrics and her performance make her, to me, far more entertaining to watch. She does, however, hit a lot of bum notes and her voice can sound quite strained at times. So it depends on what you want out of a live performance, I've been lucky to see both bands live and I cannot fault Tarja for her on point singing nor can I fault Amy for her on stage performance. Basically, these women kick ass and we should celebrate them both for their talents :)

I love both singers however I'd like to point out, that Amy does not sing all opera so she's switching to her head voice from normal singing whereas tarja usually sustains her opera throughout her songs. Also, when Amy sings on concerts she moves around the scene really fast compared to Tarja which makes the singing a little more bit difficult. In the end, they're both Angels!

This needs to be updated, Amy's recent live shows have been phenomenal.(synthesis concert and novarock) She has improved sooo much in the last 4 years or so.
Amy tiene un problema que es bastante difícil, ella es muy enérgica, no se queda en un solo sitio, ella va de acá para allá sin descansar, canta enferma y no cuida su voz, lo que nos da de que a veces, se le vaya el tono de voz por un tema de respiración, pero no llega a desafinar, es un desliz de la voz que suele suceder. al no estudiar canto, Amy tiene complicaciones con el aire, lo que no ayuda y también, sus canciones exigen bastante en vivo, son muchas notas complicadas etc. En cuanto a Tarja, tiene la voz completamente diferente, ella tiene una voz fuerte y grave o algo así, en cambio, la voz de Amy es fina y suave, Tarja es una cantante que no tiene comparación, y Amy, a su estilo, también, son dos artistas diferentes, pero la verdad, las dos hacen algo que es muy complicado: Les trasmiten sentimiento a la música, uno puede llorar con sus letras y canciones por el sentimiento que les ponen, por lo menos, es lo que experimento con Evanescence siempre y con Tarja cuando la escucho, aunque, me gusta más Evanescence.

Tarja in my opinion has a more opera-esque voice, and Amy Lee has a more define vocals you would hear in various bands. They're both amazing, but if we're talking voices, Amy Lee has her.

I personally like the natural sound of Amy's voice more but I can tell that Tarja has a better technique. Now, If AMY worked on her technique, she'd be one of the most solid vocalists out there.

Amy plays the piano while singing... the hardest instrument to play while singing, IMO. I like both bands, though. Nightwish sucks now, but with Tarja they were pretty sweet.

I don't really feel it's fair to compare them. They got two different types of voices and singing styles. Tarja is an rock-opera and opera singer while Amy ain't. (Not sure what her singing type is called)

I was about to make this comment, glad I read others first.
Yeah...never really understood why this comparison is a thing either. Like some others have said they are completely different singers, despite some similarities. From a purely technical standpoint, Tarja is easily superior, having that training. Amy doesn't always have the most polished on-stage vocal performance, given all the running and headbanging she does like there's no tomorrow (of course, she sounds breathtaking when just sitting at a piano, in a low-key environment). But Amy makes up for that by the fact you can both hear and see that she is always feeling the music resonating within every fiber of her body, singing her heart out. Almost literally. She doesn't always care how she sounds and is more concerned about being absorbed in the music. Tarja is generally standing in place or at least not moving around too much so she can give very clean vocals. Amy is very physical with her singing and her performance, allowing for very strong energy on stage, but usually meaning less for the singing. Two very different singers, and equally different stage presences. Not one better than the other necessarily. But really at the end of the day none of the this really matters; the music each of their bands produce is too different, and it's largely preference.
Of course, these "vs" videos will always be the spawn of fanboy/fangirl mudslinging contests; no need for any overly critical hate, folks. People can like what they like. So play nice now...
I've seen Evanescence live, and Amy's voice was AMAZING. I think that maybe in the beginning of her career, she wasn't as good live (it's hard to sing live night after night, running around and singing with your worn out voice). But I think over time in her career, she got better, because I saw Evanescence twice when they realeased their self titled album, and Amy's voice was amazing. :) Tara is great too.
Amy is an amazing singer and so is Tarja Turunen. It's a close call but I'm going to say that Amy wins.

These clips didn't do Tarja much justice...the ones with Amy Lee were much longer. In my opinion, Tarja's voice is so much more powerful and moving than Amy Lee's will ever be.

I don't understand the point of this video. They have two different styles, two different vocal types (Lee is a mezzo soprano and Turunen is a lyric soprano so Lee's voice is deeper) and one is trained and the other isn't (Lee was just in choir in school and Turunen takes/has taken vocal lessons; Lee is a classically trained pianist, however).
Both are awesome singers, but it's really stupid to compare them since they have next to nothing in common. (I'm personally way more of an Evanescence fan but Nightwish is alright, I used to listen to them sometimes.)

I love both, but it is obvious that Tarja has a greater vocal range and has better perfomances live, I particularly prefer the voice of Amy, however it is undeniable that live it has much worse performances than those of Tarja, but it is worth remembering that Tarja Is a Soprano and has taken singing lessons since the age of 15, at the Savonlinna Music Academy, while Amy is a Mezzo-Soprano and has never taken singing lessons (she herself stated this in an interview), Amy also has a stage presence More active, does jumps, headbangers, runs across the stage, this takes her breath a lot, even more so for those who have never trained how to control and keep their breath, so I believe that if Amy had the same vocal preparation that Tarja she would come out much better live, anyway, the two are wonderful singers and they have incredible voices, so let's keep listening to them both right! :)

Tarja has a more limited vocal range (F3-G6) but she control her voice perfectly...Amy's vocal range is wider (Eb3-E7) but she can't control it perfectly.
I love them both, I can't choose just one. Tarja is more professional but Amy is more gifted.

E7 is not part of Amy's vocal range. The highest she has sung live was an E6 in a video where she's warming up, while the highest she has sung in a live performance is a C#6. She can't sing up to E7. She's never done it live nor in studio. Her live vocal range is Eb3 - E6 ( 3 octaves and 1 semitone ) and her studio vocal range is C3 - E6 ( 3 octaves and 2 notes ).

They're both great singers, it comes down to individual preference and if I liked or wanted to listen to opera I'd do so, but I don't care for opera personally. I like Amy Lee and her unique style of music. She has an amazing soulful voice and it makes me feel something that Tarja's voice does not, it all comes down to individual preference. And as far as the high note comparison...WTF? Who cares who's voice goes higher? It's about whether the music and voice together make a person feel something. Amy Lee's music resonates in my soul and her amazingly beautiful emotional voice makes me feel what she conveys through her songs. Besides Amy Lee has sold over 25 million records and won 2 Grammy's with Evanescence. Tarja who??? Never heard of her until I started seeing comparison's made by people on here trying to drag Amy Lee down. But the facts of her legacy speak for themselves. Enough said.

Comparing a lyrical (operatic) singer like Tarja to a another one with a contemporary technique like Amy, one singing symphonic rock (Tarja) vs. another one signing alternative rock (Amy)....is like comparing a fucking hot dog to Japanese food. Which one is better? It depends on what you feel like eating that particular day, it depends on the time of the day, on the situation, on your personal tastes....and still you can't compare them. One thing is for sure, Amy is far more commercial than Tarja....but that's just in the American market, because In Europe any respectable rock fan knows who Tarja is, even if they don't like Nightwish. Another thing is for sure: listen to a full Nightwish concert, or Tarja as a solo artist singing live....and then listen to a full concert by Evanescence. Tarja and even other singers like Lzzy Hale, Sharon Den Adel, and of course miss Floor Jansen (current Nightwish vocalist) are in fact BETTER LIVE SINGERS. I love Evanescence, but let's be objective here....Amy's voice gets too strained and she can't hit certain notes after a while because she has said it herself, she's not a trained singer. But the other women I mentioned sound AMAZING live even after one hour on stage because they have more technique, and because unlike Amy, they don't go around trying to hit extremely high notes the whole time.

OK my opinion. Leaving aside fan preference and being objective. Tarja has a more technical ability. This is because she spent many years being classically trained whereas Amy didn't have the same training. So although both women can reach the notes in the ranges, Tarja can hold and sustain high notes with far less effort. That being said, Tarja does not belt notes at all, using a different technique, so Amy has more power and focus on the lower ranges. If you ever watch Tarja doing a power rock number, this is more apparent, her notes are too "precise" for the song so it doesn't have the same "punch". So.... Amy expresses better in lower ranges, Tarja in upper ranges. As to who started this genre or that... what a pointless thing to say, both are unique artists with their own style. Anyway if you were going to give a prize out to who started female fronted metal, I would give it to Doro Pesch who was rocking when both these women were in primary school.

Well, Tarja is hitting ultra high notes because of the music genre she sings. Tarja sings symphonic metal, while Amy sings something that has rock, symphonic metal and other influences. Maybe Amy has a lower voice but, come on, she's so awesome! For some reasons, Amy's songs touch my heart more than Tarja's. We cannot deny that Tarja is the queen of her genre, but Amy has created a whole new genre herself and she's amasing. Plus Tarja doesn't move and jump on the stage all the time like Amy..
Amy didn't create anything. It was Tarja and Nightwish that created Operatic Symphonic Metal. Amy just took the blueprint from Within Temptation and tweaked it.

Heather Navalon Heather. Did you ever tried to bounce around with oper tones you have to hit during a song? I sing those tones myself all the time and I can tell that most likely Tarja moves as best as she can. But beside this all I wanna say that Tarja is the Queen of the Symphonic Metal Genre and the most talented woman I know but I also love Amy Lee as a singer because she is such an awesome person. I would never compare them with each other because it's simply not possible. I only clicked on this video because I wanted to see what people will say to this mess..

The thing about this whole Amy Vs. Tarja fued, is that everyone is trying to pit a classically trained opera singer to a raw talent rock singer. They have two totally different styles, and two totally different backgrounds. Amy was a diamond in the rough, who was able to harness her talent, and pretty much train herself. Tarja spent years being taught to sing opera. They're really not similar, and it's really not that easy to try to compare two amazing voices with two different styles.

Tarja es muy buena como soprano/tenor i tiene una gran tecnica , la voz de Emy es mas viva, mas expresiva i sentimental... son dos grandes cantantes que poco tienen que ver... A mi Tarja me deja bastante frio, Amy Lee m'encanta aun que se equivoque, grite, no llegue bien a una nota o no respire bien es una cantante con alma y personalidad que transmite mucho mas que Tarja.

Amy voice can be more powerful, but i have 32y now and i listened Evanescence when a i was around 20, i have been listening Tarja from 5 years ago, be sure i listen her practically every day, her olds songs with Nigthwish and her new songs, i can´t with Evanescence more than 2 songs because it's so depressing, tarja have all kind of songs and her voice it´s beautiful and madure, listen diva for example. in my country Tarja is unknown because never was a comercial product, so sad for Music channels and a generation who never know who was this singer.

Amy's voice is more beautiful and angelic..But Tarja's voice is way more powerful and her technique and live singing is way better.WAY better. She's an inhumanly good singer. But to me, Amy wins. 'Cause the beauty of her voice is incomparable.

I think these kind of videos are interesting as long as they are comparing and objective. Kudos to you for keeping it tasteful, and not turning into a "Who's the best singer" mud slinging. Though it's a pity these kind of videos tends to attract fanatics, trolls and drama llamas.

They both sound great and anyone who thinks Amy is terrible is probably a moronic hipster who's only hating on her because Evanescence was a mainstream band.
The thing is I think their becoming mainstream was a fluke. Once in a while a band crosses over. Metallica is a great example of that. In the case of Evanescence after Fallen I think they have returned to about where their peers are at..
That was terribly unfair. Tarja is classically trained, Amy didn't even have any vocal training at that point other than school choir, Tarja sings entirely in her head voice with an operatic style, Amy sings mostly in her modal register and only uses her head voice in some songs to give a climactic effect, Tarja sings symphonic metal, Amy sings rock, Tarja is a soprano, Amy is a mezzo-soprano. What was that battle even about? It was pointless from every perspective. Of course Tarja will be superior on the upper part especially in her head voice, since that's what she's trained to do and also she is a soprano so she has more ease and support up there. Amy on the other hand has an angelic, hauntingly beautiful tone to her voice that is unmatched, regardless of her technical flaws and limitations. She may not be vocally consistent every time, since she is not trained, but whenever she sits down with her piano and an accoustic set be sure that her voice will take you on a magical dark journey of emotions. She is also a multi-instrumentalist and she writes her own songs, unlike Tarja in Nightwish who had her songs written for her by Tuomas. Each of these ladies have strengths and weaknesses and are very, VERY different technically and stylistic-wise. No comparison should be done between these two for they have nothing in common, other than the fact that they're both female singers in bands.

No comparison... Amy's songs are more rememberal and iconic rock. Amy all the way. And who cares about high notes, it's the music. Amy's songs are way better.
A battle on a mezzo-soprano and a colatura soprano? It's not the same tessitura, so I don't see the fairness. Why not Tarja vs I don't know, Floor Jansen, Manuela Kraller, Dianne van Giersbergen or Heidi Parviainen? Or even just singers that sing classically?

Tarja is in the curve between a full-lyric soprano and a spinto, IMHO.
Tarja is a Lyrical Soprano with 3 octave range. She's amazing, but she not that rare of a bird.
On Tarja's own Facebook page it says she's a _full lyric soprano_ with a voice that can reach mezzo-soprano, contralto, and even coloratura soprano registers.

First Tarja is a lyric soprano, she sings classical crossover, symphonic rock and metal. She was trained since she was a child, obviously she have a improved technic on stage, we. Amy is on alternative metal, please, are u really comparing? Amy didn't even had train, come on, isn't even a fair comparison. Amy has great stage presence and that's an advantage. Tarja sticks to the plan of the song, Amy sometimes just let the voice follow the music, she plays with her voice, bad comparison in my opinion.

There's a difference between having a wide vocal range and singing without feeling, and having a wide vocal range and /actually/ feeling something. Without connecting with your voice, what's the point in singing at all.
