SAMELLA LEWIS AT SUNO 1998--The 4th Annual African American Women's Art Symposium at SUNO--Address by: Dr. Samella Lewis. This video is a survivor of Hurricane Katrina; the DVD copy did not work properly but the VHS did with a couple of 'jump cuts' (a word of advice to video archivists--don't abandon your VHS originals they play through damage that crashes digital devices like CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays!).
This video also comes at a sad moment--Dr. Samella Lewis passed away on May 27, 2022--She points out in this lecture that she is part of three generations of African American Women Artists, starting with: Dr. Lois Mailou Jones; Dr. Elizabeth Catlett; and herself. Another very important take away is the crucial role of HBCUs in supporting the nurturing of greats like Dr. Lewis and the others covered in this special lecture.
