Tarja era Nightwish for me still is the pinnacle of symphonic metal which has never been reached since (Epica came close but its just not the same). And I recently realized that ghost love score is my most favourite song of all time! It is literally beyond masterpiece status, perfect!
Although I agree that Tarja has a good voice, I like Floor's performances much more - her voice has more variations and ornamentations, and that fits this song better (to my opinion).
@@vyacheslav73you must be quite happy with the only Era Tarja song that Floor can sing decently because if you listen to Swanheart, The Siren, Passion Opera, Nemo, The Phantom of the Opera,Ever Dream, Sleeping sun, Slaying the Dreamer in Floor's version the enchantment is gone. Not even the perfect Floor Jansen can match the operatic vocals of the Metal Goddess.
@@micheledjubatie9212 I agree that Tarja has a better opera-style voice. But this is why I didn't like Nightwish and ignored the band in past - there was "too much opera" in their songs. Another point to consider is that Floor, in her earlier performances, tried to match and mimick the Tarja's voice - of course in this case Tarja wins :) Later they adapted songs to her voice and the newer versions sounds better to me. It's just a matter of preference, I guess :) Who prefers the operatic vocals would choose Tarja, who likes a powerful voice with lots of variations would choose Floor :)

Indeed - what does Tuomas have to do with it ... he just composed all the songs of Nightwish ... And yes, Nightwish without Tarja produces great albums, and Tarja is nothing without Nightwish.

Tarja's and Floor's versions of this song are like two responses to a tragic heartbreak. Tarja's version is like quietly weeping. While Floor's version is like loudly wailing. I'm currently in love with Tarja's version but I figured I could listen to each one of them depending on if I need a silent cry or an aggressive shout. And I find it amazing that way.
Can we just not fight over Tarja and Floor for a min and just marvel at how awesome Jukka Nevalainen is on the drums? All this talk about shes better, no shes better, they both deserve plaudits, they are both awesome in their own way. But mad props to Jukka for bringing it every time! Respect!
@@CaesarSalad978 I believe that floor is one of the greatest female vocalists EVER. She is a combination of all NW era's. She was made for what NW is now, no other. I wouldn't want Tarja back in NW today. BUT the early magical NW was Tarja and that's why we were all enchanted by that lineup at that point in history. I prefer tarja to sing certain songs to me.
Tarja was pure magic and still is. I saw her and Marco in São Paulo in April and the magic is still there, intact. I can’t say the same for the last 2 NW albums. I truly believe Tarja and Nightwish is a combination that can never be surpassed by anyone, ever. In a way, she was Nightwish’s muse.

Tuomas had the exceptional Tarja and knew what to write for her. Same with Anette, didn’t appreciate her at first but now do (compared to floor). Floor’s a decent singer, but Tuomas doesn’t know what to write for her. Looks like floor is telling him write me songs that makes me look better than Anette and Tarja. Last album, CD 2&3 were the best. The instrumentals. With some OK songs.

However the albums with her are plain and boring. Back when they signed Anette her difference to Tarja forced them to be more creative about music, but with Floor I guess they are more comfortable and it is bad for creativity...
It may be almost 20 years since she was kicked out of nightwish, but she's still the true original Nightwish vocal. Floor is very good, but she ain't Tarja.

Sorry but the fact that Tarja moves, and hops, and dances and claps and her voice is immovable and at the same time so majestic and touching is only what talent can bring. She transfers you to this fantasy world that Tuomas meant to create when he was writing the song. People argue and people get replaced but some feelings are irreplaceable and no feud will change that.
The golden era of Nightwish. This setup. I was there. Haven't been on many gigs since then, just because no one else can never make me feel like they did back then. Tuomas was wrong when he afterwards said that "This isn't a religious or something.. It's just a common band and members tend to change." Something very big was broken later that day.
It's been seventeen years since she left and I still feel the loss. Sometimes I listen to later Nightwish, but the music is also different. I am glad that Tarja has her solo carrier, I listen to her songs quite often now, I really love her voice and personality. It was my mistake from the beginning to expect the same epicness from her as from Nightwish. I missed a lot of her concerts in Czech Republic. I didn't even realize how much I loved her for most of my life until I heard her voice again. I was shocked at how much she has improved and how many different projects she is embarking on. Her voice cuts my soul to pieces. This has never happened to me with anyone else, neither Floor nor Anette, whom I appreciate as singers. Tarja is my queen and favourite singer forever. Her era in Nightwish fundamentally defined my musical taste. And now Tarja just confirms it.
Tarja is one of the best. Floor Jansen is probably even better, technically speaking but Tarja was one of the first if not the first to put Opera to metal and that cannot be forgotten. Plus, she's just amazing.
Floor is better. Just being honest. I still have love for Tarja's contribution but she is LONG removed and the band is thriving without her and touring in places that TARJA refused to go to.

Tuomas may compose brilliant music, that’s not in question. Tarja brings it to life, leaves an impression, and makes it memorable. Just doesn’t feel that way with Floor. Did with Anette as her albums, like Tarja’s, were great.
I was thinking almost the same. He is an incredible drummer indeed. I just had sync this version and the Floor's version at Wacken and played both simultaneously. I thought I would need to sync again a couple of times cuz of some small differences on the pace. Simply didn't happened. He kept the the same absolute time signature in both all the way to the end! not a f'ing half second of difference

20 years ago, I first listened to Tarja's voice in "Passion and the Opera". It was just one more mp3 some random person sent me through IRC. Nightwish became my favourite band then, and although I think Floor is AMAZING, for me Tarja will forever be Nightwish's voice.
Tarja was what made this band stand out among many songs. I was listening on "Internet radio" for rock/metal, heard it. and wanted to hear that voice. again. I then started buying her albums, and still listen to her. As mainly a bass player, I also love the sound of the bass. Tarja's voice is what caught me.
It was exactly the same for me. Tuomas's lyrics and compositions were thought as "goofy" and "weird" when NW first started out. Tarja's voice is what was needed to give the Music and Lyrics credibility, until Tuomas's skills grew. There's no other Vocalist who could've done the same.
I keep coming back to this concert for the reasons that Tarja(in my opinion the only one) can create that operatic, gothic symphonic metal sound (and her attire..presentation) to an unparalleled level

Amazing how Tarja's live version gets 24million views after leaving the band for more than decade already. I also love Floor's version, especially the ending she did was incredible and not something I usually hear in metal. But I also love ending part with Tarja because it sounds like the band and her are singing to each other.

I am not going to get into Floor v. Tarja singing this song, but, to me, this is Nightwish's masterpiece. Of all of their very extended songs, this is by far my favorite - loved every bit of it.
Doesn't matter how many years pass each time i hear her sing feels like first time. Sleeping sun, nemo, end of all hope, wishmaster, phantom, bless this child... all perfect, night wish with tarja is rare example of me liking all their music, i cant name one bad song from 1997-2005

She’s the reason I loved this band so much! Tarja set the band apart from all of the others. I could listen to every song on their old albums and not get bored and be taken to another world. Not to mention the lady is GORGEOUS.

I've been going back and forth between this version and Floors, for about a week, and i have to say that each one has their own way of making this song unique and equally beautiful.
I wouldn't bother with any of these versions. The original studio version, with Tarja of course, trumps both live versions by a lot, including Tarja's own. Reaction videos of vocal experts on live performances by Floor are just doing an injustice to this song and people admiring any of the live performances are missing the best this operatic song has to offer. On the other hand I like Floor's live performance of "The greatest show on earth" more than the studio version, in conjunction with the videoclip. So there is no golden rule, generally studio versions tend to be better, but sometimes live performances are. In this case it's the studio version.
yes,I think that Tarjas ghostly vocals give this song a special touch :) but I like also Floors version, both are good. Tarja is singing this song in the way it was written, Floor made it her ownby freestyling in the end,its also Floors favorite song of Nightwish :)
This song is one of the reasons i fell in love with nightwish. but watching this now, after seeing what can be with Floor's 2013 wacken version, this just seems lazy and boring. i didn't think i would think that going in to check out Floor back in the day, but that my opinion now anyway.

This is THE voice that made me fall in love with Nightwish. The magical fusion of Tuomas' incredible composition, and the magical operatic voice of Tarja is just beyond wonderful

When I told her that I love her incredible solo music far more than anything she ever recorded with Nightwish (where she had no creative input), she blushed and gave me the dorkiest laugh and a big hug. Then she told me that she’s happier than she’s ever been. Truly a moment I’ll never forget.
Definitely. For years I only ever saw her in band photos, either frowning, or not looking very happy and figured she must be a diva with an attitude. Since then I've seen a couple of interviews and she comes across as such a lovely person. Funny how you can get such a wrong impression of people from photos.
For me this is a pinnacle of melodic heavy metal. The whole concert is perfect and really important for me. I wasnt there so this recording is important part of music history. But I must say its bitter sweet to watch and hear. I loved Tarja and with her I think they couldve gone even bigger but what I am to say because Im one sucker for nostalgia anyway. Anyway I am so greatful this exist. Thank you.
A song created by the gods, and Tarja's voice, no matter who sings it, that mixture of emotions that it provokes in me is impressive. I love this song. Nightwish for me will always be my favorite band.
Tarja`s scene presence was out of this world. Guitars shrieking, drums blasting full power all the time , synthesizers and back vocals screaming constantly at best of their abilities, and u have no problem hearing Tarja, because her voice alone overpowers everything and in such a gentle manner. It`s hard to comprehend actually how something can be so dominant and fragile at the same time. The voice of Valkyrie indeed.
To be fair... Saulius Nazarovas is not even close the the truth! If you've ever been lucky to witness her presence on stage and hear that VOICE live, you would know! God damn, son, she is one of a kind!
@@competiti22 This is not exactly how the band sounds live. That is a lot of sound retouching to bring vocals forward, so it is not possible to compare the two of them, since it's pretty clear recent Nightwish videos are much better edited. The band itself is much better nowadays and is far more experienced in lowering their instruments in key vocal segments, especially the guitar, as Nightwish melodies are often guided by the digital strings of the board and the drums. And third, I noticed that this piece was probably much later in the show than the one in Wacken that everybody is watching. Everybody in the band seems already pretty sweaty and tired here and it's clear Tarja is running out of breath. So, we might have to consider the timing of the piece as well. All in all, I love both singers. Minor note: I find Tarja to be A LOT cooler than Floor, though. Not as singer, both are spectacular, but visually (clothes and posture and such).
Thats something thats always amazed me about Tarja's singing...the way she can project and make herself heard, without having to really shout or scream.

Sadly not much left from the original band, except Tuomas and Emppu ... everyone else is out. Nightwish these days is a different band but not what they once were back then.
It is always the question of the era, in that you fell in love with a band. I discovered Nightwish around the year 2000, and of course it was the voice of Tarja, which made me fall in love with this band and absorbing every song of them. "Once" was to me such a perfect album, with so many many great songs, their best until today. All with Tarja. After she left, I wasn't so satisfied with Anette, so i lost focus on the band. I checked out the new stuff with Floor, of course she does a great job and seems to be the perfect singer for this band. No doubt. But if you ask me, what is in my heart and my mind, I would always answer: it is the era with Tarja. It is no question of singing style, of voice, of charisma or talent - it is just a question of the heart.
Ask me what from Nightwish is deeply saved in my memory, and the answer will always be the Nemo song with Tarja. Because in that ERA it was awesome, something special. Yes you could listen to that song on radio every day thats probably why but Tarja also has unique voice. Floor is great. Anette is listeneble, but Tarja... what can I say, I will allways remember the beginning :)
Bless The Child introduced me to the band very very late (2017?!) as I was song hopping on UA-cam. I’ve got to say, each singer has her strengths, song that one, two, or each can really bring to life, and others that belong to just one. As others have mentioned, each creates a different band, but all worthy of listening repeatedly…✌🏻❤️

@@micheledjubatie9212 I agree that Tarja has a better opera-style voice. But this is why I didn't like Nightwish and ignored the band in past - there was "too much opera" in their songs. Another point to consider is that Floor, in her earlier performances, tried to match and mimick the Tarja's voice - of course in this case Tarja wins :) Later they adapted songs to her voice and the newer versions sounds better to me. It's just a matter of preference, I guess :) Who prefers the operatic vocals would choose Tarja, who likes a powerful voice with lots of variations would choose Floor :)

In 2024, I still love Nightwish. And this is absolutely the best in their whole history.
Tarja's and Floor's versions of this song are like two responses to a tragic heartbreak. Tarja's version is like quietly weeping. While Floor's version is like loudly wailing. I'm currently in love with Tarja's version but I figured I could listen to each one of them depending on if I need a silent cry or an aggressive shout. And I find it amazing that way.

I wouldn't want Tarja back in NW today. BUT the early magical NW was Tarja and that's why we were all enchanted by that lineup at that point in history. I prefer tarja to sing certain songs to me.

Tarja was pure magic and still is. I saw her and Marco in São Paulo in April and the magic is still there, intact. I can’t say the same for the last 2 NW albums. I truly believe Tarja and Nightwish is a combination that can never be surpassed by anyone, ever. In a way, she was Nightwish’s muse.

Last album, CD 2&3 were the best. The instrumentals. With some OK songs.

Sorry but the fact that Tarja moves, and hops, and dances and claps and her voice is immovable and at the same time so majestic and touching is only what talent can bring. She transfers you to this fantasy world that Tuomas meant to create when he was writing the song. People argue and people get replaced but some feelings are irreplaceable and no feud will change that.
The golden era of Nightwish. This setup. I was there. Haven't been on many gigs since then, just because no one else can never make me feel like they did back then.
Tuomas was wrong when he afterwards said that "This isn't a religious or something.. It's just a common band and members tend to change." Something very big was broken later that day.
It's been seventeen years since she left and I still feel the loss. Sometimes I listen to later Nightwish, but the music is also different. I am glad that Tarja has her solo carrier, I listen to her songs quite often now, I really love her voice and personality. It was my mistake from the beginning to expect the same epicness from her as from Nightwish. I missed a lot of her concerts in Czech Republic. I didn't even realize how much I loved her for most of my life until I heard her voice again. I was shocked at how much she has improved and how many different projects she is embarking on. Her voice cuts my soul to pieces. This has never happened to me with anyone else, neither Floor nor Anette, whom I appreciate as singers.
Tarja is my queen and favourite singer forever. Her era in Nightwish fundamentally defined my musical taste. And now Tarja just confirms it.
Tarja is one of the best. Floor Jansen is probably even better, technically speaking but Tarja was one of the first if not the first to put Opera to metal and that cannot be forgotten.
Plus, she's just amazing.
Floor is better. Just being honest. I still have love for Tarja's contribution but she is LONG removed and the band is thriving without her and touring in places that TARJA refused to go to.

The new drummer does the job, but doesn't apply the same delicacy as Jukka did.
I was thinking almost the same. He is an incredible drummer indeed. I just had sync this version and the Floor's version at Wacken and played both simultaneously. I thought I would need to sync again a couple of times cuz of some small differences on the pace. Simply didn't happened. He kept the the same absolute time signature in both all the way to the end! not a f'ing half second of difference

20 years ago, I first listened to Tarja's voice in "Passion and the Opera". It was just one more mp3 some random person sent me through IRC. Nightwish became my favourite band then, and although I think Floor is AMAZING, for me Tarja will forever be Nightwish's voice.
Tarja was what made this band stand out among many songs. I was listening on "Internet radio" for rock/metal, heard it. and wanted to hear that voice. again. I then started buying her albums, and still listen to her. As mainly a bass player, I also love the sound of the bass. Tarja's voice is what caught me.

It was exactly the same for me. Tuomas's lyrics and compositions were thought as "goofy" and "weird" when NW first started out. Tarja's voice is what was needed to give the Music and Lyrics credibility, until Tuomas's skills grew. There's no other Vocalist who could've done the same.

Amazing how Tarja's live version gets 24million views after leaving the band for more than decade already. I also love Floor's version, especially the ending she did was incredible and not something I usually hear in metal. I've been going back and forth between this version and Floors, for about a week, and i have to say that each one has their own way of making this song unique and equally beautiful.
I wouldn't bother with any of these versions. The original studio version, with Tarja of course, trumps both live versions by a lot, including Tarja's own. Reaction videos of vocal experts on live performances by Floor are just doing an injustice to this song and people admiring any of the live performances are missing the best this operatic song has to offer.
On the other hand I like Floor's live performance of "The greatest show on earth" more than the studio version, in conjunction with the videoclip. So there is no golden rule, generally studio versions tend to be better, but sometimes live performances are. In this case it's the studio version.

When I told her that I love her incredible solo music far more than anything she ever recorded with Nightwish (where she had no creative input), she blushed and gave me the dorkiest laugh and a big hug. Then she told me that she’s happier than she’s ever been. Truly a moment I’ll never forget.
It amazes me how many musicians are really such humble characters. You'd think they'd naturally be drawn to the spotlight.
Definitely. For years I only ever saw her in band photos, either frowning, or not looking very happy and figured she must be a diva with an attitude.
Since then I've seen a couple of interviews and she comes across as such a lovely person. Funny how you can get such a wrong impression of people from photos.
Tarja's voice is akin to heavy artillery - what a voice!
For me this is a pinnacle of melodic heavy metal. The whole concert is perfect and really important for me. I wasnt there so this recording is important part of music history. But I must say its bitter sweet to watch and hear. I loved Tarja and with her I think they couldve gone even bigger but what I am to say because Im one sucker for nostalgia anyway. Anyway I am so greatful this exist. Thank you.
A song created by the gods, and Tarja's voice, no matter who sings it, that mixture of emotions that it provokes in me is impressive. I love this song. Nightwish for me will always be my favorite band.

Tarja`s scene presence was out of this world. Guitars shrieking, drums blasting full power all the time , synthesizers and back vocals screaming constantly at best of their abilities, and u have no problem hearing Tarja, because her voice alone overpowers everything and in such a gentle manner. It`s hard to comprehend actually how something can be so dominant and fragile at the same time. The voice of Valkyrie indeed.
To be fair... Saulius Nazarovas is not even close the the truth! If you've ever been lucky to witness her presence on stage and hear that VOICE live, you would know! God damn, son, she is one of a kind!
interesting you say that, in this vid i find her much harder to hear over the band than Floor. But both are great, different but great.
@@competiti22 This is not exactly how the band sounds live. That is a lot of sound retouching to bring vocals forward, so it is not possible to compare the two of them, since it's pretty clear recent Nightwish videos are much better edited.
The band itself is much better nowadays and is far more experienced in lowering their instruments in key vocal segments, especially the guitar, as Nightwish melodies are often guided by the digital strings of the board and the drums.
And third, I noticed that this piece was probably much later in the show than the one in Wacken that everybody is watching. Everybody in the band seems already pretty sweaty and tired here and it's clear Tarja is running out of breath. So, we might have to consider the timing of the piece as well.
All in all, I love both singers. Minor note: I find Tarja to be A LOT cooler than Floor, though. Not as singer, both are spectacular, but visually (clothes and posture and such).
Thats something thats always amazed me about Tarja's singing...the way she can project and make herself heard, without having to really shout or scream.
@@phantomechelon3628 ... that is the essence of her extensive training as a chamber lyric soprano..the idea is to be able to have her voice rise above and yet blend seamlessly with the instrumental tones and key changes..according to her, this was the product of almost 6 months of intense preparation..but we all know that Tarja is a perfectionist..

Sadly not much left from the original band, except Tuomas and Emppu ... everyone else is out. Nightwish these days is a different band but not what they once were back then.

It is always the question of the era, in that you fell in love with a band. I discovered Nightwish around the year 2000, and of course it was the voice of Tarja, which made me fall in love with this band and absorbing every song of them. "Once" was to me such a perfect album, with so many many great songs, their best until today. All with Tarja. After she left, I wasn't so satisfied with Anette, so i lost focus on the band. I checked out the new stuff with Floor, of course she does a great job and seems to be the perfect singer for this band. No doubt. But if you ask me, what is in my heart and my mind, I would always answer: it is the era with Tarja. It is no question of singing style, of voice, of charisma or talent - it is just a question of the heart.
Ask me what from Nightwish is deeply saved in my memory, and the answer will always be the Nemo song with Tarja. Because in that ERA it was awesome, something special. Yes you could listen to that song on radio every day thats probably why but Tarja also has unique voice. Floor is great. Anette is listeneble, but Tarja... what can I say, I will allways remember the beginning :)

Bless The Child introduced me to the band very very late (2017?!) as I was song hopping on UA-cam. I’ve got to say, each singer has her strengths, song that one, two, or each can really bring to life, and others that belong to just one. As others have mentioned, each creates a different band, but all worthy of listening repeatedly…✌🏻❤️
@@noobdernoobder6707 I couldn't describe it much better... it is a kind of mystic atmosphere, the feeling of being part in a fairytale... NW lost this unique point with Tarja. It is still a great symphonic metal band today, no doubt! But it doesn't touch my heart anymore.
